As a reseller of spiral wound gaskets with graphite filler, you will need to conform to the new language either by supplying spirals with inner rings (Style CGI) or by obtaining confirmation from your customer that they want non inner ring gaskets (Style CG). Should a customer simply ask for a spiral that conforms to ASME B16.20 manufactured with graphite, you will need to supply an inner ring gasket or be subjected to possible returns or even worse defend your action in the event of a failure. By not addressing this issue, supplying NON SPEC ASME B16.20 gaskets could become a real issue. By discussing the new code requirements with your customers now, you can avoid getting a black eye for not meeting code specifications.

Per ASME B16.20 inner rings are mandatory in the following applications: Pressure Class 900, NPS 24 and larger Pressure Class 1500, NPS 12 and larger Pressure Class 2500, NPS 4 and larger All PTFE filled spiral wound gaskets ASME B16.20 also recommends inner rings in applications where inward buckling has been experienced.

RTJ Gaskets
When an RTJ is bolted up in a flange, a very high surface stress is generated between the RTJ gasket and the flange groove This stress is sufficient to cause plastic deformation permanent deformation of the metal, so RTJ gaskets should not be reused As metals deform they work harden hardness increases The RTJ material must be softer than the flange groove to avoid deformation of the flange groove The difference in initial hardness should be 1520 Brinnell

Bolt Up Procedure
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. Check gasket for correct size and damage. Do not put anything on the face of the gasket. Check flange for damage, flatness, and parallelism. Check flange surface finish - 125 to 250 RMS, AARH. Check bolts to see if they are B-7 or better and have no damaged threads. Evaluate washer use. Lubricate bolts and the bottom of the nuts with a Petroleum/Graphite mix. You can loose 50% of the torque from friction. Use a cross bolting pattern. Use chart for torque requirements. Make a minimum of three passes with not more than 33% of the load per pass. Check for flange rotation (bending). High temperature applications may require re-torque in 24 hours.
