Overview
Chapter 1 Overview
This document is valid for both units TU 21124 and TU 21124.05. The only difference between these two units is that TU 21124.05 has a synchronization interface block in its structure. These data units are members of the DYNANET family of products. The units contain two data channels, the transmission rate of which can be set to n x 64 kbit/s, n being 1,2,3,...,31. Characteristics:
D D D
2 data channels Data interface can be selected to comply with the Recommendation RS-449 (V.11), V.35 or X.21 Time slots used by the data interfaces are selectable in the range 1...31. Time slot 16 is normally allocated for control signals. If the channel rate is 31 x 64 kbit/s = 1984 kbit/s, control signals and other channels cannot be used. In TU 21124.05 the 2M clock of the MUX unit can be synchronized with the n x 64 kbit/s clock (n = 1 to 31) obtained from the DTE Control signals received from the far end can be filtered Both data channels can be looped for testing Channel settings are selected using a Service Terminal or a Transmission Management System (TMS) State of the channels can be monitored with the Service Terminal or TMS.

Operation
Chapter 2 Operation
The Data Unit TU 21124(.05) comprises two n x 64 kbit/s data channels and combines two synchronous data streams from the DTE to the DM 2 Multiplex Equipment. The block diagram is shown in Figure 1. The data unit carries out the buffering required for the generation of a continuous data stream. The unit inserts the transmitted data (from the DTE) to the 2 Mbit/s time slots of the DM 2 bus and transfers the data received (to the DTE) to the n x 64 kbit/s line. The time slots to be used are selectable and they are the same in both directions. The control signals are transferred in the signalling channels of one selectable channel. The channel is the same in both directions. The control signals in the 2 Mbit/s bus use time slot 16. The functions of the unit are controlled by a microcontroller which is equipped with external EPROM and RAM memories. The power is supplied by a built-in power supply. Control functions directed to the unit by the user are selected with a Service Terminal or a Transmission Management System via the DM 2 Multiplex Equipment. The unit can be looped for testing in the DTE direction according to the ITU-T Recommendations X.150/3b or X.150/3c, or in the DCE direction according to ITU-T Recommendation X.150/2b.

Control signals
The Data unit receives the control signals from the terminal equipment via the line interface and sends the corresponding information to the far end in signalling time slot 16 of the selected data transfer time slot. Signal 105 is transferred to the far end as signal 109. Signal 108 is transferred to the far end as signal 106. It can be selected that signal 105 is transferred to the far end as signal 109 and to the near end as signal 106. In that case signalling bit a(108) is in forced OFF-state. Correspondingly, the Data unit reads control signals received from the far end in signalling time slot 16 of the selected data transfer time slot and sends them to the terminal equipment. Signal 109 is read from signalling bit b (105). Signal 106 is read from signalling bit a(108). Signal 107 is set in ON-state if channel is ready to operate and transmit data to the network.

Error analysis
Buffering
The slips (+/) of the transmit and receive buffers can be controlled by the processor of the unit. The microprocessor can read the state information of the slips. When a slip (+/) has been detected, an alarm can be generated.
2.4.2
Incoming timing/data
The clock and data coming from the direction of the DTE can be monitored during transmission. If the clock is not detected within 30 ms or data is missing , Loss of incoming signal-alarm is activated and AIS is sent to DM2 bus.
2.4.3
Faults in DM 2 bus
If the DM 2 bus becomes faulty, the unit sends the AIS signal to the DTE and sets the handshake signals OFF.

Loops
The loops to line interface can be done as short (ITU-T X.150 3c) or long (ITU-T X.150 3b). During the interface loops signals to the internal 2M bus are in high impedance state. The loops are established within the Data Interface Circuit (DIC).

Introduction
Chapter 1 Introduction
The Data Unit is installed into a TM4 equipment cartridge. The Operating Manual for TM4 Construction Practice explains the connection of the central battery voltages and rack alarms to the cartridges, routing of signal cables, connection of groundings, as well as installation planning and work order. The data units are ready to operate after their installation into a cartridge and the connection of signal cables. The instructions for installation of the equipment into cartridges and cabling of signal interfaces are given below. Note Always use wrist grounding or other such protection when handling a plug-in unit removed from its package.

Equipping
The connectors of the cartridge motherboards and the back connectors of the units are standardized so that the voltages and rack alarm signals conveyed by them are always located in the same places. Due to this, no unit location in the cartridge is reserved for a particular set of equipment. The unit can be installed in any TM4 cartridge equipped with a MUX unit and it can be inserted in any unit location. The cartridge can also house other equipment of the Nokia ND equipment generation. A data unit takes one unit location (width 5 T) in a cartridge. Figure 2 shows an example of equipping: three data units have been mounted in a 20 T cartridge.

Signal interfaces
Figures 3, 4 and 5 present the pin configuration for all possible interface signals at different interfaces. The direction of the signals is implied with respect to the data unit (arrow towards circle is an incoming signal and vice versa). Figures 68 present a cabling example where the DTE is connected to the data unit with different timing alternatives. As regards the data and control signals, the data unit always operates like the DCE. The timing signals, however, can operate also like the DTE. If the data unit is connected to a DCE, the data and control signals must be crossed and the timing alternative selected shall be the codirectional (RS-449 and V.35); at the X.21 interface, the internal and the external timing are selectable. Table 1 is an example of the connection of data and control signals when the data unit is connected to the DTE and DCE.

Marking of cabling
Cables are to be marked so that it is later possible to see where they lead. The markings should specify the equipment and connectors concerned. The cabling information is also recorded on the marking card delivered with the equipment. Instructions regarding the marking can be found in the Operating Manual for the TM4 Construction Practice.

This means that with the normal polarity of the clock the delay due to the cable and the terminal equipment may be max. : Tdelay max = (504 ns / 2) (60 +30) ns or the delay must be min.: Tdelay min = (504 ns / 2) 60 ns + 40 ns = 232 ns =162 ns
In other words, the 114 clock needs to be inverted if the delays due to the cabling and the terminal equipment are in the range: (Tc / 2) (Td + Ts) Tdelay (Tc / 2) Tdmin + Th If the delay due to the terminal equipment has not been given, it is advisable to measure it with an oscilloscope, for example.

General
Operation of the Data Units (DIU) is controlled via the service interface of the MUX unit using the Service Terminal. Through this interface, equipment state and alarm data are read, controls and settings are given, loopbacks are set, etc. If the service interfaces have been connected into a bus and the buses have been further connected into a service network by means of the data channel, all equipment connected to the bus or network can be remote-controlled from one point using the Service Terminal or the Transmission Management System TMS (see the Operating Manual for the TMS Transmission Management System). Section Operation with Service Terminal of this book describes the service menus obtained from the equipment and their use. For the Service Terminal there is a separate Operating Manual. The data unit is ready to operate after its installation into a cartridge equipped with a MUX unit and the connection of signal cables. Before commissioning, however, the identifications and settings should be checked, required changes in the factory settings should be made, and the statistics and error counters should be reset. Commissioning measurements are not necessary.

Maintenance
Chapter 2 Maintenance
The equipment does not require scheduled maintenance. Maintenance is needed only when the equipment indicates with alarms that there is a fault. Accurate data concerning the equipment state and the nature of the fault are obtained via the Service Terminal. Additional data on the condition of the equipment and on signal quality are obtained from the measurements and statistics made by the equipment itself. Measurement results and statistics are read with the Service Terminal. The Service Terminal can also be used to carry out tests and set on loopbacks possibly required in fault location.

Performance measurements
Since the equipment itself collects data on signal quality and error occurrences and indicates faults by alarms, only few performance measurements carried out with separate measurement instruments are required. However, measurements can be performed if desired. The operating voltages can be measured and the result read with the Service Terminal. If the operating voltages deviate from the recommended values, it is advisable to have the equipment checked. The allowable range of variation for the voltages is 5 % from the nominal voltage.

General
Chapter 2 General
The data unit is controlled with the Service Terminal or Transmission Management System TMS (see the corresponding operating manuals). The Service Terminal or TMS can be used for setting the basic settings of the equipment and storing them into a non-volatile storage (replaces jumper settings), performing maintenance related functions, e.g. loopbacks, and reading identifications, statistics and other such information from the equipment.

equipment ID (e.g. DM 2 ABC) fault category (A, B, D, S or combination of these) control block indicating the fault fault type.
The equipment ID is set by the operator in the Identifications menu. The fault display is not related with just one unit, it concerns the entire equipment.
In a fault situation, Local alarm cancel cancels rack alarms A and B. As a reminder of cancelling, alarm D is given. Cancelling without a fault situation produces a B-alarm. Local alarm cancel concerns the entire equipment.

Fault display
The main unit collects the fault data from other units into a common fault storage. At the initialization stage, the main unit collects from each unit the fault related data: the faults that are active in the unit, their effect on the alarm outputs, the fault code related to each fault, the way the fault is indicated (colour of indicator), and the name of the control block. The main unit generates the response to the fault inquiry, the response containing the following information:
D D D
equipment ID (equipment name) fault status fault data: S faulty object S fault type (fault code). *02A (ABS) MUX-2M unit 1: S incoming 2M missing nx64k unit 3: S power supply fault
Example:
The equipment, named 02A, has alarms A, B and S active. The fault messages come from the equipment interface 1 control block (unit 1), the fault being that the incoming 2 Mbit/s signal is missing, and from the control block of the nx64k data unit (unit 3), the fault being a power supply fault. The nx64k data unit contains one control block and equipment interface.

The short interface loopback connects back the transmission coming from the DTE immediately after the line buffers. The long interface loopback connects back the transmission from before the buffers of the internal bus of the MUX. In equipment loopback, the output signal of the equipment is connected back to the equipment from before the line buffers. All options display the following menu:
0 Display loop state 1 Set loop on 2 Remove loop
Option 0 displays the state of the selected loopback on the channel. Response example:
Channel 1: Loop to MUX on
By option 1, the selected loop is set on for the selected channel. Selection of the option causes alarm B and a fault message on the loopback to the MUX to be given. If an interface loopback is set on, the AIS is sent to the MUX, and if an equipment loopback is set on, the AIS is sent to the DTE. Only one loopback for a channel can be on at a time. If the loopback to be set on is not enabled at the moment of setting, the following text will be displayed:
One loop already set. No other loops allowed.

20
DM2DU0340SEE1
The time slots are automatically selected from the given time slot or the next unallocated one onwards. As a result, a selected number of unallocated time slots, starting from the given one, will be allocated. If the number of unallocated time slots is not sufficient, the time slot allocation is not performed. In such a situation, the following message is given:
Number of free TSs from given starting TS is insufficient.
In such a case the time slots will not be allocated. The time slot 16 can be allocated both in manual and automatic selection if signalling has been set out of use in the DM 2-MUX unit. The allocation of time slots will succeed only if the channel is not in use. Option 2 (6,9,u,3,n,2,2 ) deallocates all time slots. The selection is enabled only if the channel is not in use.

Connection type
Connection type: 0 Display 1*RS-449 2 V.35 3 X.21
Option 0 displays the connection type. By option 1, the RS-449 interface is selected and by option 2 the V.35 interface. Both selections are followed by the following menu:
Clock selection: 1*Contradirectional 2 Codirectional
Option 1 is used for selecting the contradirectional clock. The transmit and receive sides then have their own individual clocks. Option 2 selects the codirectional clock, in which case the transmit side obtains an external clock but the receive side generates its clock inside the data interface.
When option 1 is selected, the clock of the X.21 interface is generated from the receive direction clock (115). Selection of option 2 causes it to be generated from the transmit direction clock (114). By option 3, the external clock (113) is selected in use.

Transmission rate
Transmission rate: 0 Display 1 Set trans. rate
Option 0 displays the transmission rate currently in use. Option 1 displays the menu:
Select trans. rate: (1...31) x 64 kbit/s
All transmission rate alternatives are selectable, irrespective of the number of time slots allocated. Only when an attempt is made to take the channel in use, is it checked whether the transmission rate and the number of the selected time slots correspond to each other and a fault message is generated if necessary.

Signalling TS selection
Signall. TS selection 0 Display 1 Set signall. TS 2 Remove signall. TS
Option 0 displays the signalling time slot. Option 1 displays the menu:
Select signall. TS: 1...31
The time slot whose signalling bits (in time slot 16) are used for transferring the signalling is selected here. The time slot selected must be one of the data time slots; if the selected time slot is not a data time slot, a fault message is displayed and the user will have to try again. Due to this, the user must first allocate the data time slots and only after that the signalling time slot. If the signalling time slot is not changed after the data time slots are changed and, consequently, the signalling time slot is not one of the data time slots, a fault message is displayed when an attempt is made to take the channel in use. Option 2 (6,9,u,3,n,5,2 ) deallocates the signalling time slot. All handshake signals going to the DTE are then set ON. Although the signalling time slot has been deallocated, the handshake signals can be forced. The forced controls will not, however, be enabled before the signalling time slot is taken into use again.

Forced signalling
Select signal: 1 RS 2 CS 3 DM 4 TR 5 RR
Option 0 displays the state of the selected signal and option 1 sets it in nonforced state, in which case controls directed to the signal are transferred unchanged through the data interface. Option 2 displays the menu:
Set forced state: 1 Force signal ON 2 Force signal OFF
Option 1 sets the signal in forced ON state and option 2 in forced OFF state. When the forced control is on, other controls directed to the signal are ignored and the signal is forwarded in the forced state. The forced controls remain valid until the signal is set to nonforced state again.

Signal 105 (RS) is transferred to the local end as signal 106 (CS). Signal 108 (TR) is not transferred and channel associated signaling (CAS) bit a is set off. Signalling state of signalling bit a can be altered forcing signal 108 by selection 6,9,u,3,n,,9,4,2. By option 1, the state of signal 105 is made to pass into signal 106 in 4 ms. By option 2, the respective delay is set to 28 ms. Option 2 108>106 sets it in nonforced state, in which case controls directed to the signal 108 (TR) are transferred unchanged through the data interface to the farend as signal 106 (CS).

Under this menu it is possible to select the buffer whose alarm limit is to be displayed or set. Both options display the menu:
Slip limit: 0 Display 1 Set limit
Option 0 displays the alarm limit currently in use and option 1 displays the menu for setting the alarm limit:
Set limit slips/min.: 1...255 slips/min.
This menu is used to set a slip alarm limit for a buffer selected earlier. If this limit is exceeded, a fault message is sent to the MUX. Depending on the buffer whose overflow causes the alarm, the AIS (if enabled) is sent to the DTE or the MUX. The AIS is sent to the DTE when there is an over-/underflow in the transmit buffer and to the MUX when there is an over-/underflow in the receive buffer. A B-alarm is also given.

Read/load settings
Read/load Settings: 0 Display setup ID 1 Read from unit 2,* Load to unit (* = <INV> <DATA>)
Option 0 displays the unit setup ID which differs according to type designation. The setup ID is used when the interchangeability of the unit settings is defined. The settings can be copied between only such units that have the same ID. By option 1, the unit settings are read into the Service Terminal/TMS buffer. By selecting 2,* the settings contained in the buffer are saved to a unit, provided that the setup ID and the length of settings are the same as the corresponding old settings in the unit. Selection 2,* must be made immediately after selection 1.

Option 0 displays the current settings for the synchronization block. When the synchronization block is in use, the information displayed includes the 1st priority clock channel, synchronization rate, and clock channel currently in use. The synchronization rate and clock channel information are continuously updated. If both of these pieces of information are zero, the external clock is missing from both channels. When the synchronization is out of use, the text Not in use is displayed. Option 2 deactivates the synchronization block. In such a case, the 2.048 MHz clock signal at the connector P3 is disconnected. Selection of option 1 produces a new menu:
Give 1st prior. channel (1 or 2)
The channel of the 1st priority is selected here. The selected channel will also be the 1st priority synchronization source for the 2.048 MHz clock to be generated. The remaining channel will have a lower priority and, consequently, it will be switched on only if the clock with higher priority is missing or if its quality is poor. When the channel has been selected, the program checks the connection type of the channels and displays an error message Channel settings not OK! if the clock selected for the channels is neither codirectional nor external. When the clocks are in order, the transmission rates of the channels are read and the transmission rate and connection information of the channel with the highest priority are saved to the synchronization block. After this the synchronization block is enabled to start up. Now, the 2.048 MHz clock signal received from the connector P3 is synchronized with the n x 64 kHz clock signal. If the channel with the highest priority fails, the information of the channel with the lower priority are saved to the synchronization block, but if the clock with the higher priority is recovered, its information is restored in the block. Note When synchronization is used, the transmission rate and connection type shall be set first and they cannot be changed after the synchronization block has been taken into use. If an attempt to modify the settings is made, the text Sync. block is in use is displayed. If changes are to be made, the synchronization must be taken from use.
