Bennett Lane Winery has built a solid reputation for having the friendliest tasting room in the wine country. The winery and vineyard sit snuggled at the top of the Napa Valley in Calistoga and hold a welcoming charm with their water fountains, lined cypress trees and perennial flower beds at the entrance. The tasting room is friendly, not only because of its experienced staff, but for its warm and cozy dcor. Sunflowers lighten up the room, overlooking their open spaced picnic gardens while you sample their small-lot production Cabernet Sauvignon vintages. The owners, Randy and Lisa Lynch purchased this beautiful property only nine years ago and have become the talk of the town in just a short period of time. With a focus on Cabernet Sauvignon, they have gone on to produce award-winning wines, such as their lush textured red wine varietal called Maximus, composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. The current release 2008 Maximus Red Feasting Wine is being hailed as the best deal in the valley and was awarded 94 points in Wine Enthusiast. According to Randy Lynch, Our goal is to make wines of outstanding quality year after year, he says. We make every effort to use only the finest fruit and bring it to fruition in the bottle through meticulous winemaking. The winery has garnered an impressive thirtyfour 90+ point scores from Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast and Robert Parkers Wine Advocate in just seven vintages. With these impressive scores, Bennett Lanes knowledgeable staff is proud to share two exquisite tasting options aimed at pleasing the wine beginner to the ultimate Cabernet Collector. Their flagship $15 flight buys four tastes of Bennett Lanes fine wines, the Chardonnay, the Maximus Red Feasting Wine blend, and two vintages of their acclaimed Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. In addition, Bennett Lane is offering their Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon flight for $40 per person. This tasting includes a sample of the highly rated 2006 and 2008 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, and their single-vineyard Estate Lynch Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. We really try to be the friendliest room in the valley, a place where people can feel welcomed to try new wines with non-intimidating knowledge from our staff, says Stefanie Longton, General Manager of Bennett Lane Winery. Its a real treat visiting Bennett Lane Winery, a must see destination for wine lovers everywhere!

Affairs of the Vine Wine Shootouts ... Distinctly Different Wine Competitions
11th Annual pinot Noir Shootout & 7th Cabernet Shootout are under Way
Distinctly different wine competitions, Affairs of the Vine Wine Shootouts are comprehensive and focused tastings of varietal wines. The Pinot Noir Shootout, celebrating its 11th year, focuses on Pinot Noir, Blanc de Noirs and other Pinot Noir-based sparkling wines. The Cabernet Shootout is concentrating on Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Blends for the 7th time. The Pinot Noir and Cabernet Shootout boast incredibly diverse tasting panels comprised of more than 70 wine industry professionals from varying disciplines. The wines submitted to the competitions are tasted over a threemonth period. Just 32 wines are tasted per day in the prelims and finals, allowing the judges to be completely immersed, focused and fair to the wines. Palate fatigue is not a factor in the tastings. Wines are tasted completely blind without reference to appellation, vintage or price. Each wine is judged and reviewed on its own merit. All wines are tasted by at least two tasting panels before the finals. The educational and engaging, consumer-oriented, follow-up events, The Pinot Noir Summit (March 2, 2013), The Cabernet Shootout Challenge (January 26, 2013) and Romancing the Rhones (July 13, 2013) allow consumers to taste the top wines and pit their palates against the professional judging panel. The attendees are involved in the process of judging the wines from their perspective: a most memorable and influential experience. For more information, go to affairsofthevine.com.

v. SAttui WiNERY
Go and enjoy the Napa Valley youre looking for!
BY JOSH STEIN
Open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 1111 White Lane, Saint Helena CA 94574 (707) 963-7774 | www.vsattui.com
Bottom line: avoid the pretense and go up to V. Sattui, south of St. Helena, to be treated right and to taste some of the finest winery-only releases in the Valley without attitude or pretension, and its that very sense that the customer experience matters most that will have you return again and again. Something strange has happened as the Valley has grown up; sometimes, the producers seem to have forgotten how Napa became Napa Valley well, V. Sattui, one of the originators of the modern wine country experience, hasnt made that mistake. They always overdeliver. Were not the only ones who have noticed, by the way; for the fourth time, the Monterey Wine Competition named them Winery of the Year as has the Critics Challenge and for the second year in a row, the SF Bay Guardian has named them Best Winery in Northern California. Yes, this 125-year-old winery is well known for good wines at good prices, but thats not what inspires such loyalty for the winery and its all-winery-only releases. Its that theyve never forgotten where theyve come from or what truly matters in the wine business. The winery itself is named after owner Dario Sattuis pioneering San Francisco vintner great-grandfather Vittorio Sattui, who founded the enterprise as St. Helena Wine Cellars on then-Montgomery Street, now-Columbus Avenue in 1885. In 1899, the winery relocated to the Mission District as V. Sattui Wine Co. The winery closed for production in 1921 because of Prohibition, but Dario, remembering his childhood amongst the barrels
26
and tanks of the old underground cellar, refounded the winery in St. Helena in 1975, intent upon a wine experience modeled on a small European village, where visitors would feel encouraged to stay and feel part of wine country and its great wines without pretense or large wallets. As Vittorio often proclaimed, There is nothing like St. Helena grapes, and as folks say today, there is nothing like V. Sattui anywhere else in the Napa Valley. Why? For starters, the winery produces more than forty different wines, ranging from vineyard-designate and reserve Cabernet, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Zinfandel bottlings; to a range of Chardonnays, Rieslings, and Sauvignon Blancs; as well as three ross; dessert wines including Angelica, madeira, Muscat, and port; Italianinspired releases of Sangiovese and grappa; and older releases available nowhere else, so there is always something for anyone desiring a particular wine or style. Equally, the tasting fees are more than fair given the modern Valley, reflecting a philosophy that wine is for everyone. There are also, depending on the day, four or five different ways to taste: including two-and-a-half acres of shaded picnic grounds with no charge or reservations needed for picnicking and an extensive in-house deli and marketplace, entirely unique to the Valley, with barbecue and more than two hundred cheeses from which to choose. Group activities for small or large parties can be arranged by appointment; the winery is well known for never failing to please at such gatherings. And in line with this consumer-focused approach is the lack of anything but word-of-mouth to spread the news. Dario proudly remarks, To this day, we spend almost no money to advertise. And thirty-five thousand annual case buyers and five thousand Wine-of-the-Month Club members cant all be off course, right? How many other wineries anywhere on the planet can boast that level of loyal following without one bottle of distribution? V. Sattui pioneered this direct sales approach, making sure their efforts go into wines consumers want. No outside distribution means the ability to produce lots of different options without regards for what the corporate giants have dictated must be on store shelves. Darios philosophy is pretty straightforward, another rarity in todays world: Ive always tried to make the best product I could, sell it at a fair price, and let the product speak for itself. Well, that they do: more than a dozen current releases have been rated 90 points or higher, and the 2008 Paradiso was recently named Best American Bordeaux Blend at the Mainly Meritage International Wine Competition. Go now and enjoy and I bet youll be back again!
Come and experience the history and pastoral setting with picnic grounds, a bocce court and a horse shoe pit.

This sparkling Pinot Noir has a richness, intensity of flavor and brilliant red color rarely found in a sparkling wine. www.schugwinery.com

WCtW: If you were to visit just one winery, which would you choose and why? RS: Many of our guests at the Ritz-Carlton San Francisco are looking for the ultimate experience in the Wine Country. One of the options we like to suggest is a private tour and tasting at the Kenzo Estate. The combination of the spectacular natural setting, the prestigious vintages, famous name winemakers and the superb hospitality make this an ideal and refined destination. We suggest that our guests book a seated tasting on the patio with the specially selected food paring which matches the wines with signature dishes from Thomas Kellers Bouchon Restaurant another famous name in the Wine Country. WCtW: Which winery has your favorite cave/ cellar tour? RS: Most guests love cave tours and they really stimulate the senses! One of my favorites would be the Del Dotto Venetian Estate Winery. The caves are a work of art with textured stone walls, elaborate chandeliers made of Murano glass, and silver candelabras flickering down the barrel lined corridor. For a dramatic setting this one is incomparable. WCtW: Whats the best wine country picnic spot? RS: One of the most charming family run wineries around is Sullivan Vineyards in Rutherford. With advance arrangements you can enjoy a lovely day of exquisite food and wine on the outdoor patio outside of the Sullivan home. If you have already been to the big names in the wine country this experience will have you feeling like you are part of the family at this very special boutique winery.
WCtW: Describe the perfect day in wine country. tW: Begin at Downtown Bakery in Healdsburg for
breakfast, their sticky buns and croissants are a must. A nice walk around town afterward is always refreshing; start with the perimeter of the square which is filled with boutique shops, antique stores, tasting rooms and art galleries. I would then head into Russian River Valley to explore some Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Copain on Eastside Road is a must-do for Pinot Noir and Syrah, then Iron Horse for bubbles. In downtown Sebastopol my new favorite watering hole is Claypool Cellars. The tasting room is set in an old train car in the middle of Gravenstein Station. Continue on to the coast to Bodega Head for the stunning cliff side view. After stopping at a local kite shop and taking it to play at Goat Rock, I would round the coastal experience with dinner at Rivers End Restaurant in Jenner right around sunset time. To end the evening, get a nightcap at the hip Spoonbar in downtown Healdsburg. WCtW: Whats the best wine country picnic spot? tW: Gustufson by Lake Sonoma is one of my absolute favorites. This hidden gem winery has breathtaking views and for the architectural enthusiast, the house has a Frank Lloyd Wright style to it. They also offer fantastic wines at a great price. On your way up stop at the Historic Dry Creek General Store for lunch provisions. Gustufson is worth the drive but best to start here first then work your way down the valley to other fun spots such as Bella, Preston, Lambert Bridge and Seghesio. done in a very nice atmosphere with food accompanying the wine which is one of the best Cabernet Sauvignon in the valley.
Remember: Please sip responsibly! Plan to taste at no more than three wineries based on these recommendations.

3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 teaspoon minced fresh rosemary 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon cayenne
DIRECTIONS
1/2 cup walnuts Seven 7-inch flour tortillas 6 ounces brie 1 Golden Delicious apple
Preheat oven to 350F. Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter with the rosemary, salt and cayenne. Combine with the walnuts and toss well. Arrange the nuts in one layer on a cookie sheet and bake for 10 minutes. Let them cool and then chop them coarsely. Turn the oven down to 200F. Cut ninety-six 1-1/2 inch rounds out of the tortillas using a cookie cutter. Remove the rind from the brie. Peel and coarsely grate the apple. Spoon 1/2 teaspoon of the cheese on top of 48 tortilla rounds. Top with 1/2 teaspoon of the apple, followed by 1/2 teaspoon chopped nuts, and put another tortilla round on top to make a sandwich. Heat 1 tablespoon of the remaining butter in a large nonstick pan over moderate heat until hot. Add half the quesadillas and cook for 1 to 2 minutes on each side, or until golden. Transfer them to a baking sheet and keep them warm in the oven while you cook the remaining quesadillas in the remaining butter. Serve hot.

A Romantic Rendezvous for Your Sweetheart and You
A first encounter with the Candlelight Inn is a bit like love at first sight! As you approach the beautifully maintained and landscaped Tudor Mansion built as a residence in 1929 it appears to straddle Easum Drive, a modest residential area. The street not far from Napas Town Center ends as you park in the welcoming front courtyard. Right here, in the bustling epicenter of everything that makes the wine country so desirable, the luxurious ten-room inn sits on its own private, one-acre, secluded park. It is bordered by Napa Creek and nestled beneath towering redwoods. Here, a spacious pool/cabana is surrounded by meticulously landscaped flowering shrubs, bushes and rock gardens. Noticeable sounds are birds and rustling leaves. Originally designed for an active familys enjoyment, Candlelight Inn is now a private retreat for discriminating visitors to the wine country. Many guests, who were smitten by that first impression, now return year after year to relax and renew their enjoyment of all the region offers. On each visit, there is more to do. In recent years, Napa has become a hub for worldrenowned chefs, and each year brings more restaurant openings. At the inn, guests can enjoy complimentary wine and hors doeuvres as well as snacks and drinks at all hours. A three-course breakfast featuring local and seasonal foods is served each morning. Most rooms have a deck or balcony, a two-person marble Jacuzzi tub and a fireplace. All have air conditioning, TV, telephone and wireless internet access. Each is unique and tastefully designed. An on-site concierge provides personalized dining and wine country touring recommendations. The concierge also helps guide you to the numerous attractions of wine country hiking and bicycling, kayaking, bird watching, cultural attractions, balloon rides and spa services. The inn has received numerous awards and been featured in USA Weekend and National Geographic Traveler. The Candlelight Inn is located at 1045 Easum Drive, Napa. For reservations and to hear more about our packages, call 1-800-624-0395 or visit www.candlelightinn.com.

REAtA WiNERY

REATA WINERY
Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 1 Kirkland Ranch Road, Napa CA 94558 (707) 254-8673 | www.reatawines.com
Reata Winery is a stunning California coastal lodge located at the mouth of the Napa Valley. From the large, panoramic tasting room windows you can see Mount Tamalpias at the bottom of Marin County. The land was once part of General Vallejos Suscol Rancho and served as the largest cattle ranch in Napa. The land is still farmed with vineyards, cattle, sheep and bees. Owners Bryan Gordon and Alyssa OHare established Reata Winery in 2011 and continue to make improvements to the facility and landscaping. Reatas 300 acres of terraced vineyards enjoys a more moderate, Mediterranean climate than their northern Napa neighbors. The incredible winery building features a state-of-the-art production facility for making wine and a beautifully appointed visitors center that pays homage to the history of California and incorporates a wine bar, a full banquet room with seating for up to 200 guests, and a unique observation gallery that allows guests to take in Reatas winemaking process in action. Reata is the Spanish word for lariat and just as the strands of a reata are woven together by a master craftsman, so too are the Reata wines that artfully combine the different elements of the winemakers craft to capture the true California expression of each of their award-winning varietals. Reata specializes in producing high-quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and a limited selection of other cool-climate wines such as Viognier. Reata sources its grapes from some of the finest vineyards in Napa and Sonoma, as well as its own estate vineyards. Winemaker Nori Nakamura focuses on making limited quantities of the best wine possible, regardless of terroir. Reatas Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir recently received 92 points from Wine Enthusiast and several other wines have received superior accolades at competitions around the country. I want to make wines that speak to people, says Nori Nakamura. Wine is created by nature, not by humans, and you must listen to the wine. All I can do is spend as much time as possible to understand it. This is my approach to winemaking and hopefully Reata wines bring joy to those who drink them. Executive Chef Karen Chiappone is producing a unique menu of sophisticated comfort food with incredible farm fresh tastes to complement the award-winning wines. Selections include truffled mac and cheese, Reata short ribs and sweet potato souffl, accompanied by the Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and other select varietals. Food pairings are offered Thursday through Sunday. In addition, there are wine and cheese pairings served daily. Enjoy a variety of artisanal cheeses, including local selections with fig preserve and nut cracker made by Chef Karen, paired perfectly with a selection of the Reata wines. Visitors can truly make a day of it at Reata. The property harkens back to a more simple time in California with incredible vistas in every direction. Oh, and here is one other interesting bit of trivia: Reata was the name of the iconic California ranch made famous in the film Giant that starred James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor. Great wines, great food and a little bit of trivia, too!

An urban wine tasting destination
BY DENISE OLLIFFE
Their slogan is Where you discover wine one sip at a time, and Cellars of Sonoma is just that a laid back, urban wine tasting destination in the heart of Wine Countrys big city Santa Rosa. Situated in a vintage building in downtowns Historic Railroad Square District, the establishment is part tasting room, part wine bar and a whole lot of fun. Cellars of Sonoma is the only tasting room in downtown Santa Rosa of its kind. Enthusiastic owner Scott Jordan says, Were a big part of the redevelopment of Old Railroad Square. Were the pioneering wine bar and tasting room downtown (having opened in 2009). Its a cooperative tasting room, highlighting nine boutique vintners: Amorosa Bella, Bonneau Wines, DuNah Vineyard and Winery, Gann Family Cellars, James Family Cellars, Joseph Jewell Wines, La Sirena, Ousterhout Wine & Vineyard, and TR Elliott Winery. It showcases more than 60 diverse limited-edition wines on the menu. Tasters can savor and be educated on these somewhat rare, boutique wines not mass produced a real treat.
Ready to serve
From the moment patrons arrive, theyre immediately greeted by friendly staff, eager to share information on fine wines being served. Scott says, We have a four-second rule. We promise that youll be greeted within four seconds, regardless of how busy the room is. He adds, Our staff is very well trained on the wines. Education is a big part of what we do. Three main hotels are within a short stroll: Hyatt Vineyard Creek Hotel, Hotel La Rose and the Marriott Courtyard. Visitors can stop in to ask the helpful staff for wine tasting tour maps and tips on tucked away wineries theyd never find on their own. They also give pointers on what to pack for the wine road such as water, a map and snacks for picnicking (as most wineries dont provide food).
52
theyre plugged-in
Keeping pace with social media trends, Scott Jordan hosts an engaging, TV Tuesday Live webcast from the tasting room, reaching out to viewers across the country (www.cellarsofsonoma.com). Each week, he interviews local wine industry professionals from 6 to 7 p.m. Scotts hosted over 180 consecutive shows, and hasnt missed a week since the shows inception, even airing on-location webcasts. Scott encourages viewers to sip along, and send in questions during the webcasts for an interactive exchange. Facebook and Twitter users might want to follow Cellars of Sonoma to find out the talent line-up each week, monthly highlighted wines, and more. Cellars of Sonoma is located at 133 Fourth Street. The tasting room is open daily. Stop by to relax after a long day, or bring out-oftowners for a friendly, low-key introduction to great wine.

Artist Maeve Croghan Returns to the Charles Creek Vineyard Tasting Room & Gallery
An exhibition of the new works by Northern California Expressionist Nature Painter Maeve Croghan is now on display at the Charles Creek Vineyard Tasting Room and Gallery in downtown Sonoma. Interpretations of natural landscapes and vineyard scenes are the dominant themes. The show will run through January 31st, 2013. The show is on view daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the public is invited to sip award-winning Charles Creek vintages while enjoying the colorful paintings. Maeves oil paintings are begun outdoors where she intensely observes the environment, becoming immersed in it as she paints. The works are finished in the studio from her memory and personal interpretation. Maeve has been the recipient of
numerous prestigious juried awards and her works are in prominent collections all over the U.S. and Europe. Her paintings have also appeared in 4 editions of Art of Northern California and American Art Collector as well as the new juried art book Studio Visit. Specializing in high quality Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from great vineyard sources in the Sonoma and Napa counties Charles Creek Vineyard produces wines that are food friendly, fruit driven, and easily paired with meals. The winery tasting room is conveniently situated in a charming 1890s era storefront on the historic Sonoma Plaza. In addition to wine tasting and sales, the tasting room also provides space to show the work of local artists. The Charles Creek Vineyard Tasting Room and Gallery, open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., is located at 483 First St. West, on the historic Plaza in downtown Sonoma. For more information, call (707) 935-3848 or email alan@charlescreek.com.
The Birthplace of California Wine Taste with The Count Beautiful Picnic Areas
58
The wine growers in Sonoma County are ecstatic about the harvest of 2012, and Ted Coleman, winemaker for Little Vineyards Family Winery, is no exception. This years harvest was exceptional, says Coleman. The quality of the fruit was outstanding, and we yielded an excellent crop load, thanks to a consistent growing season with not many temperature spikes, and coupled with good hang time. In 2002, Coleman was assistant winemaker at Gallo Sonoma in the Dry Creek Valley but began moonlighting with Joan and Rich Little of Little Vineyards Family Winery in Glen Ellen. The connection was made easy since Ted is Joans younger brother. In that first year, Coleman created two wines, a Zinfandel from the estates old vines, and a Syrah-Cabernet named Resonance, which won a gold medal at the Sonoma Country Harvest Fair. Knocking it out of the park the first time at bat was a great experience for the young winemaker, but it would be another four years before he could depart the Gallo winery for a full time winemaker position at Little Vineyards. We made about 375 cases the first couple of years, and I knew we would have to get a little bit bigger before I would be able to join forces with Joan and Rich, said Coleman. I was able to come on board full time in 2008. Ted Coleman grew up in Modesto, California, one of eight children. As he got older, he and his siblings would pick grapes for extra money during harvest. Throughout his high school and college years, he worked part time and during summers at the nearby Gallo winery in Modesto, doing all kinds of odd jobs from working in the cellar, to helping out in the labs and eventually, working with the winemakers. After high school graduation, he enrolled in the Fresno State Enology and Viticulture program. I liked the operation side of the wines business, and I found the lab to be one of the most interesting parts of the business, said Coleman. I enjoy learning the science behind the process. All of the Little Vineyards wines are estate grown from the 18 acres on the property that are being farmed. While most of the fruit goes toward the annual 1,600 cases made by Little Vineyards, the remaining fruit is sold to other wineries. A second label, called Band Blend, was soon created. Some of the estate fruit plus other Sonoma Valley vineyard sources are used in the Band Blend wines, which are approachable and affordable wines created for everyday enjoyment and entertaining. Coleman still makes the Zinfandel from the old vines that existed on the land for years before Joan and Rich Little purchased the property in 1995. Other varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir were pulled out. We are right in the middle of the Sonoma Valley, says Coleman, which some people refer to as the Banana Belt of the valley. We dont benefit from the fog near San Pablo Bay that pretty much sticks in the Carneros region, making our area so much warmer, and with that warmer climate it is more conducive to growing Cabernet Sauvignon than Pinot Noir or
Chardonnay. They planted more Zinfandel and added Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as small blocks of Cabernet Franc, Petite Syrah and Petite Verdot. We decided to create wines that we enjoy drinking, said Coleman. And while everything they currently make is all red wine, they did release an award winning Rose in 2012 and are looking at producing a white wine down the road. Additionally, two new wines are about to be added to the Little Vineyards tasting menu, a 2010 Port-style wine that is made from Petite Syrah and a Late Harvest Zinfandel that is made with 100% estate grown fruit and available in half bottles. We are constantly fine tuning our existing programs, maximizing our extraction, and improving the wines that we already create, said Coleman.

MAYO FAMILY RESERVE ROOM Open Thursday through Monday from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Final seating at 4:45 p.m; the cost is $35 Reservations are recommended especially for their weekend hours (707) 833-5504 | www.mayofamilywinery.com
As the leaves fall and cool breezes set in, the Mayo Family Reserve Room heats up! Executive Chef Clayton Lewis has just released his new Harvest/Holiday menu and it is one that shouldnt be missed. His impressive style, attention to detail and perfect pairings make for a spectacular afternoon. With every new menu he is able to showcase the rich beauty of the Mayo Family Reserve Wines. Come for the food, sip some wine and enjoy your seven course seated tasting. The first trio of pairings starts with two white wines and one red and really defines the autumn season. 2010 Pinot Gris Courtneys Cuvee is paired with an heirloom carrot and feta salad with arugula vinaigrette. The flavor in the carrots provides a solid base for this crisp wine while the spice in the vinaigrette softens the citrus notes. Next up is the 2009 Reserve Chardonnay, Laurel Hill Vineyard paired with butter poached halibut cheek, grilled pumpkin and green apple and Meyer lemon gelee. This wine is so buttery and lively and the tartness in the gelee rounds out the oak found in the wine while the pumpkin provides earthiness and depth. The final pairing in this first set is the 2007 Reserve Merlot, Merediths Cuvee, Los Chamizal Vineyards paired with a sort of saganaki as Chef Clayton calls it. This golden tomato cake is layered with a light, delicate shrimp mousse and is set on a silky layer of caper emulsion which provides subtle salt and acidity to complement the blueberry and chocolate notes found in the wine. The second trio of pairings brings us into the holiday season with intense flavors and bolder wines. 2007 Reserve Meritage, Olivers Twist, Napa Valley is paired with a shoulder of lamb and autumn vegetables. This wine is full bodied and complex and marries brilliantly with the braised lamb. The fifth course is the 2OO7 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Random Ridge Vineyards paired with grilled New York strip with Romano beans and sweet peppers with a shitake demi-glace. The vanilla notes in the wine highlight the shitake mushrooms and sweet peppers and the tenderness of the Romano beans added a nice textural component to the dish. The last pairing in this trio is the 2009 Reserve Zinfandel, Ricci Vineyards, Russian River Valley with an achiote rabbit rillette. The achiote spice brought out the peppery and jammy notes in the Zinfandel and was the perfect finish to the savory pairings. Lastly, you have to end on a sweet note and the final seventh course was a 2OO9 Late Harvest Gewurztraminer, Kunde Ranch Vineyard, Sonoma Valley paired with an orange cinnamon roll. Chef Clayton used the sugar in the wine to make it perfect for holiday brunch. The cinnamon roll topped with orange marmalade was not particularly sweet so this wine was a perfect match. This Harvest/Holiday Tasting Menu will be available through the end of the year.

top Santa Cruz Mountains vintners Share their Stories and Wine
The Surf City Vintners group of wineries announced its Winter 2012/2013 semester of Surf City Wine University, a series of wine appreciation classes that give wine lovers the opportunity to taste and learn more about wine from a group of master vintners in an informal, enjoyable winery setting. The winter semester started December 2 with a class on sparkling wines with Barry Jackson of Equinox Champagne Cellars just in time for the holidays and New Years. Classes continue with one class a month into April, 2013, and include: Wine Tasting 101 with Michael Sones of Sones Cellars; Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir; Iberian Wines with Jeff Emery of Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard / Quinta Cruz; Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir, with Joe Miller of Rexford Winery; and Chardonnay Styles with Steve Storrs of Storrs Winery. Classes are held Sundays, from noon to 2 p.m. at the instructor winemakers tasting room/winery. Wine lovers can learn more about wine from a group of vintners who combined have more than 150 years of winemaking experience. The winemakers will share their passion and knowledge in an informal and fun environment in their own wineries and tasting rooms, and attendees will receive a diploma in Sip-ology from Surf City University. Classes can be taken individually or as a group. Those taking all classes receive a tasting card for complimentary tastings at the Surf City Vintners wineries valued at over $60. All classes include wine tasting. March 10, 2013: Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir: On the World Stage, with Joe Miller, Rexford Winery Explore the Pinot Noirs of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and discover why this region produces Pinot Noirs that are among the worlds best. Explore the influence of location on the qualities and characteristics of Pinot Noir, sample Pinots from different vineyards, and compare our local Pinots with a French Burgundy. Joe Miller taught UCSC Extension classes on the wines of Burgundy for many years and will help us better understand the terroir of the Santa Cruz Mountains and the Pinots it produces.
