the proper spinner (coarse or fine) according to consi tency of liquid to be sprayed.
CAUTION--Many
emerge in fine spray that is highly combustible and potentially damo erous if there is not sufficient ventilation to dispel the fumes. Therefore, observe these rules:
NEVER SMOKE WHILE SPRAYING. flAME OR FIRE. TAKE PROPER STOVES AND HEATERS. NEVER SPRAY PAINT NEAR AN OPEN PRECAUTIONS WITH PILOT LIGHTS IN ROOMS
Coarse
Spinner
Fine Spinner
Coarse spinners are for heavy-bodied paints, fine spinners are for light-bodied paints and other liquids. Put .spinner in position with veins facing away from sprayer. Replace nozzle cap, making sure it is screwed tight to prevent leaking. Scalloped edge makes it easy to tighten nozzle cap by hand.
PREPARING MATERIAL FOR SPRAYING-Thoroughly mix the material, adding thinner of the type indicated on the manufacturer's label. Outside house paint, flat wall paint, etc., usually require thinning in the ratio of 1 part thinner to 2'or 3 parts paint. Thinning of enamels is usually in the ratio of 1 part thinner to 3 to 5 parts of enamel. Lacquers generally require more thinning than enamels, and may ~__~B(fme-tHfies neea a ra 0 as Ign as 2 parts thmnet to 1 part .~ lacquer. No matter what type of material isto be sprayed, . it is better. to start with less thinning and increase as spray'. ing tests indicate. Too much thinning will cause the paint to' run. Be sure the material to be sprayed is clean and free from "skin" or lumps which may clog the sprayer. Strain the material through cheese cloth or a piece of 60 mesh screen as shown.
.____
sprayer is adjusted for proper atomization of fluid passing through the nozzle by turning the spray adjuster on top of the sprayer to right 01' left until a good spray pattern and uniform droplet size are obtained. Turning the knob regulates the amount of paint pumped up to the nozzle. rhus It IS easy to ge a good spray with the right volume of paint. If you cannot obtain a full', even spray with small and uniform droplets, the paint probably needs more thinning.

TECHNIQUE-Spray at a uniform distance of 12" from the work. Keep the sprayer at right angles to the work by flexing the wrist at the end of each stroke, Never allow a stiffly held wrist to "arc" the stroke. Arcing causes poor distribution of materialtoo inuch at the center of each stroke. SPRAYING

Always keep the sprayer in motion. If held in one spot the material will pile up, and an uneven coating will result.
Learn to "trigger" the sprayer to start and stop the material properly. This means the sprayer must be moving at the beginning of the stroke before the trigger is pulled. Likewise, the trigger must be released before the sprayer stops moving at the end of a stroke. This "feathers" or blends each stroke with the next. Overlap each stroke on a
distribute the solution. Some insecticides may be "potentially dangerous if sprayed without adequate ventilation. Be sure to follow safety rules in "Caution" paragraph above.

flat surface just enough to secure an 'even coating. Always start at the top of the work and spray across the face In consecutive sweeps. Spray just enough material to cover the surface. An excess of material 'will cause tuns. Two or more light coats are always better than one heavy coat. Adjust sprayer for less paint flow until you are familiar with spray painting. After you get the "knack" of it you will be able to paint at top speed without runs. Experiment before you undertake an important spraying job. "Test spray" on cardboard, wood scraps, or other waste material until you get the "feel" of the spraying process.
H.OW TO CLEAN YOUR SPRAYER;_PREVENT TROUBLESOME CLOGGING BY CLEANING THE SPRAYER IMMEDIATELY AND CAREFUI..LY AFTER USE. Dried paint within the nozzle or sprayer passages is sure to cause trouble later. Use the right solvent for cleaning ... the same solvent used for thinning. Lacquer thinners cannot be used to clean out paint, varnish, or enamel, f'or example. Consult can label for right solvent. Wash out jar with clean solvent, then splty clean solvent through the outlet tube and nozzle. A final cleaning with Kerosene will assure good lubrication of the parts. Remove nozzle cap and spinner, wash in small pan of clean solvent, and, replace. The electrical mechanism which supplies power to operate the sprayer is completely enclosed in the upper pad: of the housing, and need never be touched.
PROTECTING SURFACES NOT TO BE SPRAYED-Use a cardboard shield to catch overspray at edges of work and to protect surfaces not to be painted. Newspaper held in place with masking tape may also be used.
SPRAYING INSECTICIDES-Either water or oil base insecticides can be used. Mix solution according to directions on container;-tnen spray as directed on cloth;" rugs, leave-s, branches, etc: Ordinarily, the best way to spray this type of liquid is to have the sprayer set to produce as fin'e a mist as possible. Keep the sprayer in constant motion "16 completely
IF SPRAYER FAILS TO OPERATE PROPERLY - If the pump becomes clogged due to paint "skin" or other foreign matter lodging in the pump mechanism, first inspect bottom of pump and remove any paint film you see with a toothpick or match. Then flush with solvent. If this fails to eliminate the trouble, unscrew the hexagonal check valve at bottom of pump assembly, drop out ball check, ball stop and packing ring spring and wash clean with solvent. If paint has been allowed to harden in the outlet tube, clear tube by inserting a piece offlexible wire and moving it back and forth. Then flush with solvent until passages are clear. If clogging takes place at the nozzle, unscrew the nozzle cap, take out the spin-ner, and wash In solvent; Most- clogging 'is -due-either to failure to strain paint before using, or failure to dean sprayer properly after use: -Keep your sprayer clean! Do not use wire, nails, drills.retc., to clean nozzle cap:
