Vision Ziro valley retains the charm and its capacity to nurture its inhabitants as it has done for centuries while keeping up with the world in the path of development in a sustainable way. Mission The mission of NgunuZiro is to bring about sustainable development to Ziro valley by empowering the communities to participate in the processes that affect their lives and the lives of their children. Initiatives to empower the communities to shape their own futures and to preserve the rich cultural heritage of the local tribes and to maintain the pristine environment using traditional knowledge will be taken up. Description Ngunu Ziro is a community based organization registered with the Government of Arunachal Pradesh under the Societies Registration Act (SR/ITA/4966). It was constituted as a society in 2009 by the members of the Local Coordinating Committee (LCC) who have been working with Future Generations Arunachal (FGA) when later decided to shift base from Ziro. The main thematic areas of its works at present are community empowerment by building their capacities; environmental conservation by promoting healthy traditional practices and awareness activities for school children; livelihood initiatives for the villages people; and promotion of responsible tourism by encouraging involvement of local people in tourism activities. It works in partnership with the Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Farmers Clubs and Youth Clubs formed earlier under the aegis of FGA. This report summarizes the activities carried out by the society in the financial year 2011-12.

Activities

A group of twelve members were taken for exposure tour to Sikkim from April 17- 27, 2011 to study the operation of homestays there. The team visited three places to Sikkim Yuksam, Kewzing and Pastanga where the homestays are successfully run by the local communities. These places, located at different areas of the state and with different contexts, were selected with a view to

A nature trek to Talle Valley, the heart of the Talle Wildlife Sanctuary was organized by Ngunu Ziro on May Spring Trek 11 5 to 8, 2011 to create awareness on protection of wildlife and environment conservation. A group of nature lovers participated in the trek. The team gathered at Tilling Leba at Hong village on May 5, 2011 and trekked to Pange base camp via Moko on the first day. They then trekked to Talle Valley next day amidst virgin forest and colorful wild flowers. On the third and fourth days, the team camped at the Talle On the way to Talle Valley Valley and observed the Nwri Pwsa (Tsuga Pine), Palyu (Magpie) a beautiful bird seen only in the valley and Senyi Apu (Rhododendron). They also visited the abandoned helipad and rhododendron grove in the valley. On the fifth morning, they left Talle Valley for Ziro. The trek was a part of the strategy to create alternate livelihood sources for the local communities with a view to conserve the environment. A group of ex-hunters who participated in the wildlife survey of Future Generations Arunachal (FGA), are being promoted as nature guides.

A neuropsychiatry consultation camp, aimed to help people afflicted with alcohol and drug addiction, was Consultation Camp conducted at the Community Health Centre, Old Ziro on August 28, 2011. A total of 52 patients attended the camp and got counseling. The camp was conducted at the District Hospital, Ziro on August 29 and 30, 2011. The camp was conceived as a result of an online discussion about substance abuse menace in the society among the concerned citizens. Consultation was provided by neuropsychiatry consultant doctors from Woodland Hospital, Shillong and NEIGHRIMS, Shillong.

Ngunu Ziro has an ongoing project to of Interest document the sites with historical and cultural importance at Ziro with a view to promote them as places of tourist interest. Documentation works include photographing of such places, GPS mapping and collection of stories associated with these places.

Two model homestay units were stated at Siro Village, under the project Community based Eco-tourism by initiative of Future generation Arunachal (FGA), supported of Ashoka Promotion Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) and Ford Foundation. They are now emerging as the most favored lodgings for tourists visiting Ziro. These homestays are now used as the demonstration project for trainings on responsible tourism and homestay operations.

Ngunu Ziro has been exploring various areas and mapping their routes with a view to promote them as trekking Pepyu Cumyu routes. A two-day trek to Pepyu Chumyu, the mountain Trek peak to the north-west of Ziro valley was organized from January 14 to 15, 2012 by the members of Ngunu Ziro. The purpose of the trek

was to explore the potential of the areas to be developed as trekking route for tourists. The place is said to be one of the few areas where cobras are found all the year round. Located at an altitude of 7200 ft. above sea level, it is an excellent view point from where one can have a birds eye view of the whole Ziro valley.

Plastic Waste
The training was in preparation of Ngunu Ziros plan to campaign for introduction of zerowaste management campaign at Ziro to address the garbage menace in the town.

A two-day training was organized on January 21 and 22, 2012 for the members of womens groups on local reuse and recycling of the polythene bags and papers. The women learnt and made many items from used polythene bags and papers during the training period.

It was adjudged the best exhibition and a cash award of Rs. 3000/- was given by the Honble Parliamentary Secretary Land management cum local MLA.

survey on solid waste situation in the Ziro township was conducted from February 2 to 11, 2012. This was the first survey of its kind in the town. The aim was to generate data on solid waste with which to advocate for a sustainable way to manage garbage menace in the town.

Ngunu Ziro, in collaboration with the District Administration and Department of Urban Development Agency organized a two days workshop on solid waste management for Ziro-Hapoli Township on February 25 and 26, 2012. All the stakeholders like representatives from

the Ziro and Hapoli Bazaar Committees, various colonies, Ziro Chambers of

Commerce, tour operators and all the government departments participated in the workshop. The outcome of the workshop was to introduce the concept of zero waste management in the town. As first step, it was decided to ban use of plastic bags in the area.

Trainings/Workshops Attended

Regional Workshop on Zero Waste Himalayas: Shri Punyo Chada and Shri Roto Chobin represented Ngunu Himalayas Ziro in a two days workshop on Regional Workshop towards Zero Waste Himalayas at Gangtok, Sikkim from May 17 and 18, 2011 organized by the Rural Management & Development Department, Goverment of Sikkim in associated with Kanchenjunga Conservation Zero Waste Committee Participants in the Workshop (KCC), Sikkim. The workshop was attended by all the eastern Himalayan states, neighboring countries and representatives from WWF, ATREE and government agencies of Government of Sikkim. The main objective of the workshop was to find ways to manage and minimize waste products in all the Himalayan states and make the Himalayas waste free. The participants adopted a one-point agenda to work on zero waste to save the Himalayas for the future generations.

Biogas Seminar: Dr. Tage Kanno of Ngunu Ziro represented the Lower Subansiri District Administration Seminar in a skill sharing seminar on biogas entitled BIOGAS The Next Steps organized by Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) and Stree Mukti Sanghatana in the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai on March 17 & 18, 2012. Workshop on Bird watching: Dr. Tage Kanno, Hibu Tatu and Punyo Chada participated in the one-day Watching workshop on bird watching which was organized on Worrkshop March 9, 2012 at Conference Hall, Hapoli by District Administration and Department of Tourism, Government of Arunachal Pradesh. The workshop participants included the Lower Subansiri District Deputy Commissioner, Heads of Departments, a team of officers from Assam led by Lakhimpur District Deputy Commissioner Dr. Anwaruddin Chowdhury, and local NGOs like Ngunu Ziro, Hong BMC, Arunachal Birding Club, Homestay operators and Hoteliers. The main objectives of the workshop were to highlight the importance of preservation of birds in the Ziro valley in particular and the state as a whole and to promote bird watching as a tourist activity in the state. Team from Samukta, Mumbai comprising of Smita Krishnan, Daniel Sequeira and Stepen Salazal visited Ngunu Ziro May 27 Slow Loris to June 1, 2011. They collected data on slow loris in the area. On May 27, 2011 the participated in a class on sanitation for the student of Government Middle School, Hong. The students and the team members carried out cleaning drive around the school area, picking up plastic waste. On June 1,2011, a nocturnal faunal survey was conducted at Siikhebo, Hong.

Thom as Sam uel M , Programme Coordinator, CEPF Small Grants Programme, ATREE with his wife Anamika Subba visited Ngunu Ziro from October 2 to 6, 2011. Navraj Pradhan, Researcher, International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development ( ICIMOD), Kathmandu, Nepal, visited from November 2 to 4, 2011. His purpose is to see the water management system in Ziro valley. Ngunu Ziro facilitated his visits to the villages to see the traditional as well as the modern irrigation systems in the valley. Nicky Bassford of Future Generation, USA, office visited Ngunu Ziro from March 26 to 31, 2012. She met with the women group, LCC members and Farmers Club members and discussed about the various activities and programs. The basic objectives of her visit was to prepared a report about the activities and programs undertaken by Ngunu Ziro and the changes seen during and after Future Generation Arunachal (FGA) withdrew its projects from Ziro. Oken Tayeng of Abor Country Tours & Travels along with his friends Katu Bage and Duri Taipodia visited the homestays affiliated with Ngunu Ziro in the last week of March 2012. He agreed to include the programs of Ngunu Ziro in his tour packets and to make use of homestays for his clients.
