Coaching Model: SMART for Reinvention and Transition

The structure that guides me through the change/reinvention process is seen in my coaching model. The intention of my coaching model is to guide my clients through their recreation process in reaching their goal of their next new beginning, using the SMART model.

S R
Specific vision Stretch your creativity and imagination

M T
Measure Dont compare Stick by values Achieve Positive goals positive result

Realistic Not just a dream

Track Have deadlines Keep Motivation

S - Getting the client to be Specific about their vision and goals. New beginnings and self recreations are about finding out what it is that you truly love in order to take yourself to another level in your life. Letting the client journal and take the time to imagine what it would be like to use their creativity to begin to imagine what their ideal day, week, or even year, may look like. Having the client get as Specific as possible through journaling, mind mapping or creating a vision board. What do you see, hear or feel when you imagine your goal achieved? The more vivid the image the more powerful it will be. Can you easily explain it to someone else? As well as being specific, goals can be Stretching. Is your goal something that will get you further forward, but still provide an element of challenge? Look at the pros and cons, what will your life look like if you dont change anything? When clearly defined goal setting will help your client achieve success in their new capacity, whilst enabling them to succeed in other areas of their life such as having a good balance and having the freedom to pursue their creative aspirations. What is your dream? What would it be to live authentically? M - Coaching clients towards more fulfilling ways of Measuring success, rather than the typical societal measures of money, property, and prestige. Coaching the client towards developing a closer and more honest relationship with their inner selves, knowing their outer life will become more rewarding and successful. Stop making comparisons, and focus on what they DO have, and more on the skills, qualities and talents we all have within us. Reminding them that everything out there is but a mirror image of how we perceive ourselves. Coaching towards reinvention is a very creative process. What will achieving your goal get you? How well does it fit in with your values and whats important to you? Does it inspire you? Will it give you a sense of accomplishment or achievement? If not, then the chances of you achieving it are slim! A-Getting a balance between being stretching and motivational and at the same time being Achievable is key. Unobtainable goals will have a negative impact. But it is important that they are Actionable by the client, not dependent on others actions out of their control Acknowledge them, they have great skills, creativity is a process, not a

race. Action can be the smallest step forward. R-Ask, how Relevant are goals to you? Are they fitting into your big picture, and what you see as your next new position? Realistic goals fit in with all areas of your life. Though the client might find that they are in a place of transition that was not their doing, it is an opportunity to change perspective and look at it as a new beginning, not an end. A goal that is incompatible will mean inevitably that something will have to give. Just when the client has been working on finding time to tap into their creativity, it is important to look at balance in all areas. The process of reinvention needs to feel real, and grounded, not just a dream. Are you happy with your goals? As a minimum ensure they are written down. Better still, draw goals making them as vivid as possible. Have client share them with others, so that they can gain encouragement. Keeping your goals in front of them to be constantly reminded and keep focused; then review them every day. This process of reinvention needs to feel real, and grounded, not just like a dream. T-When wording your goals specify what you are moving Towards rather than what you want to avoid. You are moving towards recreation, reinvention and the new you. Your brain finds it difficult to process negatives, so by concentrating too much on what you want to avoid actually focuses the brain on this rather than what you want instead. Once again a shift in perspective towards a new beginning. Here reinvention can feel like a possibility. Finally, your goal must be Trackable. Have any deadlines been created? When looking for fulfillment after a change has occurred motivation is key, positive outcomes are motivating. We all know the results of leaving everything to the last minute, so having the client set some specific times when progress can be reviewed, by scheduling these into their journal.
