WHAT I HAVE WRITTEN, I HAVE WRITTEN

In John 19:22, Pilate declares, What I have written, I have written, to the chief priests who ask him to change the inscription fastened to the cross of Jesus. The inscription, written in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek, reads Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. The priests want Pilate to change the inscription to read that this man claims to be the king of the Jews. Pilate refuses. Gerald Borchert (New American Commentary) points out that this exchange between Pilate and the priests emphasizes two major themes of Johns gospel: that Jesus was going to the hour of his glorification (cf. 2:4 to 17:1), and that he was also the expected King of Israel (cf. 1:49 to 12:13 and to the present verses). For John, nothing could change these realities. Jesus kingship was certified by both God and Rome. Christmas carols proclaiming Jesus as the promised Messiah are sung all over the world by people who do not believe it. I used to be bothered when celebrities who are unbelievers would sing Christmas carols that proclaim the gospel but have no personal faith in Christ. They know our songs but they do not know our Savior. However, the inscription on the cross placed by an unbelieving Roman governor still proclaims the truth about our Lord. So I am thankful that during this Christmas season many sing songs about our Lord even if they do not know Him. And I pray that the truth of the gospel will penetrate unbelieving hearts. Merry Christmas!

PROPERTY STEWARDSHIP CONFERENCE HELPS CHURCHES KEEP STRATEGIC SITES

When DBAs executive director, Bob Dean, read the book Lost Dallas, he learned about several historic Dallas church buildings that were sold to for-profit businesses and then subsequently demolished. Dallas former Hardrock Caf on McKinney Avenue, for example, used to be a Baptist church. Now it is a parking lot in Uptown, one of the fastest growing neighborhoods of Dallas. To help churches retain their locations in strategic neighborhoods like Uptown, DBA provided a conference in November with sessions led by attorneys and people with expertise in property insurance and tax issues. Conference participants learned about the advantage of deed reversion clauses to assure that church property will continue to be used for Kingdom work even if their church ceases to exist. In addition, they learned how to navigate the details of tax exemptions, property acquisition, sharing space, and selling property. DBAs Vickery Baptist Church is an example of a church that has pro-actively assured that its property will continue to be used as a Gospel witness for generations. Their building is situated in the heart of Dallas Vickery

LOVE OF GOD FAMILY CHURCH

Billy Bell, consultant, church planting

Pastor Andre Hudson of Love of God Family Church, Lancaster, and his congregation are excited to be moving into their new, permanent facility in December. God has blessed them by providing the resources to purchase the land and construct the church building in six short years. Pastor Hudson acknowledges the support extended by Dallas Baptist Association, Texas Baptists and the Baptist Church Loan

Corporation during that time. He says that, even without a permanent building, Love of God Family Church conducted ministry in many creative ways from various locations. Church ministries and worship have been located in a storefront in Dallas Lancaster Kiest Shopping Center, a small church in Pleasant Grove, the fellowship hall at More Than Conquerors Church, and at First Baptist Church, Lancaster.

We thank God for great mentors including Dr. Billy Bell and Dr. Roy Cotton, he states passionately. Several others have also helped us discover a very valuable lesson over the past six years: ministry is not based on a building, but on the Great Commission.

Meadows refugee community near Northpark Mall. Pastor Herb Walker led the church to include a reversion clause in the churchs deed which reverts the property to DBA should the church cease to exist. DBA can then ensure that the property is acquired by another church or ministry instead of a commercial interest. For more information about property stewardship issues, contact Bob Dean, 214-319-1159 or bobdean@dba.net.

WMU NEWS: THIS CHRISTMAS, GIVE A GIFT OF ETERNAL SIGNIFICANCE

Think about giving toward a missions camp experience for girls in grades 1 through 6. They may be girls who are faithful in your congregation or perhaps those within your ministry reach. Minicamp is March 22-23, and Girls Missions Camp is July 28-August 2, both at Mt. Lebanon. Within the context of our summer 2012 Girls Missions Camp, Savanah Sharpless of West Mesquite Church was inspired to do something to help foster parents during the first hours after they learn they will receive a child. Savanahs Closet has been established to collect necessary supplies and make them available so the parents can immediately focus on the child. Yes, give generously to your missions offering that travels around the world touching lives. But think also about investing in a potentially life-changing missions experience for a young woman.
