Mann retires after 28 years

By Nathaniel Siddall
Special Writer

For the first time since 1988, Manchester Township will see a new face heading up governmental decisions. After 24 years as Manchester Township Supervisor, Ronn Mann is retiring. I enjoy working with people, I love the community said Mann. A tribute party for Mann was held on Nov. 11, at the township hall, attended by many people who have worked with him over the years, as well as the man who will replace him, Gene DeRossett. DeRossett ran unopposed for the office in the recent election. Ill still be around, Ill still help, if anyone needs anything, Mann said. While speaking of Manns legacy, DeRossett said: He has been fiscally responsible with your tax dollars and my tax dollars. Manchester Township has one of the lower millage rates in the area, and carries no debt. Financially were in very good shape, Mann said. Another of Manns noteworthy accomplishments was the development of Dutch Drive. The property was acquired by the township and initially used as an access road for

gravel haulers. Can you imagine what it would have been like if we had not had Dutch Drive as a bypass during all of this road construction? DeRossett said. Mann was born in Manchester, and his family owned the Manchester Mill, which operated for many years as a feed mill serving local farmers. Following in his fathers footsteps, Mann joined the fire department in 1966, and then served on the planning commission and the school board. In 1988 Mann agreed, after several requests from the township supervisor serving at the time, to consider taking the position. At the next meeting he resigned right off the bat, and I was appointed, Mann recollected. He has run for re-election six times since then. Alicia Ping, a Washtenaw County Commissioner, presented Mann with a proclamation from the county honoring his service. She recounted how he had helped in many ways to make her job easier, when she was getting started. Gene DeRossett read a tribute prepared for Mann by the state senate majority leader. Reflecting on the future, Mann

People need to get involved in their government. Manns own children are active in the community, with son Tom involved with service clubs, and Jeff carrying on the family tradition working for the fire department.

Manchester CRC volunteers honored for their dedication to their community at CCH The Manchester Community Resource Center held its 25th annual banquet at Chelsea Community Hospital Nov. 9, during which several key volunteers were honored with awards for their service to the community. The CRC, located in the east wing of the old Ackerson School at 410 City Rd. in Manchester, was founded in the 1980s by concerned village residents who wanted to come to the aid of those families adversely affected by a major manufacturing downturn during that decade. Since its founding, the CRC has mobilized community members like David Little, recipient of the Clair Reck Volunteer
