understanding of a topic with increasing complexity for 8th grade Focusing on task, purpose, and audience, produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate (see 1-3 above) Develop and strengthen writing by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach with guidance from peers and adults Continue to use technology, including web-based collaboration to produce and publish writing Answer a question through short research projects on a self-generated question while drawing on several sources AND generating additional related, focused questions for further research and investigation Use specific search terms effectively to gather information from, and assess the credibility of, sources, following standard form MLA to document sources (APA in 11th & 12th), and quote or paraphrase the data or conclusions Draw information from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research Effectively engage in collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grade 8 topics (one-on-one, group, and teacher-led) building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly Prepare for discussion by pre-reading and explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to text evidence to probe and reflect on ideas under discussion Pose questions that connect the ideas of several speakers and respond to others questions and comments with relevant evidence, observations, and ideas Acknowledge new information others express, qualify or justify their own views in light of new evidence, and, when warranted, modify their views Analyze the purpose of information presented in diverse media and formats (Honors) Evaluate the motives behind their presentation Analyze and evaluate a speakers argument and claims, the reasoning and the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence (Honors) Identify when irrelevant evidence is introduced Present claims and findings emphasizing salient points in a focused coherent manner with pertinent descriptions, facts, and details, AND sound valid reasoning and well-chosen details Use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation Use multimedia components and visual displays in presentations to clarify information, strengthen claims and add interest Continue to distinguish between formal and informal English when speaking and presenting: Knowledge and awareness of audience Continue to show progress and mastery in 6th & 7th grade grammar skills Proper use of Compound/Complex sentences Appropriate use of colons and semicolons Spell correctly words appropriate to grade level Choose words and phrases to convey ideas precisely Use punctuation correctly to indicate a pause (commas, ellipses, dashes) Recognize and correct inappropriate shifts in verb voice and mood Write about literature in PRESENT TENSE No contractions in formal writing Use context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase; distinguish between common 8th grade homophones and homonyms Use grade level 8 common Greek or Latin affixes and roots as clues to word meaning Identify and analyze imagery & common figures of speech: extended metaphor, assonance, consonance, oxymoron, paradox, verbal irony, puns, etc (Honors) Metonymy, Antithesis, onomatopiea Explore words with similar denotations (bullheaded, willful, firm, persistent, resolute) The student knows that the universe is a vast system in which basic rules exist that may range from very simple to extremely complex, but that scientists operate on the belief that the rules can be discovered by careful, systematic study. The student knows that scientists control conditions in order to obtain evidence, but when that is not possible for practical or ethical reasons, they try to observe a wide range of natural occurrences to discern patterns. The student knows that scientist in any one research group tend to see things alike, and therefore scientific teams are expected to seek out the possible sources of bias in the design of their investigations and in their data analysis. The student knows that investigations are conducted to explore new phenomena, to check on previous results, to test how well a theory predicts and to compare different theories. The student knows that from time to time major shifts occur in the scientific view of how the world works, but that more often the changes that take place in the body of scientific knowledge are small modifications of prior knowledge. The student understands that no matter how well one theory fits observations, a new theory might fit them as well or better or might fit a wider range of observations, because in science, the testing, revising, and occasional discarding of theories, new and old, never ends and leads to an increasingly better understanding of how things work in the world, but not to absolute truth. The student knows that technological problems often create a demand for new scientific technologies and make it possible for scientist to extend their research in a way that advances science. The student knows the difference between an element, a molecule, and a compound The student knows that a change from one phase of matter to another involves a gain or loss of energy The student understands how knowledge of energy is fundamental to all the scientific disciplines (e.g., the energy required for the building, erosion, and building of the Earth). The student knows that the number and configuration of electrons will equal the number of protons in an electrically neutral atom and when an atom gains or loses electrons, the charge is unbalanced. The student knows that elements are arranged into groups and families based on similarities in electron structure and that their physical and chemical properties can be predicted. The student knows that connections (bonds) form between substances when outer-shell electrons are either transferred or shared between their atoms, changing the properties of the substances. The student knows that the electron configuration in atoms determines how a substance reacts and how much energy is involved in its reactions. The student understands that there is conservation of mass and energy when matter is transformed. The student experiments and determines that the rates of reaction among atoms and molecules depends on the concentration, pressure, and temperature of the reactants and the presence or absence of a catalyst. The student knows that temperature is a measure of the average translational kinetic energy of motion of the molecules in an object. The student knows that the total amount of usable energy always decreases, even though the total amount of energy is conserved in any transfer. The student knows that layers of energyrich organic materials have been gradually turned into great coal beds and oil pools (fossil fuels) by the pressure of the overlying earth and that humans burn fossil fuels to release the stored energy as heat and carbon dioxide. The student knows that each source of energy presents advantages and disadvantages to its use in society (e.g., political and economic implications may determine a societys selection of renewable or nonrenewable energy sources). The student knows that the structure of the universe is the result of interactions involving fundamental particles (matter) and basic forces, energy and that evidence suggests that the universe contains all the matter and energy that ever existed. The student explains that all forces come in pairs commonly called action and reaction.
