BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE, PILANI HYDERABAD CAMPUS INSTRUCTION DIVISION FIRST SEMESTER 2012-2013 No.

ID/T/7 November 30, 2012 To All the Students Very soon you are going to write the Comprehensive Examinations. I am sure that all of you are putting sincere efforts to perform well in these Examinations. There are some important points which I would like to mention regarding Academic Honesty. 1. The seating arrangement for the Examinations is displayed on all LTC and Instruction Division notice boards and has also been posted on the CMS website. You must make a note of the seating arrangement announced and report to the Examination Hall/Room assigned to you accordingly at least 10 minutes in advance. You will not be allowed to appear for the examination if you arrive after the commencement of the examination. All students must carry their Identity Card to their Examination Hall, which must be shown on demand by invigilators. Students, who fail to produce their ID cards on demand, may be asked to leave the examination hall. Do not attempt to secure unfair advantage for yourself in any academic exercise. Do not involve yourself in cheating or deception, fraud and/or misrepresentation in your academic work. Do not copy answers from another student Do not use books/notes (unless it is open book), and do not converse with others. Do not bring any electronic devices such as digital diaries, palm tops, mobile phones and other electronic devices. Do not attempt to secure any other type of external assistance during an examination without the permission of the instructor/invigilator. Exchange of calculators, geometrical tools or any other equipment is prohibited. Do not collaborate with others on homework, lab reports, computer programs, or other academic assignments without the permission of the instructor. Do not try to obtain the questions of an examination prior to its administration. Do not involve yourself in fabrication or falsification or invention of any information or citation in any academic exercise. Do not attempt to manipulate data in any laboratory experiment or any other academic exercise or research without permission of the instructor Do not alter and resubmit returned academic work without permission of the instructor. Do not misrepresent the actual source from which information is cited.

Do not involve yourself in Plagiarism or representation of the words or ideas of another as ones own work in any academic exercise. This includes: Failure to properly identify direct quotations by quotation marks or appropriate indentation and formal citation Failure to acknowledge and properly cite paraphrasing or summarizing material from another source. Failure to acknowledge and properly cite information obtained from the Internet or other electronic media as well as other sources Submission of term papers written by another, including those obtained from commercial term paper companies or the internet Do not involve yourself in facilitating dishonesty or knowingly helping or attempting to help another commit any act of academic dishonesty. Do not substitute for another person in an examination Do not allow another to copy your work in an examination or other academic exercise Students should check with their instructor(s) if they have any question as to what is or is not permitted in a specific course. Since students are expected to be familiar with the Academic Honesty and the commonly accepted standards of academic integrity, ignorance of such standards by itself is not sufficient evidence of lack of intent. Do not submit all or substantial portions of the same work to fulfill the requirements for more than one course without the prior permission of the instructor(s). Do not forge or otherwise alter grades, transcripts, course withdrawal forms, or other academic document. Do not illegally access a computer hard drive. Do not steal or destroy the academic work of another, such as a computer disk, term paper, or notebook. All students must appear for the comprehensive examinations. In case of some extreme emergency, where a makeup is sought, an application in this regard must be submitted to the Instruction Division in advance. Do not use any kind of unfair means during the examinations. In case you are found using unfair means then i. you may lose one or two semesters; ii. your graduation will be delayed iii. you may not be allowed to appear for the placement iv. you will not get any opportunity to pursue any kind of higher degree in the institute . Do not leave the examination hall without handing over the answer book to the invigilator on duty. Good luck to all of you.
