The ABF Mud Run at Camp Ockanickon had athletes crawling through mud, climbing walls and working together to
make it through.
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Voorhees Sun
Approximately 600 area athletes
traveled to Camp Ockanickon to test
their physical and mental strength on
Saturday, Oct. 27, in the third ABF
Mud Run.
Owner of Above and Beyond Fit-
ness, and personal trainer and nutri-
tionist, Chad Mason, created the mud
race to challenge dedicated mud-
ders all while donating to charity.
I used to do a lot of charity work
for multiple organizations. I wanted
to find a local organization that we
could help, said Mason. Back in
2006, Camp Ockanickon had shut
down from all the floods. We raised
enough money to help open the trails
camp back up.
Fifty percent of the proceeds col-
lected from the mud run were donat-
ed directly to the camp to help benefit
the YMCA programs, as well as be-
fore- and after-school programs. Addi-
tionally, the proceeds help to send
kids to camp that may not have an op-
portunity. According to Mason, 15
kids were able to attend camp last
year using funds from the run.
Mason runs a cross-fit business,
which participates in various types of
mud runs and extreme events in the
area.
We try to take the best of every
event we do, and make it our own,
said Mason. Most people say this
event was the hardest, most physical-
ly challenging event theyve ever
done.
The 6.4-mile course contains six
water obstacles, a challenge to climb
up and down large hills with 50-pound
bags of sand, water logs to walk
across and other hurdles featured to
challenge the athletes.
The best obstacle was the jar-
heads playground, said Sue Dmo-
chowski, volunteer coordinator.
There were nine obstacles in the
area, and it was only counted as one
[in total]. Ive done Tough Mudders
and Ive never seen anything like this.
Chad did a lot of really good things
creating this course.
Other obstacles on the course in-
cluded tubes, a rope climb across a

A physics chemical experiment
started a fire on Monday, Nov. 12,
at Eastern Regional High School,
causing six students and one
teacher to be transported to the
hospital.
The incident occurred in a sci-
ence room. The students and
teacher were transported to area
hospitals for medical treatment
and precautionary reasons, a
statement released by the high
school said.
Five students and the teacher
were sent to Virtua Hospital and
released last week, police Chief
Lou Bordi said.
One student, initially sent to
Cooper Hospital, was transferred
to St. Christophers Hospital for
Children with first- and second-
degree burns, according to Super-
intendent of School Dr. Harold
Melleby. All students and the
teacher returned to classes by
Thursday, Nov. 15, Melleby said.
Classrooms were up and run-
ning with minimal damage to the
room where the experiment took
place, he said.
According to Bordi, the fire
started just before 1 p.m. in a
chemistry classroom. The
teacher was conducting an exper-
iment, and two classes of stu-
dents were in the room at the
time, he said.
The initial cause of the flash
fire is still under investigation
by the fire department and the
prosecutors office, but normal
chemicals found in the classroom
were used for the experiment, fire
Chief Jim Pacifico said.
The school is also conducting
an investigation, Melleby said.
When responders arrived at
the scene, the fire was extin-
guished and the building evacuat-
ed, he said.
Bordi said no criminal activity
is suspected.
It was an unfortunate mis-
take, he said.

Township approves grant
application for road work
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Voorhees Sun
Usual activity took place at the
Voorhees Committee meeting on
Monday, Nov. 12.
The committee approved the
submission of a grant application
that will allow phase three to be
completed on Victor Boulevard
from Briarwood Boulevard to
Haddonfield-Berlin Road.
According to township busi-
ness administrator Larry Spell-
man, the roads project was divid-
ed into four phases, and the first
two phases were completed in
2010 and 2011. The grant applica-
tion approved at the meeting will
allow the township engineer to
submit the application to the
state, he said.
The township hopes to get ap-
proved and begin construction by
the summer of 2013, Spellman
said.
The township approved funds
from the New Jersey Department
of Transportation High Way Safe-
ty Fund.
Approximately $7,340 was
granted to the township police to
help cover cost for additional traf-
fic monitoring and safety equip-
ment on Route 73, he said.
The police department will
also receive $4,440 from the NJ
Body Armor Replacement Fund
Program.
Police Chief Lou Bordi said
each vest cost approximately $700
per officer.
Maintenance bonds for Virtua
Hospital, release of a mainte-
nance deposit to Terre Verde Es-
tates and a bond reduction for
Lapid Ventures were also ap-
proved.

Thanksgiving Day is a jewel, to set in
the hearts of honest men; but be careful that
you do not take the day, and leave out the
gratitude.
E.P. Powell
Thanksgiving as we know it originated
with the Pilgrims in 1621 with a feast cele-
brating the survival of their first year in
the new world. The party was a traditional
English harvest festival and lasted three
days.
The custom of an annual day for giving
thanks continued through the years and in
the late 1770s, the Continental Congress
suggested a day of national thanksgiving.
In 1817, New York State adopted Thanks-
giving Day as an annual custom. By the
middle of the 19th century, other states
joined in the tradi-
tion. In 1863, Presi-
dent Abraham Lin-
coln appointed a
national day of
Thanksgiving and,
since then each
President has is-
sued a Thanksgiv-
ing Day Proclama-
tion. We now cele-
brate Thanksgiv-
ing on the fourth
Thursday of No-
vember.
Thanksgiving
has become the
unofficial start of
the holiday season. Businesses look for-
ward to the following day, which is the na-
tional phenomenon that has become
known as Black Friday.
The origin comes from the shift to prof-
itability for the retailers during the holi-
day season. It has traditionally been the
time that retailers went from being unprof-
itable or in the red to being profitable or
in the black. The Monday after Thanks-
giving has come to be known as cyber
Monday since retailers give discounts to
online shoppers.
While traditions vary, Thanksgiving
should remain a holiday, which focuses on
food, tradition, family and gratitude.
On behalf of the Township Committee,
have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving.
Remember meaning of holiday this Thanksgiving

MAYORS MESSAGE
T
he holiday season has arrived.
And that means that many
good-hearted people and organ-
izations will be gathering food, cloth-
ing, toys, money and other items for
those less fortunate.
At The Sun, we want to help make
your event as successful as possible.
But to do that, we need your help.
Many retailers count on Black Fri-
day to help put their business in the
black for the year. If holiday sales are
strong, they have a good overall year. If
sales are soft, they struggle to get by.
The same theory can hold true for
nonprofits and other groups that de-
pend on the publics generosity during
the holiday season to see them through
the rest of the year. People, naturally,
are more giving during this time of the
year. So, in the coming weeks, youll
see bell-ringers, donation drives and a
lot of other efforts to help those in
need.
We salute everyone who holds a
drive to help those in need. But we also
want to help make those efforts as
grand and successful as possible.
To do that, we need to know about
your event well in advance (at least two
weeks is best). We need to know what
types of items you are trying to collect,
who will benefit from the drive, and,
most importantly, how people can get
involved to help you.
Email is the best way to send us this
information, and youll find our news
email address throughout this paper.
Then, after we get your information,
well take it from there. Well get it into
the paper and let everyone in town
know what it is you are trying to ac-
complish and how they can be a part of
it.
The recent storm has made giving
this year more important than ever.
Many families are still struggling with
the economy. There always are people
in need.
Let us help you to help them. Send
us your event information and lets
make this a big donation year.

is strong. Tell us about your fundraising

lake, swimming over and under
logs, and the worst, according to
participants, a 30-foot ice bath.
The bath, was a lined dumpster
that was full of ice water com-
plete with a bar to swim under
with barbed wire on top. The ob-
stacle was prepped with multiple
bags of ice, refilled once or twice
every few hours.
Athletes traveled from local
towns, in addition to neighboring
states.
Two brothers, Stephen Vassal-
lo, from Maryland, and Charles
Vassallo, from Brooklyn, traveled
to compete in the event.
I wanted to do something be-
fore the end of racing season,
said Stephen. Weve done Spar-
tan [races] before, and Ive started
to gauge when the events arent
challenging. I did some research
and came across this mud run, it
had everything [we] wanted.
The two competitors wanted a
good cause to accompany the
challenge.
The people who run it are
great. Theyre nice, accommodat-
ing and its a good race, said
Charles.
Its not-for-profit, and has a
pretty good mission, said
Stephen.
Area residents drove the short
distance to Medford for their shot
to compete in the race, as well.
This gave me motivation to
stay in shape. Every time you
wonder should I go out and work
today, I remember I have a race
looming over my head so it gets
you out, said Medford native and
Voorhees native Dave Howarth.
Howarth is a seasoned mud
runner, and welcomes the chal-
lenge the courses bring.
Ive done Mud Man X, the Air
Force base held a mud run, said
Howarth. This course was more
challenging. There were a lot
more obstacles, and a lot of repet-
itive obstacles.
The course was back-to-back
obstacles, according to Mason,
with increasing intensity and
challenge as athletes made their
way through.
We had people out there push-
ing you, and making you account-
able for your actions, said
Mason.
At the other mud runs, theres
nobody there [at the obstacles].
There might be a kid pointing. I
tried to demonstrate, and have all
my volunteers demonstrate.
The mud run was more of an
obstacle course than a traditional
running event. Athletes ran a
total of one mile between obsta-
cles.
This was an extreme obstacle
event, not a running event, said
Mason.
Overall, though, according to
Mason, it isnt about being the
best, its about finishing the
course and how athletes chal-
lenged themselves.
This is why mud runs are dif-
ferent than marathons, half
marathons or triathlons. These
people arent running against the
clock, theyre just running to see
if they can finish it, said Mason.

ual or a team member, and come

Special to The Sun
Students, staff and community members celebrated Veterans
Day at the E.T. Hamilton School with a school-wide assembly
program. The theme of the day was "Thank a Veteran." Many
veterans attended this event and were honored with a special
flag created by the students. State Assemblyman Louis Green-
wald was the keynote speaker and spoke about the special
place veterans have in the hearts of all citizens.
Veterans Day at E.T. Hamilton
Special to The Sun
The Camden County Freeholders, Camden County Veterans Af-
fairs Office and the Jewish War Veterans Post 126 of Cherry
Hill sponsored a Veterans Day Medal Ceremony, held at the
Kennedy Health Systems corporate office in Voorhees on Nov.
8. More than 25 veterans, ranging in age from 33 to 90, who
have served in the military from World War II received special
medals at the ceremony, which has been held annually since
2001. Pictured at the ceremony are Kennedy ER nurse Teresa
Crutchfield, left, and her son, Christopher Mohrmann of West
Berlin, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1997 to 2001;
SFC Allen Rodesky of Oaklyn; Stanley Quammen of West Berlin,
who served in the U.S. Army in 1970, his son, Steve Quammen
and retired U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Al Bancroft from the Camden
County Veterans Affairs Office.

Lighting the way for others,
Val Nunnenkamp was presented
the Luminary Award by the Little
Rock Foundation at their 15th An-
nual Fall Festival on Saturday,
Nov. 3, at Please Touch Museum
in Philadelphia.
In addition, to Nunnenkamps
recognition, there were two spe-
cial guests recognized at this
years event who are both inspira-
tions. Tara Miller, severely visual-
ly impaired with only 6 percent
sight in one eye, is an award-win-
ning professional photographer.
Her photographs were displayed
and for sale, as well in the live
auction. Tara shared with the
guests how she is able to do pho-
tography.
Chris Cavallerano ran the
Boston Marathon blindfolded in
honor of Rocco Fiorentino, 15,
who is totally blind and the Am-
bassador of The Little Rock Foun-
dation. Cavallerano raised $25,000
for Braille Literacy.
An interactive theme was the
signature of the evening, because
after guests registered in the
Carousel House at Please Touch
Museum, they were invited to
participate in Walk on the Blind
Side. With assistance from Ori-
entation and Mobility Specialists
from Salus University, guests
were given a white cane to aide
them as they walk through a jour-
ney into darkness, a pitch black
passageway, and find their way to
the entrance of the event.
They were guided by a taped
voice of Fiorentino. Roccos par-
ents, Tina and Rocco Fiorentino,
to support other families like
theirs with children who are
blind or severely visually im-
paired, launched the Little Rock
Foundation.
The Luminary Award was cre-
ated by The Little Rock Founda-
tion to focus positive attention on
someone who lights the way for
others and Voorhees Nun-
nenkamp is the ideal recipient.
Selfless in so many ways, he has
raised over $200,000 for many
charities in the area. The
Fiorentinos are thrilled to recog-
nize Nunnenkamp.
Val is one of those people who
take great pride in helping others.
His dedication and continued
support for so many charities has
provided a better life for thou-
sands of people in need. He has
hosted charitable events for over
twenty-one years, raising an as-
tounding $200,000 for them, said
Tina Fiorentino, executive direc-
tor of The Little Rock Founda-
tion.
Nunnenkamp is an award-win-
ning sales associate of Prudential
Fox & Roach. As a realtor in
South Jersey, he has an impres-
sive resume, hailing the titles of
Top 100 Realtors Nationwide with
Prudential Fox & Roach for 13
years in a row and the number
one Sales Associate of the Year,
with record sales. It is this drive
that leads his community life as
well as he is a board member of
many prestigious non-profit or-
ganizations. Proud to receive the
Luminary Award, he said, When
Rocco and Tina told me I was
being honored, I was over-
whelmed and speechless. I could
not believe they chose me for
such a special honor. I am truly
humbled by the recognition and
so proud to have been able to con-
tribute to the Little Rock Founda-
tion for so many years.
