Ottawa Countys Salvation Army
programs offer opportunities to vol-
unteer time and resources this holi-
day season. Ways that an individual
or organization can help include:
The Red Kettle Campaign. The
Salvation Army Port Clinton Service
Unit, serving Ottawa County, needs
bell ringers for their 19
th
Annual Red
Kettle Campaign. Ringing the Bell
for two hours is the equivalent of
donating over $101 to The Salvation
Army. There are seven locations in
Ottawa County: Millers Market in
Genoa, Community Market in Oak
Harbor, Community Market in Port
Clinton, Krogers and WalMart and
Bassetts in Port Clinton, starting
November 19
th
through Christmas
Eve. 700 Volunteers are needed to
meet the goal of $62,000. Last year
over $60,000 was raised, and there
are many more openings for bell-
ringers this year. All monies raised
by the Red Kettle Campaign go back
into the community assisting with
rent, mortgage evictions, utility dis-
connects, fuel and medications.
There are many challenges in
place this year. Port Clinton High
School is challenging Oak Harbor
High School. There is a Battle of the
Badges competition that includes
the Port Clinton Police Department,
Fire Departments, Sheriff s Depart-
ment, the US Coast Guard station
and possible Sandusky Bay Station
of the Border Control. There is also
a Mayors Challenge.
The Coats for Families Program
is currently under way at The Salva-
tion Army Port Clinton Service Unit.
Last year 1,032 coats were donated,
cleaned by Executive Cleaners then
re-distributed to those in need of a
warm, winter coat. There is a des-
perate need of childrens coats this
year. Executive Cleaners is offering
10% off of your cleaning order if
you drop off a coat for The Salvation
Army.
The HolidayBureau The Salvation
Army Port Clinton Service Unit is
now accepting Holiday Bureau ap-
plications for Christmas assistance
with food and toys. An application
can be picked up and returned at
Suite #800 at The Sutton Center in
Port Clinton.

th
Annual Tree-A-Rama Charity
Auction will be held on Sunday, Dec.
2, at The Historic Mon Ami Restau-
rant and Winery. The Silent Auction
starts at 2 p.m. with the Live Auc-
tion following at 4 p.m. To donate a
Christmas tree, wreath, gift certif-
cate or package item, contact Mau-
reen (contact information below).
Items that will be auctioned include
a Cleveland Cavaliers autographed
basketball, Cleveland Indians tickets,
a Cleveland Browns autographed
football, Mud Hens tickets, Holly-
wood Casino tickets, a handmade
sled, cradles, books from Ida Rupp
Library, spa packages, a portable gas
grill for a boat and much more. Last
year this event raised over $14,000
with all the proceeds going to the
Salvation Army Toy Program. Since
donations are down this year, there

and businesses large and small wear the shirt and
donate to United Way. What is pledged in Ottawa
County stays in Ottawa County. This years goal is
$326,000 to sustain programs funded by United
Way and ensure stability in our communities. In
United Ways Campaign to recruit readers, more
than 50 people have raised their hands to volun-
teer for the three-year community-wide campaign
to recruit 100 readers and tutors.

Ten years ago this week, big
parts of Port Clinton were clean-
ing up after a major tornado
struck. The hardest hit areas were
on Port Clintons southwest cor-
ner south of the High School, the
area just south of Lakeview Park
and the condominiums along the
lakeshore. A number of homes
on Catawba Island were de-
stroyed as well. We all remember
what a great job Salvation Army
and the Red Cross did in help-
ing with the cleanup and assist-
ing those who lost their homes.
Parts of Magruder Hospital were
hit as well as the tornado made a
devastating path from just south
of Port Clinton High School,
traveling northeast to the Lake,
taking out a number of the con-
dos across from the Port Clinton
Plaza. Miraculously, nobody was
seriously hurt.

Speaking of Salvation Army,
I had the good fortune to at-
tend the 2012 Red Kettle Kickoff
breakfast at Catawba Island Club
last week. Last year the volunteer
bell ringers raised over $60,000
for Salvation Army. Their 2012
Goal is $62,000. So next time you
go shopping, or every time you
go shopping this holiday season,
be sure to put some jingle into
the Red Kettle.

watch young Jacob Tetzloff grow
up. He is the son of Glen Tetzloff,
our bass player in The Travelin
Lounge Lizards band, and he re-
cently achieved Eagle Scout. His
project was to improve an area
used to educate youngsters at
the Back to the Wild wildlife
rehabilitation and nature educa-
tion center in Castalia. He had to
replace rotting railroad ties in a
seating area with concrete pavers.
Jacob is 17 and a senior at Marga-
retta High School. He has earned
33 merit badges and is also a mu-
sician (imagine that). He is pic-
tured here with Mona Rutger, the
owner of Back to the Wild.

On Saturday evening Wee Willys in
Marblehead was packed and lively. The
community came together to honor their
mayor, Jackie Bird, her late brother Tom
Bird and to raise funds for CASA (Court
Appointed Special Advocates). Mayor Bird
will be competing in CASAs Dancing with
the Stars event on Nov. 17 at Camp Perry.
Over $1500 has been raised for Mayor Bird
and CASA through the event and donations
so far, and more is to be tallied, according to
Norm Welser and Willy Steinbrick of Wee
Willys.
Rosalyn Barnhill, CASA volunteer, spoke
to the gathered contributors of the work of
CASA, and of her own experiences. Barnhill
works with three families, and said that at
times she needs to read the body language
of the youngest children who cant yet speak
to make sure the child is in a safe place.
Mayor Bird thanked everyone for coming
out and said, This is truly overwhelming.
It is for a very important cause. I hope to
bring the trophy back to Marblehead.
Bird said that when she was frst asked to
participate in the CASA event, she was hesi-
tant, but her brother Tom encouraged and
supported her and picked out the song she
is dancing to on Saturday. Tom died sud-
denly on Oct. 21. He had planned a surprise
birthday party for Jackie at Wee Willys.
Though it was diffcult, Jackie decided to
go forward with the competition and turn
the birthday party into a CASA fundraising
event.
Willy and Norm did it all, said Bird, of
the arrangements for Saturday evenings
event. Thanks to them and to my family
and everyone for the support for me and
for a wonderful cause.

Thanks to voters
As we transition away from the hectic
campaign season to the holiday season, I
want to thank the voters of Ottawa Coun-
ty for their support of my candidacy for
state representative. I have never and will
never take that support for granted and
look forward to continuing my public
service for our great area.
Last week my friend John Schaffner
wrote a column reminding all of us of
the importance of voting. John shares my
deep belief that we should never take our
vote for granted and must always actively
participate in the electoral process. I do
have a disagreement with Johns position
that voting is not a right but a privilege.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Voting is a right, guaranteed by the Con-
stitution and protected by the Voting
Rights Act. Convincing would be voters
to cast their support one way or another
is a privilege I and other candidates have.
And I appreciate that privilege.

Ida Rupp Public Library will show The
Dust Bowl: a flm by Ken Burns in two
parts on Dec. 6 and 7 from 10 a.m. 12
p.m. The Dust Bowl, a four-hour docu-
mentary, chronicles the environmental ca-
tastrophe that, throughout the 1930s, de-
stroyed the farmlands of the Great Plains,
turned prairies into deserts, and unleashed
a pattern of massive, deadly dust storms
that for many seemed to herald the end of
the world.
It was the worst man-made ecological
disaster in American history. The docu-
mentary includes vivid interviews with
twenty-six survivors of those hard times
combined with dramatic photographs and
seldom seen movie footage, to bring to life
stories of incredible human suffering and
equally incredible human perseverance. It
is also a morality tale about our relation-
ship to the land that sustains us.
This program is free of charge. Call 419-

Harold Dann was one of those individu-
als from The Greatest Generation who
did what he had to do when duty called.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army after gradu-
ating from high school in 1943 and as a
teenager spent 200 days in combat in the
European Theater of Operations.
Corporal Dann was a member of the
104th Infantry Division also known as the
Terry Allen Timberwolves and arrived in
Europe in late 1944. Like many, he thought
it was going to be a short stay thanks to
the Allies success since D-Day on June 6,
1944. It was November and Germany was
the next stop. That was before the mas-
sive German counterattack known as the
Battle of the Bulge. The 104th was the frst
American Unit to be specifcally trained
for nighttime combat. He fought in the
Hurtgen Forest and his unit was evacuated
from Malmedy one day before the Ger-
mans slaughtered 84 American GI prison-
ers of war.
A lot of what Hal Dann went through is
a little blurry these days, but one memory
lasts. Members of his unit drew straws to
see who would go see the Marlene Dietrich
USO Show not far from the front lines. His
picture appeared in Life Magazine while
he was watching that show.
All members of the Timberwolves
were eligible for the Bronze Star for valor.
Somehow, in the confusion that followed
the war in Europe, Hal Dann got missed.
Late in 2008, the Ottawa County Veter-
ans Service Offce set out to identify lo-
cal military personnel who had inadver-
tently been missed after the war was over
in Europe and were sent back home. On
Tuesday afternoon, in a ceremony at Edge-
wood Manor, that situation was rectifed.
67 years after spending 200 consecutive
days in a combat zone, surviving mortar
fre, artillery fre and fre fghts in frigid
Belgium in late 1944 and early 1945, Hal
Dann was fnally awarded his Bronze Star.
It was awarded by Lt. Col. Barbara Her-
rington Clemens in a special Veterans Day
ceremony at Edgewood Manor.
Others receiving recognition on Tuesday
were Bernie Huebner, Lowell S. Petersen,
David Tong, Paul Krofft, all veterans of
World War II.
Edgewood resident awarded
Bronze Star 67 years late

American Bank was changed to the American Bank in 1918 because of anti-German
sentiment.

The BCS Board of Education ap-
proved a 5-year fnancial forecast on
Tuesday, October 23
rd
that puts forth
an end to the defcit spending that
has plagued the district for the past
4 years. The task to reduce spending
for the district involved staff reduc-
tions, building closures, pay freezes
and changes to beneft packages to
combat reductions in state funding
and declining enrollment.
Mr. Tim Coffman, BCS treasurer
said, While defcit spending has
been alleviated in the short term, it
goes without saying that uncertainty
in state funding and property values
remain one of the most diffcult areas
of school revenue for which to plan.
Board member Mr. Steve Rhodes
commented, Balancing our bud-
get has been a long, diffcult and, at
times, unpopular process. After years
of uncontrolled spending and deple-
tion of budget reserves, the current
Board of Education was faced with
a fnancial crisis. Drastic reductions
were required in order to regain f-
nancial control of the district.
Board President Jeff Dornbusch
said working towards a balanced
budget (current expenses do not ex-
ceed current revenues) was one of
the board of education goals begin-
ning in January of this year. We are
pleased we have accomplished this
initial goal.
Superintendent Dr. Guy Parmigian
commented, B-C-S School District
is committed to offering a world-
class education while living within
its means. Our overall educational
program must remain lean, while
continuing to be a beacon of educa-
tional excellence within our region.
To do this, we must be innovative
and proactive in meeting the needs of
the students we serve. I look forward
to working collaboratively with our
district citizens, our Treasurer, and
Board of Education to ensure fscal
responsibility in spending taxpayer
dollars.

A painting by Rick Dziak of Marblehead titled No Swimming was chosen for use on
the cover of a newly released novel by Linda Lehmann Masek. The book is titles The
Serpent Sea, and was published by Fireside Publications II of Summerfeld, FL.
Ms. Masek saw a photo of the painting on the Dziak Gallery website and sought use of
the image through the Gallery. The image was cropped and adjusted to ft the needs of
the cover, and Mr. Dziak was given credit for the work in the book. In the Acknowledge-
ments, Ms. Masek states,
I am so very grateful to
Rick Dziak, OPA, of Dziak
Gallery in Marblehead,
Ohio, for allowing the use
of an image of his paint-
ing No Swimming, to be
used on the cover of this
book. It would have been
nearly impossible to fnd
a picture to more accu-
rately depict the setting of
The Serpent Sea than this
scene. Thank you, Rick!
The painting shows a
small beach with drift-
wood and a building in the
background which leads to
a dock or a wharf. In actual-
ity, the building is the pavil-
ion at the dock in Lakeside.
The setting for the novel is
in Key West, but works with
the descriptions of the area
where most of the action
takes place.
Linda Lehman Masek is
a teacher-librarian with
advanced degrees from
Cleveland State and Case
Western Reserve universi-
ties. Her diverse writing
talents are shown in the dif-
fering genres of her previ-
ous books. She has penned
more than 100 newspaper
and journal articles, is an
accomplished artist, pia-
nist and photographer. Her
varied interests also include
providing tutorial services
to students with disabilities,
helping to fnd homes for
rescued animals and bicy-
cling.
Books by Linda Lehmann
Masek include: Mag-ni-f-
cat, a childrens cat book;
The Poison Tree, a his-
torical mystery novel; and
Soul Dance, a romantic
suspense novel.
Dziak Gallery has a limit-
ed number of autographed
copies of No Swimming
at 810 W. Main Street in
Marblehead. A tentative
book signing is scheduled
for spring at the gallery. The
gallery is usually open Sat-
urdays and Sundays from
1 to 4 p.m. or by appoint-
ment. Contact Rick or Mary
Dziak at 419-798-4994,

The Chambers of Commerce Bright
Stars for 2012 were recognized on Thurs-
day, Oct. 25, at the Great Lakes Science
Center in Cleveland.
Over 50 chambers of commerce across
northern Ohio nominated a person from
their chamber as their Bright Star, to rec-
ognize a chamber member who has made
a signifcant impact on the chamber
through membership, retention, sponsor-
ship, economic development, operations
and/or education. Each Bright Star is an
active chamber member for no less than
two years and is likely to be an unsung
hero or a dedicated behind-the-scenes vol-
unteer.
Judi Halstead with Integrity Productions
is the Port Clinton Area Chamber of Com-
merces Bright Star 2012. Halstead accept-
ed her certifcate and trophy from Tony
Gallo, NOACC Chairman and Director of
Business Development for Lorain County
Chamber, at the presentation.
When you think Bright Star, the PC
Chamber immediately thinks of Judi Hal-
stead. She exemplifes integrity in all as-
pects of her life including her willingness
to proactively promote membership, to
support Chamber programs, and to give
110% by volunteering with every event
and activity. Her positive attitude is con-
tagious! stated Laura Schlachter, Presi-
dent of the Port Clinton Area Chamber of
Commerce.

Port Clinton High School Senior Jonathan Brown has
been named frst team All Ohio Division II for the highly
successful PCHS 2012 soccer team. Brown was a midfeld-
er and holds many school records for the Redskins. He
was also District 1st team and was named the Districts
Most Valuable Player. Brown was also a unanimous choice
on the All Sandusky Bay Conference squad and the unani-
mous choice as the SBCs Player of the Year.
Brown was the leader on the PCHS Soccer Team that
went 18-2 on the season and won the Sandusky Bay Con-
ference title, fnishing 10th in the State polls for Division
II. He broke numerous season and career goal and scor-
ing records. For his career, he tallied 87 goals, 45 of which
came this year, the highest individual number of goals
scored in Ohio. His 45 goals this year is also a school re-
cord.
Brown was also generous to his teammates with 35 ca-
reer assists. He holds the PCHS record for career points
with 209 and points in a season with 105. For Jonathan
Brown, soccer was a full time obsession, as he played on
several club teams as well. In addition, he is an excellent
student.
BY YANEEK SMITH
Three area football teams got the
chance to live their dreams last week-
end by competing in the state football
playoffs.
Bellevue and Perkins, two Division
III schools, competed against one
another in a regional semifnal and
Genoa, which has qualifed for the
playoffs in six straight seasons, faced
off against Ottawa-Glandorf.
In the Perkins-Bellevue game,
which took place at Clyde High
School last Saturday in front of an es-
timated 4500 people, Perkinse rallied
from a 14-6 defcit to tie the game at
halftime before scoring on the open-
ing drive of the second half to move
ahead, 21-14.
After the Redmen tied the score at
21, Perkins went ahead for the fnal
time, 27-21, after holding Bellevue on
downs midway thru the fourth quar-
ter. With 40 seconds remaining and
the Pirates facing a fourth-and-six
from the Bellevue 31-yard-line, they
opted to go for the win, only to see
quarterback Brandon Smith throw
an interception to Nick Raifsnider,
who returned the ball to the Pirate
42-yard-line.
Five plays later, Redmen quar-
terback Jalen Santoro found Trent
Stamm in the end zone for a 12-yard
touchdown as time expired, setting
off a frenzy before Jake Strayer's extra
point won it, 28-27.
As for Genoa, the Comets fell, 41-
12, to Ottawa-Glandorf (12-0), who
advanced to the Division IV Regional
Final to take on Columbus Bishop
Hartley, the 2010 State Champions.
It was a rough game for Genoa as
they fell behind 14-0 after one quar-
ter and trailed 34-0 at halftime.
The Comets were able to get on the
board with two touchdowns in the
second half, but it was not enough.
All-Ohio running back Kyle Nutter,
who will likely play at a Division I
college next season, fnished with 20
carries for 65 yards and a touchdown
in his fnal game.

VETERANS DAY AT THE VINEYARD ON CATAWBA
BY STEVE GULAS, BOLTE INSURANCE
1. This year Annual Open Enrollment is October 15,
2012 to December 7, 2012.
If you wish to enroll or make a change in your Part D
Prescription Drug plan or Medicare Advantage Plan this
is the time frame in which you will need to act. In order to
select a different plan to be effective for the 2013 beneft
year, you will need to complete your enrollment within
these dates.
2. Re-shop your Medicare Supplemental Plan.
Medicare supplemental plans are not subject to the an-
nual open enrollment time period so you may change
supplemental plans any time of the year. Supplemental
plans are standardized by plan letter. That means cover-
age is identical from one company to another based upon
the same plan letter. If you have had the same supplemen-
tal insurance plan for several years, shop your coverage
to make certain your pricing is competitive. Also consider
looking into different plans. If you have Plan C or F, con-
sider the premium savings beneft of switching to Plan G,
Plan N or even high deductible Plan F. Plan C and F are
two of the most beneft rich plans you can purchase, how-
ever they may not always be your best value.
3. Evaluate your Part D prescription drug plan.
This is much easier than many people think. Medicare
has a great web site in which you can input your prescrip-
tion medications. It allows you to easily compare the pre-
miums and out-of pocket costs that you would have in all
the plans available in your county. Go to www.medicare.
gov and click on Compare Drug and Health Plans. This
web site will also let you know if generics are available for
any medications you are taking and show you what the
cost savings may be by switching to them.
4. Consider enrolling in a Medicare Advantage Plan.
Medicare Advantage plans can be a great value, but they
are not for everyone. Most Medicare Advantage plans
have low premiums and some counties even offer plans
with NO or $0 premium. Most of these plans are HMO or
PPO style plans. Be certain to look into and understand
the out of pocket costs of the plan in the form of deduct-
ibles, co-payments, and coinsurance for medical services.
Know the plans annual out of pocket maximum. Many
of these plans may also include some benefts that are not
included in original Medicare, such as limited dental and
vision benefts and the ability to use a ftness center as part
of enrolling in the plan. Benefts and out of pocket costs
in these plans can vary signifcantly from plan to plan, so
it is important to have a good understanding of how these
plans work prior to enrolling in one. You can visit www.
medicare.gov to see plans that are available in your county.
5. Review your medications with your doctor.
Many people are taking very expensive medications
when generic or other lower cost medications may be
available to treat the same condition. Be certain to talk
with your doctor about the prescriptions you are taking
and ask him/her if there is a generic option or another
lower priced medication they may recommend to treat
your condition.
6. Save time researching Medicare plans by working
with an independent insurance agent who represents
multiple Medicare plans.
An agent authorized to represent multiple plans should
be able to save you time researching plans. With their
knowledge of different plans, after listening to your plan
needs, your independent insurance agent will be able to
make this process much simpler for you.
If you are looking for a local agent to help you select a
Medicare plan call Steve Gulas or Chuck Devore at Bolte
Insurance Agency 419.732.3111. They are authorized to rep-
resent multiple plans.

CONDO FOR RENT
NOTICE OF PUBLIC
HEARING
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR)
Division of Wildlife has joined forces with the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service (Service) to implement a pilot proj-
ect to continue the restoration of native lake trout popula-
tions in Lake Erie.
Lake trout are listed as a species of concern in Ohio be-
cause the population was greatly reduced by sea lamprey
predation, particularly in Lake Eries eastern basin. There
has been very little lake trout natural reproduction docu-
mented in Lake Erie over the last three decades, despite
extensive annual stocking by neighboring state agencies in
the eastern basin.
During the week of Nov. 5, approximately 120,000 sur-
plus lake trout fngerlings were stocked in Ohio waters of
Lake Erie, including the central basin (Fairport Harbor)
and western basin (Catawba). These surplus lake trout
were raised at the newly-renovated Service Allegheny
Fish Hatchery in Warren, Pa. Approximately 200,000 lake
trout are raised annually at the Services hatchery facility
for lake trout restoration efforts in Lake Eries eastern re-
gion.
Lake trout stocked in November have adipose fn clips
and a small, coded wire tag implanted in their snouts. Spe-
cifc lot numbers on the tags allow biologists to recover
stocking, growth, survival and migration return informa-
tion when the fsh is recaptured.
To determine stocking success, ODNR Division of Wild-
life fsh biologists will collect lake trout catch information
and fsh heads from anglers, commercial fshers and future
assessment surveys. Future reef assessment surveys will
determine if adult lake trout are homing in to stocking
locations to spawn. Restoring lake trout as a key predator
in the coldwater regions of Lake Erie will help maintain a
healthy, balanced ecosystem.
The Services mission is to work with others to con-
serve, protect and enhance fsh, wildlife and plants and
their habitats for the continuing beneft of the American
people.
ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protec-
tion of our natural resources for the beneft of all. Visit the
ODNR website at ohiodnr.com.
