Name of Lesson: Presidential Dialogue Across Time

Grade Level: 11

Overview and Purpose: To recognize trends and themes over time, students will collaborate to create a dialogue between two presidents from different time periods. Dialogue will focus on the presidents views and actions regarding the social, economic, and political impact of events on American life. Students will use mobile device apps to complete assignment.

Educational Standards
Use research and inquiry skills to analyze American history using primary and secondary sources. (SS.912.A.1) Demonstrate an understanding of the changing role of the United States in world affairs through the end of World War I. (SS.912.A.4) Understand the rise and continuing international influence of the United States as a world leader and the impact of contemporary social and political movements on American life. Objectives:

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to: Recognize the accomplishments of American presidents in history. Analyze and discuss the impact of social, economic, and political events on American life during two different time periods. Defend the merits of a president's views and actions concerning the social, political, and economic events during his presidency Collaborate with group members by sharing ideas and documents.

Materials Needed: Smart-phone (1 per student) U.S. History app (for each phone and/or ability to share apps) Notes Everything app (for each phone and/or ability to share apps) Drop Box account and app(for each phone and/or ability to share apps)

Information:

1. Explain that pairs will be completing research on two selected presidents using smart-phone U.S. History app. 2. Students will use Notes Everything app to take notes on their research and create a mock dialogue between the two presidents and a moderator who keeps the debate going with probing questions. 3. Students will share their dialogue with instructor via Drop Box 4. Students should have working knowledge of using and sharing apps 5. Students and instructor should have a Drop Box account and allow partner access to shared file. 6. Teacher will create class accessible file for peer review of dialogues. 7. Pairs will peer review dialogues. Note: Tutorials available on YouTube
Verification:

1. Students use app to make accurate research notes in Notes Everything app that includes at least one major social, economic, and political event during each presidents term(s). 2. Dialogue effectively defends the presidents views and actions regarding the social, economic, and political events during his presidency. 3. Dialogue is relatively free of spelling and grammar errors. 4. Students share notes and dialogue document via apps. 5. Peer reviews reflect insight and understanding.
Activity:

Students are put into pairs. Pairs select two presidents from different time periods (can choose from list in U.S. History app or teacher created list). One student uses U.S. History app via smart-phone to research first selected president and the partner takes notes using Notes Everything app. Notes are shared and put into Drop Box file so that both students have the notes on the first selected president. Pairs switch roles and repeat the procedure for the second selected president. Pairs then work together to create a dialogue using Notes Everything (dialogue will be written under previously created notes). Dialogue between the two presidents should focus on the presidents views and actions regarding the social, economic, and political impact of events on American life. Dialogue is copied and pasted into a new Notes Everything and put into Drop Box file for grading. As a follow up, pairs will access the teacher created Drop Box file and peer-review their classmates dialogue using generic rubric or teacher created rubric. Notes 1. Modifications can include voice recorded notes and/or dialogue using Notes Everything app Lesson can be modified to cover Early years through Reconstruction for honors/advanced 8th grade standards will need to be revised in this case.
