What is Hajj and Eid Al Adha? The Hajj is the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. It is one of the largest pilgrimages in the world. It is the fifth principle of Islam, a duty that must be carried out at least once in their lifetime by every Muslim who is able to. The pilgrimage occurs from the 8th to 12th day of Dhu AlHijjah, the 12th and last month of the Islamic calendar. Pilgrims join about three million worshippers to perform the Hajj, and a series of rituals: Each person walks counter-clockwise seven times around the sacred Kaaba, run back and forth between the hills of Al-Safa and Al-Marwah, drink from the Zamzam Well, go to the plains of Mount Arafat to throw stones in a ritual. The pilgrims then shave their heads, perform a ritual of animal sacrifice, and celebrate the three day global festival of Eid Al Adha. Eid Al Adha is an important holiday for Muslims worldwide. Muslims on this day remember Abrahams (Ibrahim) obedience to God. Muslims who are able are asked to sacrifice a sheep, cow or camel. A third is kept, a third is giving as a gift to family or friends and a third is given to the poor as charity.
