Corpsman Nurse, Ruth recalled the first moments Juan Dominguez awoke from his coma after stepping on a roadside bomb in Afghanistan that ripped off his legs and his right arm according to John Brian Losh who wrote of his conversation with her. She recounted that his first words to her were, Dont be sad for me Maam, I would do it again for my country. On October 23, 2010, when Lance Cpl. Juan Dominguez slipped down a small embankment while out on patrol and landed on a buried bomb, the explosion could be heard for miles, according to an Associated Press article. He said, It had to be a 30 to 40 pounder. His legs were severed above the knee, and his right arm was mangled and could not be saved. Juan was chosen by The Tunnel To Towers Foundation and the Gary Sinise Foundation to be the recipient of a Building for Americas Bravest Home. We were asked on February 1, 2012 to participate in the construction of a customized Smart Home for Juan & his family. Without hesitation we committed to donate 100% of the cost of the HVAC system. The special needs now required by Juan demanded a complete redesign of the standard heating & cooling system. These changes increased the overall cost by more than double. With the help of our suppliers Bryant Manufacturing, Material Supply Inc. & others we were able to make that happen. On September 11, 2012 Juan and his family were presented with the keys their new Standard Pacific Home in Temecula. We were honored to take part in providing one of Americas heros a home where he and his family can live in complete comfort knowing that his country appreciates the sacrifice he has made. Reindeer Cookies 3/4 Cup Peanut Butter 1 1/4 Cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/2 cup shortening 3 tablespoons milk 1 tablespoon vanilla 1 egg 1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 3/4 teaspoon baking soda 3/4 teaspoon salt Chocolate-covered mini pretzels Mini brown M&Ms Regular-sized red M&Ms Combine brown sugar, peanut butter, shortening, milk, and vanilla in large bowl. Beat at medium speed until well blended. Add egg; beat until just blended. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt. Add to creamed mixture at low speed. Mix just until blended. Form dough into 1-inch balls. To make reindeer-shaped cookies, pinch the bottom of the ball slightly to form a point, then gently flatten with your hand. Space cookies about 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet and bake for 7 to 8 minutes, until set or just beginning to brown. Remove from oven and immediately (and gently) press two mini pretzels into the tops of the cookies for the reindeers antlers. Press two mini brown M&Ms in for the eyes and one red M&M for the nose. Allow to cool 2 minutes on the baking sheet and then transfer to a wire rack or paper towel to cool completely. *Makes about 40 reindeer cookies.
