of and rainbow flags were hung. Tshirts were also given out, and pride and spirit were evident among these students, as they celebrated this momentous day in history. Many more events are still to come throughout October, including a drag ball, Intersex Awareness Day, a visit from renowned bisexual activist Robyn Ochs as well as transgender basketball player Kye Allums. Because of our societys prejudices, coming out can be a difficult process for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Coming out is a process of understanding, accepting and being proud of ones sexual orientation or gender identity. The month of October does not focus on the negative prejudices in society surrounding the gay community, but instead, focuses on the celebration and liberation of being true to yourself. It seems, as we get older and with the adaption to the ever-changing times, as well as gaining more mature peers, the easier it becomes to accept oneself. Eric Boccia, being beyond the awkward and tough years as a student, has now fully reached a point of pride and acceptance of himself. He shares his excitement about October being

dedicated to the celebration of coming out and his expectations about the impact such a celebration can have on society when he said, I think the more normal it becomes, the more the country will come around. His own situation was positive. Coming out was the most liberating experience of my life. For the first time I was free to be myself, and felt okay to show the real me. I finally felt like the person I was meant to be. Today, he couldnt be happier with who he is as a person: I am now in a committed, loving relationship, I am a full-time teacher, I own a home; I am happy. Today, National Coming Out Day is recognized by all 50 states in addition to many countries around the world. Although we still have a long way to go as a completely accepting society, we have made huge strides in the right direction. In the world of media, there has been an increase in positive portrayals of the gay community in popular shows such as Glee and Modern Family, which have helped to spin the negative image, or stereotype given to members of the community, to a more positive one. This day and month of celebration, in itself, is a huge step in the right direction.
figure doesnt discriminate between high and low income jobs, it also neglects the 4.3 million jobs lost the year before. Thus, the Obama administration falls short of overseeing the creation of five million private sector jobs. Obama had also misrepresented Romneys immigration policy. He had claimed that Romney referred to Arizonas SB-1070 law as model for the nation. The former Governor rightfully responded that only the e-verify portion of the law was a model for the nation. This provision requires employers to check an online database for the legal status of their workers. There are numerous other examples of inaccurate statements made by both Obama and Romney. According to GOP.com, the president had lied 13 times during the debate. However, according to Thinkprogress.com, Romney told 31 myths in just 41 minutes. While both candidates made misleading statements, Romney had made more than twice as many. Unfortunately for him, Obama still left the debate victorious. Issue 6

Many schools actually include Parent PLUS loans in financial aid letters, even before they are approved. This makes it appear as if they will have no out-of-pocket expenses. Greg Johnson, chief executive of Bottom Line, a college access program in New York and Boston, believes that this practice is deceptive. Colleges want high enrollment rates, so financial aid offices often recommend PLUS loans, with no knowledge of whether it will ever get paid off. Worse still is when the burden becomes too much and students are forced to drop out, despite adequate academic performance. Then theyve got half an education and a mountain of debt, Johnson claims. The purpose of these loans is to help those from lower-income families receive an education, but the current system has the potential to cause families to regress socioeconomically. The U.S. Department of Education has recently proposed changing the definition of averse credit by including unpaid collection accounts as grounds. This will result in more denial for PLUS loans, but Kantrowitz says that it wont stop people from overborrowing. We need a complete overhaul of the student loan system so that theres a more rational set of limits to curb the debt problem.

You should not have to allow your boyfriend/girlfriend to be with their friends. You should trust that they will act appropriately without you around. Trust is an issue in which most college long distance couples deal with. A key aspect of trust is not cheating! When you cheat on your partner, trust is destroyed and may take a long time to reconstruct. If youre not happy, be honestdont be a cheater. Space: Dont be too clingy (e.g. texting every minute). Yes, even long distance relationships need space! Enjoy alone time once in a while. This will also allow you to spend more time focusing on your assignments. Balance: Assuming youre both in school there should be a mutual understanding that you will have school work to do. Find a balance. This can be tricky but it helps if you schedule time for homework, socializing and talking to your significant other. Long distance relationships can work; they can even make your bond stronger. Remember that it is a myth that long distance relationships never work out. They are challenging, but 100 percent doable. My best advice is to cherish the weekends and breaks you have together. Also, take advantage of video chatting. It is the best way to be together without being in the same place.

This week, the SAAC Executive Board went to NACA, the National Association for Campus Activities, in Lancaster, PA. The conference is held annually and allows the programing boards of different universities to critique and bring in acts to be showcased at the conference. The SAAC Executive Board left Thursday morning, October 18, to make it to the event. We watched a series of acts that showcased and bargained with agents to find the best prices for the best acts. The board then collectively decided on which acts to bring in. This year, your SAAC Executive Board was very successful in booking artists. Almost all of our dates were filled with amazing acts including Darryl DMC McDaniels, who gave a lecture on the history of hip hop, and Svet, a violinist who has performed live with famous artists like Rihanna, T-pain and Gym Class Heroes. We also booked a wide range of acts ranging from comedians, the performing arts, special events and lectures. We will show videos of some of the booked acts at our general body meeting this Friday. Head on over to the SAAC general body meeting this Friday at 4 p.m. in the Union Square to check out all of the acts that were booked. Along with booking acts, the SAAC Executive Board also won much deserved recognition as a delegation. The SUNY Oneonta Delegation volunteered at the conference and represented SUNY Oneonta in the best way possible. The Issue 6

On June 14, 2012 SUNY Oneonta University Police Department (UPD) joined the relatively thin ranks of police agencies in New York State as being recognized as an accredited agency by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. Accreditation is a progressive and contemporary way of helping police agencies evaluate and improve their overall performance. It provides formal recognition that an organization meets or exceeds general expectations of quality in the field. Accreditation acknowledges the implementation of policies that are conceptually sound and operationally effective. The New York State program became operational in 1989 and has four principle goals: 1. To increase the effectiveness and efficiency of law enforcement agencies utilizing existing personnel, equipment and facilities to the extent possible; 2. To promote increased cooperation and coordination among law enforcement agencies and other agencies of the criminal justice services; 3. To ensure the appropriate training of law enforcement personnel, and; 4. To promote public confidence. The accreditation program is comprised of 133 standards and is divided into three categories. Standards in the administrative section have provisions for such topics as agency organization, fiscal management, personnel practices and records. Training standards encompass basic and in-service instruction, as well as training for supervisors and specialized or technical assignments. Operations standards deal with such critical and litigious topics as high-speed pursuits, roadblocks, patrol and unusual occurrences. department, as well as, The remaining SUNY Police Departments in the early stages of the accreditation should look to SUNY Oneonta as a model in onsite preparation. Food labels are a great indication of how nutritious a food or beverage is. Food labels are found mostly on processed foods, as well as all non-alcoholic bottled or canned beverages, and pre-prepared fruits and vegetables. Food labels can be a great way to tell how healthy a food or beverage is or not, but with so many numbers and nutrients, it can be difficult to know what you are reading! Serving size: The best place to start when reading a food label is the serving size. This is based on the amount of food most people eat at one time, and guides the entire rest of the food label. If you eat more or less than the serving size, the rest of the numbers will be affected as well. Calories: Many people look at the calories or fat first on a label because they may think these numbers matter most. Calories are simply a measure of energy and are determined by your height, weight, age and activity level, as well as injuries. Calories from fat can help you determine the percentage of calories that come from fat. Try to limit this number to less than 30 percent of your calories consumed per day! To find the percentage of calories that come from fat, divide calories from fat by calories. Fat: Total fat includes all the grams of fat found in the product. Typically, saturated fat and trans fats are what you see, but you may also see monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated (PUFA). Saturated fat and trans fats raise your risk of heart disease, while MUFAs and PUFAs may help lower your risk. Try Pg. 6 T h e
Cholesterol: There is research that has found cholesterol found in foods may not raise blood cholesterol in everyone, but since the jury is still out, it is best to take precautions and limit your cholesterol intake to less than 300mg daily, if your blood cholesterol levels are healthy. If they are not healthy, talk to your doctor about a plan to lower them.
Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates consist of fiber, sugar and starch, and provide your body with energy. Many people fear carbohydrates (and fat), but these nutrients are necessary for proper health. About half of your daily calories should come from carbohydrates; preferably fruits, veggies and whole grains.
Protein: Protein is a macronutrient (along with carbohydrates and fat), and helps repair muscle fibers as well as providing you with the sensation of satiety and keeps illustration by Kate Koenig you feeling full longer! Typically, Americans overestimate the amount of protein they need daily. This is based on factors including your weight and activity factor, as well as injury.
Micronutrients: Vitamins and minerals are macronutrients, and the ones found on a food label are the nutrients considered important to most peoples health.
Reading a food label is a great way to determine how nutritious a food is, but the healthiest foods are typically the ones without a labelfresh fruits and vegetables! T i m e s Issue 6

team came back stronger than ever. They finished the regular season with a 94-68 record and were lead by their ace Matt Cain, who in June threw only the 22nd perfect game in MLB history. In the beginning of the playoffs in the NLDS, the Giants came back from 2-0 down against the Cincinnati Reds to win the series 3-2 and then just yesterday, the Giants again completed a miraculous comeback in front of their home fans against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Giants were down 3-1 in the series but with their amazing pitching were able to comeback and win the last three to take the series 4-3. As a Red Sox fan, I know how essential getting hot at the right time is in the playoffs, so dont expect this run the Giants have been on to be a fluke. The 108th World Series image courtesy of news.sportslogos.net will be a competitive series this year without a doubt, the Tigers and Giants both look unstoppable right now. Verlander is playing at his 2011 MVP status again, add in the play of 2012 MVP front runner and triple crown winner Cabrera and the huge bat of Fielder, the Tigers are stacked all-around. Meanwhile, the Giants have just completed back to back comeback series wins against great teams, so while they might not have the huge bat the Tigers have, they are a force to be reckoned with for sure. However, all that being said, I still expect the Tigers to add their first World Series title since 1984 this year and expect one of their big three to win World Series MVP as well. The longer the series lasts, the better chance Verlander has to win it, since it will mean he would pitch more, but it is more likely that Cabrera will add a World Series MVP to his already expansive list of achievements. The Tigers will win this series in 6.
In college football the ultimate goal is fact that they have so many privileges purely because they
can use their football skills to avoid really having to get a proper education. Would extending a four-team playoff to an actual tournament make college football bigger than it should be? At what point does it become too much pressure, too much attention for something thats supposed to be purely about school pride? Its a controversial topic but the real question is who comes first, the players or the fans? Creating a deeper tournament in which teams are seeded could allow upsets, more benefits to undefeated teams, and less confusion as to who purely is the best team or deserves to play. These are all factors that will make college football more entertaining for the fans. The players should image courtesy of deadissue.com come first and right now, judging by Cardale Jones tweet, things are out of control. College football players need to be able to focus on class first then the football. Furthering the intensity of college football would only create more egos and reasons for college football players to think that they, aint come to play school. Lets not forget controversies such as when Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor were in college acting as examples of how players could be using their fame to make profit on the side at such a young age. The BCS has its flaws, but making college football a tournament would allow more popularity to the sport, meaning more money for the sports media and more money for the universities. However, theyd be sacrificing the most important fundamental of collegethe education of the students.

he vast difference between A Fine Frenzys debut One Cell in the Sea and her second album Bomb in a Birdcage showed that Alison Sudol, the lead singer and mastermind, wasnt exactly content with staying in one place as an artist. Originally making a good name in the female folk-pop category, her departure to a more indie-pop sound was greeted with hesitation by some fans, but ultimately proved to be an inspired decision that paid off well with an even better record. And with her third album Pines, A Fine Frenzy again moves away from a previous album, but this time its in a thematic sense. Pines is actually a concept album that tells the story of a pine tree who is given the chance to have free will. While the idea can make some people roll their eyes or question the purpose, Sudols influences from her trip to the redwood forests in Northern California and the Cascade Mountains are clearly represented throughout Pines. Winds of Wander begins with birds chirping before an acoustic guitar is lightly plucked and Sadseasong uses the sound of a rocking sailboat to great effect. For other songs, the light, intricate sounds of nature are instead evoked through the careful and relaxed instrumentation that make up the majority of the 67-minute runtime. Its true, the majority of the album is a quiet meditation on the trees journey to finding where she belongs, turning up the volume only when necessary Key Tracks: Riversong, Avalanches (Cullas Song), on tracks like the great Sailingsong when the pine tree Winds of Wander

and a creature by the name of No-Face. No-Face is an unidentifiable spirit who has a mask for a face, and eventually mutates into a voracious beast that conjures up gold pieces to lure creatures closer in order to swallow them whole. However, when he escapes from the central spirit bathhouse, he returns to normal. The works of Takahata are usually more based on realism. His directing work under Studio Ghibli is encompassed by Grave of the Fireflies (1988), Only Yesterday (1991), Pom Poko (1994) and My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999). Grave of the Fireflies tells the story of two siblings fighting for survival in the final months of World War II; Only Yesterday follows a female protagonist who spends time working on a farm and reflecting on her lifes memories. Pom Poko, which draws heavily on Japanese folklore, is based on the myth that raccoons are shape-shifters who use energy from their testicles to transform. from the beginning to the end. Its filled with what seems like pure comedy to Americans, but is defined by its typical Japanese elements; theres more to it than the uncomfortable amount of cartoon genitalia. In one extended scene, the shape-shifting animals put on a phantasmagoric parade in town to scare the local humans, and many of outlandish creatures from the scene were inspired by stories from Japanese mythology. Every scene that involves their transformations displays completely alien, and in that sense, fascinating, visuals. Each movie produced by Studio Ghibli is a unique experience. The quality of animation is comparable to the early Disney animated features, specifically the artwork from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Pinocchio and Fantasia. Each story is an almost ineffable piece of fantasy (with the exception of the more realistic plots). The visuals will leave permanent imprints on your mind. Not to mention the music, composed by Joe Hisaishi, which, by listening, may be the best method of transporting you to the worlds of the movies when you want to revisit them without taking the time to re-watch them. Okay, so clearly Im a huge fan of Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. If you havent already, you might go and watch Pom Poko and walk away without much of an impression. You might catch an airing of Spirited Away and simply roll your eyes at the sight. But honestly, I doubt it. Miyazakis son Gor Miyazaki has also been directing, with his latest release being From Up on Poppy Hill just last year. I recommend the classics, but feel free to start with the latest and move backwards; either way youll be experiencing a world far beyond the usual.

Black Friday: Shop til You Drop
Lifestyle
Black Friday is a term with which most Americans are familiar. In a society surrounded by consumer opportunities, Black Friday is a day for people to wait in line for the best deals before the holidays. According to Blackfriday.com, the term Black Friday was coined in the 1960s and the naming came from the old accounting methods. When accounting records were kept by hand, red ink indicated a loss, and black a profit. Although the term was created in the 60s, the tradition has been around since the first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade which kicks off the holiday season. In the past stores have opened at midnight on the Friday after Thanksgiving for people to do their holiday shopping at a discounted price; however, each year the time becomes earlier. This year stores are beginning to open at 9 p.m. on November 22 (Thanksgiving Day), and are remaining open through Friday November 23. Toys 'R' Us is one store that has decided to open on Thanksgiving. Other stores such as Macy's, Best Buy and Walmart are opening their doors at midnight. The times generally range from 9 p.m. Thanksgiving to 7 a.m. November 22 depending on the store. On campus and in the media there seems to be a controversy about stores opening on Thanksgiving night. ees who are being forced to work Thanksgiving night. On Facebook there are also comments on store pages disagreeing with opening on Thanksgiving night. Many stores try to keep their advertisements a secret to the public but like anything else in the media, most advertisements are eventually leaked. This year, not many companies so far have experienced an ad being leaked early, although there is one company whose ad was released. Sprint is advertising a $49.99 Samsung Galaxy phone on Black Friday with a two-year contract. The phone is normally priced at $99.99 so Black Friday buyers will be getting a half-off deal. Due to the leaking in the past, many companies are offering a list of their top items for Black Friday. According to Blackfriday. com, Walmart and Target have announced that their must have toy of the season is the 2012 Furby, a toy regenerated from the early 2000s. Other websites such as Blackfriday.fm have published predictions for the most wanted sale items of 2012. These items include Apple TV, tablets, ultra-books and smartphones. Black Friday has become a part of the American culture. It is a day where people can buy presents for the holidays at affordable prices. People are willing to camp out all night in front of stores to get the best deals of the season. Will you be one of them?

Hailing from Albany, New York and having spent a vast majority of my free time taking trips to New York City, I have developed a strong appreciation for graffiti and street art. However, unlike me, many people see it in a more conventional manner and interpret it as vandalism. With this article, I want you, the readers, to understand what art truly can be and how it may be a rewarding and yet deterring battle between self and society. Looking at New York City, the infamous concrete jungle, one can only imagine the underlying influence street art has had on students and bystanders as they commute and inhabit one of the worlds largest canvases. Id like to talk about some amazing artists who became famous through street art. We will start out with a personal favorite of mine, Stash. According to Cuadro Fine Arts Gallery, Stash was born in Long Island, New York in 1967 and is considered one of New Yorks graffiti legends and describes him as follows:
The most known and sought-after street artist is someone that most have never seen: Banksy, an artist from London. Banksy's art is viewed as vandalism for its extreme imagery of unconventional mishaps. To put it in laymans terms, he says what everyone else is thinking yet dont have the guts to say. As suggested by Gwarlingo.com, "In 2005 Banksy achieved a sort of art world quadruple crown when he snuck his works into four New York museumsthe Metropolitan Museum, MoMA, the American Museum of Natural History and the Brooklyn Museumin a single day." One can argue that this is vandalism, but I believe this is pure genius. As illustrated by Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia, the definition of vandalism is as follows: "willful or malicious destruction of public or private property." To me, it means the contrary; how can art be defined as destruction? Oneonta has a small taste of street art with the Hartwick Wall, granted one can claim that its not vandalism because its regulated through an educational institution. Is there a contradiction or double standard While his contemporaries turned to Pop Art, Stash stayed in the works? The tenth most followed individual on Twitter is Kim Kardashian, yet CNN News is number 34 and the New York Times is number 72. We care too much about celebrities and what they are doing rather than focusing on the problems at hand like the economy or the presidential election. Teen angst has always been around. The movie "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" hit select theaters on September 21 and gave the indie non-conventional crowd a movie to feel with and empathize with, however you throw the name J.D. Salinger out and nobody knows who you are talking about. The post-adolescent transition into young adulthood, anger and longing for a sense-of-belonging phase got its calling from Salingerthe author of, arguably, one of the most influential books in a young image courtesy of hourdetroit.com adult's life: "The Catcher in the Rye." Along with Salinger, the infamous Holden Caulfield is no longer at the tip of the iceberg. To sum it all up, we need to look at the big picture in the world today. We can no longer focus on individuals who are famous for being famous. This phase of house music and party rocking to a dub-step drug induced comatose state of feeling, like no one gets us and we no longer want to conform to an idea that getting white girl wasted on the weekend to subdue our hatred for classes and sheer boredom of a small town feel. The truth is that this world needs a wake-up call. There is still a "Holy War" in Israel and people still go hungry every day. As suggested by the Clean Air Council, the average American office worker uses about 500 disposable cups every year, or throws away enough paper and plastic cups, forks and spoons to circle the equator 300 timesyet war, world hunger or environmental issues is not a concern in the minds of most young adults.
acetylated, the addition of a molecule or compound, with acetic anhydride. The catalyst, a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction, used for the acetylation process was N-Bromosuccinimide. Teli told SciDev.net, Banana fibre's water absorbing property is because of the hydroxyl groups in the chemical structure of cellulose. When treated with acetic anhydride, the hydroxyl groups get converted into acetates, which do not attract water. Bhaskar Rao, a natural fibre scientist at ICT, told SciDev.net that not only was the absorption capacity of the banana fibre improved, but its durability was as well. However, Rao stated that the fibres might not be effective with oil spills that contain certain chemical pollutants. He explained that certain chemicals have a corrosive effect that the banana fibres would not be able to withstand. Prashant Kumar Bhattacharya, professor of chemical engineering at ICT, also said that another issue was that there is organized collection of the banana fibre. Currently, organic compounds such as polypropylene and polyurethane are what mainly make up the large sponges used to clean up oil spills. The problem with this is that these synthetic materials are non-biodegradable and arent safely disposed. However, if sponges were made of acetylated banana fibre, the environment would not be harmed and the oil could be safely absorbed. If scientists can find a way to chemically enhance the fibre even more and allow it to not be effected by certain corrosive chemicals, the banana might be the answer to cleaning up horrendous oil spills.
