Cortney Marschuetz Portfolio Mary Jo Keever BACKGROUND INFORMATION Malya Thompson is a 1st grader at Greenwood Elementary.

Malya is a shy girl at rst but once she is comfortable around you she has a little spunk to her personality. She is always ready to learn and rarely is off task. She wants to be there and her mother even told me that Malya told her Tuesday is her favorite day of the week because its the day she gets to see Cortney and do reading tutoring. She has a positive attitude towards reading. Malya has good comprehension and understands the text when being read to her. She also is good at self-monitoring while she reads. If she messes up a word she does not keep reading she wants to makes sure she gets it by using whatever text clues she needs to. Malya has struggles with uency and prosody. Her reading sounds choppy and she does not use much expression or volume while reading. She needs work on uency specically blending and decoding and reading with expression and good volume. Scores and Assesments Running Records: Week 1: Text: Because a Little Bug Went Ka-Choo! ! ! Score: Error Ratio: 1:3.41 Accuracy: 71%

Malya stopped reading this book early because she was highly frustrated as her score reects. It was a book she chose to read but once started was too difcult for her and caused her great frustration. Week 4: Text: The Wiggly Tooth ! ! ! Score: Error Ratio: 1:4.5 Accuracy: 78% Self- Correction Ratio: 1:8.5

Malya has shown a little improvement but this Level E text still proves to be at a frustration level for her. Week 6: Text: Boom Chicka Rock ! Score: Error Ratio: 1:4.5

Accuracy: 78%

Malya achieved the same score has the week previous on a book at the same level. Week 7: Text: Malyas reading recovery book. Total Words 152 Accuracy: 82% Malya did much better on this book I think because she was familiar with it due to reading recovery a great program that she attends at her school. Burke Reading Interview ! I conducted a Burke Reading Interview with Malya in the beginning of our sessions together. This assessment tells me how Malya approaches a text and what she does to help her self when she occurs problem within the text. I have included Malyas interview in the assessment part of the portfolio. After conducting this interview it was apparent to me I had a lot of work to do with Malya on self- monitoring in the text. Her responses seemed forced and robotic I want her to be a natural at getting through the text. Heres How I feel About Reading ! I conducted this survey with Malya in the beginning to middle of our sessions to see how her attitude towards reading was doing. It was clear that Malya needed work on stamina as in response to the worst thing about reading she said , long stories. Attitude Survey ! This was conducted in the beginning to see how Malya felt about reading. RATIONALE ! I started all of Malyas lessons off with word work because as I have said before she needed work on her sight words, blending and decoding. Then I would have her do a read aloud with a book of her choice. She would read and then I would give her two compliments and one thing to work on. The next week we would discuss what she did good and what to work on and try to apply it to her reading. Each week we would increase her text size to build up her overall stamina. I also always did a comprehension focus with modeling and gradual release of responsibility because the best way for Malya to see how comprehension works is for me to model it. At the end we would do a free read or sometimes a computer game. The overall goal was to get word work in and a strategy lesson. Towards the end of our lessons I noticed Malyas blending was improving greatly and she was starting to get her mouth ready for words she did not know without me telling her.

FINAL REFLECTION ON STUDENT PROGRESS ! Malya started off the semester barely being able to compute level 1, sight words. Her running record on a level E book was a 71 % and she had little condence in reading aloud. By the end of our tutoring Malya would ask me if she could read more than one book aloud and she would change her voice for the different characters in the text. Which showed a great improvement in her prosody. Also, in the beginning of the semester she had no idea what a character was in the story and now she talks about her favorite character and why she likes them. She also has grown with her stamina of reading and with her ability to use different strategies to comprehend and she is able to talk about the story in a more mature level with me. For example last week we were doing a lesson on character development but while we were reading she told me she had a text to self-connection and that was a strategy we had worked on the week before. I notice Malya gaining condence in reading and in her overall attitude. Seeing Malya grow over this year has been such a rewarding experience and I know she will continue to work hard and be the best reader in her grade . FINAL REFLECTION ON TEACHING ! I have grown so much as a teacher throughout this semester. I talked about how I have seen Malyas condence grow but I too have gained condence in my ability to teach a child to read. I started off the year scared and not sure of what to do and as I tweaked and changed my lessons with help from my professors I started to learn how to make lessons weekly to t Malyas needs. Once I would see a lesson work it would be encouragement to continue tweaking and reection on how I could improve to help her improve. Seeing her improve in her reading abilities and knowing that I was doing something right was one of the most encouraging feelings. Those moments when she would say a word while reading and I would just drop my mouth knowing that weeks before she would not have even attempted it. I started off this year thinking that I was not sure if I would be able to teach this girl who knew little about reading to read and now I can see her improve and I know that things we work on are actually sinking in with her and helping her in her overall reading ability and her condence towards reading. Malya has grown so much as a reader and I am so proud of her. She is always ready to learn and always wanting to listen. I am so proud of her and I have no doubt she will continue to improve in reading and eventually be one of the best readers in her grade.
