espite harsher penalties including deportation of immigrants and his endorsement of Gay marriage, some 93.3% of the Caribbean Americans population said they will be voting for president Barack Obama in the November 6 elections. According to a presidential survey conducted by the influential Everybody's Magazine, as of October 23, 2012, only a mere 2.0% of the 417 readers from 39 states in support of Governor Mitt Romney, while 4.7% will vote for any other candidate. As American citizens, Caribbean nationals take a strong interest in the upcoming U.S. presidential elections. Caribbeans are overwhelmingly Democratic and support Obama, said Felicia J. Persaud, a prominent CaribbeanAmerican activist and immigration columnist. She cautions, however, that enthusiasm for Obama has declined dramatically since 2008, due partially to the fact that the current administration has deported more illegal aliens than any before him. has definitely been a disappointment to Caribbean-Americans as with so many other groups. However, we are hopeful he will enact comprehensive immigration reform should he gain a second term, she said. Persaud suggests that Obama has likely taken an aggressive stance on illegal aliens in order to appease conservatives in the country who would be impressed by his "get tough" policy. The conservative Christian Caribbean nationals are also upset with Obama for supporting Gay marriage. This is not right in the sight of God, for our president to be supporting two men or two women getting married, a Bronx pastor noted. Everybody's Magazine which has been conducting presidential election surveys since 1980, "Caribbean-Americans" as immigrants and their offsprings from mainly the Anglophone or English speaking Caribbean. The Migration Policy Institute reported that between 2000 and 2009, nearly 1.1 million foreign-born Caribbeans became lawful permanent residents. About 55.4% of foreign-born Caribbeans are naturalized U.S. citizens, versus a figure of 43.7% of the overall foreign-born population.

n November 6, Americans go to the polls to elect their political representatives including president, vice-president as well as congress, assembly, city council representatives and mayors across the county. As expected the presidential race between President Barack Obama and GOP nominee Mitt Romney are taking the spotlight from the other elections. Voters are more focused on Obamas performance during the past four years and his plans for the second term and Romneys plans if elected president. Traditionally, a significant number of African Americans and

Caribbean immigrants always vote for the candidates on the Democratic ticket. On the other side, the more conservative and wealthy Americans constantly vote for the Republican Party. While, it would appear that both parties contributed equally to the failures and successes of America, party fanaticism and loyalists are not helping voters to select the best leaders among us. Voters with extreme and sometimes irrational enthusiasms or beliefs, especially in religion or politics always select inept and corrupt leaders.

We are urging all Americans to exercise their constitutional rights to vote on elections day. However, voting should come with responsibilities. We should not vote along partline or race, but, instead, analyze the issues as well as the policies and programs being put forward by the respective candidates. A vote based on a set of principles which you think will contribute the growth and development of every American citizen. On November 6 let us have a conscience vote, not a party vote.

felt compelled to write this article after I was asked to consider starting an organization that would help young girls to stop prostituting themselves in Jamaica. Before starting any task, I always research the pros and cons to decide if this is something that I could undertake. What I found was distressing and realized that as individuals we have to play a much bigger role to help uplift and protect the youths. I recalled meeting a young prostitute we would call Maria. Maria was born in Brooklyn to Dominican parents. I met Maria in one of Brooklyns projects housing while visiting a high school friend years back when I was in my first year of college. Upon entering the building, I noticed I was being watched by some guys in the lobby. Later, while in my friends apartment, Maria came and introduced herself to me. I later found out from her that her Pimp sent her to investigate me. Within the three weeks of our meeting, I found out a lot about her. At the age of thirteen, she was forced to lose her virginity to the Pimps twelve-year-old son. After that the Pimp had his share of her, and then started charging money from his friends to have sex with her. I kept going back to my friends house because I promised Maria that I would visit. She wanted me to tell her what college was like, and once she even asked me to teach her to read. Unfortunately, I could not help her because her Pimp sent her to another location. According to him she was wasting time hanging out at the apartment with us. Although this story happened in Brooklyn, it is not different from other girls being prostituted in the Caribbean places. Contrasting from some of the young girls that are voluntarily prostituting in Jamaica, in Guyana many of these girls as young as age 12 are forced into prostitution. Haiti also has its fair share of issues with young girls selling sex. In Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, a journalist captured the dreadful life of these prostitutes on video. A video posted on YouTube, explained the need for change in Haiti, as many turn their backs on this situation. One of the girls in the video explained that she started prostitution after she was kicked out by her aunt where she lived in the country. These girls make approximately $12 per night and not without the consequence of being physical abused or/and contracting STDs from the men that buy them. Many questions came to mind while doing my research, but I will focus on two thoughts. For one, the concern of contracting HIV/AIDs, and secondly, what we as a society are doing to get them off the streets. In case you missed this information, on August 2012 a report for the Washington Times covered a story that focused on legalizing prostitution. Pro-prostitution groups claim that the AIDS epidemic can be prevented if prostitution is legalized. The group was backed by the United Nations saying that selling sex should be legal. I am not sure how the legalization of prostitution will protect the sexual exploitation of little girls. In my opinion, legalizing prostitution may give predators more ammunition to hurt these girls. As for my second thought on what we as society will do to prevent young girls from turning to prostitution or be prostituted. I will leave that question for you the reader to think of a solution and play your part as these young girls could be our children.

over the years. Girls as young as twelve have found this old profession that dates back to the 18th Century BC from Ancient Babylon and Sumer. Some of these girls volunteer to sell their bodies to buy school supplies. According to a report in The Jamaican Weekend Star earlier this year, a number of schoolgirls from communities around St Catherine have been visiting the popular strip claiming to be hustling 'back-to-school' money. In a recent report by a UN refugee agency, Trinidad and Tobago is a destination, source, and transit country for adults and children subjected to sex trafficking. The report also stated that girls from South America and the Dominican Republic are used as prostitutes or conducting prostitution in some of Trinidads night clubs. According to another report Children in Guyana are victims of the worst forms of child labor, including forced prostitution of girls as young as 12. The Kaieteur News noted that the US Department of Labor (DOL) 2011 reported on International Child Labor and Forced Labor blamed children prostitution partially on the absence of legislative gaps and deficiency of a national action plan to battle child labor.

NEW YORK: ttorney General Eric T. Schneiderman recently announced that his office has filed a lawsuit against Tinny Beauty, Inc. and two of its officers, Lydia Leung and Alex Cheung, for misleading students about the requirements for becoming New York State licensed nail specialists. Tinny, a New York corporation located in Flushing, Queens, operates Tinny Beauty Int'l School, a non-degree proprietary school that offers classes in cosmetology, esthetics, nails, waxing and permanent makeup training. By using misleading and deceptive tactics, Tinny School convinced hundreds of unsuspecting consumers to pay them substantial fees to become licensed nail specialists in New York, but failed to provide them the necessary courses and training. The Attorney General's investigation revealed that, from approximately 2005 through at least 2010, Tinny President and founder Leung routinely affirmed on DOS applications that nail specialty license applicants had completed at least 250 hours of training at Tinny School when they had not. As a result of this fraudulent practice, hundreds of individuals have obtained nail specialty licenses despite not receiving the required training. Respondents charged individuals between $350 and $500 for their services. Since Tinny Schools fraudulent practices have come to light, some Tinny School nail specialists have had their licensed revoked by DOS for not completing the required 250 hours of instruction listed on their license applications. Others are subject to having their licenses revoked by the DOS or will not have their licenses renewed. Thus, these consumers cannot earn a living by providing nail services, despite their payments to Tinny School. Additionally, respondents' deceptive practices have created a safety risk to the public as many of these nail specialty

The Attorney General's lawsuit seeks full restitution for the hundreds of consumers injured in the scheme, penalties, fees, and injunctive relief prohibiting the company from continuing to engage in these fraudulent practices. The matter was handled by Assistant Attorney General Stephanie A. Sheehan, under the supervision of Deputy Bureau Chief of the Bureau of Consumer Frauds & Protection Laura J. CARIBBEAN NEWS
T
By TRENTON DANIEL PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP): he Caribbean death toll from Hurricane Sandy rose again sharply on Saturday, even as the storm swirled away toward the U.S. East Coast. Officials said the hurricane system has cost at least 58 lives in addition to destroying or badly damaging thousands of homes. While Jamaica, Cuba and the Bahamas took direct hits from the storm, the majority of deaths and most extensive damage was in impoverished Haiti, where it has rained almost non-stop since Tuesday. The official death toll in Haiti stood at 44 Saturday, but authorities said that could still rise. The countrys ramshackle housing and denuded hillsides are especially vulnerable to flooding when rains come. This is a disaster of major proportions, Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe told The Associated Press. The whole south is under water. He said the death toll jumped on Saturday because it was the first day that authorities were able to go out and assess the damage, which he estimated was in the hundreds of millions of dollars, the bulk of it in lost crops. Nineteen people are reported injured and another 12 are missing, according to Haitis Civil Protection Office. One of the remaining threats was a stillrising muddy river in the northern part of the capital, Port-au-Prince. If the river busts its banks, its going to create a lot of problems. It might kill a lot of people, said 51-year-old Seroine Pierre. If death comes, we'll accept it. Were suffering, were hungry, and were just going to die hungry. Officials reported flooding across Haiti, where 370,000 people are still living in flimsy shelters as a result of the devastating 2010 earthquake. Nearly 17,800 people had to move to 131 temporary shelters, the Civil Protection Office said. Among those hoping for a dry place to stay was 35-year-old Iliodor Derisma in Portau-Prince, who said the storm had caused a lot of anguish. Its wet all my clothes, and all the children arent living well, he said. Were hungry. We havent received any food. If we had a shelter, that would be nice. Santos Alexis, mayor of the southern city of Leogane, said Saturday that two people were reported dead there, including a man in his late 30s and a boy around 10 years old who drowned. He said the city was hit by heavy rains but that no major damage was reported. Water came into the houses, water got on the beds, but they didnt lose their homes, he said. Leogane was underwater mostly, but now we have less water.

Haiti. Fears are growing of food shortages in Haiti, after the strong winds and heavy rain of Hurricane Sandy caused extensive crop damage. Aid workers and officials are also warning, that flooding could lead to a sharp rise in cholera cases. Sandy has been blamed for some 70 deaths in the Caribbean. Of these, more than 50 were in Haiti. Sandy, which was a category one hurricane when it clipped Haiti last week, brought heavy rain and flooding. At least 20,000 people have been made homeless by the storm in Haiti. There is concern, that floods and unsanitary conditions could lead to an increase in cholera cases. More than 7. 500 people have died in the cholera epidemic in Haiti since late 2010.

Kingston, Jamaica ew data from the Central Bank show a marginal dip in net remittances to Jamaica in August. The figure amounted to US$147.9 million, which represented a reduction of US$1 million or 0.7 per cent relative to the corresponding period last year. This resulted from a decrease in gross inflows. During the month, total remittance inflows was US$170 million, a decline of US$4.4 million or 2.5 per cent when compared to August 2011. Despite the dip, the Bank of Jamaica says total remittances for the first eight months of the year were higher than last year. Net remittances amounted to US$1.8 billion which represented a growth of US$25.7 million or 2.2 per cent relative to the corresponding period of 2011.

President Michel Martelly and Lamothe handed out water bottles to dozens of people in a Port-au-Prince neighborhood on Friday. They also distributed money to local officials to help clean up the damage. Sandy left dozens of families homeless when it barreled across Jamaica Wednesday as a Category 1 hurricane. One man was crushed to death by a boulder that tumbled into his house. Military officials on Saturday were carrying supplies and doctors to five communities in the southern mountainous region that had been cut off by floods. The storm hit eastern Cuba as a Category 2 hurricane early Thursday. Eleven people died in Santiago and Guantanamo provinces and official news media said the storm caused 5,000 houses to at least partially collapse while 30,000 others lost roofs.

KINGSTON, Jamaica: amaican Opposition on Spokesman Finance Audley Shaw has hit out against the increase in fees by Jamaica Customs to clear personal-effects barrels. "It is unconAUDLEY SHAW scionable that just days after the devastation brought by Hurricane Sandy, the Customs department would make such a move, Shaw commented last night. Barrels such as the ones in question are sent by family members overseas to locals to augment their subsistence and to tax that shows that the Minister of Finance is not cognisant of the suffering many Jamaicans are currently experiencing," he added. Jamaica Customs Department announced that as of November 1.the fee to clear barrels containing personal effects would be increased to $6, 500, up from $5,000. The $1,500 increase, which comes on the approach of the Christmas season, is blamed on the depreciation of the Jamaican dollar since December 2009 when the rate was last set. Shaw called on the Finance minister and the Customs Department to demonstrate some compassion in this difficult time and suggested that the customs department roll back the increase or delay it until Jamaicans affected by Hurricane Sandy are back on their feet. He said people in areas such as St Thomas, Portland and St Mary were now, more than ever, depending on this assistance.

The worlds fastest man said he is still evaluating the possibility of taking on the long jump, but is concerned that his preparation for the event could make him more susceptible to knee injuries. Bolt already has intermittent problems associated with his spine condition, scoliosis. "The plan is (to compete in the) long

USAIN BOLT Bolt, who gained living legend status when he became the first man to successfully defend the 100- and 200metre titles at the London Olympics, remains undecided about whether he will try competing in either the long jump or the 400 in Rio. "We will sit down and evaluate if we want to do it," Bolt said at the news conference. "Because if I do it, I may jeopardise my opportunity to come to Rio, so I may not do long jump. It concerns me. We will look (it) over and see if it is possible."

The enquiry is now set to start on February 11, 2013. The case was postponed due to an outstanding forensic report, among other things. The artiste's $400,000 bail was extended until the February date. Mobile Banking Advances in cellular technology have created a myriad of new ways for diaspora members to connect with their countries of origin. Mobile banking technology has found a rich market within diaspora communities. The World Bank estimates that U.S. diaspora populations remitted more than $50 billion to their countries of origin in 2010 alone. This phenomenon has not only enlivened traditional money transfer companies that were struggling with market share, but it has been a catalyst for new applications in mobile banking. The pioneering mobile banking service Boom Financial targets diaspora markets in the United States and Mexico. The company provides not only remittance services, but also meets other basic financial services needs of underbanked and unbanked consumers. Mobile banking has the potential to eliminate the high fees and security issues associated with cash remittances.

Expanding Access to Cellular Technology Digicel Jamaica is the fastest growing company in the island nation and serves as another powerful example of how technology can help a country leapfrog traditional stages of development. By increasing access to cellular technology and connecting people, including those in remote areas, with family and friends in the diaspora, Digicel Jamaica has made telecommunications more ubiquitous perhaps than indoor plumbing in rural parts of the island. The diaspora is in part responsible for the unprecedented success of Digicel, which only began to operate in the Caribbean in 2001. The company supports diaspora entrepreneurship by hiring diaspora members to distribute Digicel calling cards and other services and running grassroots marketing and advertising outlets.

iaspora communities demand technology that responds to their particular remittance-based, philanthropic, entrepreneurial, and social engagement-based needs. As a result, existing technologies are being applied in diaspora-focused markets and new technologies are being developed exclusively to address diaspora consumers challenges and needs. This process has the potential to spur economic development and open new pathways to social empowerment for peoples of developing nations.

Its potential for addressing development issues should make access to new technology a priority for diaspora innovators and development stakeholders, particularly in small and medium-sized economies. Increased access in these economies could be achieved, in part, by the transfer and sharing of technology across borders, using the diaspora corridor as a conduit.

After all, teachers are supposed to be fair, loving, and sensitive, arent they? Well, teachers are human and life isnt always fair. teachers, but you have to try for your childs sake. Not every teacher is going to respond to your child the way the previous teacher did. Furthermore, once you become open to more positive experiences, your child will follow suit and will become more optimistic as well. Here are some ways to make this change: 1. Pay attention to your negative thoughts about this new school experience. For example, just because the teacher reprimands your child does not mean that the teacher hates him. 2. Are you interpreting the situation accurately? Or are negative emotions clouding your assessment? For example, do you think that the teacher hates your daughter just because she does not smile at your child? There could be other reasons, such as; the teacher may have been distracted at that moment. 3. Try not to let negative past experiences dominate your perception of all teachers. This will lead to distorted perceptions without evidence.

By Michelle Ardito-Barnes t was a Tuesday.. July 10, 2012 to be exact. I had done my annual mammogram the prior week and my doctor had called a few days later to say they wanted me to do a biopsy. Not my first biopsy so I wasnt concerned. After all, I had always been told I had fibrocystic breasts and additionally, I had removed a benign lump when I was 27 and that had left some scar tissue. So back to Tuesday. I had done the biopsy the day before and my physician said she would call on Wednesday because the results took 48 hours. I was in the office, and saw my phone vibrate with my physicians number on the caller ID. Why was she calling I wondered? Doctors barely meet their own deadlines, much more beat them. I allowed the phone to go to voicemail and immediately retrieved the message she left please call as soon as you have a chance she said. I quickly got up from my desk and headed for the door. My heart immediately assumed a new rhythm, a really fast one, I smelled fear rising up from the core of my insides. My doctor came on the line and it went something like this ...you have tested positive for breast cancer and.. she continued to talk and I heard nothing more. Nothing. I looked up to the sky and I began a weird nonsensical conversation with God. My doctor said hello?. I said yes, what stage is it? 15 years before I had asked the same question of another physician when he told me my mother had breast cancer. The answer at that time was stage 4 . Within 4 months of that date, my 5 10, 180-lb vivacious, 51 year old mother was dead. Just like that. I am still on the phone with my doctor. She said I have stage 0 cancer. What?...I thought while still having this subconscious conversation with God, I didnt even know cancer came in a 0 stage! My doctor explained that the cancer appeared to be in the duct of the left breast but to determine any treatment plan I needed to do an MRI as soon as possible. They arranged the MRI within 48 hours. I was then called in to my doctors office to discuss the treatment plan because I still couldnt own it as my treatment plan, I still didnt know for sure if this was really happening to me. My husband took the day off from work. I didnt. That would give me too much time to think. My doctor, in a nutshell, said based on the results of the MRI and the extent of the area affected, she would recommend that I do a left breast mastectomy with reconstructive surgery. I immediately asked whether this meant I would still have to continuously monitor the right breast and she advised yes. If my life had been in such turmoil in only one week, I could not imagine what looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life would do to me. I told her no and it appears she misunderstood, no - I was not going to remove one breast, I was going to remove both. My breasts were now officially the enemy and I was about to wage war. I had prayed long and hard, I had done the research and I stayed up many nights thinking about it. I was sure. After meetings with my breast surgeon, plastic surgeon and the oncologist, a date was set. It was the longest 3 weeks of my life. My breast surgeon explained that they would remove all the tissue completely from both breasts, the entire left nipple and areola

as well as lymph nodes for testing . Only the skin would remain. My plastic surgeon explained that he would come in immediately after and place an expander under the skin then close me up. Two days before my surgery, I walked into a store and looked at a low cut dress, was on my way to the cashier to pay for it and remembered that in 2 days I would not have breasts and broke down crying.

I did the surgery. The physical healing is tough but love and support from family and friends will make you forget that. I went back to work after 2 weeks. A few days before, I went to see my oncologist. The good report I prayed for was awaiting my arrival. The cancer had not spread to my lymph nodes, it was confined to the breast duct and because of my radical decision to do the bilateral mastectomy, I would not have to undergo chemotherapy or radiation or take medication. God surely got tired of hearing me say thanks! I am grateful for this journey. I have grown immeasurably and I know my experience could easily have been like my mothers and like so many other women before and since her untimely death. I know in many ways I am special and in so many ways I am no different from other women because cancer chose me. I did not have a say in that choice but I certainly had a say in whether breast cancer or the threat of breast cancer would continue to haunt me. I am here and I am strong and I... am a survivor!

he first five years can be exhilarating as couples experience new firsts together - their first Christmas as a married couple, first dinner party for the in-laws, even their first joint tax return. Learning the art of negotiating can resolve many of these issues, but it takes maturity and patience. Help is available if the couple has the wisdom and humility to seek it. The most important thing to remember is that most of the early stressful adjustments in marriage are normal. According to research done, the top three issues for couples during the first five years of marriage are time, sex, and money: Time You would think that combining households would simplify life and save time. But newly married couples have to keep up with their spouses schedule in addition to their own. Add in jobs, education, time for new in-laws and private time. Then, when the first child arrives, you realize that life will never be the same. Most newlyweds struggle to balance family and work. Since work pays the bills, its tempting to consider it the top priority. An all-consuming job, you may need to agree on how many extra hours you can reasonably work. Carving out quality time for the two of you can require sacrifice, such as cutting back on personal hobbies or workouts at the gym. At some point you may need to summon the courage to look for a different job or work out together. Sex Sex should be the easy and fun part. After all, youre married! Why would this cause stress? Your sexual relationship should be comfortable and exciting, especially during the early years of marriage. Most couples problems are the frequency and quality of their sexual relations. Developing a gratifying sexual relationship depends on having the time and energy to tend to it. Money Most newlyweds are at the beginning of their earning curve. They are also learning to understand and blend their individual attitudes toward money. All of this can be stressful. In addition, many couples bring debt into the marriage, and some couples accumulate too much debt.

Another issue is: Who has the power? Many couples consider themselves egalitarian, Well share everything. Then she finds herself uncomfortable with the loose way he spends their hard earned money and hes annoyed by the way she hoards it. Other issues include parenting, religious differences, and conflict resolution. Sometimes, the very issues that should bring a couple together, a child, faith, and communication, also cause strain. Because couples care so strong about these things they are both potential dividers and bonders. The arrival of a child brings joy and stress. Parents can feel overwhelmed with the responsibility of caring for a child, in addition to the loss of privacy and freedom. Parenting is hard work and when spouses are tired, they get irritable, just like kids. Shared faith can bind the spouses together. It also requires that a couple talk about their different approaches to spirituality and God. Some people would rather ignore this part of life out of fear, guilt, or bad experiences. Good communication skills, compromise, unselfishness, and an open mind can help you work through the above issues. thought I might have been pregnant. I'm not-but I want to be. I know I'm not ready to be a mom, but I want someone to love me and depend on me. I need someone who won't leave me. heartache. Any young woman considering having a child must ask herself how she can provide financially and emotionally for that child. Most teenaged girls who become pregnant do not complete their high school education, and it has a negative impact on their ability to provide for themselves and their children. The right way to work through this breakup is to talk to your mother or another trusted adult about your feelings. Stop trying to maintain contact with your former

boyfriend. To continue will only prolong your pain. Dedicate yourself to achieving the most you can for yourself in sports and academics. It will give you less time to brood, and the more you achieve the more sought-after you will become. It won't happen overnight. It will take time, concentration and dedication. If you take my advice you will come out of this disappointment a much happier person. But having a baby is not the answer. -Always, Divine Diva

ARIES (Mar. 21Apr. 19): Giving up is not an option because you have already worked too hard to get this far. Pay attention to how your perspective is changing, but don't try to put your thoughts into action until later. TAURUS (Apr. 20 May 20): You are eager to make steady progress, but it could prove to be elusive for a while longer. One of your current challenges is to keep your life in motion without necessarily knowing exactly where you are going. GEMINI (May 21Jun. 20): Don't blame others if you feel frustrated; it's a good idea to reflect on a past action that has contributed to your current dilemma. CANCER (Jun. 21 Jul. 22): Make time for meditation, but don't worry if nothing very productive comes from your contemplation right away. You can still receive great benefit from focusing on your spiritual practice now. LEO (Jul. 23 Aug. 22): You can consciously move your energy in a new direction. Take it slowly now and remember to review recent events in order to be more certain about your current choices. VIRGO (Aug. 23Sept. 22): Allow yourself to feel uncomfortable for a while, especially if you're thinking about things that cannot be changed. Don't be concerned if you are lacking answers; solutions will present themselves just in time. . LIBRA (Sept. 23Oct.22): It's tough to be serious enough to meet all your obligations, but nevertheless, this is what you must do now. Accept the inevitable and do whatever you can without wasting energy by complaining or whining. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 Nov. 21): Cut yourself some slack and don't try to accomplish more than is absolutely necessary. Even if someone appears to be on your case, avoid any direct confrontation. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 Dec.21): A high-frequency buzz may develop as your day unfolds, but it's not necessary to turn any of your thoughts into practical applications. Still, it's a good idea to take the first step on one simple project, instead of biting off more than is required. Just keep the energy moving forward and watch where it takes you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 Jan. 19): It's not that you aren't fully capable of doing what others want; it's just you could be uncertain about what's expected of you today. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 Feb. 18): Beauty appears all around you, but it's also within your mind. Be careful about confusing your subjective experience with the objective world. PISCES (Feb. 19 Mar. 20): Pay attention to every little thing happening on the home front, since there might be a miscommunication that twists the day out of shape. You may need to backtrack later in the day to clear up a misunderstandissng.

ew research powerfully strengthens the case against soda and other sugary drinks as culprits in the obesity epidemic. A huge, decades-long study involving more than 33,000 Americans has yielded the first clear proof that drinking sugary beverages interacts with genes that affect weight, amplifying a person's risk of obesity beyond what it would be from heredity alone.

am appealing to everyone especially our Caribbean brothers and sisters. I have been asked to purchase a Linear Accelerator Machine for Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay, Jamaica costing approximately US $5 Million. If 500,000 people give a one-time donation of $10, we will be closer to our goal. Please send donations to Vincent HoSang Family Foundation (VHFF), 117 Route 303, Suite B, Tappan, NY 10983. he Health Department is urging New Yorkers to be careful when using portable generators in order to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide poisoning is the most common poison-related cause of hospitalization and death in the wake of hurricanes. It is called the "silent killer" because it causes no odors or symptoms to signal a problem. When people use generators improperly too close to homes, in garages, or outside bedroom windows carbon monoxide can seep in and cause illness or death. Here are simple tips for New Yorkers: Generators can be safely used outdoors away from windows and ventilation intake ducts. NEVER use portable generators indoors, in garages or near open windows. Do not siphon gasoline by mouth to fill a generator with fuel. Use battery-operated (or batterybackup) carbon monoxide alarms. Be sure to test the batteries. If you experience sleepiness, dizziness, headaches, confusion, weakness, or your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, immediately seek fresh air and call the Poison Control Center (212) POISONS (764-7667) or 911.

f you're ready to grow, take a look at these tips. Open another location. This is often the first way business owners approach growth. If you feel confident that your current business location is under control, consider expanding by opening a new location. Offer your business as a franchise or business opportunity. Franchising your business will allow for growth without requiring you to manage the new location. This will help to maximize the time you spend improving your business in other ways, too. License your product. This can be an effective, low-cost growth medium, particularly if you have a service product or branded product. Licensing also minimizes your risk and is low cost in comparison to the price of starting your own company to produce and sell your brand or product. To find a licensing partner, start by researching companies that provide products or services similar to yours. Form an alliance. Aligning yourself with a similar type of business can be a powerful way to expand quickly. Diversify. Diversifying is an excellent strategy for growth, because it allows you to have multiple streams of income that can often fill seasonal voids and, of course, increase sales and profit margins. Here are a few of the most common ways to diversify: Sell complementary products or services; Teach adult education or other types of classes; Import or export yours or others' products; Become a paid speaker or columnist Target other markets. Your current market is serving you well. Are there others? Probably. Use your imagination to determine what other markets could use your product. Win a government contract. One of the best ways to grow your business is to win business from the government. Work with your local SBA and Small Business Development Center to help you determine the types of contracts available to you. Merge with or acquire another business. Two is always bigger than one.

Ideas for Growing Your Business

Investigate companies that are similar to yours, or that have offerings that are complementary to yours, and consider the benefits of combining forces or acquiring the company. Expand globally. To do this, you'll need a foreign distributor who can carry your product and resell it in their domestic

markets. You can locate foreign distributors by scouring your city or state for a foreign company with a U.S. representative. Expand to the Internet. Very often, customers discover a business through an online search engine. Be sure that your business has an online presence in order to maximize your exposure.

othing that interesting came out of the third and final Presidential debate because the candidates did not mention the plight Americans are facing today. Instead, they focused on the "WAR" in the middle east. The party debates seem to be entertaining at the expense of the working class citizens. These debates have been a reality game show. Who was the winner? Democrats or Republicans? The war on poverty, sickness, jobs, fair housing, were not the main interest of either candidates, nor were the conditions that are affecting all Americans, in today's economy. The Presidential race has become a showcase on the personalities of the candidates. When will they begin to address the needs of millions? Americans are hungry, homeless and unemployed because of failed policies and corruption. The country, the state and the city are failing us desperately.

The debates were like reality game shows

We have a depression among African American workers. We need to address this deep and growing depression that the average citizens are enduring. The President must take action now to either put these folks to work with a decent paying job or a guaranteed income for all Americans. It is already late, What needs to be done must be done now. We are calling on you Mr. President, Governor, Mayor and all elected officials to address the 99% of Americans who are suffering financially.

We are calling on the people to rally for fairness, justice and equality. Americans are ready, willing and able to work to rebuild the economy. An honest days pay for a hard days work. The jobs should be here and not outsourced. We have to bring back the focus of our elected officials on ways to eradicate our present living conditions. The failure to address the hardship of the average American worker is a denial of the painful truth that we need action to avert more tragedies and violence. -
