Aaron MacKinnon Ms.Ingram English 1102-025 October 18, 2012 Subject experts from IRT The viewpoint comes from people who are interested in educating policy makers and the public about genetically modified foods and crops. This group investigates and tells the effects on a plethora of problems. They also explore problems with current research reports and practices. Their viewpoint is that genetically modified food might be the reason why food allergies are on the rise. They believe since other genes have been placed in the DNA of soy, corn, cottonseed, and canola plants. These genetically modified foods carry a high risk of causing lifethreatening allergic reactions. They have found evidence that these genetically modified foods have caused a dramatically higher rise in allergy rates. The reason why new allergies are created is because when the new genes are intertwined with the old one is causes a new protein to form. By people trying to make the soybean a healthier substance they turned it to one that is more fatal. They did this by trying to mix a brazil nut with the soybean; however, due to the deadly effects this new strand of soybean was never sent into production.

This group believes that since genetically modified crops can change the DNA of the plant in significant amounts causing the original plants DNA to be mutated or turned off completely may cause an increasing level of an allergen. Science times This study is the first to map childrens food allergies geographically. They dedicate their time to the advancement of science and the useful scientific knowledge to everyone. They want to enlighten the public with scientific and practical knowledge so that they can live a better life. This group believes that theres not so much as a rise of allergies but a higher rate of allergies in urban areas. They believe that the greater population density is the cause for higher rates in the society. In urban areas 9.8% of children had food allergies while there is only 6.2% of children in rural areas with food allergies. The cities with the highest rate of food allergies are Nevada, Florida, Georgia, Alaska, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. The researchers arent quite sure why some allergies are more likely in cities; but they have also found a higher rate of asthma, eczema, allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis in cities. *This group wonders if the increase in processed food vs. locally grown foods has played a role in the rise of food allergies. College Students This view point comes from college students. This is a group of students who came together to try to understand why allergies are on the increase. This group has formed the Hygiene Hypothesis. Although they explore how hygiene might be causing the rise in allergies

they also observe other reasons why allergies might be on the rise. Some of their other thoughts are delayed introduction to foods and the form of food we eat. The students hypothesis is that excessive cleanliness can have an effect on the development of the immune system, which can cause an increase in allergies. They show that the body has two types of tendencies. TH1 is when the body is exposed to germs, dirt and certain types of infections are part of the natural development of our immune response from the TH2based system(from birth/default system) to TH1-based system (matured system). We can also see that a urban and clean life style can cause the TH2 system to continue to dominate. This group is stating that good hygiene and getting rid of parasitic infections may be fueling the epidemic of allergies. TH1 represents your immune system after it has matured. This is your immune system after it has been put through all the outside germs of everyday life. TH2 represents your immune system from birth.
