days and how it wrought havoc and devastation to the East Coast. While natural calamities like this is nothing new, although they said this was the worst the country have experienced, it still provides us something to ponder. The usual arguments of atheists and former believers who have given up their faith after having experienced or witnessed undue pain and sufferings: if there is a loving and caring God how come He allowed things like this to happen? While this question may be ignored at times, it becomes alive every time natural disasters like this strikes or when bad things happen especially to good people. I wont claim that I understand Gods mind completely (I could never be, "As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts" Isaiah 55:9). But with humility I could only try to reason out that God has never promised us an easy life in this world. On the contrary, he challenged us Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. (Luke 9:23) God of course, in His omnipotence, could prevent such things to happen. Christ allayed His disciples fears when He calmed the waves and commanded the wind to stop; but He did allow almost all of them to die a martyrs death! When He allowed that to happen it doesnt mean that He no longer loves them. It was their willingness to accept a martyrs death and the grace of God that sustains them that point out to the glory that awaits them! Just like Christ Himself when He offered His life on the cross, the Father continued to love His Son, but allowed it to happen for the greater glory that is our own salvation. Added to this, while God allows pain and suffering, He doesnt abandon us completely, He gives us the grace to persevere! He may not heal our sickness, nor prevent natural disaster to happen, but He does sustain us with the grace to be strong! Thats why we need always to pray even in the midst of all these calamities. Pope Benedict XVI has also offered prayers for those affected by Sandy. After one disaster the Pope said "I would like to assure the people of my closeness in concern and prayer. May God, in his goodness, take pity on his people and hear the

voices of those who call him (Psalm 5:3) and implore his aid! And with the Psalmist I say: Arise, O Lord; O God, lift up your hand; forget not the afflicted (Psalm 10:12)." On another note, Election Day is here! Let us pray for guidance for all the voters this coming Tuesday, that voters will open their minds and heart to the promptings of the Holy Spirit that the will of God may be reflected on the ballot. May the voters be able to realize that to vote is part of the gift of freedom that God has given us so that the power of those elected do not come not just from the people but from God Himself! Acknowledging voting as Gods gift, may we consider the moral values and issues that are involve in each candidate we are about to vote. Thank you to Kelly Schaub for volunteering her time and talent to teach catechism to our children here in Arma. She is a kindergarten teacher herself, so she is putting her gift to the service of the Lord. So we are back again to three catechists. We also thank Aubri Ashbacher for serving as helper to our catechists every Sunday! This is a kind of announcement. We have someone cleaning our church and hall for now, but if any of our parishioners would be willing to do this job (with pay per hour, about three hours a week) every week, please contact me at the parish office. Please leave your name and number and say that you are interested with the job, and we can include you for our consideration. Thank you and God bless you! Fr. Roger

We all have opinions on many issues whether is be suicide, poverty, or health care. However, all political issues do not carry the same weight in the formation of our Catholic conscience. Ones conscience is not the same as ones opinion because conscience is the voice of truth within you, meaning what you know to be truly right according to the natural moral law, the Ten Commandments, and the teaching of the Churchs Magisterium. Certain issues involve inherent evil, such as abortion, and Catholics should present a unified front in opposing them. Other examples would be assisted suicide, euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, and the attempt to redefine marriage. These contradict the natural law and violate our moral principles, hence our conscience should reject them. They go against Catholic teachings on what is right and what is wrong. Then, we have other political issues that dont involve a choice between inherent good or evil policy such as poverty, the environment, criminal justice, immigration, and health care. As Catholics, were concerned with the common good and these issues bear directly on it; therefore, we would vote our own opinions based on Catholic moral principles as to which policy would best serve the common good. Because abortion is such a huge moral issue that has claimed over 50 million babies lives during these past 40 years, it should take priority over even critically important questions like restoring our economy. Catholics have a moral obligation as voters to end evil public policies that harm our most vulnerable. Catholics who choose to stand by political leaders who support abortion must also bear some responsibility for this enormous loss of life. If government doesnt protect our right to life--all other rights are not safe either. Bring your Catholic conscience along with you when you vote November 6th. October Baby: Abortion Gone Wrong The March For Life participants from St. Michaels at Girard, along with Fr. Lumbre, hosted the showing of October Baby last Saturday evening. It was a film about a teenage girl who finds out that she was born from a botched abortion. Helen and I decided to go and were glad that we did, for it was well-done with good actors who made the story believable. Wed recommend that you rent it, for it holds your attention and delivers an educational pro-life message. We often hear that abortions are done because the girl doesnt want the baby. At that stage, its more likely an unwanted pregnancy. Even if the natural parents didnt want the child, that baby is wanted by scores of couples who spend lots of time and money trying to adopt. I read not long ago of a baby placed on the doorstep of a KC hospital. Within hours of this news getting out, the hospital was blanketed with calls from families wanting to adopt that child. Some say that its better to abort than have a child that you don't want and perhaps youll abuse later. Yet police records reveal that most abusing parents wanted their children. Many abused little boys in child protection were proudly given their Dads name at birth. That didnt stop the abuse later when circumstances changed. This logic seems to be saying: by keeping abortion a legal option, child abuse should go down, since only wanted babies will be born. Do you believe thats what is happening today? Election 2012 - Time to Decide Were fortunate to live in a nation where we have the right to express ourselves at the ballot box by choosing who will govern us. We can exercise that right without fear of reprisals such as imprisonment or even death, as some countries have done. We have this privilege that was purchased at a high price and therefore, we shouldnt take it for granted. When we go to vote, our choices should reflect our core beliefs based on our moral principles that we learned years ago in catechism or, if were converts, what was taught and explained during instructions.
