Tributes to Heswall councillor
THE death was announced last month of Heswall
councillor and former Wirral Mayor Peter Johnson.
Mr Johnson served as a Conservative councillor for
the Heswall area from 1991 and was mayor in 2006-
2007. The 74-year-old was a popular gure in Lower
Heswall where he ran the family farm and formerly the
newsagents with his wife Ann.
Fellow Heswall councillor Andrew Hodson described
him as a true gentleman and a man of few words who
worked hard for his constituents.
Conservative group leader Cllr Jeff Green said: Peter
was an outstanding local councillor who always put the
interests of his constituents rst.
He was a tremendous member of the Conservative
group and played a vital role on the Fire and Rescue Authority.
Of course, he was an excellent mayor of Wirral too and did a huge amount for the
area, gaining respect from everyone who met him.
Pub owners against care home plan
THE Jug and Bottle pub in Heswall is set to remain a drinking venue for the
foreseeable future after the owners decided against selling to a care home provider.
Operators Stange and Co say they are committed to the future of the pub despite
interest from developers THI who want to buy up land around the venue for a 50-bed
extra care home.
Heswall man ned for off-road riding
A 23-year-old man from Sandy A Lane, Heswall, appeared before Wirral Magistrates
Court charged with driving while disqualied having been stopped whilst riding an off ff
road motor bike near his house. He pleaded guilty and was ned 100 along with
85 costs and 15 surcharge. He was also disqualied from driving for a further six
months.

admitting stealing from Tesco and Marks and Spencer in Heswall.
zA thief from Birkenhead was given a ne by Wirral magistrates after she pleaded
guilty to stealing from Sainsburys, on Pensby Road, Heswall. The 51-year-old woman
appeared before Wirral magistrates who ned her 80 and ordered her to pay costs of
85, a 15 surcharge and 21.96 compensation.
Parking problem outside school
MOTORISTS who park inconsiderately or illegally outside St Peters Primary School,
on Thurstaston Road, Heswall, arebeing targeted by local police.
z Extra police patrols are taking place in car parks in Heswall following reports of
thefts from cars in the area.
z TWO men have been arrested for stealing from cars and burglary in Thornton
Hough.

AS part of the recent Heswall Arts
Festival a series of four science
lectures were presented at Heswall
Hall.
The day was sponsored by Heswall U3A
and was organised by the Rotary Clubs
of West Wirral and Mid-Wirral. The topics
were both wide-ranging and thought
provoking, ranging from the evolution of
stars to fun with combustion!
Mike Hayward, head of science at
Birkenhead School, took visitors
through the chemistry of his lively
demonstrations of intense ames,
ashes, bangs and rockets using
materials sometimes commonly found
in the home. This was, of course,
accompanied by warnings of dont try
this at home!
Donald McIntyre, a retired physicist from
EA Technology, Capenhurst, analysed A
how over the centuries many great artists
must have used both simple and complex
scientic equipment to create their works
of art with correct perspective. He showed
us how we need to position ourselves
at a specic viewing point for the arts
perspective to be seen correctly. Yet YY
further he considered the use of illusions in
art (such as in Eschers famous paintings)
and how to take and correctly view
photographs taken with todays cameras.
Maurizio Solaris presented us with current
knowledge of what happened following the
big bang, how the stars developed and how
life on our planet had required the formation
of elements heavier than hydrogen. He also
considered what the future of the universe
might be. Somewhat controversially Prof
Salaris, from the department of astrophysics
at John Moores University, indicated there
may be problems with the big bang model of
the universe.
Liverpool University physicist John Fry
considered two radically opposing points of
view about what happens now, today and in
the future. One view, determinism, is that
todays actions are completely governed
by sequential previous events going into
the distant past. The opposing view for
consideration is that events of today
and into the future are ones of free will.
The analyses of the two viewpoints were
complex and at the end of the lecture most
in the audience were left deep in thought.
