A Comparative Study of Professional and Social Adjustment of Teachers Working in GovernmentAided and Public Schools of Ambala District

A B S T R A C T
A teacher plays an important role in the whole system of education and teacher adjustment plays an important role in the teaching learning process. A well adjusted teacher is a source a boon to the society. A well adjusted teacher is one who is happy, free of all complexes and worries and efficient in his surroundings. Introduction: Teacher is of paramount importance in any system of education. No education system can be a success without the good teachers. The whole system of education revolves around the teacher. He leads the students from the darkness of ignorance to the lighted knowledge of understanding. To achieve the goals of education a teacher should be spiritual and intellectual father of his pupil. The role of teacher in achieving the goals of education is very challenging. The effectiveness of a teacher is considered to be associated with his personality and mental health. In order to perform his role effectively a teacher should be professionally and socially adjusted. Teacher adjustment plays an important role in the teaching learning process. Adjustment of teachers in all areas such as home, health, social, emotional and professional adjustment is very crucial. Statement of the Study: "A Comparative Study of Professional and Social Adjustment of Teachers Working in Government-Aided and Public Schools of Ambala District" Objectives: * To study the difference between teachers working in Government-Aided and Public Schools of Ambala District in relation to their professional and social adjustment. * To study the difference between male teachers working in Government-Aided and Public Schools of Ambala District in relation to their professional and social adjustment. * To study the difference between female teachers working in Government-Aided and Public Schools of Ambala District in relation to their professional and social adjustment. Hypotheses of the Study: * There is no significant difference between teachers

working in Government-Aided and Public Schools of Ambala in relation to their professional and social adjustment. * There is no significant difference between male teachers working in Government-Aided and Public Schools of Ambala in relation to their professional and social adjustment. * There is no significant difference between female teachers working in Government-Aided and Public Schools of Ambala in relation to their professional and social adjustment. Sample: The sample of 120 teachers working in GovernmentAided and Public Schools was selected randomly from the Ambala District. Tool Used: For the present study standardized Questionnaire "Mangal Teacher Adjustment Inventory (MTAI)" constructed and designed by S.K. Mangal was used for the purpose of data collection. Statistical Techniques Used: Mean, S.D., T-Test. Tables Showing the Findings: See Table 1 1. The table A clearly reveals that there is significant difference among teachers working in GovernmentAided and Public Schools of Ambala District in relation to their professional and social adjustment because the calculated 't' value i.e. 5.825 is more than the tabular value of 't' at both 0.05 and 0.01 level, so we reject the 1st null hypothesis (H0). 2. The table A clearly reveals that there is no signifi cant difference between male teachers working in Government-Aided and Public Schools of Ambala District in relation to their professional and social adjustment as the calculated 't' value i.e. 0.7594 is less than the tabular value of 't' at both 0.05 and 0.01

level of significance, so we accept the 2nd null hypothesis (H0). 3. The table A clearly reveals that there is significant difference between female teachers working in Gov ernment-Aided and Public Schools of Ambala Dis trict in relation to their professional and social ad justment because the calculated 't' value is 2.2351 which is greater than the tabular value of 't' at both 0.05 and 0.01 level of significance, so we accept the 3rd null hypothesis (H0). Findings of the Study: * According to the hypothesis, there is no significant difference between teachers working in GovernmentAided and Public Schools of Ambala District in relation to their professional and social adjustment; it was found that the data does not support the assumption. So, we reject the hypothesis (H0). It depicts that teachers working in both type of schools have different ideology. Teachers working in Government-Aided schools feel that there is lack of good infrastructure and lack of equipped science laboratory. Teachers working in public schools feel that some time behavior of the principal and man agement is not satisfactory. * According to the hypothesis, there is no significant difference between male teachers working in Government-Aided and Public Schools of Ambala District in relation to their professional and social adjustment; it was found that the data support the assumption. So, we accept the hypothesis (H0). It depicts that male teachers working

in Government-Aided and Public Schools have same ideology. The male teachers working in both types of schools have concern regarding the examination results. * In the light of hypothesis, there is no significant difference between female teachers working in Gov ernment-Aided and Public Schools of Ambala District in relation to their professional and social adjustment; it was found that the data does not support the assumption. So, we reject the hypothesis (H0). It depicts that female teachers working in both type of schools have different ideology. The female teachers working in Government-Aided schools feel that the curriculum is not according to the students needs. Female teachers working in the private schools are concerned with their future especially those working on temporary basis have the fear of retrenchment. Educational Implication: Present study has its implication for the teachers working in Government-Aided and Public Schools in relation to their professional and social adjustment. Finding of the study indicates that the teacher working in Government-Aided and Public Schools have different ideology on the basis of their professional and social adjustment. Only one who is well adjusted on his working place with his fellow beings can improve his efficiency to the better work. Suggestions for Further Study: * Similar study can be conducted on a large sample for better generalization *A study can also be conducted on Air Force schools and central schools teachers.
