Eating Disorders & Mental Health

This new module delivered at Masters level (level 7), has been developed in partnership with the British Dietetic Associations Mental Health Group. It is a single module that may be accessed by qualified Dietitians as a stand alone module or as part of a named award (Post Graduate Certificate/Diploma/MSc Advanced Nutrition). It has been designed to reflect the healthcare and educational needs of Dietitians working within the field of mental health and/or eating disorders, with the aim of supporting the development of specialist skills and competencies that underpin dietetic practice within the mental health setting. The module will extend your knowledge of eating disorders and mental health by integrating nutritional, physiological and psychological perspectives, current treatments and service user needs.

Location: City Campus Start Date: Week commencing 17th October 2011 with follow up day 14th December 2011 Length of study: 4 days

We aim to ensure this award is accessible to dietitians across the UK and beyond. The programmecomprises4daysofface-to-faceteaching(deliveredasa3dayblock-followedby 1 day), incorporating problem based learning and group work, alongside related learning and assessmenttaskssupportedthroughourvirtuale-learningplatform,X-stream.Themodule entails 200 learning hours in total. Eachstudentisallocatedatutortosupporttheirlearningthroughoutthe4-daytaught componentofthecourseandtheirpost-courseassignments.

Assessment
This is in 2 parts: A written case study of a patient with a mental health condition (60%)  linical reflective log of practice-basedon40hourspractice.Thismayincludeclinicalwork C within a mental health setting, shadowing of team members, attendance/contribution to study days, presentations, audit, research team members/case discussion and development of protocols and care pathways as appropriate to the professional (40%)

Entry Requirements
You must be a registered Dietitian qualified for at least 18 months and have a honours degree of 2:2 classification or above. For those with no prior experience in mental health settings, the completion of the BDAs Introduction to Mental Health Course is essential
