Pipes Below Hallways in Senior Center Lined Without Displacement

A camera inspection revealed voids in the the aged sanitary drain system. The property managers of Rogers Street wanted to repair the pipes, but did not want the construction and inconvenience that normally coincide with it. The property managers chose Nu Drain as the long-term fix for their failing drain pipes, thereby preventing major destruction to the building and disruption to the residents. Project: Rehabilitate the drain lines that are located beneath an assisted living centers hallways without displacing the elderly residents. Customer: Peterborough Housing Corporation, a Peterborough non-profit housing corporation and one of the largest residential real estate owners in the Ontario city. Site: Rogers Street maintains 90 rent-geared-to-income living units for seniors. This two-story building, located in Peterborough, Ontario, was built in 1972. System: About 400 feet of cast iron sanitary drain lines with 3", 4" and 6" diameters. This 30-year-old pipe system is located beneath the senior homes hallways, below 2.5 feet to 4 feet of concrete. Problem: After the drain system consistently experienced backups, a camera inspection showed voids in the pipes and separations at the joints. The customer understood the importance of repairing these failing drain lines, but did not want to have to dig up the hallways of the senior homes. Circumvention: A traditional repipe would necessitate the excavation of the hallways to the residents units. The floor and several feet of concrete would be ripped apart, which would cause major disruption to the elderly residents because they would most likely be displaced during the work. After the pipes were replaced, concrete would be poured and then flooring would be installed. A repipe would not only be inconvenient and disruptive, but very time-consuming and expensive.

This was a new technology for us and we were very happy that it could work in this application. After a thorough analysis of our piping condition, Im not sure how else we could have repaired this problem as effectively for the same cost.
- Peter Robinson, Project Manager, Peterborough Housing Corporation
