Ski history is written here. And has been since 1892.

Kitzbhel and skiing is a timeless and legendary association. Skiing has been popular here at the foot of the Hahnenkamm since the very first descent by ski pioneer, Franz Reisch. Toni Sailer's dream team continued to write history in the 1950s. Today, in addition to the world-famous Streif , a total of 60 ski runs attract winter sports enthusiasts. High above the town, 52 cable cars and lifts travel back and forth to an altitude of 2,000 m above sea level. 170 km of downhill runs and 32 km of ski routes await wintersports enthusiasts upon arrival at the summit. The backcountry offers 230 km 2 of almost endless opportunities and romantic ski lodges all along the route invite skiers to stop off.

The ski resort.

The ski resort of Kitzbhel is among the most popular in the world. It is mainly sporty skiers that are drawn to the mountains of the Gamsstadt (Chamois Town). Magnificent powder runs, mogul ski pistes, top-rate carving fun and more than 24 km of black runs can be found here. Insiders appreciate the easily accessible backcountry. Back in 1908, ski pioneer Franz Reisch described the ski resort thus: The Kitzbhel Alps combine extraordinarily rich snow, easy accessibility and an unsurpassed number of backcountry skiing routes.

Guaranteed snow.
The Kitzbhel region has always been known for its unique microclimate. The winters here are traditionally long and rich in snow. The main reason for this is Kitzbhels geographic location, which guarantees long-lasting snowfall and large amounts of fresh snow. Furthermore, over 780 snow guns enhance the quality of the runs from the very start of the season. Kitzbhel has thus been the first nonglacier ski resort in Austria to begin lift operations in autumn every year for the past few years. An average of around 150 days of operation (from November until early May) justify the reputation of the Chamois Town as a resort with guaranteed snow.

In Kitzbhel, snowboarders and freestyle skiers are in paradise: huge mountains, fantastic terrain, easily accessible backcountry, a world-class snow park and our inside tip: the Kitzbheler Horn. With the first-rate snow park on the Hanglalm , Kitzbhel has also become one of the most significant resorts for young people. With its fantastic terrain, the Kitzbheler Horn is a real inside tip for freestyle skiers and boarders.

Snow Park Kitzbhel Hanglalm.

Insiders have long considered it to be one of the best parks in Austria: Kitzbhel Snow Park is the crowning glory of the innovative developments of recent years. In addition to the classic ramps and rails geared to all levels of ability, there is also a specially planted tree line featuring a variety of tree jib elements. Here the idea is to simply hop on your board and defy gravity only flying is better.

Kitzbhel ski history.

No other ski area in the Alps can look back on such a long-standing and successful ski tradition. This history is inextricably linked with that of Kitzbhel native Franz Reisch. Following preliminary ski attempts in December 1892, Reisch first managed to ski down the Kitzbheler Horn the first high Alpine ski run in Austria on 15 March 1893. Reisch is thus one of the most important ski pioneers in the Alpine region. The construction of the Hahnenkamm gondola as the first ski lift in Austria, the successes of Toni Sailer and his dream team, and the development of the Kitzbhel ski schools under ski instructor Karl Koller constitute further major milestones.

Who doesnt dream of conquering the legendary Streif themselves at some point? After all, it is the most famous descent in the world.

Outside of the Hahnenkamm races weekend, tricky passages such as the Mausefalle jump, steep Steilhang slope and Hausbergkante jump and corner are classed as extreme ski routes and therefore exclusively for expert skiers. The Familienstreif (Family Streif ) is recommended for those not among this elite circle: the most extreme passages are bypassed, making the Streif a red run on Kitzbhels piste map.
