Hi Jazz Guitar Fans,

The 3rd night in a succession of club/players nights provided yet another extremely satisfactory evening, which covered a broad cross-section of styles, approaches and combinations of musicians. As ever, the redoubtable Tom Prior opened the evening with an impromptu rendition of Manoir De Mes Rves (aka Djangos Castle) which unintentionally provided a fantastic soundscape and friendly ambience for people to gradually drift in by. There were three of us in the room when he started and it was virtually full by the time he finished! Tom was then joined by Martin Chung, whose jazz playing has come on in leaps and bounds since he found his jazz legs with HJGS. The played All the Things You Are with all the ease and panache of seasoned veterans. Next up were the IDLE G(u)ITS (a play on words in more ways than one) with honorary guits Adrian and Robin dutifully reading their parts as if theyd had them for weeks. The GUITS were formed by Darren Dutson-Bromley who writes most of the arrangements and rehearses them on a regular basis. They played effective ensemble arrangements of Pennies from Heaven and Honeysuckle Rose. Guitar ensembles can sound wonderful, when properly rehearsed, and Darrens group are a tribute to his talents as a teacher, player and arranger. One of the guits lost his virginity that night, he had never improvised before! Well done, a tribute to everyone involved, Im sure well be hearing much more of the old gits, sorry Idle Guits! That ball of infectious jazz guitar enthusiasm, Ken Steers, then treated us to solo renditions of Loverman, Cheek to Cheek and a medley which included a blues, Sweet Lorraine and Satin Doll amongst others. Ken always provides an assured, mature and confident performance, many hints of Joe Pass, who must by osmosis, be one of Kens primary heroes. Furthering the Joe Pass connection was Kens newly acquired Epiphone Emperor, Joe Pass model, quite hard to find nowadays. It sounded wonderful and enabled Ken to produce the most consistently even sound he has had at HJGS meetings. Nice one Ken! Martin then joined Ken for Out of Nowhere and a blues. Its great to see Martin taking every opportunity he can find to play some jazz. Obviously a talented performer to watch out for!

Jade America Harris, a new face to some but known about, supported and promoted, wherever possible, by Adrian (who stumbled upon her remarkable talent in a real ale folk session!) and Ian, made the first of what is hoped might become a regular spot for HJGS. Totally unrehearsed, she sang Lullaby of Birdland and Cry me a River, which stuck pretty close to the Julie London/Barney Kessel version, these were in totally alien keys, removing some of the patina from some of those rarely used frets. Thunderous applause, everyone loved her and were moved by the quality and passion of here voice. Just as the interplay between Jade, Adrian and Ian appeared telepathic, another remarkable telepathic duo got up. Trefor Owen and Andy Hulme. Their finely honed duet work mixes just the right amount of arranged ensemble and looser improvised segments, enabling the players to, as it were, show their wares. Distinctly different, yet at times consistently similar, this is a special meeting of minds and must be one of most highly regarded guitar duos on the scene today. Their programme was varied and well balanced including East of the Sun, How About You and Willow Weep for Me. The night was so full that the Owen/Hulme duo spot had to be the last as the bar staff were busy stacking chairs and sweeping up around us. Following a very fruitful committee meeting, which involved serious discussion, drinking and playing in roughly equal amounts, a strategy for the next few months was panned out. Jazz Guitar Summer School Monday August 27th-Friday August 31st 2012 Blueprint Studios Salford. Join us to improve your skills in a relaxed and inspiring environment! The jazz guitar summer school will run for five days from 11am -5pm each day and focus on a different aspect of guitar playing daily. Meetings
The first Tuesday of the month at The Head of Steam : Huddersfield Railway Station Howard Alden has emailed to say how much he enjoyed playing for HJGS and asked if he can come back and do it again next year!!

As previously mentioned, in the last newsletter, we are going to re instate the idea of a selected tune sent out on a regular basis. These will be played, as a group following a short discourse (analysis of harmony, structure, tonal centres etc) by a HJGS member. The first of these will be, Afternoon in Paris, presented by Darren at the Oct meeting. Of course members are free to play it at an earlier meet and are encouraged to look at it as soon as possible. Arian has promised to provide another tune/discourse on his return from his summer commitments. Remember the society needs YOUR views and input so, if you want to provide a short introduction/discourse for a tune yourself or make any suggestions for a tune, please speak to a committee member. We have already had some other interesting ideas put forward which we are looking into. YOUR ideas are both vital and welcome. It is YOUR society and the committee is there entirely on YOUR behalf. Please, please get involved if you can!

This guitar was set up by the luthier at HobGoblin in Leeds. A new mahogany bridge was made to increase intonation of sound at higher resonances. The guitar has a mike fitted along with a tail piece jack pin. This would enable a higher quality amplification system to be fitted if required. The guitar is basically unmarked and comes complete with fitted hard case . This is a beautiful instrument and plays withe a lovely action and a very loud mellow tone. I'm selling simply and sadly because I am elderly and arthritus makes playing this guitar difficult. I am now having to play my manouche on my Peerless Renaissance.. These guitars come up for sale rarely and this is a beauty.
