(The full version contains over 17,000 pages of material published between 1924 and 2000.) It can be navigated from the Introduction document, using the bookmarks that appear in the left-hand pane. Searching
The documents are presented as bitmap images in Portable Document Format (PDF), scanned from the Society of Dyers and Colourists archive collection of Colour Index documents. These documents have also themselves been scanned by optical character recognition (OCR) software to make them searchable using the search facility within Acrobat Reader. Please note: Searches should be carried out from within this Introduction document, making sure that the Demo Index is selected. Owing to the complexity of much of the material, the poor quality of some of the original printing and any shortcomings in the OCR process, searches may not always be exhaustive. So for optimum reliability it is recommended to use manual browsing of the documents, as outlined above.

Colour Index Heritage Edition

Guide to Editions
First Edition This was published in 1924. It was divided into four main sections: synthetic organic dyestuffs (with colorants listed numerically according to chemical class), natural organic dyestuffs, inorganic colouring matters and general indices (which included information on patents and intermediates and commercial names). It was followed by a supplement in 1928. Second Edition The system of CI Generic Names and CI Constitution Numbers was established in this edition, published in 1956. Volumes 1 and 2 listed colorants according to CI Generic Name, showing application data, fastness properties, usages, etc. Volume 3 contained chemical structures and related information, while Volume 4 comprised an alphabetical index of commercial names. A supplement was published in 1963. Additions, deletions and alterations to entries were published quarterly in the form of Additions and Amendments from 1963. Third Edition Volumes 1 to 5 were published in 1971. Volumes 1 to 3 classify colorants according to their usage, providing information on their application properties; volumes are arranged by CI Generic Name. Volume 4 classifies colorants according to their chemical constitution, providing information on their chemical properties, and is arranged by CI Constitution Number. Information on intermediates is also included in Volume 4. Volume 5 is presented in 2 parts. Part 1 provides lists of commercially available colorants arranged according to CI Generic Name, while Part 2 lists commercial products alphabetically, crossreferenced to Part 1. Updates to Volume 5 were published in 1976, 1982 and 1987. A final update was published in 1992 as Volume 9/5. Updates to Volumes 1 to 4 were issued as follows: Volume 6 in 1975, Volume 7 in 1982 and Volume 8 in 1987. After 1971 all additions, deletions and alterations to the Colour Index were published quarterly in the form of Additions and Amendments, and it is these that form the basis of the later volumes. They are included here to provide a complete picture. Pigment and Solvent Dyes Edition In 1997 this edition introduced the concept of the fingerprint, i.e. a panel containing generic information on the colorant concerned. It contained information on pigments and solvent dyes only, which were listed in CI Generic Name order, accompanied by an alphabetical product name list and an index to CI Constitution Numbers. The information superseded that which appeared previously on these classes in the Third Edition. A supplement was published in 1998.
