USE & APPLICATION PRECAUTIONS

Handling Insulation may cause temporary irritation. Wear long-sleeved, loose-fitting clothes, gloves and eye protection when handling material. Wash with soap and warm water after handling. Wash work clothes separately and rinse washer. A disposable mask designed for nuisance-type dusts is advisable where high dust levels are encountered. Dust collection should be used in operations involving cutting or machining and may be required in operations using power tools. Respiratory Protection When the temperature of the surface being insulated exceeds 250F (121C) including system startup, the binder in these products may undergo various degrees of decomposition depending on the application temperature. The need for respiratory protection will vary according to the airborne concentration of the decomposition products released and accumulated in the area. In areas with good general and/or local exhaust ventilation, where exposures are controlled below the formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and ammonia PEL or STEL, and additive effects have been factored in, respiratory protection is normally not needed. If the insulation is installed on hot surfaces above 250F (121C), a full-face respirator with cartridges approved for protection against organic vapors (or formaldehyde, if available) should be used. Refer to the appropriate Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for further information on any of the above subjects. Welding Heat may be generated from the resinous binder of insulations if ignited by external sources such as welding slag, cutting torches, etc. Care should be taken to avoid direct contact with the insulation by fire or ignition sources. Painting If painting indoor applications with ASJ, FRK, or FSP jacketing, use only water base latex paint. Outdoor applications require weather protection. Reinstallation It is not usually possible or practical to reinstall these insulation products on pipes or equipment if, after their original installation and exposure to elevated temperatures, they have been removed for any reason.

HEALTH ASPECTS
The health effects of fiber glass have been studied for more than 50 years. Several national and international organizations have reviewed that research and evaluated the hazards and risks possibly associated with this material. Upon request, Owens Corning will provide literature discussing these evaluations and the health issues in greater detail. Owens Corning is confident that fiber glass insulation is safe to use when recommended work practices are followed. The health and safety label located on the package and the appropriate Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) should be reviewed before installing these products. If the label or MSDS is not available, contact your local supplier or write: Owens Corning World Headquarters, One Owens Corning Parkway, Toledo, OH 43659, or call 1-419-248-8234 for a copy of the current label and MSDS.

ABOUT THE DATA IN THIS CATALOG

Heat Loss and Surface Temperature Catalog data were determined by ASTM recommended practice and by use of a computer program designated ASTM C 680.Values are based on the thermal characteristics of the materials and the application of these values is subject to the limitations described in the ASTM method. Surface Burning Characteristics ASTM E 84, UL 723, and NFPA 255 are considered by most officials to be synonymous surface burning test methods. CAN/ULC-S102 is similar to the previous three methods, but differences in calculation procedures produce flame spread results that are approximately 10% higher. Due to specific requirements, some products may require factory follow-up service and associated labeling and listing. Owens Corning has chosen Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. to provide this service. Notes: Installation recommendations presented are general in nature. Application procedure is at the discretion and responsibility of the design engineer using industry standards and/or Owens Corning recommendations. Physical property values presented in this catalog are nominal values obtained by using listed methods. Data are subject to normal manufacturing variations and are subject to change without notice. The most recent version of this catalog supersedes all previous versions. Contact the Owens Corning Web site at www.owenscorning.com or call 1-800-GET-PINK for the most current information. FIBER GLASS AND MOLD

As manufactured, fiber glass insulation is resistant to mold growth.* However, mold growth can occur on building materials, including insulation, when it becomes contaminated with organic materials and when water is present. To avoid mold growth on fiber glass insulation, remove any water that has accumulated and correct or repair the source of that water as soon as possible. Insulation that has become wet should be inspected for evidence of residual moisture and contamination, and any insulation that is contaminated should be promptly removed and replaced.

INSULATION FOR MECHANICAL SYSTEMS

VAPORWICK PIPE INSULATION

PIPE INSULATION SYSTEMS PRODUCT DATA

HELPS ELIMINATE MOISTURE PROBLEMS CAUSED BY CONDENSATION

Owens Corning VaporWick Pipe Insulation is an innovative new insulation product designed specifically for below-ambient temperature applications in severe hot/humid operating environments. The heart of the system is a wick material that transports condensed water to the outside of the system for evaporation to the atmosphere. The wick keeps the fiber glass insulation dry, preventing dripping and allowing the insulation to perform effectively over the life of the project. The one-piece, 36" (914 mm) long molded sections of VaporWick come in standard sizes and are composed of heavy density fiber glass insulation with an organic binder. The synthetic wicking material is factory-installed on the inner surface of the assembly. The sections are opened, placed over the pipe, closed and secured with a pressure-sensitive adhesive closure. The insulation is factory-jacketed with a resilient, tough, soil-resistant polymer facing that matches standard PVC fitting covers. Auxiliary items include rolls of wick material for wrapping elbows and valves, and matching butt joint sealing tape for system closure.

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Keeps Insulation Dry VaporWick incorporates a specially designed wicking material that absorbs condensed water from the pipe surface and wicks it to the outside, keeping the insulation dry and minimizing any loss in insulating capability. This prevents dripping and the associated staining of ceiling tiles and damage to the building contents. Dual Temperature Applications VaporWick is rated for operating temperatures (which range from 32F to 220F), making it ideal for dual temperature installations. Meets Model Code Fire Requirements UL Classified for Surface Burning Characteristics. Flame spread rating of 25 or less, and smoke development rating of 50 or less means that VaporWick Pipe Insulation will be granted immediate building code approval for use in air plenums and other critical locations. Excellent Thermal Value The low thermal conductivity of VaporWick contributes to lower operating costs at a favorable installed cost/performance ratio. Can Be Installed Directly Over Wet Piping Self-drying feature allows product to be installed on wet pipes. Systems do not need to be shut down during installation of the VaporWick System.

DESCRIPTION & USES

The VaporWick System was developed for piping systems that operate at below-ambient temperatures and dual temperature piping operating at temperatures from 32F (0C) to 220F (104C) in buildings and industrial facilities. These conditions present special considerations due to the possibility of water vapor migration to the cold pipe surface. If the operating temperature of the piping system is below the dew point of the ambient air, moisture will condense on the cold pipe surface. With time, the condensed water will accumulate, reducing the R-value* of the insulation, and possibly resulting in dripping, which can stain ceiling tiles and damage building contents below. The problem is not limited to open cell insulation materials. Many closed-cell insulations have low water vapor permeability, yet water buildup is a serious problem due to incomplete sealing at longitudinal seams and butt joints. Traditionally, designers have relied on vapor retarders and mastics or other sealants to slow the ingress of moisture. This approach is highly dependent on the skill and experience of the installers. In contrast, VaporWick incorporates a patented concept that utilizes a unique wicking material to remove condensed water from the system, keeping the insulation dry. Water vapor that enters the system and condenses on the cold pipe surface is removed to the outer surface by capillary action, where it then evaporates to the ambient air.
*R-values differ. Higher R-values mean greater insulating power.

Self-Sealing Lap Seal **Exception required for maximum temperature. Positive closure is fast, neat and foolproof. No need Preproduction qualification testing complete and on file. Chemical analysis of each production lot required for total conformance. for staples or mastic.

Meets Requirements for Mold and Fungi Resistance VaporWick provides no sustenance for mold to propagate and meets the standard ASTM test for fungi resistance.

INSTALLATION RECOMMENDATIONS
32F to 220F (0C to 104C) < 0.15 perm > 50 units Meets requirements Meets requirements Flame spread 25(1) Smoke developed 50 Installation of VaporWick pipe insulation is similar to regular fiber glass pipe covering. See VaporWick Installation Instructions for complete details (Publication # 15-IN-44645). The VaporWick System can be applied on new and retrofit jobs. Unlike traditional insulation, this system may readily be installed on operating systems even if the pipes are wet and slightly corroded. Caution is needed on severely corroded sections as pipe diameters may exceed those listed in ASTM C 585. This may cause an improper pipe fit and result in overloading of the system and/or failure of the closure tape resulting in system failure. For severely corroded pipes, rust and scale should be removed before installation. Ensure that the recommended thickness has been specified to prevent surface condensation. The VaporWick System is not recommended for outdoors or exposed piping where additional jacket finish is required. The evaporation holes must remain uncovered and unpainted at all times after installation. Painting or covering over the evaporation holes will defeat the function of the system. Use of stickers, labels, or colored tape is recommended for pipe service identification.

APPLICATION RECOMMENDATIONS
Measure the length of insulation required according to the fabrication guide located on the carton. Cut completely through the insulation and jacket. Use a flap tool to filet a stapling flange on one end of the insulation. Each 36" (914 mm) section of insulation may be secured around the pipe using staples and mastic, or by applying staples and pressure-sensitive vapor retarder tape. Special care must be taken to vapor seal systems operating below ambient temperatures. Adjacent sections must be tightly butted together, then sealed with vapor retarder tape. If indoor applications will be painted, use only a water based latex paint. Outdoor applications require protection against weather.

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Fiberglas FlexWrap is a cost-effective alternative to larger sized pre-formed pipe insulation. Fiberglas FlexWrap fits all pipes and equipment of 10" NPS and larger which reduces inventory requirement caused by multiple diameter requirements. Fiberglas FlexWrap installs easily. The continuous blanket of material easily wraps tanks, pipes, and irregular shaped objects without the efficiency losses related to strip delamination of fabricated and segmented wrap. Low thermal conductivity compared to segmented products means less thickness is required for equivalent heat flow. Fiberglas FlexWrap complies with ASTM C 1393 Types I, II, IIIA, and IIIB, Category 2., Standard Specification for Perpendicularly Oriented Mineral Fiber Roll and Sheet Thermal Insulation for Pipes and Tanks.

The surface burning characteristics of these products have been determined in accordance with ASTM E 84. Table at left provides saddle size and spacing recommendations when insulated piping is supported by hangers beneath the insulation rather than from the piping. For pipes smaller than 1" (25 mm), use 1" (25 mm) values. For NPS (DN) sizes between those listed, interpolate between the listed values. High compressive strength pipe insulation inserts are required for NPS (DN) pipe sizes greater than 3" (80 mm) and for all applications on piping systems operating above 350F (177C), to prevent the weight of the pipe from crushing the insulation. Such inserts may be calcium silicate or perlite for high temperature installation. On cold systems, use cellular glass or high-density foam insulation. An alternate method of supporting low-density insulation on cold applications with field-applied metal jacketing is the use of high density fiber glass or foam blocks placed between the pipe and the saddle. For details refer to Midwest Insulation Contractors Association National Insulation Standards.

INSULATION FOR MECHANICAL SYSTEMS

SOFTR ALL-SERVICE FIBER GLASS DUCT WRAP

PRODUCT DATA

DESCRIPTION & USES

SOFTR All-Service Fiber Glass Duct Wrap is a blanket of glass fiber insulation factory-laminated to FRK vapor retarder facing with a 2" (50 mm) stapling and taping flange on one edge. Designed to meet existing performance standards such as NFPA 90A/90B and other model building and energy codes. Used for external insulation of commercial and residential heating, air conditioning and dualtemperature ducts operating at temperatures from 40F (4C) to 250F (121C). This insulation, when applied in accordance with installation instructions, will provide the installed R-value* as published for the product and printed on the facing, assuring the specified in-place thermal performance and condensation control. When installed in accordance with instructions so the compression is controlled, SOFTR AllService Fiber Glass Duct Wrap provides specified thermal performance. (See R-value table below.) Assured thermal performance controls operating costs due to reduction of heat loss or gain through duct walls. Helps control moisture condensation on the ductwork as well as on the outer vapor retarder jacket. This helps maintain insulation efficiency and reduces the likelihood of stained ceilings due to moisture damage. SOFTR All-Service Fiber Glass Duct Wrap is now reformulated to reduce dust and itch. Contributes to the delivery of conditioned air to occupied spaces at or near design temperatures. By conserving heating and cooling energy, HVAC systems may operate under reduced load. When installed correctly, complies with model energy codes and standards including ASHRAE 90.1 and 90.2. Architects, contractors, code officials and owners are assured of compliance and no-problem inspection. Easy to cut and fit to flat, curved and irregular duct surfaces for a neat, thermally effective insulation blanket. Because its easier to install than rigid boards, installation costs are lowered.

RECOMMENDED THICKNESS
Selection of insulation thickness and application of insulation are the responsibility of the engineer and contractor. Thickness also affects condensation as indicated on the Condensation Control chart. (See next page.)

APPLICATION RECOMMENDATIONS
Before applying SOFTR All-Service Fiber Glass Duct Wrap, ducts should be clean, dry and tightly sealed at all joints and seams. It should be cut to stretch-out dimensions and a 2" (50 mm) (approx.) piece of duct wrap removed from the facing at the end of the piece to form an overlapping staple and tape flap. (See illustration below.) Install duct wrap tightly butted with facing outside. Overlap the 2" (50 mm) formed tape flap and facing at other end of the piece of duct wrap. If ducts are rectangular or square, install so insulation is not excessively compressed at corners. Seams should be stapled 6" (150 mm) (approx.) on center with outward clinching staples. Adjacent sections of duct wrap should be tightly butted with the 2" (50 mm) tape flap overlapping. Where rectangular ducts are 24" (600 mm) in width or greater, duct wrap shall be additionally secured to the bottom of the duct with mechanical fasteners such as pins and speed clip washers or cuphead weld pins, spaced on 18" (425 mm) centers (maximum) to prevent sagging of insulation. Do not overly compress insulation. It is neither necessary nor desirable to adhere duct wrap to duct surfaces. Where a vapor retarder is required, seal all seams, joints, tears, punctures and any other penetrations of the duct wrap facing. These areas may be sealed with a pressure-sensitive vapor retarder tape matching the facing (either plain foil or FRK backing stock) or glass fabric and mastic. Cloth duct tape of any color and finish using reclaimed rubber adhesives is not recommended for use on SOFTR All-Service Fiber Glass Duct Wrap.

APPLICATION RECOMMENDATIONS
Types 701 and 702 are lightweight, unfaced, flexible insulations in batt form for use on vessels having irregular surfaces, where compressive strength is not a performance criterion. Types 703, 704 and 705 are board insulations usually impaled over welded pins on flat surfaces. Unfaced boards are normally finished with reinforced insulation cement or weather-proof mastic. ASJ-, FSK- or PSK-faced insulation boards shall be applied using mechanical fasteners such as weld pins or speed clips. Fasteners shall be located not less than 3" (75 mm) from each edge or corner of the board. Pin spacing along the equipment shall be no greater than 12" (300 mm) on center. Additional pins or clips may be required to hold the insulation tightly against the surface where cross breaking is used for stiffening. Weld pin lengths must be selected to ensure tight fit but avoid oil canning. In multiple layer applications, use faced material on outer layer only. Where a vapor retarder is required, cover pins and clips with vapor sealing, pressure-sensitive patches matching insulation facing. Rub hard with a plastic sealing tool to ensure a tight bond and a vapor seal. All insulation joints should be sealed with pressuresensitive joint sealing tape to match the insulation facing. Rub hard with a plastic sealing tool to effect a tight bond. Recommended practice suggests a 3" (76 mm) wide tape on flat surfaces or where edges are shiplapped and stapled. Use 5" (102 mm) wide tape in lieu of shiplapping. If insulation is being applied to sheet metal ductwork, all sheet metal joints must be sealed prior to insulating. Glass fabric and mastic may be used in lieu of pressure sensitive tape. May be installed in either single or multiple layers up to a maximum of 6" (152 mm) at temperatures not over 450F (232C).

FIBERGLAS TIW TYPES I & II INSULATIONS

DUCT & EQUIPMENT INSULATION SYSTEMS THERMAL INSULATING WOOL PRODUCT DATA

DESCRIPTION & USES

Off-white or light tan, noncombustible wool with resilient, inorganic glass fibers bonded with a thermosetting resin.TIW Type I is available in rolls; TIW Type II comes in batts. Fiberglas TIW Type I Insulation is used in applications up to 1000F (538C) at maximum recommended thickness requiring a lightweight insulation such as that used in panel systems, flexible wrap, industrial ovens or surfaces having irregularities. Its low compressive strength does not make it suitable for use as a base wool for metal mesh blankets. Fiberglas TIW Type II insulation is well suited for use in metal mesh blankets and boilers, vessels and many other types of industrial equipment operating at temperatures up to 1000F (538C) at maximum recommended thickness. It may also be used in panel systems for precipitators, ducts and breechings where more compressive resistance than Fiberglas TIW Type I Insulation is needed.

FEATURES & BENEFITS

TIWs excellent thermal performance helps contribute to lower fuel costs due to reduced heat loss. Being lightweight makes installation easy, even when large panels are being used. Theres no tendency for pinhole elongation under vibration situations, a frequent source of heat loss in heavier products. Large batts or blankets cover greater areas quickly, eliminating tedious block-by-block hand lay-up and drilling for studs in hard insulations. Can be used in direct contact with steel, copper and aluminum without corrosive effects.

APPLICATION RECOMMENDATIONS
Can be installed directly on heated flat and curved surfaces by attaching with welded pins or studs and finished with sheet metal or metal mesh and insulating cement, then canvassed and painted. Pins with speed washers or studs and nuts should be installed on 16" (400 mm) maximum spacing and not more than 4" (100 mm) from the edge of the insulation. The insulation is normally impaled over the pins or studs and the enclosing sheet metal or metal mesh secured to the same fasteners. Joints of the sheet metal finish are offset from joints of the insulation. For temperatures over 400F (102C), good insulation practice suggests double layer application, regardless of insulation type. Single layer installation of any type of insulation material requires good workmanship to minimize heat loss and hot spots at insulation joints. Fiberglas TIW Types I and II Insulations may be installed in either single or multiple layers at all temperatures up to 1000F (538C). Maximum allowable thicknesses at that temperature: TIW Type I, 812" (216 mm) TIW Type II, 6" (152 mm). Refer to drawings on page 22.

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Being lightweight makes SCR Board easy to handle and install, even when large size panels are used. There is no tendency for pin-hole elongation under vibration situations, a frequent source of heat leaks in some heavier products. SCR Board is free of shot and lighter than mineral wools, with comparable thermal performance. Boards in sizes up to 4 ft. x 8 ft. (1.2 m x 2.4 m) help to reduce the number of joints, speeding installation and eliminating potential sources of heat leakage. This feature helps improve installed costs. Insulation is easy to cut and may be used on flat surfaces or easily shaped around curved surfaces. The insulation is easily impaled over welded studs or pins, or may be held in place with wire ties, metal lath or lagging. SCR Insulation Boards thermal efficiency contributes to lower fuel costs due to reduced heat loss.

The surface burning characteristics of these products have been determined in accordance with UL 723, ASTM E 84, and CAN/ULC-S102. These standards should be used to measure and describe the properties of materials, products, or assemblies in response to heat and flame under controlled laboratory conditions and should not be used to describe or appraise the fire hazard or fire risk of materials, products or assemblies under actual fire conditions. However, the results of these tests may be used as elements of a fire risk assessment that takes into account all of the factors that are pertinent to an assessment of the fire hazard of a particular end use. Values are reported to the nearest 5 rating.

GENERAL APPLICATION DATA

ASTM STANDARDS FOR MINERAL FIBER

References to mineral fiber insulation in many widely accepted ASTM and Federal specifications are frequently assumed to equate to rock or slag wool only, and to exclude fibrous glass insulations. This is not the case. ASTM specifications define mineral fiber composition as follows: The fiber shall be of mineral substance such as rock, slag or glass processed from a molten state into fibrous form with an organic binder. Please refer to specific product sections for applicable specification compliance.

EFFECTS OF HIGH TEMPERATURE

All mineral fiber insulations comply with use temperature limitations of the specification as listed. Generally, these specifications require that the products shall not crack, warp, flame, smolder or glow during hot surface exposure, nor shall there be any evidence of fiber melting or degradation upon inspection after test exposure. Organic binders used in the manufacture of all insulations decompose to some extent at operating temperatures above 350F (177C). While this has no significant effect on thermal performance, compressive strength and resiliency will be degraded.

VAPOR RETARDERS
All insulations lose thermal efficiency when subjected to liquid water (although they recover when dried out). For satisfactory performance of the insulation system, properly installed vapor retarders are important in low-temperature applications, to prevent water vapor migration through the facing into the insulation from the warm to the cold side. Insulation thicknesses must be sufficient so that vapor retarder facings or coverings are not exposed to temperatures above their rated maximums. Refer to the heat loss versus surface temperature tables for specified product.
