Marl wins Saline mayoral race

headquarters at Mangiamo restaurant in Saline. I am very humbled that the voters elected me to serve as their next mayor. Law conceded the race to Marl after 9 p.m. Marl said their conversation was cordial. He wished me well, Marl said. In turn, I wished him well. I told him I admired his tenacity. Marl, 28, will take the helm of a City Council that struggled through a tough budget process, hired a new police chief and reorganized its treasurer and finance departments. The city faces several

Brian Marl will be Salines next mayor with a lopsided win over Glenn Law. According to unofficial results, Marl received 2,614 votes (60.01 percent) to Laws 1,711 (39.28 percent). The win caps Marls eightmonth campaign to succeed Mayor Gretchen Driskell. I am elated, quite frankly, Marl said at his victory

In an unexpected twist, Diane Friese and Karen Delhey, both of whom ran on separate and opposing slates, will be joining the Saline Board of Education. Delhey campaigned intandem with fellow candidate Paul Hynek while Friese partnered with Smita Nagpal. The Saline Board of Education race was the only one in Washtenaw County with candidates choosing to run on a slate. Saline Board of Education President Lisa Slawson and

Vice President Chuck Lesch opted to not run for re-election as their terms expired. The two seats are for six-year terms. Nagpal, who actively campaigned throughout the Saline community with Friese, said while the outcome is puzzling, the numbers are the numbers. I am disappointed that I did not win, but the voters have spoken and I respect that. I am glad that I had the opportunity to run, Nagpal said. Clearly, life has other plans for me than being on the Saline school board, but I will continue to work hard to serve the Saline school district and the families and children of the Saline community. Nagpal said she was thankful for the immense support of her friends and family and is happy for Frieses victory. She is truly an awesome person, and I have no doubt that she will be a strong voice of reason and collaboration on our school board, Nagpal said.

John Stanowski knew Tuesday was going to be a special day when the polls opened. It made my heart jump to see 300 cars at the Tri-County Sportsman League, he said about the polling station on Moon Road, where two of the townships three precincts vote. It did my heart good as an American. Stanowski defeated Deputy Clerk Joan Alexander, garnering nearly 61

percent of the vote for supervisor. He credited the support of his primary opponent, Chuck Tellas, with his win in November. Tellas called him the day after the primary and offered his full support. We consolidated our votes, Stanowski said. On the trustee front, newcomer Brian Iott collected the most votes with 1,664 (22.15 percent), followed by Jill Hargrove at 1,645 (21.9), Jane Kartje was third with 1,577 (20.99) and Dan Pichla 1,498 (19.94). Democrat Gary Zajac finished fifth with 1,122 (14.94), according to unofficial election results. I am happy my team. Brian and Dan won, Stanowski said. Weve got a good team and we have a good opportunity to work with the others.

Stanowski wants everyone to know that though people voted along party lines, now that the race is over, when people come to the township hall with a problem, they are York Township residents first. I represent all my neighbors in York Township, he said. Alexander could not be reached for comment. Iott, a newcomer to the board, was excited not only about winning, but gaining the top spot for votes and for Stanowskis win, as well. This is a great success for York Township, Iott said. Kartje was grateful to the voters for electing her to another term. She said was ready to continue her policy
