Smoke detector

Volvo is offering a new optical smoke detector which gives a warning in the event of fire or smoke. The smoke detector signals the presence of smoke particles entering the detector. Other particles of the same type, such as cigarette smoke, dust and exhaust gas may also cause an alarm. The detector has a low battery voltage warning function. It also has a timer function so that it can be switched off (for a smoking break for instance). The detector returns to normal operation after ten minutes. The smoke detector has been crash-tested. It is installed on the drivers side above the windshield. The smoke detector is not recommended for use on ADR vehicles, since they are battery powered.

It is often difficult to see someone wearing dark clothes close to a vehicle by the roadside. The safety vest makes you clearly visible. It is made of a fluorescent textile and it features three 50 mm wide reflective strips at the front and back. The reflective material is resistant to fuel and oil and works well in both wet and dry conditions. The vest is stored in a plastic bag and it is washable at 40C.

Volvo Truck Alarm

The Volvo Truck Alarm is an alarm system which has been specially designed for Volvo trucks to provide the most effective protection against break-ins and theft. The alarm features a separate battery so that it operates independently of the vehicles electrical system, and it also has a separate siren to ensure uninterrupted function. The alarm systems battery is charged by the truck radios voltage converter.

Protection
The Volvo Truck Alarm offers protection from break-ins at a number of points. The doors are protected by the factory-fitted door-operated courtesy light switches. If either door is opened when the alarm is armed, the electrical circuit is broken and the alarm systems siren goes off. The trucks front hatches are protected in a similar way by magnetic contacts so that the hatches cannot be opened without setting off the alarm. This protects the vital components behind the hatches at the front. Furthermore, the cab cannot be tilted without setting off the alarm. The battery box is also protected by a magnetic contact to avoid theft of the batteries. To warn would-be thieves that the truck is equipped with an alarm, a flashing LED is fitted in full visibility just inside the windscreen. This information panel also features a glass-breakage sensor which reacts to the noise created if a window is broken. In addition to the flashing LED, the panel can also be configured to indicate if the alarm has been activated and to warn of any faults in the alarm circuit. The alarm features an immobiliser which prevents the engine from being started up if the alarm is activated. The alarm is factory-prepared for installation of a siren and extra sensors, either micro-wave or

passive IR (infra-red) units.

Operation
The alarm is operated with a radio remote control. It is pre-programmed (vehicles after W0202 are not pre-programmed, this is done by the dealer at the time of installation) with an AGC code (anti-grabber code: this protects against recording the transmitter code and against falsifying the code with a scanner transmitter). Radio control allows the driver to arm the alarm system and lock the doors at the same time with just one press of the button. For vehicles after W0202, it is possible to lock the driver and passenger doors separately.

Operational functions
On FM/FH vehicles fitted with central locking, the alarm for this is connected in both doors. The remote control unit is used to lock the doors at the same time as the alarm is armed. FL and F trucks with central locking are not designed for remote control of the door locks.

Alcolock Accessory kit

The Volvo Alcolock is an electronic breath alcohol analyser, designed to reduce alcohol related accidents. The Alcolock requires the driver to take a breath test before the engine can be started. It consists of a stationary unit inside the instrument panel and a hand-held unit with cable. Mouthpieces are available to purchase in packages of 25 pieces. The service and calibration interval for the Alcolock unit is 12 months. Benefits:

Instructions
Activation is done in two different ways: by pressing the button on the right of the Alcolock unit or by turning on/off the ignition key. The ignition key must be turned off when the Alcolock is activated. When turning on the Alcolock unit the LCD display says Wait, followed by Blow for 5 seconds. The driver then exhales through a mouthpiece (one per user) on the handheld unit for five seconds. Should the breath test be accepted, Start Motor is shown in the display. Should the alcohol level be over the set limit then Lock Out will be displayed and the engine cannot be started. A new breath test cannot be done less than 1 minute after the previous test. When passing the test successfully, the driver has 5 minutes to start the engine. If the engine has been switched off for less than 30 minutes the engine can be re-started without a new breath test. Volvos alcolock measures the alcohol content very accurately, but the content can be affected by external conditions. An approved breath test is not a full guarantee for an alcohol content below the tolerance level and will not give any legal protection against driving under the influence.
