Configuration and Operation

This chapter describes how to operate the HUC6801+D using card-edge controls or CCS-enabled software and hardware controls. The following topics are discussed in this chapter: Operating Notes on page 11 Changing Parameter Settings on page 12 Configuring Video Input Settings on page 14 Configuring Video Input Settings on page 14 Configuring Aspect Ratio Conversion on page 19 Configuring Audio on page 23

Operating Notes

When setting the control parameters on the HUC6801+D, observe the following: If you make changes to certain parameters, other related parameters may also be affected. When you change a parameter, the effect is immediate. However, the module requires up to 20 seconds to save the latest change. After 20 seconds, the new settings are saved and will be restored if the module loses power and must be restarted. For proper operation, the output HD standard frame rate should match or double the reference standard frame rate. The manufacturer recommends that you terminate any unused coaxial output connectors with a 75- connector.

Re-clocking SD-HD Signals

In a normal upconversion operation, the HUC6801+D module conform to all specifications set out in this manual. However, if you use re-lock output 1 (labeled RCLK SD/HD OUT 1) to re-lock an HD-SDI signal (which puts the module into Bypass mode), the Return Loss specification is typically 12 dB to 1.485 GHz.

Chapter 3 Configuration and Operation

Configuring Video Input Settings

The following section provides information about configuring the HUC6801+D video input settings including the following: Selecting Video Input and Output Standards on page 14 Selecting Video Input and Output Standards on page 14 Bypass Mode on page 16 Synchronization and Delay on page 17

Selecting Video Input and Output Standards

There are three options that you can use to select your modules video input standard: Auto, 525, or 625. The parameter option you select for your video input also affects the available options for your upconverted video output. Note: In the section below, the term frame rate compatible is used to describe frame rates that are the same or exactly double. Each Input Video Standard parameter option is described below: Auto With this option selected, the HUC6801+D automatically detects the video standard of incoming video. Only HD standards that are frame rate compatible with the detected input standard are available as Output Video Standard parameter options. If an HD video format is detected, the module is set to Bypass mode. 525 With this option selected, the HUC6801+D only accepts 525-based video inputs (29.97 fps standard) for upconversion. Only frame rate compatible HD standards are available as Output Video Standard parameter options. If a non-525-based standard is detected at the input, the video output is handled according to the Loss of Video Output parameter option. 625 With this option selected, the HUC6801+D only accepts 625-based video inputs (25 fps standards) for upconversion. Only frame rate compatible HD standards are available as Output Video Standard parameter options. If a non-625-based standard is detected at the input, the video is handled according to the Loss of Video Output parameter option. Note: If you select a non-frame rate compliant standard, the OSD will disappear. If this occurs, use the Factory Recall parameter and then regain use of the OSD. This will take several seconds.

Bypass Mode

When an HD-SDI signal is input to the HUC6801+D, the module detects that no upconversion processing on the input is required. Therefore, the module operates in Bypass mode, which means that the modules input signal bypasses the upconverter and is output to the program and monitoring outputs unprocessed. If On-Screen Display (OSD) monitoring is enabled, the OSD will be present in HD Prog/Mon Output 1 and HD Prog/Mon Output 2. For information about the OSD monitoring feature, see Enabling On-Screen Display on page 13. When the module is operating in Bypass mode, many parameters are disabled. Synchronization and Delay

Before upconversion, the SD-SDI input signal is processed by the modules frame synchronizer. The frame synchronizer automatically detects and locks to the genlock reference signal for video timing alignment. The frame synchronizer either drops or repeats video frames to achieve synchronization. During upconversion, delay is added to the SDI input signal in the main video processing path. The amount of delay to the primary signal is dependent upon the type of processing applied to it. To compensate for delays from external, upstream processes, you can use the Input Frame Delay parameter to add processing delay. The Input Frame Delay parameter provides a delay range between 0 to 6 frames in one-frame increments. Table 3-3 lists the video propagation delays through the video synchronizer and converter blocks of the HUC6801+. Audio Synchronization and Delay

Audio is synchronized to video by applying the same frame sync delay and converter delay to the audio associated with that video path. By changing the Input Frame Delay control, you can adjust the frame sync delay and trigger the audio to re-synchronize with the video. The audio synchronization will not occur immediately and will take roughly 10 seconds per frame of delay in order to prevent any audio glitch. You can add additional delay using the Audio Pair 1 Delay to Audio Pair 4 Delay parameters. For information about setting additional audio delay, see Setting Audio Pair Delay on page 26. The user delay is always applied in addition to the audio synchronization and will cause an audio glitch to occur when the user delay changes.

Configuring Input Reference Source and Input Frame Delay

To configure your input reference source and input frame delay, make the following selections: Setting Description Select the genlock source. (When the video input source is HD-SDI, this parameter defaults to Delay, because there is no external/ frame reference for the HD signal as it bypasses the processor.) Select the video standard of the genlock source. (The applicable 525 or 625 options are displayed in the OSD. If the standard is mismatched with the genlock source, the Reference LED will light.) Setting Motion Threshold Mode

You can use Motion Threshold mode to set how the HUC6801+ determines the difference between motion in the input video image and signal noise. When Motion Threshold is set to Auto, the module sets the threshold value to an optimal level. When set to Manual, you can use the Motion Threshold control to set the threshold value between 1 and 16, where 16 is used for images with high noise levels.

Creating a Custom Aspect Ratio

You can scale and pan the output image to any size and location by using the modules custom aspect ratio feature. You can use the ARC Scaling and ARC Offset controls to adjust the size and position of your custom ARC settings. Custom ARCs can then be saved as ARC Presets. You can save up to five ARC Presets. Descriptions of the controls are listed below. ARC H Scalesets the horizontal size of the output image anywhere between minimum and 200% of the output screen size. ARC V Scalesets the vertical size of the output image anywhere between minimum and 200% of the output screen size. ARC H Offsetplaces the horizontal center of the output image anywhere between -50% and 50% of the output screen size. ARC V Offsetplaces the vertical center of the output image anywhere between -50% to 50% of the output screen size. Table 3-4 lists the minimum ARC scaling values for each HD-SDI output video standard.

Recalling Standard and Custom ARC Presets

You can use the ARC Preset Recall parameter to recall and view standard and custom ARC preset settings without changing the output image. The ARC Preset Recall parameter will overwrite the following custom aspect ratio parameters: ARC H Scale, ARC V Scale, ARC H Offset, and ARC V Offset. If you perform an aspect ratio recall when ARC Preset Select is set to Custom, the output image aspect ratio will revert to the recalled aspect ratio. To recall a standard or custom ARC preset, make the following selections:

Overscan Mode

You can use Overscan mode to select and discard a specified number of lines and columns of pixels around the borders of the input image before upconversion. Enabling Overscan mode prevents embedded data in the active picture region, such as closed captioning, from being upconverted. The active picture region for 525 standard starts on line 21 and ends at line 262. Therefore, an overscan setting of 1 line implies that upconversion starts at line 22 and ends at line 261. In addition to the two discarded lines, the first and last pixel of each remaining line in the active picture region are discarded. Before setting Overscan mode, you can determine if closed captioning is present in the input video by viewing the Input CC Present feedback parameter. You can then select the lines of video you want Overscan mode to discard. To set up Overscan mode, make the following selections:

Communication and Control Troubleshooting Tips

Find the following troubleshooting information in this appendix: Software Communication Problems on page 45 Hardware Communication Problems on page 47

Software Communication Problems

The frame is powered up, but the module does not communicate with + Pilot Lite or CCS Pilot/Navigator. Solutions
Ensure you have specified the proper module slot. See your frame Installation and Operation Manual for more information about slot identification. Verify whether you need an ICE6800+ or 6800+ETH module installed in the frame (not required for FR6822+). FR6802+ frames only use ICE6800+ modules to communicate with CCS software and hardware. FR6802+QXF frames use ICE6800+ or 6800+ETH modules to communicate with CCS software and hardware. Remove any legacy 6800 series product that is in the frame. + Pilot Lite and CCS software cannot communicate with legacy 6800 series products, even though these modules may operate with card-edge controls in a newer frame. Legacy 6800 products do not have the + symbol on their extractor handles. Check for bent pins on the back module by following this procedure: a b c Unplug the front module. Unscrew and remove the back module. Inspect the 20- or 30-pin spring connector at the bottom of the back module (Figure A-1 on page 46), and verify that the connector does not have any slightly bent or pressed pins. Carefully reposition any bent pins; If this is not possible, contact Customer Support.

Appendix A Communication and Control Troubleshooting Tips

Figure A-1 Typical Back Module Spring Connector

The frame is powered up, but + Pilot Lite does not communicate with the module. Solutions
Ensure you have installed the correct cables between the PC and the frame: A null modem serial cable must be used between a PC and an FR6802+ frame (not a straight-through cable). At minimum, this requires that pins 2 and 3 are crossed, but pin 5 (ground) is straight-through to pin 5. A USB cable must be used between a PC and an FR6802+QXF frame. Verify whether you need an ICE6800+ or 6800+ETH module installed in the frame. + Pilot Lite control is disabled if an ICE6800+ or 6800+ETH control module is installed in a frame. Set the Frame ID DIP switch settings correctly (the Frame ID DIP switch is located at the rear of the frame.) If only one frame is connected, set the DIP switch to 00. If multiple frames are used in a daisy-chain, set the DIP switch numbers consecutively to the following: 00 (frame 1) 01 (frame 2) 10 (frame 3 11 (frame 4) See your frame Installation and Operation Manual for more information about frame ID switch settings. Check that the correct COM port is configured in + Pilot Lite and that another application is not using that COM port.

+ Pilot Lite and CCS software see the frame, but do not find all of the modules Solutions
Remove any legacy 6800 series products. Plug your modules in before starting the discovery. Start your discovery after the frame and all modules have fully powered up. Refresh + Pilot Lite (File > Refresh), and ensure that the installed modules are fully powered up first before discovery.

+ Pilot Lite and CCS Pilot/Navigator do not respond after they have been launched. Solution
Close either + Pilot Lite or CCS Pilot/Navigator. Both programs cannot be running at the same time on the same PC.

+ Pilot Lite and CCS software show a module in the control window, but cannot control it. Solution
1 2 3 4 Set the modules Local/Remote jumper to Remote. Ensure the module name in the Control window matches the module type in the frame. Gently push the module into its slot in the frame to ensure it is seated properly and powered up. Verify that the Control window indicates the device is ready.

Hardware Communication Problems

After a power failure, the frames and PC do not communicate. Solution
1 2 3 Wait four minutes for the frames to recover from the power failure. Close the + Pilot Lite or CCS software, and then restart the PC. Restart the software application.

Appendix A Communication and Control Troubleshooting Tips

The module does not seem to work. Solutions

Ensure the correct frame is powered up. Verify that all appropriate rear connections are secure. Gently push the module into its slot in the frame to ensure it is seated properly. Ensure the back module does not have bent pins by following this procedure: a b c d Unplug the front module. Unscrew and remove the back module. Inspect the spring connector at the bottom of the back module (Figure A-1), and verify the connector does not have any slightly bent or pressed pins. Carefully reposition any bent pins; if this is not possible, contact Customer Support.
