Raquel Fors Comp I, 10:00-10:50 Rodgers, Fall 2012 Research Paper Proposal

1. Subject: The subject for my research paper is interpersonal relationships. 2. Research Topic: The narrower topic Ive chosen is teenage relationships, especially how the way a teenager was raised influences his decisions and social life. I also would like to delve into whether technology and the media influence adolescent psychology. 3. Interest: This topic interests me because its an area with which Ive always been fascinated, and reading the Goon Squad inspired me to think about it further. Also, being a teenager constantly exposed to modern technology, I cant help but wonder if these new media outlets might be more harmful than they are helpful. 4. Documentation Style: MLA 5. Audience: My intended audience is my English composition instructor Mrs. Rodgers and the other students in my class. 6. Leading Questions: Do parents affect their kids social and psychological lives? If so, how do they affect their kids, and how much do they affect their kids? Does technology help or hurt teen psychological development? 7. Approach: For my paper on teenage interpersonal relationships, Im going to compare very strict to more lenient parenting styles and their influences on children as they mature and come into adolescence. I also hope to learn and show how teenagers use and view technology, and how technology plays into their lives. 8. Working thesis: Over-parenting drives adolescents to misbehave and can result in social or emotional issues; meanwhile, the use of modern media technology has a negative impact on teen behavior and development.

Fors, p. 2 9. Research strategy: I plan on researching teen psychology and childhood development to give myself an understanding of what a normal childhood should be like, and also how the parents methods of raising their child molds the childs future growth. Then I want to research how much media technology is used in a teens daily life, how it affects teens psychologically, and I want to determine as surely as I can whether that influence is good or bad. I want to use mostly books and peer-reviewed journal articles as my sources. 10. Sources: Casey, Tristan, Elisabeth Wilson-Evered.
