Aboriginal Youth Harm Reduction Outreach Educator, 14 hours a week starting Nov, 2012 CTCHC is a non-profit, community-based health organization committed to improving the health of community members, particularly those at risk for poverty and discrimination. Our multi-disciplinary approach includes the provision of primary health/dental care, counselling, harm reduction, community development, advocacy, and innovative partnerships with other organizations. CTCHC is a leader in the development of inner-city health services and focuses on the needs of homeless and street involved adults and youth adults and families. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES Using a harm reduction approach, the Aboriginal Youth Harm Reduction Worker responds to the needs of Aboriginal youth through outreach, resource development and distribution, crisis intervention and community education. The Aboriginal Youth Harm Reduction Worker will liaise with partner organizations, The Native Canadian Centre and Madison Community Services and other organizations regarding the needs of Aboriginal youth who use drugs with a focus on educating service providers, expansion of services and advocacy on issues affecting this community. Accountable to: The Aboriginal Youth Harm Reduction Outreach Educator will work collaboratively with staff from The Native Canadian Centre and Madison Community Services and will be accountable to The Director of Integration and Urban Health at CTCHC. Responsibilities: Provides Harm Reduction services and client support, including the distribution of harm reduction supplies , as well as information, informal counselling, referrals and advocacy Perform outreach to connect Aboriginal youth to services and ensure they have resources to stay safe. To work with community members to identify community issues and develop, implement, monitor and evaluate activities Provide community development and health promotion strategies and programs to meet community needs. Provide educational workshops to users and providers on harm reduction Act as a resource to, and advocate for individuals, groups and communities Establish and maintain links and develop partnerships with other resources within the organization and community. QUALIFICATIONS 1. Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline from a recognized university or combination of some post secondary education and significant experience in health promotion and/or community development 2. Three to five years relevant harm reduction experience in a community setting working with youth with drug use issues and/or mental health issues. 3. Knowledge and experience in working with Aboriginal Youth and in community capacity building with Aboriginal communities

4. Experience in working with partner organizations 5. Experience in program development, implementation, monitoring, evaluation 6. Excellent ability to take initiative and work independently, while also working within a multi-disciplinary team. 7. Experience working with community members and peers and in providing harm reduction education and outreach. 8. Proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications 9. Strong communication and conflict resolution skills and crisis intervention skills 10. Proficiency in language(s) other than English is considered an asset. Salary: $44,516 to $53,633 (prorated) plus generous benefits (includes same-sex spousal benefits). This is a UFCW bargaining position.
