Standard Membrane Systems

STANDARD MEMBRANE SYSTEMS

Designed, manufactured and assembled by Hyflux in Singapore, the Standard Membrane Systems integrate modular, scalable Kristal hollow fibre UF and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane units and components to deliver exceptional performance and value. Kristal UF membranes have a cross-flow and out-to-in configuration which make them ideal for pre-treatment for RO systems. The membranes produce consistent, high quality product water even in turbid feed water of variable quality such as seawater or various types of river water. This protects the RO membranes, optimises the systems operation and ensures a longer lifespan for the RO membranes. With lower energy use and maintenance costs, industries and communities can enjoy savings over the long-term. In addition, industries and communities can be assured of the quality of the membranes in delivering clean, safe drinking water. Kristal is the first UF membrane certified to remove the drinking water contaminants, cryptosporidium and giardia, under the NSF Public Drinking Water Equipment Performance Certification Programme. It has also achieved NSF/ ANSI Standard 61 (Drinking Water System Components Health Effects) Certification.

CASE STUDIES
SEAWATER DESALINATION FOR BOILER FEED WATER

Location: Zhejiang, China System Capacity: Approximately 22,200 m3/day Operational In: 2013

Background Zhejiang ranks as one of the top provinces in China in terms of economic progress and general prosperity. Much of the energy required to feed its booming industries comes from coal-fired thermal power plants that rely on seawater desalination technology to provide clean water for their boilers. One such power plant, located in the town of Wushashan requires a treated boiler feed water capacity of up to 22,200 m3/day. A desalination plant is being designed to meet this requirement by desalting water from the East China Sea. As boiler feed water has to have a high level of purity, various salts, silica and suspended particles in the seawater need to be removed.

CASE STUDIES
SEAWATER DESALINATION FOR INDUSTRIAL PROCESS APPLICATION

Location: Kalimantan, Indonesia System Capacity: 7,200 m3/day Operational In: 2013

Background A fertiliser factory located in the city of Bontang in East Kalimantan requires up to 7,200 m3/day of clean water to manufacture ammonia and urea. The factory needs a system capable of performing with long mean time between failures (MTBF) and supplying water of a high quality to generate steam for the manufacturing process. Given its close proximity to the sea, seawater desalination is a feasible option for a sustainable source of water.

Solution Hyflux was selected to design, install and commission the plant, which would include a two-pass RO system preceded by Hyfluxs proprietary Kristal UF membrane system to ensure a constant supply of consistent, high quality feed water. A total of 400 Kristal membranes, 784 SWRO elements and 252 BWRO elements were designed for the system. The product water from the desalination plant will go through a demineralisation system before being used to generate steam for the manufacturing process.

CASE STUDIES
SEAWATER DESALINATION FOR PALM OIL REFINERY

Location: Sumatra, Indonesia System Capacity: 2,400 m3/day Operational Since: 2010

Background A crude palm oil refinery situated in a rural part of Sumatra had been depending on deep well water or trucked surface water from other provinces to supply clean water to its refinery boilers. At times, it was a challenge to maintain a steady supply from these sources. The refinery needed a reliable supply of clean water to ensure operations would not be disrupted. As the facility was located near the coast, it hoped to tap on seawater desalination for a sustainable source of water to meet its needs. However, the turbidity of the seawater could fluctuate widely between 30 to 151 NTU because the sea was near a zone of peat swamps and had been badly polluted by poorly treated discharge from surrounding factories.

CASE STUDIES
SURFACE WATER TREATMENT FOR BOILER FEED WATER

Location: Shandong, China System Capacity: 200 m3/hour Operational Since: 2008

Background Boilers are used in thermal power plants to produce steam that drives the generation of electricity. To produce the steam, these boilers require water of a very high quality. Scaling and corrosion tend to be common issues faced by boilers, so the boiler feed water must not contain any minerals or non-volatile salts. One such thermal power plant, located in the town of Zhou Cheng in Shandong province, requires up to 200 m3/hour of treated water for its boilers. The source of the raw water is a reservoir nearby. As the quality of the reservoir water tends to fluctuate depending on various factors such as seasonal and weather changes, a robust water treatment system is needed.

The UF-RO system produces high quality product water that is further polished with an ion exchange mixed bed before being used as boiler feed.

Solution Hyflux was tasked to design, fabricate, install, commission, as well as operate and maintain the water treatment system for the boiler feed. 216 RO elements and 60 of Hyfluxs Kristal UF modules were used as the key technologies for the system. CASE STUDIES
RIVER WATER TREATMENT FOR TEXTILE PROCESS WATER

Location: Johor, Malaysia System Capacity: 14,400 m3/day Operational Since: 2006

Background Clean water is an extremely important raw material for the textile industry because large quantities are constantly needed in the manufacturing processes. The water quality requirements of some of these processes are stringent. In particular, water used for textile wet processing such as dyeing requires water that is relatively free from colour, hardness and solids both suspended and dissolved. An apparel factory in Malaysia that relied on a nearby river as a source of water for its manufacturing processes, had its intake point located downstream from other factories which discharged their treated wastewater into the river. As a result, the river water contained high levels of both organic and inorganic compounds that needed to be removed before it could be used in the factorys dyeing process as well as other applications such as steam generation.

RIVER WATER TREATMENT FOR TEXTILE PROCESS WATER

Solution Given the stringent water quality requirements, Hyflux designed, engineered, supplied, installed and commissioned a dual membrane filtration system with low pressure reverse osmosis (LPRO) as the key treatment technology. In addition, Hyfluxs proprietary Kristal UF membrane was chosen as the ideal pre-treatment to the LPRO. In total, 432 Kristal modules and 648 RO elements were used. Since 2006, the system has been producing up to 14,400 m3/day of consistently high quality water for the textile manufacturing applications, especially dyeing.

Membrane material, surface properties and make-up are crucial to any membranes performance. Hyfluxs Kristal membranes are made from carefully selected materials which are further enhanced by the modification of its surface properties to achieve high levels of hydrophilicity. The result is high flux rates, low fouling tendencies and enhanced chemical resistance. To cater to harsher operating conditions, Hyflux has developed a unique tri-bore membrane. This design not only delivers greater durability and strength that enable the membrane fibres to maintain their integrity, but also the same high level of permeate production as the single bore membrane.

THE KRISTAL ADVANTAGE: CONSISTENT, HIGH QUALITY PERMEATE

One of the key strengths of the Kristal membrane is its proven ability to produce high quality permeate regardless of fluctuations in feed water. The following graphs illustrate the permeate turbidity and silt density index (SDI) levels of a desalination plant using Kristal for RO pre-treatment over a years operation.
