Drug Addiction has become a serious social problem. Day by day young boys and girls are getting addicted to drugs. What is actually Drug Addiction?

Its characteristics include: (1) An overpowering desire or need (compulsion) to continue taking the drug and to obtain it by any means; (2) A tendency to increase the dose;

Drug Addiction
The root causes of taking drugs are frustration, unemployment problem, and curiosity to new things. A great change occurs in the body of drug addict. He loses his control over body and mind. He loses his appetite & feels drowsy. His weight began to drop. This addiction carries the

addict to an unreal world of dreams. This is called hallucination and it leads someone to social crime like hijacking, killing, robbery etc. to manage money for getting drug. Drug has variety of items including opium, marijuana, heroine, morphin,coccain etc. Use of marijuana affects short-term memory and severe brain damage. Cocaine causes headaches, hypertension and increased heart-rate, insomnia, loss of weight, convulsions and depression. Acute overdose of any drugs which can lead to death. Most of the drugs are taken by smoking, inhaling or by injecting. Sharing injecting equipment with others to take drugs, carries a very high risk of transmission of HIV as well as other diseases such as hepatitis B and C.

Vital Statistics of Drug Addiction

Vital Statistics Today there are about 190 million drug users around the world. Drug use has been increasing among the young people worldwide. Most drug abusers are under the age of 30. In 1999, the number of countries reporting injecting drug use was 136, up from 80 in 1992. Of these, 93 countries also identified HIV among drug injectors. Cannabis is the most widely abused drug in all parts of the world The full economic cost of drug abuse in the United States is estimated at approximately $70 billion annually. Cocaine abuse among the unemployed in Columbia was found to be 10 times higher than among those working. The illicit drug industry is now estimated to be over $400 billion per year.

Kinds of Drugs

What kinds of drugs are being abused?


Drugs of abuse fall into three categories: depressants (e.g. heroin, barbiturates), stimulants (e.g. cocaine, crack, amphetamines) and hallucinogens (e.g. marijuana, ecstasy, LSD1), and are either ingested, inhaled, smoked, injected or snorted.

Depressants These are sedatives which act on the nervous system. Artificial relaxation and relief from anxiety and mental stress tend to produce psychological dependence and withdrawal from heavy use is severe. Stimulants These are agents that activate, enhance, or increase neural activity. They include amphetamines and Synthetic appetite suppressants such as phenmetrazine or methylphenidate. They can give rise to symptoms suggestive of intoxication, including tachycardia, papillary dilation, elevated blood pressure, nausea or vomiting and abnormal behavior such as fighting, agitation and impaired judgment. A full-blown delusional psychosis may occur. Hallucinogens These are a chemically divers group which produce profound mental changes such as euphoria, anxiety, sensory distortion, vivid hallucination, delusion, paranoia and depression. They include mescaline and LSD.

People who abuse drugs come from all walks of life, although statistics show that some are more likely to take drugs than others. For instance, Men are more likely to abuse drugs than women. Single more than married, City dwellers more than rural residents Younger more than older. Prisoners and street children also show a high incidence of drug abuse

CONCLUSION:
Drug is such a curse that shatters the future hope of a life, family & a nation. Strict law should be enforced to abstained people from taking drug as well as public awareness should be increased by campaigning.
