Estimation of Sodium Hydroxide
Aim : To estimate the amount of sodium hydroxide present in 250ml of given
solution by using 0.1M HCl solution.
Apparatus and Chemicals required :
Burette, Burette stand, Pipette, Conical flask, Methyl orange Indicator,
Glazed tile, 0.1M HCl solution, given NaOH solution
Principle : HCl reacts with NaOH by the following equation.
HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H 2O
1mole 1mole
Here, 1 mole HCl reacts with 1 mole NaOH
Procedure : The solution taken in burette is 0.1M HCl solution. 20ml of given
NaOH solution is transferred into a conical flask with the help of a pipette. Then
taken in burette. At the end point colour of the solution changes from yellow to
pale pink colour. Then, the volume of HCl solution run down from burette is
noted. The titrations are repeated till consecutive readings are obtained
Tabular Form :

1 20 ml
2 20 ml
3 20 ml
∴ Volume of HCl solution = _______________________

Formula : n = n

V1 = Volume of HCl solution = ____________________ ml
M 1 = Molarity of HCl solution = 0.1M
n1 = No.of moles of HCl in the equation = 1 mole
V2 = Volume of NaOH solution = 20 ml
M 2 = Molarity of NaOH solution = ?
n2 = No.of moles of NaOH in the equation = 1 mole
V1 M 1 n 2
∴ Molarity of NaOH, M 2 = ×

∴ Molarity of NaOH = M 2 = _________________ M
Amount of NaOH present in 250 ml of given solution

Report :
Amount of NaOH present in 250ml of given solution = __________ gms
