Class hours: 8 am-9.30 am(Monday, Wednesday) Office hours: 9.30 am -10.30 am after the classes or by appointment. Contact: 01819374636 Course Objective: To make students interested in knowledge in general and in Economics in particular. In addition to making the students acquainted with basic microeconomic tools that will help them analyze the economic issues in future, the emphasis will also be on their applications. As microeconomics, the course comprises, though is not limited to, economic behaviors of individuals and business firms. Course Outline: (a) Economics, Microeconomics: Purpose, scope. (b) Demand-Supply, market equilibrium, change in equilibrium price and quantity, market intervention. (c) Elasticity and its applications (d) Consumer behavior: Marginal utility analysis. (e) Consumer behavior: Indifference Curve analysis. (f) Production: Theory and application. (g) Cost of Production: Concepts, Theories and Applications. (h) Profit analysis: Revenue, Break-even point and profit maximization: Theories, Conditions and Applications. (i) Various Market structures: Distinguishing characteristics and price-output determination, scope of intervention. (j) Various practical pricing policies. (k) Game theory and its application. (l) Market Failure: Public goods, externalities, asymmetric information. (m) Risk and Uncertainty: Concepts and measurements. (n) Welfare Economics.(If time allows).

Assessment Policy: Mid Term Final Term Class test Attendance Assignment & Presentation Grading System: A : 90-100 A- :85 to less than 90 B+ : 80 to less than 85 B : 75 to less than 80 B-:70 to less than 75 C+:65 to less than 70 C: 60 to less than 65 C-:55 to less than 60 D: 50 to less than 55 Fail: Below 50 Special Instruction: No make-up tests will be taken for mid-term and final term. Make up tests for others will be taken only on valid excuses and the instructor shall determine the validity of the excuses. For such cases students are advised to inform the instructor earlier.
