Kendra Squires Service Project Paper 11-23-12 For my Service Learning Project I participated with The University of Colorado

Foundation Creating Futures. I participated in the organization by volunteering my time with two major projects. The reason I choose this foundation was because I appreciated their dedication in making education an opportunity for everyone. The foundations main goal is to, create futures by raising and managing funds on behalf of The University of Colorado. Our donors are fueling Creating Futures- the most ambitious fundraising campaign in CUs 135-year history. With foundations like The University of Colorado foundation, the University has raised more than 900 million since the phase of the campaign began in 2006. The primary focus of Creating Futures is funding scholarships, providing faculty and program enhancements through endowments and direct gifts, facility upgrades and buildings, research activities supported by private funding. The first event that I participated with was a breakfast that involved the launch of a new Construction Engineering and Management Program. I was involved with making the invitations and organizing the guest list and nametags. The program is designed to prepare graduate students to meet a current need to improve our current building environment. It gives students a broader array of skills for those who are already in the work field, giving them the opportunity to advance to the top of their fields. The CEM Program will ensure them a pipeline of innovation. The Interim Chancellor, Donald Elliman who with his team was able to provide valid information for current workers in the Construction and Engineering industry, held the Breakfast. The idea of the breakfast was to inform them about how important and efficient this program could be. With their support this program could be made possible. You have to be involved in the public planning process. You need to look years ahead in building infrastructure. CU Denvers Construction Engineering and Management Program will enable those leaders to develop. As CU Denver alum in civil engineering and business administration, I think this program is brilliant. Its exactly what we should do to foster the success of our industry, stated Gary Meggison Senior Vice President of RJM Construction. And many others who attended the breakfast agreed. All in the entire meeting was a major success and I was proud to be a part of it. It really gave me an outlook on CU Denver and how it strives to be a school with many opportunities. The next event that I participated was a Campus Showcase for CU Trustees and Guests. It was an informative lunch held to discuss new programs and whats going on with The University Colorado Denver. Rick Lawrence the foundations President and CEO, Rebecca Kantor Dean of School of Education and Human Development, and Dan Howard Dean of College of Liberal Arts and Science all spoke at the luncheon. I participated with the development of the invitations, guest lists, nametags, and presentation. This luncheon was incredibly moving to me because it brought up

real issues the University is facing. Rebecca Kantor discussed the topics concerning the lack of teachers of color. There is such an increase in minorities in the school system that there needs to be in an increase for teachers of color because students learn better with teachers of similar color. She wants to introduce an Urban Community Teacher Education Program that will focus on preparing educators to serve urban multi-cultural youth. Dan Howard also discussed children of the future wanting to increase the availability of programs in Health Careers to The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. UCD has an array of programs offered in the health field. The problem is, many pre-health students from the University will not go to Medical School. Dan Howard wants to change this by introducing a BA/BS-MD Program and increasing the number of scholarships for medical programs. Donald Elliman states, The increasing number of health programs offered by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences give our undergraduates more opportunities than ever before to prepare for careers in health fields. They also help CU Denver foster long-term economic competiveness and healthy, high-quality communities throughout the Denver metropolitan area. With the donors help these opportunities could be made possible. With their support, scholarships, endowed chairs and professorships, and research centers would be made possible. Volunteering with these two projects really opened my eyes to how involved outside people are to making our University so great. Without their help The University Colorado Denver would not have come as far as it has. The foundations next major project, actually their biggest of the year, is their Donor Dinner. Even though this assignment is done for the class I still plan to volunteer and continue volunteering with such a great foundation!
