Foreword
I want to use this report as a guide for my dummy. My process was quite chaotic and I used my dummy as a log book. So whenever I discovered or heard an interesting piece of information, I would write or draw something in my dummy. See this report as a time line, the dates correspond with the ones in the dummy. I will also try to show how different pieces of information are related to each other and show the different conclusions I gradually drew. Some submissions will have more or less text than others because the information is not always that relevant for my final design goal and interaction vision.

12 Sep: Wrote down the first ideas for my design goal: campfire feeling, tangible music, the boombox... I also walked around Delft to get inspired. As I was waiting at a traffic light, I remembered a pre10 Sep: First workshop 07 Sep: Kick-off Lecture vious experience in Rotterdam. I saw a funny sticker on a traffic light post. The sticker was an unexpected surprise and made me laugh. I wanted to dig deeper and started forming my design goal around that experience. 20 Sep: Feedback session on the design goal. I still had too many directions: make pedestrians more aware, surprise them or increase the interaction between them.

17 Sep: First observations and thoughts 13 Sep: Coach meeting and buddy work. A few interesting ideas came out of the brainstorm the buddies.

27 Sep: Stakeholder meeting. At this point, I left the surprise quality behind and I wanted to focus on the pedestrians time perception because, in the end, that is the core idea in my design goal. 25 Sep: Reflection on Design lecture about the rythms in a city. 24 Sep: I asked different people to tell me a small story where they were surprised. Then, I tried to find a pattern. It did not give much but I did start thinking about the flow of the pedestrians activity. 08 Oct: Out of the different papers, only one proved to be useful. It mentioned the difference between a conscious and emotional state. A conscious state usually give a longer time perception than an emotional state. 04 Oct: Coaching session. I was doing some literature research to create the base for my assumption map. 01 Oct: Decide which methods are best for the research, it came down to interviewing.

11 Oct: Workshop Interaction Intervention. My interaction vision was still fuzzy and unclear for myself so I wanted to focus on it during the workshop. So, I shared what I had up to that point and afterwards, it was a brainstorm session. This is when I came up with the implementation of a competitive environment for my situation. The excitement that comes from the competition will make the pedestrian be focused on the moment instead of their goal. The consequence is that their time perception is changed, hopefully for the best. Some ideas came up during the brainstorm. 17 Oct: It was time to review all of my findings and to sum it up. I did read a final paper from M.J. Apter about the Reversal Theory. That did help me get a better overview of the different emotional states that a person can go through. The part about the rules and means were the most applicable for my situation. This reviewing resulted in the following design goal: Help pedestrians, that are waiting at the traffic light, change their perception of time by creating a competitive environment And the interaction vision: Being so focused on the moment that time passes by quickly On the following pages, you can find some of the concept directions.

In this concept direction, I wanted to create a race. It can either be against two pedestrians or against a digital opponent. The digital opponent could be Usain Bolt, a hippo or a jet plain, anything to make it fun and variable. The user would be focused and excited, waiting for the start. I am still unsure about which senses I want to use for this concept.

One of the pedestrians said at some point What is it cold here! while rubbing here hands. Then, it made me think that it will be winter soon and that this interaction of rubbing hands or blowing on it to get warmth is nice. So the concept is that the pedestrians needs to create heat, the product would read the temperature and will give a score.

What is it cold here!

This concept direction is about drawing the products attention. People would need to move, jump, yell or something else to get a reaction from the product. At the end, the side of the crossing that won would get a reward like cheers or people clapping.
