Thanksgiving Tradition with a Twist - Each year Wentworth Elementary School holds their Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner. Prior to this event, Principal Keith Charpentier challenges the whole school to collect at least 250 food items to be donated to the Warren/Wentworth Food Pantry. In exchange for this collection, he treats the entire school to a pizza party. This year to add to the schools donation, King Arthur Flour of Norwich, VT came to the school and put on a presentation to students in grades 4-7 on the art of bread-making. In return, each student was given the ingredients to make two loaves of bread; one for their family to enjoy and the other to be donated to the food pantry. In addition to the 250 nonperishables, WES donated 28 loaves of homemade bread to go with the Thanksgiving supplies the food pantry handed out on Friday, Nov. 16th. Carly Merluzzi; 7th grader, said It was a lot of fun making the bread; I do it at home with my Mom. Principal Charpentier would like to publicly thank Amy Driscoll of King Arthur Flour, the families of the children who participated in this Life Skills Program, as well as all the community members that donated food items for the pantry. -NCN Courtesy Photos

Warren Fiction Writer Releases New Novel____________________

Continued from page A5 kind of novel, but its still somewhat unusual). The odd thing is that his book begins like a classic British novel and then, halfway through, Wilkin breaks cover and writes it like non-fiction, like a memoir. When asked to explain, Wilkin says that such a structure is a kind of homage to his hero. Bunnys plunge into obscurity in the late thirties, after reaching worldwide fame and marrying a famous actress, was something he chose himself, giving up his tennis career--just when he was finally the favorite to win Wimbledon--to work for an obscure interfaith NGO called Moral Re-Armament. Wilkin says he wants to bring the reader this experience of conversion, reaching out for a new level of honesty, for thats what Bunny Austin did and thats what he hoped for from his loved ones, with what Wilkin calls dramatically mixed results. The book is available at amazon.com. Mr. Wilkin has taught writing at Phillips Academy for thirty-three years, meeting Bunny Austin as a result of a Fulbright Exchange Year teaching at Dulwich College, London. His wife Ellie runs the Black Iris Art Studio in Warren, NH.

The Adventures of Tom & Atticus

Thank you. They are perhaps the two most powerful words in the English language when you connect them. And I find myself saying those words again and again lately, especially while remembering fittingly enough our Thanksgiving Day hike. Every time we climb a mountain I understand it could turn into a savory memory, and most hikes are memorable in some way or another, but whenever we make it to Franconia Ridge and step out of the trees above treeline with the world beneath us and heaven not just above us, but by our sides as well, theres an even greater chance it will be a day to remember. We havent been on the ridge for a year and a half and Ive missed it. The entire night beforehand, knowing wed be up there soon enough, I felt like a kid on Christmas Eve. You see, I often avoid popular routes because of the crowds and we seek them out only on off times when people are busy with their lives. Midweek in winter is a fine time to go. So is night.

Lyme Disease Cookbook Wins Second Award_______________

Mother and daughter team Gail Piazza and Laura Piazza have been honored as an AwardWinning Finalist in the Health: General category of The 2012 USA Best Book Awards for their book Recipes for Repair: A Lyme Disease Cookbook. This comes on the heels of being awarded the bronze medal in the fourth annual Living Now Book Awards in the Cooking/Natural category in September. Jeffrey Keen, President and CEO of USA Book News, said this years contest yielded over 1,500 entries from mainstream and independent publishers. Our success begins with the enthusiastic participation of authors and publishers and continues with our distinguished panel of industry judges who bring to the table their extensive editorial, PR, marketing, and design expertise, states Keen in regard to this years contest. author of The Lyme Disease Solution. Dr. Singletons book had an entire chapter devoted to nutrition, and until that point, I didnt realize what an important role nutrition had in the healing process, says Sunapee resident Laura Piazza, co-author of Recipes for Repair. I contacted Dr. Singleton to see if he had ever considered publishing a cookbook specific to his diet. Readers and patients would tell me that the biggest impact from my book was the Lyme Inflammation Diet, so when Laura wrote to me proposing a book of recipes specific to the diet I was really excited about the idea, says Dr. Singleton. Im very proud to have my name associated with such a quality piece of work.

My mission was to create recipes that allow not only Lyme patients but anyone desiring good health the freedom to eat enjoyable and nutritious meals and its very rewarding to know that this mission has been accomplished. Yakima Valley growers shipped eighty bales of hops westward in 1876. Acreage increased the following decade and once the railroad reached the valley the future success of hop farming was almost assured. In 1876 the principal hop farms were in the Ahtanum Creek Valley. In the early 1890's more farms were established making Yakima County the principal hop-growing area in the state.

Any time you hear soccer mom rhetoric about our working families, or self-congratulatory platitudes to the effect that Democrats care, look behind the voice and take a look at what the hands are actually doing. In a freed market without the state to do the capitalists bidding corporate capitalism would wither like a garden slug with salt on its back. The state works for the capitalists, not for you. Inspiring Words for You!
Dear Friends, There is just no distance that God's amazing love can't cover! No matter what we've done or are doing. His love is so much greater than that!!! We just cannot measure His love! God just wants us to know and understand how much His incredible love covers!!! I pray today, LORD, that hearts are opened to this amazing love that You are! If you're care is broken, you bring it to the shop to be fixed. If your washing machine doesn't work correctly, you call the technician for the job. When your computer malfunctions, you call the person who can repair it! God is the repairer of our lives and our souls. He is our creator! You wouldn't call upon the computer tech to fix your washing machine, and vice versa?! So it is important to make the right call for the right person for the job! In Jeremiah 29:11, Jesus says, For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. God is the Author and Finisher of our lives. He's the man for the job! He alone knows what you need. God love you all...

Talking About Our Schools

Nancy Tuite Director of Special Education SAU #23 Many parents have questions about the services that are provided for our special education students. We are required by law to provide services necessary for students to access their education. Services that are typically needed for students are resource room support in areas of deficit or in-class support in some cases. We provide a variety of related services if the needs arise including speech language, occupational therapy and physical therapy services. Some students have the need of counseling by the school psychologist or guidance counselor. If the needs of students are severe in the areas of functional life skills including health and personal care, behaviors, severe communication deficits or inclusion in the mainstream is limited because of safety or mobility, then a para educator may be needed for all or part of the day. We are very careful when these decisions are made because this limits social skills development, development of self-regulation behaviors and can cause the student to become dependent on adult assistance. The addition of any of these services on an individual education plan of a student are meant to be temporary and are provided to assist the student in becoming an independent adult. We have two alternative schools within SAU #23 for students having difficulty in the mainstream because of behaviors. French Pond School serves students in grades 4-8 and King Street School serves students in grades 9-12. King Street School can also help students with credit recovery and can prevent students from dropping out of school. If you have a concern about a child a referral can be made at any time. Referral forms can be obtained at SAU #23 Special Needs Office or at any of our schools.

"What we can do is look forward and race guys as hard and clean as we possibly can, and this is a way to get some positive things going because this year has been real up and down." Brad Keselowski's championship was no surprise. He entered the race with a 20-point edge and took no chances. Jimmie Johnson's crew botched his shot on pit road and, thanks to a mechanical failure, didn't even finish second in the points. Bowyer did. Trevor Bayne's Ford grazed the wall twice in a span of about 10 laps, but those were just among the many footnotes drawing scant attention. The first two caution flags were for debris. In fact, it wasn't until lap 153 that Nationwide Series champ Ricky Stenhouse Jr. actually hit a wall with enough impact to slow the entire field. Then "poof" went the Chase. First, on lap 213, Johnson's crew failed him, leaving off a lugnut on the left-rear tire and earning a penalty. A few laps later, Johnson was back on pit road, but not to change tires. He coasted the famously reliable No. 48 down pit road because it was the way to the garage.

Littleton Food Co-op Partners With Littleton Area Senior Center__________________________________

The Littleton Food Co-op is happy to have the Littleton Area Senior Center as its December Partner of the Month. As the Co-ops partner, the Senior Center will receive all donations collected in the stores checkout canisters as well as $1 for every hand-tossed pizza sold Friday evenings in the Co-op Deli through the month. The Littleton Area Senior Center is a crucial part of our community and provides invaluable services to our seniors and others, said Co-op Manager Ed King. Were excited to partner with the Senior Center this month and help raise funds and spread the word about the good work they do. Founded more than 35 years ago, the Littleton Area Senior Center is one of eight centers under the non-profit umbrella of the Grafton County Senior Citizens Council, Inc. The Senior Center provides numerous services, from a daily congregate lunch and home delivered meals, to transportation to essential appointments, and a variety of fitness classes and craft groups. The congregate lunch, put on Monday through Friday, is attended by some 75 people each day. The home delivered meals program delivers daily meals to about 100 homebound seniors in the nine towns served by the Senior Center: Littleton, Bethlehem, Franconia, Sugar Hill, Easton, Lisbon, Landaff, Lyman, and North Monroe. Food is a lot of what we do, but its not all that we do, said Senior Center Director Kate Vaughan. Were a very busy senior center, and we have a lot going on daily. The socialization has a lot to do with why people show up here on a regular basis. Most events and programs at the Senior Center are open to the public. Senior Center events in December include a Christmas concert with pianist Stephen Cote on Dec. 11 and Christmas music with Dick Alberini and Trevor Hardy Dec. 12, with both events immediately after lunch, and the annual Christmas dinner Dec. 18. Senior Center staff and volunteers will visit the Co-op during Pizza Night Dec. 7 to share information about programs and activities at the center. For more information about the Littleton Area Senior Center or to volunteer, please call Kate Vaughan at (603) 444-6050. Member-owned Littleton Consumer Cooperative Society, Inc. strives to serve the North Country of New Hampshire and Northeast Kingdom of Vermont by providing a broad range of high quality food products, offered at a fair price, with outstanding service. Located at the intersection of Cottage Street and Route 302 (exit 41 off I-93), the Littleton Food Co-op is open daily, 8 a.m.-8 p.m. All are welcome to shop the Co-op, member or not. Adventures in Homesteading
Fruit for the Future
The cabins not quite donebut the woodstove is in, the pipes through the roof, and no snow came in this last week. Were continuing to work on indoor insulation and trim as we eagerly anticipate emptying our overpacked shed and moving in with finality. For this week, however, Ill take a reprieve from cabin tales to focus on the rest of the homestead. While the cold and snow of winter are (hopefully) imminent, these dark evenings are great for planning the work of the coming spring and summer. In particular, were thinking about the perennial stock to be planted once spring returns. While annual vegetable plants are essential for a full and varied diet here at Cosauke, perennials are also important. Rootstock planted in the present will yield remarkable benefits

for decades and generations to come. Perennials are a boon the more mature the trees and shrubs, the more prolific they become yet the less work they require! You cant quite say that for annuals. Fortuitously, as autumn descended, a Fedco tree catalog arrived in the mailbox. This was the first cue. Since then, Ryan and I have had more than a month to decide on which trees, shrubs, and plants we want to purchase, and in which nook on the property we wish to plant them. Now, as the urgency for cabin construction is winding down, we can refocus ourselves on the thrill of planting for the future. So, as the afternoon wanes the sun sets behind the hill about 3:15pm Ryan and I slowly perambulate our clearings, pacing out distances and using animated gestures to sculpt our orchard dreams.

I like apples, Ryan likes pears; we both agree on peaches. More blueberries seems like an obvious choice (the wild raspberries and blackberries are already prolific). Lavender is selected for the herb garden, Ryan plans a cranberry patch, and I think about mulberries. As we walk about we imagine a few apple trees between the garden and the cabin, and a pair of peaches to welcome visitors from the wooded path to garden clearing. Pears will fit neatly past the sumac, and the additional blueberries can augment the existing patch past the hemlock where we like to take lunch. The cranberry patch is still taking shape, while I put mulberries off until next year when more space is cleared and the stump sprouts are tamed. And were not the only ones in the hubbub of making plans. Our neighbors and your neighbors are thinking ahead, too. The investment you put into perennials is like little else. What a way to steward for the future! Visit Fedcos website if youd like to peruse their offerings, or check out other sources such as Elmores Nursery, Oikos, & St. Lawrence Nurseries. The Grafton County Conservation District offers a perennial plant sale as well, with information available online. You can also be in touch with us at Cosauke regarding trees, tree orders, tree care, and perennial garden development. Opportunities and information abound! Invest in trees and celebrate the rewards for years to come. Did you ever wonder why we say, "I smell a rat" when we sense that something is amiss? The phrase dates back to a time before effective means of pest control, when it was not uncommon for a home to be infested by rodents.
