Maintenance of Certification Learning Sessions

Program Guidelines
Engage physicians in ABIMs Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program by hosting collaborative Learning Sessions with ABIMs medical knowledge modules. In an interactive group setting, ABIM Board Certified physicians will work together on one or more medical knowledge modules to gain credit for MOC.Your organization decides the appropriate educational setting and format. Learning Sessions are designed to assist physicians with completing the Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge requirement of MOC and are not intended to support preparation to take an ABIM MOC Exam.

Guidelines for HOSTING A MAINTENANCE OF CERTIFICATION LEARNING SESSION

Choose any available medical knowledge module for use in a Learning Session. (See order form) Designate one or more ABIM Board Certified faculty who will serve as facilitators to provide participants with substantive educational content based on the knowledge module question topics. Determine the setting, format and number of participants for the Learning Session. We recommend that the Learning Session for each medical knowledge module be at least two hours in duration to allow time to complete the modules, most of which contain 25 questions. Consider recording participant answers with an electronic audience response system.

Approximately 90 days prior to the Learning Session, well provide your organization with the materials needed to plan and facilitate the Learning Session, including: A CD-ROM with the PDF version of the designated medical knowledge module(s) for printing copies to distribute to participants Facilitator Guidelines Learning Session Facilitator Feedback Form to provide ABIM with salient issues raised about the Learning Session and medical knowledge modules Participant Information that includes how to order modules and submit answers to ABIM for scoring and Maintenance of Certification credit Frequently Asked Questions about ABIMs Maintenance of Certification program Template Announcement to assist your organization in generating interest and promoting the Learning Session

STEPS TO Hosting A LEARNING SESSION

1. Complete a Learning Session Order Form and e-mail it to medicalknowledge@abim.org or fax it to 215-446-3570. Find the latest version of the order form here: www.abim.org/physicianorganizations/ 2. After the order form has been received, you will be asked to sign a licensing agreement if a current licensing agreement is not already in place. 3. You will receive an invoice from ABIM that must be paid by check. 4. Once the check has been received, and approximately 90 days before the session, ABIM will mail a Learning Session packet for use during the session.

HOW TO Enhance YOUR LEARNING SESSION

Choose from one or all of the following services: 1. MOC Guidelines These are specialty-specific flyers that guide physicians through the MOC program with recommendations tailored to their practice and interests. 2. MOC 101 Slideshow This thorough, but succinct, PowerPoint guide to the MOC program may be displayed on a loop during your event.

Troubleshooting YOUR LEARNING SESSION

1. Version Changes ABIM is committed to providing high-quality medical knowledge self-assessments and makes periodic enhancements to knowledge modules with updated content. You will be notified and will receive a replacement version if and when one becomes available. New versions, if required, will be released: February 15, June 15 and October 15. 2. Receiving the Files You will receive the module(s) on a single CD in the Learning Session packet. Please be aware that ABIMs limited copyright waiver is for a single Learning Session only. No files or CDs should be maintained after a Learning Session is held. If you wish to hold a future session using the same module, you should submit a new form for that session to receive the latest version of that module. 3. Answers Correct answers to ABIM medical knowledge modules used in Learning Sessions are not provided, since the objective of the sessions is for participants and faculty to work through the modules together to arrive at their preferred answers. Like the participants, session faculty are also ABIM diplomates who need to maintain their own certification without access to the ABIM answer key. 4. Advertising Your Session We ask that you provide ABIM with pre-publication copies of all materials you plan to use to advertise your Learning Session for final review and approval. 6. CME If you choose to offer CME credit, please advise attendees not to claim any credit from ABIM in addition, as it is against ACCME and AMA guidelines to claim credit twice for the same activity. 7. Module Choice Each Annual Update Module contains a unique set of 25 questions. There is no overlap among the various years (e.g., 2009 and 2010 Update in Pulmonary Disease). You may therefore order any combination of modules to be presented to the same audience. 8. Module Close to Discontinuation ABIM advises against ordering modules too close to the date on which they will be discontinued from the MOC program. Once a module has been discontinued, physicians will be unable to order it. The order form will often indicate the last date on which a module should be used.
