REIKI II
DR. USUI
There are many ways to access Reiki energy. A very old and time-tested technique for engaging the
flow of Universal Energy while one is out and about performing daily activities is using the sense of
hearing. The act of listening is a way of releasing the mind from the steady stream of thoughts that
block subtle energy and true awareness. Listening keeps us present in the here and now and opens
the doorway for energy flow.
To enter the flow of Reiki through the sense doorway of hearing one listens for the silence that
surrounds and permeates the sounds in ones daily environment. Listening for silence amongst the
active noises does on a surface level appear to be a crazy thing to do. Yet, what is actually happening
is that the practitioner is letting down his or her mental guard that restricts energy flow from coming in.
Listening for the silent breaks in the cacophony of noises is listening for the passive opposite of noise
or in other words that, which gives birth to noise-to all creation, which is Universal Energy. It works!
Though at first glance this method many seem almost too simple and easily overlooked, it works quite
well and is a refreshing departure from the overly touted use of energy symbols.
Patterning symbols can become a distraction or even an obstacle to fully accessing Universal Energy.
It is very easy to become stuck on the tool (energy symbol) rather than opening and relaxing into the
flow of Reiki energy. Our physical bodies naturally accept ever-increasing levels of Universal energy
over time as we let go of our thoughts and let the energy move through us. This way of listening in
many ways represents a natural symbol of our inner connection to Wholeness.
Listening for the silence of Universal Energy and entering the flow of Reiki happens immediately. One
may be surprised on just how simple and yet profound this method is. The practitioner may start to feel
an internal circulation and build up of Chi energy within the body and/or a sense of well being. The
energy is perfectly attuned for each individual and is not distorted in any way as can be the case using
energy symbols. Enjoy and blessings.
REIKI II
The Reiki II attunement measurably increases the amount of healing energy, and the attunement
focuses upon emotional, mental and karmic healing in the person who receives it. After the
attunement, old emotions, unhealed former situations, past lives, and negative mental patterns
resurface to be fully healed at last. This can take as long as six months to complete, and though not
always comfortable the process is positive and necessary.
Healing with Reiki II adds considerable power to direct sessions. It also adds the methods and tools
for doing healing with someone not physically present - you can do this by applying distance healing.
In Reiki II, three of the Reiki symbols are introduced and used consciously for the first time. With Reiki
I, the symbols are already in the healer's aura and they emerge unconsciously through their hands
when they heal. Reiki II begins directing their energies. It also offers preliminary information on
channelling the energy required to pass attunements as a Reiki III.

EMPOWERMENTS
JAPANESE REIKI
Reiju is Usui’s original way, a procedure that enables the recipient to channel Reiki.
It is believed that it comes from Tendai Buddhism. This is where Hatsu Rei Ho and other Japanese
Reiki techniques seem to have their roots in.
In Japanese approach to Reiki practice, students would gather every single week and practice various
Reiki techniques.
At the end of the gathering, during meditation, Reiki Master would give Reiju to every student as a
mean of initiating further progress on Reiki path. It is said that Reiju was also used to “attune” (to use
western term) students into higher levels of Reiki channeling.
In Japan language, Reiju means: “accepting / giving energy”.
Reiju connects the student to Reiki source, strengthens this connection, and thus enables more deep
and strong Reiki flow. It is student that has most important role in his development. Reiju enhances
Reiki channel, but student must keep it open by practicing various Reiki techniques, i.e. Hatsu Rei Ho.
Reiju helps the student’s progress in every aspect of his life, by enhancing energy level in student’s
bodies. This is also achieved by daily Reiki practice.
Giving (on Master’s end) and receiving (on student’s end) Reiju empowerments every week or even
daily, is very good opportunity to develop intuition and sensitivity to the energy, and above all, to
enable one to make small but important steps towards Satori - Enlightenment.
Reiju can be used for self-empowerment also. Just like our western attunement processes can.
Self-Attunement: On daily basis, do a general attunement at first and then specific attunements latter
on (each symbol to corresponding chakra).

Mudras
Mudras are known in Indian Spiritual practices and the Oriental martial arts as ways of developing and
increasing our inner strength. Depending on your modality, this may be spiritual power, or it may be
your ki.
Reiki first introduced the practice of using mudras into Reiki - with the emphasis firmly on those, which
derive from Japanese culture. They serve to help the Reiki practitioner strengthen their ki energy and
to allow it to flow more freely, as well as speeding development of intuitive abilities.
A cursory study of the subject will show you that there are dozens (if not hundreds) of known mudras,
and to a large extent this is an area, which in Reiki terms is still ripe for exploration.
The basic theory of mudras is that each finger corresponds with an element:
5
Thumb connected with the Little Finger
Earth is the final Element in this sequence. This mudra has a very grounding effect, and can be used
to bring you or your Healee back down to earth. Earth is a "slow" Element, and this mudra can be
quite subtle in its' effect.
These mudra positions are not the ones normally associated with Reiki. In general, only three are
taught: Sha , Rin and Jin (also known as Kai or Saimenjitsu)
__________________________________________
#1 - SHA MUDRA
On Ha Ya Bai Shira Ma Ta Ya So Wa Ka
Sha is believed to correspond with the Reiki symbol Dai Ko Myo. It was used to send distant
healing - either from a few inches or from greater distances - before a session of close or
hands-on healing when making this mudra, meditate on the Divine Reiki Source and on the
cleansing Element of Fire.
This Mudra is called Sha in Japanese. It is also used in Taoism, some Tibetan arts, and in Ninjutsu.
Sha is used for Healing of Self and Others, and to develop and strengthen the inner channel. It was
said that those that mastered the Inner connections using Sha would develop an inner power and
would no longer succumb to viruses and other afflictions.
In this mudra the index fingers and thumbs are extended while the other fingers are interlocked. Using
Sha is an excellent mudra to use when meditating. When doing any Meditations you can use the Sha
Mudra as you meditate. Additionally, it can be used when doing healings. Before you actually begin
doing the healing, place the hands in Sha, connect to the Reiki energy, and focus on the compassion
of the source and let the energy flow into the hands. Then separate the palms and begin healing.
The extended fingers are used to gather up the energy that is within the body and to direct that
energy, through the fingers, in a focused though to affect the healing of a particular are of the body.
6
Kanji Position #1 - SHA
Note the position of the thumbs, they are not crossed. This was used for spiritual healing. It was
also used to cause distant healing. It was taught that this was done before any type of Reiki healing
session. It was thought to bring spiritual energy into the channels in the body.
This position is called SHA in other systems. It is used to balance the energy in the body, and develop
the heavenly chi and spiritual power. It was used to heal self and others. This was done in
conjunction with a meditation that focused on seeing the bodily fire and connecting to the fire of the
universe. This would seem analogous to the Reiki Dai Ko Mio symbol (Master Symbol) in application
of bringing in the spiritual light and healing.
7
#2 - RIN MUDRA
Rin is held to correspond with Cho Ku Rei - it is used primarily to help the Healer connect with
the Divine Reiki Source (hence the association with Cho Ku Rei) but also to achieve energetic and
emotional balance. Using Rin before a Reiki session is felt to make the healing more powerful.
Position #2 is the fingers interlaced with the two middle fingers extended and tips touching.
8
Position #2 is the fingers interlaced with the two middle fingers extended and tips touching.
Note the position of the thumbs, which are crossed. This was used to increase the efficacy of
the hands on healing session, and to promote balance. It was thought to help connect to the
power and energy and allow it to flow more readily in the channels.
This position is called RIN in other systems. Rin is to help connect to the power or energy of
the universe (cosmic energy) and increase the power in the body. It is interesting that in Raku
Kai that this position was chosen for this. It would seemingly be analogous to the intent of the
Cho Ku Rei symbol in function.
Use the Rin mudra when you need additional Power, Strength of Mind and Strength of Body. Use
whenever you need physical, mental, and/or emotional strength.
Once you have formed the Kanji, raise your hands and arms high above your
head, with your eyes closed and third fingers pointing upwards toward the
heavens.
Slowly lower your arms until your hands are in front of your heart center.
As you do this you will experience the White Light coming down and into all
of your bodies through your Crown Chakra.
9
#3 - JIN / KAI MUDRA
Jin / Kai is believed to help you to connect with your Healee's subconscious mind - in this sense, it
could be held to correspond with Sei Hei Ki or with Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen. Samurai warriors used it
before they entered into combat to enable them to read and understand their opponent's thoughts. In
Reiki terms, being able to communicate with your Healee's subconscious will enable you to focus the
Reiki more appropriately to their needs.
Interlace all your fingers together and press the palms together. This mudra is called Kai or Jin. Use
this mudra to help clear your mind and to still your thoughts. When performed correctly, you will be
able to sense all that surrounds you, including the ability to sense danger.
10
Kanji III is for increasing your Intuitive abilities.
Position #3 is the fingers folded inward and all interconnecting. The thumbs cross and also are
inward to the palm. It was described in Raku Kai as bringing knowing. It facilitates a connection to the
subconscious mind of the client and helps correct imbalances in the client. This position is called JIN
in other systems. It was thought to help you Know the thoughts of others. It increased the empathic
abilities and increased the ability to feel the thoughts of others. At the highest level one could sense
others thoughts and feelings as well as hide your own thoughts, feeling and intent. It is unclear why
this would have been included in Raku Kai as there is no similarity to any of the Reiki Symbols or
practices.
Kai
Use this mudra to help clear your mind and to still your thoughts. When
performed correctly, you will be able to sense all that surrounds you, including
the ability to sense danger.

SCANNING METHOD
This is the scanning method developed by Vince Amador for Karuna Ki Reiki. It incorporates a hand
position or Mudra and uses the third eye to help develop the intuition to find areas that need treating.
KAI MUDRA
It is only when our minds are clear and we have stilled our thoughts that we can sense clearly all
around us. Kai is an activation of the psychic sense, which allows us to see beyond sight. In this
mudra the fingers are all interlocked.
SCANNING TECHNIQUE:
1. To use Kai in scanning first place your hands into the Kai mudra, close your eyes, relax for a
moment and take several deep breaths.
2. Focus on the Ultimate Source of Compassion.
3. Breath in the energy into hands and then into the Dan Tien. Let it expand through the body.
4. Next, direct the energy into the hands. Do this by breathing in the energy into the Dan Tien and
then exhale the energy out through the hands, radiating the compassionate energy outward
around you.
5. When the hands are filled with the energy, bring the connected hands up to the level of the third
eye and place the knuckles of the thumb against the third eye. Focus the energy on the third
eye.
6. Continue to breath through the hands.
7. Visualize the (Zonar, then the Gnosa – these are the Tera Mai and Karuna Reiki symbols)
symbol, and then any other of the Reiki Symbols that you may intuit.
8. Allow any sensations to be "seen" or "felt".
9. You will feel the sensation of the third eye active. It will feel like a tingling in the center of the
forehead or a pressure behind the forehead.
10. When you are ready, begin separate the hands and begin scanning with the palms as
described above in the "hand scanning" section.
11. Continue to focus on the third eye area. Impressions are "seen" but not so much seen with the
eyes as they are felt or experienced.
12. This method also helps develop the third eye area and intuition in all areas of your life, as well
as to focus on the compassionate source. This helps us stay focused in compassion toward all.
12
SHA MEDITATION
Created by - Vince Amador, the founder and originator of Karuna Ki Reiki.
Consistent practice clears and focuses the mind and helps one to cultivate compassion toward
all beings.
Sha is used for healing self and others. Using this Mudra in the meditation below helps to increase
within us health, vitality and healing strength.
The following exercise can help to fully develop the use of Sha. To do this:
1. First place your hands in the Sha Mudra. This activity helps link the pathways within the body.
By forming the Sha Mudra with the hands the appropriate pathways of energy are linked within
the body. This brings health and knowing. The activity helps increase your inner strength,
expands your channel, expand the mind and the ability to sense self and others and to remove
fear.
2. Breathe in through the nose and out of the nose. Empty your mind by focusing
only on the breathing. If that is difficult, count slowly to seven on the inhalation
and to seven on the exhalation. If other thoughts arise, pay them no mind and let
them slip away.
3. Focus within and on the flow of energy within the body and on the spirit. Deep
within us burns a Fire, behind the hara and it is the area of Personal Chi.
Deep within us burns a Fire, behind the hara and it is the area of Personal Chi. This meditation
replenishes our personal chi with the compassionate loving energy of Reiki and strengthens us,
reduces stress and anxiety, and increases our ability to channel the energy.
4. Focus on the Hara, or slightly behind it. Some people see or visualize this as see it as a ball of
light, fire or heat.
5. Visualize the ball of fire deep within you, behind the Hara.
6. Connect to the Reiki energy. This activity is to focus on the fire and to make it burn brighter and
warmer and to increase its radiance throughout the body.
7. As you breathe in the breath, the loving light energy (Use Reiki) comes in energy comes in
through the crown (top of head).
8. See the energy move down to behind the Hara area and see it fill the area making the light
there grow, and brighten. You will feel energized.
9. When you feel energized and filled, allow the energy to expand outwards and through your
body spreading ever outward further and further to the top of the head, the tips of the toes and
the tips of the fingers. See it spread through all the organs.
10. Focus on the Mudra, and hold it between the sternum and the hara.
11. Breath in through the hands and into the hara, and on the exhale from the hara out through the
hands.
12. Do this for 10 minutes or so.
13. When done, focus the mind back on the Hara. Allow your consciousness to return to normal.
Stand, and shake the hands three times, and then the feet three times.
Once you master this breathing technique, you can do this activity any time by using the
mudra and just concentrating on breathing and increasing the light. Done regularly it
strengthens the body and mind, and increases the vitality of the body. Like with Reiki, you will
notice that the hands will be very hot when doing this and after. This can be done with any of
the other Kuji-in hand positions.

THE REIKI SYMBOL
14
REIKI II USUI SYMBOLS
The Reiki symbols originated in Chinese Taoism where they are still taught today. Usui Sensei used
them as part of the spiritual training he was presenting. They each represent a facet of your being that
can be awakened by you - Focus, Harmony, Connection (to other aspects of you through time and
space) and Empowerment (connecting to a higher level of your being). They were originally referred
to as just symbol, #1, 2, 3 or 4, and were taught in a from of kata or meditative exercise, only used in
class. No attunement to them was given. The Japanese version of the special word or kotoba for
each symbol is different than the original Chinese.
The symbols were not applied to others, although Dr. Hayashi seemed to experiment with this. The
original Reiki society - URR Gakkai - dropped the use of the symbol itself and simply created a mantra
(modified from the original kotoba or word) to help focus on this aspect of Reiki. They taught that the
symbols are part of each Reiki Reiju (attunement) experienced - right from Shoden - and thus their
own Reiju did not include any of the symbols. As well, their healing work does not include symbols - it
seems that the effects of each are expected to be automatically presented to a recipient, if it is called
for. Hence in a technique like Sei Heki Chiryo-ho, you will notice that the symbol is not drawn or
called upon. Again, it seems Dr. Hayashi was the one to make use of these in individual reiju or
attunements, and in healing work.
The "symbols" were first introduced by Usui-sensei as a form of training wheels for some students.
They say that Sensei discovered that some students were unable to accept that the energies they
received beyond the Reiki energy could be transmitted just by will. And so to assist one student with
distant Reiki, he had the person focus on an old Buddhist mantra, which Dr. Hayashi came to teach as
the Connection energy. This eventually spread to the other 3 main energies shared by Sensei as
well. Sensei obviously drew on his previous research in order to provide an appropriate mantra or
symbol.
Even training wheels can get in the way after awhile as you improve your abilities, for they may come
to inhibit your progress. (e.g. how fast can you travel or turn corners?) He acknowledges that in the
west, many may have sought to have bigger and more impressive training wheels, although he
recognizes the use and importance of personal symbols.
In Dr. Hayashi's more structured form of Reiki, Usui Shiki Ryoho (Usui Method of Healing), the use of
the symbols seemed to become solidified into a standard part of the training, and if at any point they
were later de-emphasised, this was not passed on by Mrs. Takata in the west. Thus the symbols grew
in importance along side the energy they convey.
Some students are taught that symbols are sacred. People are sacred not symbols. The symbols
(which act as yantras or a visual focus) and their mantras or names (which act as an audio focus) are
simply aids to concentrate on when you wish to connect and work with specific vibrations or
frequencies of energy from within. Once the student knows the energy they wish to connect to, simply
thinking of the energy creates the connection or awareness. This can be true of Reiki symbols.
Since the traditional symbols have been misrepresented over and over, perhaps it is time to teach
them to all in their original form. It is quite beneficial to experience these within the framework of an
attunement, as the Reiki teacher helps you to pay attention to each specific aspect of them. So in a
way it can short cut a longer approach of trying to sense them on your own.
15
REIKI TRADITIONAL SYMBOLS
Symbols from - Dr. Chuujiro, who received them from Usui Sensei.
In Japan, these symbols are found elsewhere in their culture and spiritual work; although they would
not have the connection to the individual energies that we acquire when we invoke them. The
symbols, especially the last 2 (Connection, Empowerment) are simply Japanese phrases, and would
not be thought of as "symbols" to the average Japanese person.
The symbols originate within Tendai Buddhism, a repository for much of ancient Japanese Buddhism.
They are part of the Taoist teachings that along with Confucianism, Buddhism and other Chinese
teachings and were brought into Japan in the 5th and 6th centuries. The symbols are still used in
Chinese Taoism today in much the same spiritual learning format that Usui Sensei original taught
them, although they each have a Chinese word, rather than Japanese. This was verified by senior Tai
Chi masters of the Yang style in China. The symbols are not intended to be healing energies, but
rather each is taught to represent an inner trait that could be awakened by the individual.
Dr. Hayashi and Toshihiro Eguchi were the only 2 Shichidan (the highest level) students of Usui
Sensei's original Usui Reiki system. The symbols were learned as part of Usui Reiki training but were
not used in the forms as later taught by Dr. Hayashi (after 1931). It is thought that Eguchi and Hayashi
may have been responsible for experimenting with these as healing tools.
IN JAPAN
In the original Reiki society, the symbols are rarely used as taught in the West since the level 2
student is expected to be able to feel the various energies by that stage of training. However, if after
10 years of practice, the student can still not perform the Reiki techniques they may be allowed to take
deeper level training, and thus receive the additional energies.
In this special case, in order to assist a Reikii student, some of the symbols may be used as a
teaching aid, although of course, the 3rd and 4th are just the kanji writing for the Kotodama (chant).

THE INTRODUCTION OF THE SYMBOLS INTO REIKI
Copyright © 2002/5 James Deacon
The Reiki symbols (shirushi in Japanese) have been the source of great interest and much discussion
over the years.
It is a common belief, amongst many western lineage Reiki practitioners, that Usui Sensei originally
'discovered' the four Reiki symbols in Buddhist texts - and that he re-experienced them (in 'bubbles of
light') and received understanding of their true significance, in his visionary experience on Mt. Kurama.
However, in one of Takata-sensei's recorded talks, she tells the 'Story of Reiki'. In the recording, she
clearly states that Usui-sensei discovered a formula for accessing healing in the Buddhist texts, there
is no mention of him finding the Reiki symbols in the texts.
She also states that on the last day of his meditative fast, Usui-sensei saw a vision of millions of multi-
coloured bubbles; then he saw a great white light; and then he saw appearing before him: "what he
had studied in the Sanscrit" in glowing, golden, Sanscrit letters.
In this telling of 'Story of Reiki', Takata-sensei makes no mention of the four Reiki symbols per se - in
bubbles of light or otherwise. Rather, she states that Usui-sensei saw Sanscrit text - a vision of a piece
of text he had read in a Sanscrit sutra.
Recently, some sources have claimed that, initially, Usui Sensei did not use symbols in the Reiki
system - that they were in fact something he added at a later date, out of the need to incorporate an
effective focussing method to assist those students who were experiencing difficulty in feeling, and
differentiating between, certain aspects of the Reiki 'energy'[1].
(In fact, the way that many people tell it, we might be forgiven for believing that one day Usui Sensei
just plucked four symbols out of the air at random to use as the first 'Reiki add-ons' !)
However, in a discussion (in 2002) with a Reiki Master from Japan, we were talking about this issue of
the introduction of the symbols, and the version of the story he shared, seems to put things in a
slightly different perspective.
As we are all aware, ongoing research seems to continually reveal new information as to the history
and nature of 'original' Reiki.
Current understanding is that originally (- rather than being a purely therapeutic modality,) Usui
Sensei's system was essentially a spiritual-philosophical system (incorporating certain Buddhist and
Shinto elements) - a system 'for the improvement of body and soul' - that is, a system primarily
focussing on self-development, but one which also incorporated a self-healing element.
If this was indeed the case, then 'Reiki', as it came to be understood in the West (i.e. as essentially a
purely therapeutic modality), would seem to be a natural 'outgrowth' from this original spiritual-
philosophical system.'
Now, according to the Reiki Master Jiro Kozuki, when it came to incorporating symbols into the
therapeutic element of his teachings, it was not so much a case of Usui Sensei creating four new
symbols - nor, for that matter, importing symbols from outside sources -but rather, selecting four
symbols which were already a feature of his spiritual-philosophical system, and assigning them new
significance as 'keys' (or as NLP terminology puts it: 'Resource Anchors') to assist focus of intent as
part of the evolving 'therapeutic modality' aspect of the system.

WORKING WITH SYMBOLS
Symbols are an interesting and a very effective tool for healing, spiritual growth and transformation.
They can be seen as "etheric enzymes" in a way as they catalyze specific reactions in the subtle
bodies and consciousness. Some people hear symbols as different tones. They are like energetic
tuning forks. Symbols are used to refer to specific types of energy. Each symbol has its own specific
vibration and by connecting with the symbol we are able to access and align with that specific facet of
the Life Force Energy. Symbols are a very personal tool since every person perceives them slightly
differently. The tone/energy pattern stays the same but when it gets interpreted through the
individual's perception, it can produce many different experiences. The energy can trigger old
memories and subconscious associations thus producing a variety of impressions. There is no right
way to interpret the energy, as the energy itself has no labels. It's simply a tone that is to be
experienced.
When an energy worker utilizes symbols they are often aware of the meanings, their own
interpretations that is. When applying a symbol into the client's auric field they are implanting their own
idea of the meaning as well, in addition to the pure tone of the symbol. The facilitator sends the energy
in the form of a symbol coupled with a telepathic “suggestion” of its meaning. Basically this means that
they are utilizing two different methods: The sending of "raw" energy and the offering of an idea.
Symbols can also be used without having a fixed idea of their meaning. In this case the energy worker
intuitively knows what symbol/energy to use. The symbol is simply sent to the client as pure energy
without any suggested meanings, knowing that the person will use the energy in the most beneficial
manner.
Symbols can also be used to help others in their healing process/spiritual growth without having a
fixed idea of their meaning. In this case the energy worker intuitively knows what symbol/energy to
use. The symbol is simply sent to the client as pure energy without any suggested meanings, knowing
that the person will use the energy in the most beneficial manner.
Reiki levels of attainment and energy symbols play a part in many of the teachings offered today. Most
of this came via the Mrs. Hawayo Takata and Chujiro Hayashi lineage. Japanese Reiki in most of its
forms has levels of attainment but may not necessarily use energy symbols.
Some regard Reiki symbols as sacred and secret. They are simply symbols or kanji. The
sacred lives in their energy.
Each symbol holds an energy, represents a truth, and can be used to invoke its meaning; thus,
its effect.
It is important to know that Usui Sensei did not begin attuning others to Reiki with symbols.
He initially taught the individual five principles and unique energies each symbol represented.
Thus, if one understands the energy, the symbols themselves were not needed to invoke their
power.
18
REIKI KANJI
Reiki Kanji
The Reiki Kanji was created by Dr. Usui as the name of this energy healing therapy process. By the
combination of the two pictographs he was able to emphasize the spiritual connection of the energy
and the groundedness in earth. It exemplifies the balanced nature of Reiki healing on all levels, body,
mind and spirit. Kanji are formed by specific strokes that put together in a unique way depict a story.
The kanji characters Rei and Ki both have an old and a modern form. The old form Kanji (written by
Usui and Takata Sensei's) best describes Reiho, rediscovered by Usui Sensei. The word Reiki with a
capital “R” is the word, which describes the energy of this system. The old style kanji is the form that is
currently used by the Radiance Technique and some independent Reiki Teachers.
19
The old form kanji as written on the precepts by Usui Sensei, best describes the system known as
Reiho. It is easily explainable as follows:
Rei – Strokes, 24. Consists of 3 parts. Top is rain, middle is things and bottom is Shaman.
Rei means "spirit or spiritual". The Japanese dictionary defines Rei as:
1. Spirit; the spiritual aspect of the human being as contrasted to the physical.
2. Divine, numinous, charismatic, supernatural, mysterious.
3. The luminosity of the spirit; the luminosity of a God or Sage.
4. Inconceivable spiritual ability; charismatic power; charisma; wonderful; a wonder.
5. A rainmaker, a diviner; a person or being with spiritual or supernatural powers.
6. A shaman.
7. Goodness; good, excellent, efficacious.
8. Clever, nimble, sharp.
9. Life.
10. A living being; a human being.
11. A super-natural (mythical) beast or being; a fairy, an elf.
12. Pure, undefined, unpolluted.
13. Bright, clear.
20
Ki – Strokes, 10. Consists of Breath with rice (Rice in Japan is sometimes used as a synonym for
people). Ki means "energy". The Japanese dictionary defines Ki as:
1. Vital energy connected with the breath. Invisible life-force, somewhat equivalent to the Indian
prana.
2. In the view of Zhuxi and other Neo-Confucians, the material force of the Universe. The
generative forces of heaven and earth, by means of which all things are constantly reproduced.
3. Air.
4. Breath, steam.

SYMBOLS

SOME REVELATIONS ABOUT THE SYMBOLS * Review
Interestingly, the vast majority of Usui Sensei's students never even got to see a symbol, they were
not taught to use them and they were not attuned to symbols by way of connecting them to the
energy. Most of Usui's students used meditations and/or chanted Shinto mantras to learn to become
familiar with the different energies taught. But it seems that the later students - the Imperial officers -
had trouble in getting to grips with the energies in the more traditional way that Usui used with the
other students. So Usui - together with one of his senior students called Eguchi - introduced symbols
for them to use. The symbols were a tool, a visual focus to help the student learn to assimilate or
become familiar with a particular energy; the student was not 'attuned' to the symbol in the way that
we understand in Western Reiki: they were simply given the symbol to use as a focus.
And because Usui Sensei's system had been up and running long before the symbols were introduced
(in about 1923), of course his connection ritual did not involve the use of symbols either.
Information coming from a group of Usui's surviving students in recent years has really turned
the Western view of things on its head, since now we know that:
1. Symbols do not need to be used when connecting someone to Reiki. Usui Sensei's "Reiju
empowerments" did not use symbols but they do connect you to the energy.
2. You do not need to be attuned to the symbols in order for them to work for you. Once you are
connected to the energy - and now we know how to do this without using symbols - then the
symbols will focus the energy in a particular way. In fact I believe that once you are connected
to the energy then any symbol will push the energy in a particular direction without the need to
be 'attuned' to it.
And there were more revelations to come, because the way that the symbols are used in the West
when carrying out treatments or distant healing also bear no resemblance to the way that the symbols
would have been used in Usui's time.
For example, in 'Western' (Mrs Takata inspired) Reiki the first symbol (the spiral) is referred to as a
'Power' symbol that you visualise on top of other symbols to 'empower' them or 'activate' them. But
there are no such connotations in Usui Sensei's system. This symbol simply represents earth ki, the
energy of the physical body.
Also, Usui's students were taught to keep things simple, so when the Second Degree students were
introduced to the energies they would have used them individually and not mixed them together, as is
they way the symbols tend to be used in the West. The second symbol - called the mental/emotional
symbol in Western Reiki - was seen as representing heavenly ki, an energy that made a link with the
spiritual and brought the two energies into harmony.
The third symbol, which in the West is seen as a distant healing symbol, something that makes a long-
distance connection with the energy, is viewed by Usui Sensei's surviving students as a symbol that
elicits 'oneness' within the practitioner. Oneness is a state that allows you to transcend time and
space, a state of oneness is when you realise that there really is no distance between yourself and the
recipient, and there really is no distinction between yourself and the recipient.

THE INTRODUCTION OF THE SYMBOLS INTO REIKI * Added Note

THE REIKI II SYMBOLS:
• The Power Symbol, which increases the amount of healing energy you channel.
• The Mental/Emotional Symbol, which increases your ability to heal on the mental/emotional
levels.
• The Distance/Time Symbol, which enables you to send healing energy to anyone, anywhere, to
the past, present or future.
• The Continuation symbol - this is a non-traditional symbol which allows you to start a treatment
have it continue on it's own.
SYMBOL
SYMBOL PURPOSE MEANING
NAME
The system, then, contains the same trinity, which appears in all spiritual systems. The
Body/Mind/Spirit trinity, which can be read many ways; (Ego / Subconscious / Superconscious, Self /
Family / All, Father /Son / Holy-Ghost, etc).
The fourth symbol is used to attune someone to the Reiki energy. The attunement process is similar to
the Tibetan Buddhist empowerment practices, and is a ceremony by which one is attuned to and may
access Reiki.
In healings the practitioner, of level II or above, paints the symbols in the air with his/her hands.
Sometimes the practitioner might draw the symbols on paper, with the intent that the symbol is for a
specific person or purpose. Generally, the symbols are drawn near the person who is to receive
healing.
The form of the symbol is relatively unimportant, while it is the function and intent is greatly important.
_____________________________
27
Traditionally the Reiki symbols have been kept secret and only shown to those attuned for Reiki Level
II and higher. Keeping the symbols secret has been done to prevent misuse. This was also because
Mrs. Takata insisted that the symbols were kept secret by the practitioners in Japan.
Consider whether Reiki is only the symbols, the drawn pictures. Drawing the symbols creates a flow
of energy (Chi) having different characteristics for each symbol, and that it's the flow of energy, which
is important. Without the flow of energy, the symbols themselves are just pictures. What makes Reiki
interesting is the source of energy from which Reiki springs, and the high degree of intelligence,
wisdom and divinity behind that energy source.
The Chi energy is not unique to Reiki, in fact Chi is in everything and around everything. There are
many systems of Energy Healing, of which Reiki is only one, and it is quite easy for people to access
and channel Chi without knowing Reiki.

The Symbols…
It is not necessary to physically draw the symbols in order for the mind to
align with the visual perception of the key. Mental visualization of the
symbols is recommended, as is internal intonation of the symbol names.
Ideally, the symbol is "seen" with the third eye, reflecting and connecting
with the higher energies of Universal Life Force in the higher layers of the
consciousness, as the vibrational frequency of the symbol names are
"heard" or felt from the Heart and Throat Chakras, sending the thought-
vibration resonating "outward", into the upper spheres of the consciousness
of the person seeking to be healed.
The four Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki symbols are calligraphic Japanese Kanji, or
words, usually drawn with a brush.
They are drawn in very precise, specific strokes, which express explicit
meanings. Each stroke represents a part of the picture. The strokes of the
symbols are drawn always left-to-right, top-to-bottom, and clockwise.
The names of the symbols are spoken (either using the vocal chords in the
throat chakra, or by sensing the pitch with intellectual audial vibration in the
mind's ear...) with deliberate and precise intonation.

#1 * CHO KU REI * FOCUS
FOCUS - THE POWER BOOST SYMBOL: CHO KU REI
BODY SYMBOL - CHO-KU-REI - TRANSFER OF LIFE POWER OR SOUL-FOLDING
Cho ku rei (cho koo ray) (long o in cho ) is the Usui power boost mantra and symbol to increase the
power of Reiki . This energy calls in higher universal energy and accelerates Reiki from low to high
and gives greater power and focus to the energy. Power boost is used with the other energies as well
as by itself during all treatments hands on or distance. This energy has been used to clear rooms and
crystals and to charge food and water.
As a Buddhist term this refers to the nature and organization of reality and to the emergence of
substance from the void of potential.
Put in other words: 'Let all the power of the Universe be here' or 'God is here'.
1. This is the symbol used to connect with the energy at the beginning of a session, and to
increase power/energy where needed during a session.
2. Further it is used to empower anything you want, like your medicines, crystals, food and drinks,
machines and tools you work with, etc. Cho Ku Rei increases the power of all other symbols
you use.
3. Another important use of this symbol is cleaning a space or clearing up negative energies, for
instance in a bad situation.
4. It can be used for protection of yourself or your properties, because the great amount of light
you call in with Cho Ku Rei dispels or keeps away negativity.
5. And it seals in light energy when drawn at the end of a healing.
6. Sometimes the Cho Ku Rei is drawn opposite with the spiral clockwise; this is a matter of
preference. The symbol works with either way of drawing.
31
REIKI SYMBOLS
CHO KU REI
Traditional Usui CHO KU REI:
The first of the Usui symbols is commonly known as The Power Symbol. Pronounced in Japanese as
Cho- Koo- Ray, it is learned in Reiki levels 1 & 2. It means, “Put all the power of the Universe here.”
and is most often drawn by the practitioner’s dominant hand on each of his/her palms before sending
treatment. Additionally, it is often drawn on the recipient’s Crown Chakra before a session thoroughly
begins. It can be placed wherever the practitioner feels whether on him/herself or the recipient.
Drawing it, imagining it or chanting it three times can invoke Cho Ku Rei.
"The light switch" that turns on the healing energy and increases its power.
The symbols are usually used only until the practitioner becomes familiar with the power
behind the symbols. That is to say, you might visualise the Cho Ku Rei symbol until you
become familiar enough with the energy and emphasis behind Cho Ku Rei, at which point you
need no longer draw or visualise the symbol. You can also speak the symbol's name to call on
its power.
Drawing Cho Ku Reiki in the counter clockwise position "increases" the energy of Reiki.
Drawing Cho Ku Rei in the clockwise position "decreases" the energy of the client.
32
DIRECTS ENERGY TO THE PHYSICAL BODY.
33
HOW TO DRAW THE CHO KU REI
MEANING:
1. The archetypal picture suggests a vortex of energy, spiralling upward through the seven energy
centers of the body.
2. The symbol is generally drawn from left to right, and clockwise, as the energy of the chakras is
thought to flow.
3. It is relevant, when drawing this symbol, that the sign includes seven arcs.
4. Some Reiki Masters theorize that the symbol drawn clockwise represents a "pushing in" of
energy, while counter clockwise spiral is "pulling out".
5. Others suggest that clockwise signifies ascending energy, or moving energy upward, and
counter-clockwise moves the energy downward.
34
Cho ku rei's origins are obscure.
However, a meaning of the
words “choku rei” is "to fix
miraculously" (choku=to fix,
rei=miracle), some people seem
to be of the opinion that the
actual symbol is of Shinto origin,
and means something like 'In the
presence of the spirits (kami)'.
It has also been said that the
choku rei is meant to represent a
coiled snake with it's head
raised, linking it to the Kundalini
Serpent of Indian yogic tradition.
According to some theories, the
real forms of kami are actually
snakes...

CHO KU REI ~ Practicing Gassho
The Power Symbol. Reiki Energy will flow without it, but when you use it, it is believed that the energy
increases significantly. It would be as if you had changed the bulb in a lamp from 50 watts to 500
watts. Use at the beginning of the healing session, and at any other time that additional power is
needed. It is geared specifically for healing within the physical body.
GASSHO TECHNIQUE:
The Japanese term gassho refers to a ritual gesture formed by placing the hands - palms together, in
the prayer-position - in front of the mouth - the fingertips at a level just below the nose.
(Many people also perform gassho with hands positioned in front of the chest at a level just above the
heart.)
36
HOW TO USE CHO KU REI
1. The Cho Ku Rei can be used to increase the power/flow of Reiki, or to assist in focussing Reiki
more intensely at a given location, or to a specific intent.
2. The symbol can be used as an 'energy cleansing' / 'energy blessing' for food, drink, or
possessions; and may be employed as a seal or amulet of protection.
3. Some practitioners use this Symbol to cleanse a room of negative atmospheres; or to 'seal' a
treatment.
4. And while in 'western' forms of Reiki, the symbol may be used in conjunction with one or more
of the other symbols, (with the intent of increase their potency) in 'Japanese' lineages, it is
primarily utilised in a stand-alone sense.
37
Draw the Cho Ku Rei on all sides of your home for Cleansing,
Protection and Upliftment.
Make sure that you draw this symbol at least 6 feet below your home.
Draw it on the four walls of each room, on the ceiling, and floors. The Reiki Color Ray
ranges from light violet to gold. By drawing this symbol throughout your home it
changes the vibration and shifts the energy patterns of those in the home.
38
USED TO ACTIVATE YOUR PHYSICAL / SPIRITUAL ENERGY CENTERS.
Draw or visualize on the palm of both hands to open and activate this chakra center.
39
USE CHO KU REI AS A PERSONAL SHIELD.
It will flow around your aura sealing in a high vibration, only allowing the Loving, Calming energy to be
a part of you. As you draw the symbol, say the name 3x’s. ~ Example: Cho Ku Rei, Cho Ku Rei , Cho
Ku Rei.
40
CHO-KU-REI
1. Increase of power, the 'light switch'.
2. Called the Connection symbol.
3. Used to illuminate or indicate the position or nature of a problem, it intensifies healing energy
like a laser.
4. For sealing the Reiki power around the person or space being healed.
5. It stands for male-female energy as the horizontal line stands for "Shiva", and the spiral for
"Shakti" or kundalini power.
6. Clearing a room/ vehicle/ train/ bus of negative energy along with white light.
7. Protecting.
8. Charging any other symbol.
9. Purifying food/water.
10. This symbol is drawn both clockwise and counter-clockwise; the former connects to heaven and
the latter to earth or feminine energy. They can be used together to charge any other symbol.
11. You may draw this symbol over your head (crown chakra) to improve memory, clarity or to
locate lost objects.
12. Draw the Cho Ku Reiki on your palms before placing them on a hand position in a healing
session.
13. By simply visualizing it, your ability to do Reiki will be increased many times. You will probably
use it in every healing.
14. Cho-Ku-Rei concentrates Reiki in one focused spot by calling all the energy of the
Universe into the healing.
15. This energy calls in higher universal energy and accelerates Reiki from low to high and gives
greater power and focus to the energy.
16. It is used with the other energies as well as by itself during all treatments hands-on or distance.
17. This energy has been used to clear rooms and crystals and to charge food and water.

When applied on a lesion, it helps the faster healing of this.
For the creation of a sacred space, used for initiations, treatments or meditations.
When applied with a palm on the other it is equivalent to an attunement and thus one
can work on full capacity for about 5 minutes.
Meditation on this symbol can lead to clear-sightedness. In this case one can meditate
twice a day, 30 minutes each.
Can be applied on car batteries, electronic devices, telephones, and furniture for
increasing their time of use.
Self-treatment: before treatment, the symbol may be applied on the palms and then on
every position of the self-treatment.

CHO-KU-REI VARIATIONS
Reiki can be visualized as electricity. The light is switched on when you put your hands down to heal.
When you add the Cho-Ku-Rei, the light is boosted from a 50-watt bulb to 500 watts.
The Cho-Ku-Rei concentrates Reiki in one focused spot by calling all the energy of the Universe into
the healing. In the archaeology of this planet, spirals always represent Goddess energy. The spiral
shape is found in all natural phenomena, weather patterns, thunderstorms and hurricanes tornadoes
are very intense spiral storms human DNA, and plants grow following a spiral Fibonacci series. In any
metaphysical or energy work:
Northern Hemisphere
• Clockwise is the direction of invoking and increasing.
• Counter clockwise is the direction of decrease and dispersion.
1. Intent is most important here. Try it both ways and then make your choice. If you
determine for yourself that one way increases power, keep using that method as
increase is the intent of the symbol. Pick one way and use it consistently.
2. Double Cho-Ku-Rei, one drawn in each direction are used for manifesting. There is no
more powerful aid to manifesting abundance than this symbol.
3. In using it be totally positive and ethical in what you ask for, and ask for only what you
really want. The Universe is comprised of abundance with every goodness available to
those who ask and are ready to receive.

#2 * SEI HE KI – HARMONY
The Emotional Symbol
Sei = I point
He = The Bow, Arrow to
= Life-force, Light, Awareness
Ki
This strange symbol looks like a human head with two bumps on the places of the eighth chakra (the
cosmic chakra where divinity connects with our physical existence and place of the soul akasha) and
the tenth chakra (place of mystical talents and inner sight).
Therefore alternative meanings of the Sei He Ki are 'Remember Your Self' and 'God and humanity
becoming one'. Pointing your arrow to awareness means bringing your attention to your feelings,
emotions, patterns and psychology in order to understand and heal them.
Sei He Ki restores emotional balance and harmony. Please understand that many diseases and
problems have their roots in negative emotions and false beliefs. This symbol is used for the healing of
bad habits, addictions, emotional trauma and heavy feelings like anger, frustration or jealousy. That
makes this symbol another good one against bad vibrations and negative entities. A good symbol for
inner calmness and the release of blockages.

REIKI SYMBOLS * SEI HEKI * #2 SYMBOL
51
SEI HEKI
PURIFICATION AND PROTECTION
The Sei-He-Ki (say hay key) is designated for emotional healing. It is defined as
This symbol brings Divinity into the human energy pattern and aligns the upper chakras.
Sei-He-Ki is analogous to the Sanskrit symbol "Aum" and the Arabic "Allah".
I use them all when it suits me.
The more healing work one does, the more apparent it becomes that virtually all physical level
diseases have an emotional coordinate.
Diseases and painful emotions go together and healing the disease also means healing the emotions
that go with it.
Human life is filled with emotional pain and traumas large and small, most of us are taught that
expressing feelings is inappropriate. Instead of allowing ones self to feel pain and release it, the
emotions are stuck inside. Where pain remains within and has no other release, it manifests as
physical illness. By using Sei-He-Ki, the emotional aspect is addressed and is often the key to the
healing.
A painful emotion or trauma that has been held within is brought to the surface. The receiver
reconnects with the pain long enough to finish it and let it go.
Anger, fear, frustration, grief, and loneliness are more often the source of disease than any bacteria,
virus, or organic malfunction.
Sei-He-Ki has further uses. It can be invoked for protection and purification, to clear negative energy,
to release spirit attachments and to guard a room against negative emotions, diseases or entities.
Invoking Sei-He-Ki focuses Reiki energy on the emotional body and intensifies its effects. It helps the
receiver to target the emotions specific to the healings, and to release them as quickly as possible.
Some describe Sei-He-Ki as “activating the Source within” and define it as awakening and purifying
the kundalini, re-patterning the brain and healing the mind-body connection thru’ the subconscious.
52
THE ELEMENT OF WATER: SEI-HE-KI
For healing emotional upsets, or emotional disturbances. Symbolises the polarity of male/female
or Man/God, or even Above/Below. This symbol aligns the upper chakras. Use of this symbol may
bring out the origin of the emotional trauma to the surface mind of the patient, who may relive the
emotional pain. Holding the symbol should enable the patient to release these feelings. Helps the
patient to express pent-up feelings. This symbol is used at the beginning of treatment, and whenever it
is needed. According to AJ Mackenzie Clay, this symbol awakens and purifies kundalini, repatterning
the brain and healing the mind/body connection through the subconscious.

SEI HE KI * REVIEW:
Sei-He-Ki is the symbol use for mental and emotional healing. It provides purification
and cleansing. Sei-He-Ki mean purification by the fire of wisdom. Sei-He-Ki Balances
the right and left sides of the brain. It is very good for healing relationship problems and
can be used with any mental and emotional distress such as nervousness, fear,
depression, anger and sadness. Sei-He-Ki can be used to treat addictions, problems
with weight loss and smoking. Sei-He-Ki can help improve memory.

SEI HE KI
The Mental/Emotional symbol, Sei He Ki, has to do with Yin and Yang and the balance between the
two sides of the brain.
The left part of the symbol represents Yang and our left side of the brain (logic, structure and linear
thinking etc.) The right side of the symbol represents Yin and our right side of the brain. (Fantasy,
feelings, intuition etc.)
When you are facing another person and draw the symbol, the left side of the symbol, i.e. the Yang
part of the symbol ends up on the receiver's right side of the brain and the Yin part on the left side
thereby helping to balance the two sides.

HON SHA ZE SHO NEN
HISTORY:
It is very difficult to establish exactly what Usui meant when he decided to use this symbol. There are
so many different meanings of the Kanji that form the individual parts of the distant healing symbol,
and different combinations of kanji mean different things.
If you were to write down the Japanese kanji for Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen you would see a combination of
symbols that is much longer than the one used in Reiki practice. This is because the kanji have been
“rammed together” when the bottom part of one kanji is the same or similar to the top part of the kanji
below it. This is not a mistake because a Shingon monk said that it is standard practice in Shingon
Buddhism to “jam” characters together to produce a certain energetic effect.
In secret Shintoism Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen means, “man and God are one”, though it is not known how
it is written down.
The Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen (3) allows us to connect and heal at the deepest level - the soul level.
Linking with the soul enables us to transcend all time and space, so we can send Reiki to others, or
ourselves, at any time - past, present or future. We cannot change the past but we can change how it
affects us, enabling healing of past traumas - even past lives to heal the present.
58
This symbol transmits Reiki energy across time and space. Using this symbol you can send Reiki
across the room, across town, to other parts of the country or anywhere in the world. Distance is no
barrier. You can also use this symbol to bridge time. You can send Reiki into the "future," where it will
store up like a battery, to access at the time you or others will need it. Likewise, you can send Reiki
into the "past," to heal issues from earlier in this lifetime, or to past life issues that affect you or others
now.
The essential message of the symbol is "The Buddha in me greets the Buddha in you." (Another word
for Buddha is "The Awakened Heart.") And so when you use this symbol you are saying "The
Awakened Heart in me greets the Awakened Heart in You." And when that connection is declared
and honored through your hearts, you and the recipient are in a state of Divine Union, and Reiki can
be shared regardless of the physical distance between you.
This symbol connects to the Akashic Records, the life records of each soul, and so it can be used to
heal karmic patterns or tendencies that have manifested as dis-ease in the body or that have resulted
in mental or emotional pain or distress.
To use:
Contract your Hui Yin and visualize Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen (3) whilst chanting its name to yourself three
times, then (still contracting your Hui Yin) visualize Cho Ku Rei (1) whilst chanting its name to yourself
three times.
Imagine the energy spiraling down through the Cho Ku Rei and into the Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen flowing
through into or to wherever and whomever you are healing. If healing any mental or emotional issues
at a distance or in a past life add the Sei He Ki. Always ask that the energy goes to the Highest Good
of all concerned especially as emotional issues usually involve other people and at a soul level what is
presumed right in one lifetime or for one person may not be to the highest good overall.
The sequence is the same whoever or whatever you are sending to, so experiment - but always send
to the Highest Good.
59
ADDED INFORMATION ON * HON SHA ZE SHO NEN
Symbol 3 is technically not a 'symbol' per se, but rather is a stylized combination of five kanji
characters.
Each of the four Reiki symbols has an accompanying Japanese mantra/phraze - frequently referred to
as a jumon ('spell' or 'incantation'). In 'western' lineage Reiki this jumon is commonly used as the
symbol's name.
In the case of Symbol 3, the 'symbol' itself is actually the jumon: "Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen"
[or "Hon Ja Ze Sho Nen"], written in kanji characters.
Over the years there have been several suggested translations of the jumon: "Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen" -
including several very misleading ones. For example, it is frequently said that "Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen"
translates as "no past, no present, no future".
However, probably one of the clearest translations of "Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen" is actually:
Just as calligraphers in the West - when writing a phrase in the Roman Alphabet - will frequently
embellish their artwork with flourishes and overlaps, and often combine letters or allow them to run
into one-another, this is also the case with Japanese kanji calligraphy.
There are various calligraphic renditions of Symbol 3 - all looking slightly different depending on the
'brush style' of the individual 'drawing' it.
In the example shown here, not only are there overlaps, but also certain strokes which form part of the
individual kanji, have been omitted.
As kanji are of Chinese origin, each character has two forms of pronunciation or 'reading': the on yomi
or Chinese derived reading, and the kun yomi or native Japanese reading - e.g: the word 'mountain' in
its on yomi is: san, but the native kun yomi reading is: yama. (Both are in common usage in Japan)
There are many thousands of kanji characters - some highly obscure & only very rarely used;
however, the five kanji whose stylised interlinking forms the HSZSN, are to be found amongst the
"Jooyoo Kanji" - that is, characters specified by the Japanese Government as approved for common
use. In fact, they all come under the category of kanji expected to be familiar to all Fourth Grade
Students.
The original five kanji are given on the next page with their on yomi and kun yomi, and their basic
meanings (however the emphasis is on the word 'basic' - the meaning of a kanji when in combination
with others can be somewhat different from the meaning of the kanji in isolation.)

THE DISTANCE SYMBOL:
VARIOUS DIFFERENT FORMS
62
63
HON SHA ZE SHO NEN
64
HON SHA ZE SHO NEN
This symbol releases us from the barriers of time.
1. As with the previous two symbols, pull the Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen down through your Crown
Chakra, your throat Chakra, your Chest Chakra, and into your Heart Chakra. (If you use Kundalini
Reiki, pull the symbol up from the earth, into your Root Chakra, Your Sacral Chakra, Your Solar
Plexus Chakra, and into your Heart Chakra. You will then become one with Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen.
65
Using this symbol you can send Reiki across the room, across town, to other
parts of the country or anywhere in the world. Distance is no barrier.
66
SENDING IN TIME
You can also use this symbol to bridge time. You can send Reiki into the "future," where it will store
up like a battery, to access at the time you or others will be needing it.
HON-SHA-ZE-SHO-NEN helps you understand that time is just an illusion. You can time your
healings or attunements by stating the time you intend the healing/attunement to be received. When
sending in time, make sure to specify exactly when the person should receive the energy. It works
well, but be sure you are very specific.
EXAMPLE:
I intend to send healing to Joan Doe on January 23, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. central time
(or-“ her time”-works well). Be careful with using this method or you could send to
the incorrect day or time or even year.
67
Likewise, you can send Reiki into the "past," to heal issues from earlier in this
lifetime, or to past life issues that affect you or others now.
TECHNIQUE:
1. Have photos (or write on a piece of paper the ages of yourself or others you wish to send
healing to) of yourself from infancy to present time.
2. Line them up in the order of age progression.
3. Draw or visualize the CHO KU REI and the HON SHA ZE SHO NEN going up through each
picture, creating a energy healing time line.
4. Send Reiki Healing energy down through the time line of pictures.

USING THE HUI YIN TO INCREASE YOUR REIKI ENERGY
Reiki flows through you, not from you. You can increase the amount of Reiki energy you
channel by connecting two of the main acupuncture meridians, the Central and Governing
channels.
The Central channel runs from your perineum (between your anus and genitals) up the front middle of
your body, into your mouth. The Governing channel runs from the perineum up the back middle of
your body, up over your head, and ends just above your upper lip.
70
CV1 • Huiyin
Conception Vessel 1 • Meeting Point of the Conception, Penetrating and Governing
Vessels.
Location: In the perineal region, at the mdipoint between the anus and the posterior
border of the scrotum in males and the posterior labial commissure in females.

72
CLEANSING BREATH
Kidney Breathing
During the attunement, it is necessary to direct the RAKU fire energy up the spine and into the brain to
the pineal gland. This reenergizes the entire body and raises your spiritual consciousness.
a) To see if you are breathing properly, place the palm of your hands flat against your lower back
over the kidneys.
b) Direct your breath into the kidneys, expanding them.
c) Your hands should rise with every inhalation and lie flat at the end of every exhalation. This
type of breathing will increase your RAKU gradually if practiced every day.
The second step is to locate the HUI YIN acupressure point (conception vessel 1) between your
anus and genitals.
a) Feel as if you are pulling this point up into your body as you contract it.
b) The Reiki Master can hold this during the entire attunement, and with more experience and
control can hold this during a class attunement.
c) This step directs the RAKU fire energy up along the spinal column.
d) Make sure that you are breathing normally when holding this point.
e) Women may be familiar with the term Kagel Exercise when describing this movement.
Combining the KIDNEY BREATH with the contraction of the HUI YIN point is the next step.
a) First contract your Hui Yin and then take a Kidney Breath.
b) As you are filling your lower abdomen with your breath, imagine a light mist forming at the base
of your spine.
c) The mist moves up the spine as if it were inside a hollow tube.
d) This mist enters the head, filling the head. At this point, the white mist releases through the
mouth making a hissing sound. To make this sound, the tongue is placed at the ridge behind
your front teeth.
73
ACTIVATING BREATH TECHNIQUE (Also called Blue Kidney Breath)
2. Draw in a breath imagining it as white light coming down through the crown chakra, through the
tongue, down the front of the body through the Hui Yin point and up the spine filling the center of the
head.
3. Visualize the white light turning blue and rotating clockwise, and then turning into purple, then gold.
5. Exhale gently into the other person’s crown, hands or any other part of their body.
6. Imagine the symbol on your breath entering their head or hands and lodging in the base of the
brain.
1. Contract the Hui Yin (perineum) and place the tip of the tongue to the roof of the mouth (hold
throughout).
2. Take 3 (or more) kidney breaths (Sapphire blue in, white out).
3. Breathe in white mist to your root chakra. Hold breath. The white mist comes up through the nerve
bundles in the center of your spine. Your brain turns white, sapphire blue, royal purple and then flows
into a golden color.
74
When to use the Fire Dragon Breath: Increases & magnifies your energy
1. You can use the Fire dragon breath when you need to magnify the healing process.
2. If there is a situation where the healee needs to speed up their healing.
3. For a quick energy boast.
4. As part of a quick treatment process.
5. Session when using this breath - 15 minutes

DISTANT HEALING
Distance is a three dimensional illusion. Remote healing may be done anywhere.
The distance from you can range from just off the body to all the way to the other side of the earth. It is
easy to understand this principle. Just picture the telephone, TV and microwave transmissions. For
someone that has never seen TV or a telephone, our "reality" is magical to them. Something that
travels through the air or through solid wire! Our senses at first tell us this cannot be; yet it is. It
challenges everything they were taught and knew yet, once learned, the concept and use of it become
second nature. Remote healing uses many frequencies of energy.
Everything is energy in one form or another. The building blocks of what we call reality are atoms
and various particles that make them up and are free moving. All are defined by science by their
energy characteristics and potentials. When it comes down to it, all healing is "Energy Healing"
because everything is energy, even drugs.
How does healing occur? All healing is a rebalancing of the body's cells and systems regaining their
proper functions along with other energies properly balanced and flowing. Paracelsus summed it up
nicely hundreds of years ago. "The job of the Physician is to humour the patient while the body
heals itself." It will be the same forever. What assists the body? Certainly humour, Love and your
beliefs! Your beliefs can also make you sick and resist the normal healing processes of the body.
Distant healers provide healing energy; they send that energy to assist you in healing yourself.
Healing is a choice on which action is taken; not healing is also a choice. There are many different
energy modalities available, each using a part of the total energies in their own way. Each has its own
advantages and limitations. Learn about them and choose what you feel is the best for you either here
or elsewhere. We hope that this site helps you do this.
DISTANT HEALING
77
DISTANT HEALING…
In its simplest form, Distant Healing can be a prayer that healing will be sent to the person who needs
help at any specific time. Healers send their Distant Healing 'unconditionally', knowing that the healing
energies will be directed where they are needed and in a way which is right for the recipient. That
means the healer honours the fact that each person is more than the physical body - that they are
spirit. It is the spirit or, Higher Self, which will dictate the healing energies and all will operate under
Divine Law and not from a personal desire to see that someone is cured of a particular condition. The
healer, acting as a conduit for Distant Healing, also recognises and honour's the soul's evolutionary
journey and that the reason for a dis-ease may be for a much more profound reason than they are
allowed to know.
Distant Healing can be a particularly helpful way for sending healing if the person/s live a long way
away; it can also be sent to people in hospitals, hospices, prisons and other institutions. Children, and
animals, as well as the planet can benefit from this non-invasive method of healing.
___________
78
DISTANT HEALING AND THE HUMAN ENERGY FIELD
One of the basic teachings of healing with Reiki is that we are more than our physical bodies. We also
have an energy body made up of our aura (energy fields), the chakras (energy centers) and the
meridians (energy pathways.) Like our physical body that takes in food to nourish it and give it energy,
our energy body does the same. The energy fields take energy in, the chakras break it down, and the
meridians distribute it throughout the body.
Our body is comprised of energy vibrating at different speeds. Our physical body, our thoughts,
emotions, and our spiritual center, all vibrate at a particular frequency or speed. These varying
vibrations or pulsations create a field around them, which are often referred to as our aura or energy
field. The aura is an information center and a highly perceptual system that transmits and receives
messages from the external and internal environment.
Each energy layer appears different and has its own individual function. Yet, they continuously
interpenetrate each other as well as the physical body. These fields can be felt through touch. It is
what we perceive or sense when we scan with our hands.
The Etheric / Auric Field is the first layer of our energy body and is ¼ to 2 inches from the body. It is
the energy duplicate of the physical body. (It houses the chakras and meridians.)
79
The Emotional Field is where we experience feelings. It extends about 1 to 3 inches beyond the
physical body.
The Mental Field is associated with thoughts and mental processes. It can be sensed 3 to 8 inches
from the body.
The Spiritual Field is made up of four or more layers, which help us relate to our higher self and
spiritual dimensions. It is activated when we meditate, pray or channel. It extends 6" to 2' beyond our
physical body.
These energy fields are also referred to as our four levels of being; or our physical, mental, emotional
spiritual selves.
80
HERE ARE SOME WAYS TO ENHANCE A DISTANT REIKI SESSION USING THE
ENERGY FIELDS OR FOUR LEVELS OF BEING.
1. First, empower your hands and chakras with the Usui power symbol.
81
3. Then invoke or visualize the distant healing symbol and say its name three times.
Cho Ku rei
Cho Ku Rei
Cho Ku Rei Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen
Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen
Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen
4. Visualize the person you will be sending Reiki to. Intend to send Reiki to each level of being for
10-20 minutes.
5. To send Reiki to their physical level of being, imagine that the Reiki enters their crown chakra.
Then it goes inside their body and slowly and gently fills them up.
82
6. As they become filled with Reiki energy, all of their body organs and parts are bathed in Reiki.
Then the energy begins to radiate out from their physical body. Imagine that they are glowing
with healing energy. See them expanded and their first energy layer filled.
7. Then send Reiki to their emotional being. Imagine that they are filled with peace, joy, love,
contentment and overall well being.
8. Imagine that the glow from their physical body now extends out into their emotional level.
9. Next, send Reiki to their mental being. Intend that their thoughts are clear and calm. Imagine
that their brain is working so that thoughts flow easily, and are well thought out.
10. Imagine that solutions to perplexing problems come easily. Imagine that worry gently flows out
of their body. As all these troubling thoughts leave their body, Reiki fills up and extends out into
their mental level.
11. Then send Reiki to their spiritual being.
12. Imagine that Reiki comes in and fills up and restores their spirit….their essence…their soul.
Imagine it as a beautiful golden flow of energy that is a direct link to the higher realms.
13. Imagine that guidance flows in and that they are directly connected to the source, whatever they
believe that to be.
14. Intend that the Reiki energy reconnects them to the divine within them and reignites their flame.
See them filled with spiritual energy that extends out beyond all the other levels of their being.
15. You can also do this by having a conversation with the person before you send Reiki. You can
address each level of being by asking questions before the session. For the physical body you
can ask them how they are feeling? Are they having any discomfort or pain?
16. For the emotional body, you can ask how they are feeling emotionally. Is there something that
is making them feel happy or something that is making them feel sad?
17. Then ask if they have too much on their mind (mental level) or are worried about something?
Does their head feel like it is ready to explode?
18. To address the spiritual level, ask how their spirit feels? Do they experience the sacredness of
everyday life or is everyday just another day? Do they feel alone and unprotected in the world?
83
19. Before you are ready to begin sending Reiki, ask them to allow the Reiki energy to heal and
address all of their levels of being. Ask them to allow themselves to receive this healing energy.
20. Then send Reiki for 10-20 minutes to each level of being and intend that the Reiki go to the
issues, thoughts, or feelings that you discussed.
84
21. After the session is finished, let them rest. Visualize a power symbol over them and seal the
session with light and love.
22. Do dry bathing (Kenyoku) to disconnect from their energy field.
Note - The brushing of the arms from shoulder to hand is an addition by H. Doi, it was
originally just brushing the wrist to tips of fingers.
(An interpretation from Japanese - Kenyoku - Imagine sacred bathing before you meet god,
which is done by Shinto priests at some ceremonies to clear/purify body and spirit.)
85
23. Give yourself Reiki for a few minutes.
24. You can call them afterwards to see what they experienced and share what you sensed.
25.Then end with gratitude for the gift of Reiki.

DIFFERENT WAYS TO SEND HEALING ENERGY
Here are some basic remote methods:
1. The simplest technique for sending Reiki to someone at a distance is to use a photo of
them. This technique was taught to Takata by Hayashi. Draw the three symbols with your
finger on the picture and say the names of each symbol three times as you draw them. Intend
that the person be filled with Reiki. Then place the photo between your hands, and then send
the Reiki. You can also do a self-treatment using the photo under your hands as you treat
yourself intending that the person receive the treatment.
You can send energy or place a healing crystal or crystals on the photo or drawing if the
drawing is large enough you can actually place your stone layout on the drawing with the
intention for who and where you are sending
87
2. A Meridian Chart or a Reflexology Chart can be used as a proxy image.
MERIDIANS

90
3. You can lay out a chakra set of crystals intend they represent the person to
be treated and use a pendulum or crystal wand or your hands to scan the
chakra and aura and to send energy through the chakra crystals to the
person.

2. Hematite: This stone helps you to set protective boundaries when you feel as if others are
intruding into your private space.
3. Black and snowflake obsidian: help you to see what material things you no longer need for
growth.
4. Smoky quartz: The lightest of the dark stones, helps to blend the energies of the first and
seventh chakras.
5. Tiger's eye: Helps you to feel secure about physical existence.
Any of these stones may be placed at the base of the spine or at the feet.

STONES ASSOCIATED WITH THE THIRD CHAKRA:
1. Aragonite: has a calming and stabilizing effect, especially on emotions such as anger and
stress.
2. Citrine: is the stone most related to manifesting abundance and to the balanced use of will.
3. Golden calcite: helps to integrate new energies and beliefs areas related to personal
empowerment, such as relationships and business.
4. Malachite: releases congestion in the solar plexus, and aids creativity.
5. Rhodochrosite: assists in deep breathing, thus helping to relieve anxiety and tension.
6. Rutilated quartz: helps to add enhanced creating energy to our dreams.
7. Pyrite: helps us to come up with creative ideas, which can help bring abundance in our lives.
8. Tiger's eye: helps to teach us good timing in terms of when to act on a dream.
9. Unakite: Unakite helps us to understand the mental and emotional sources for it. It is also
believed to help release conditions, which have been inhibiting personal growth.

95
REIKI CRYSTAL BATHS
This is a technique that combines the healing energy of Reiki with the energy of crystal healing.
1. Before starting a Reiki Crystal Bath, have your crystals cleared and ready near your Reiki table.
You can use as little as few or as many stones as you want.
This a guideline for a layout with a minimum of 7 quartz crystal points, plus one appropriate
stone for each chakra up to as many as several pounds of quartz crystals and multiple
stones for each chakra. It is not important that the crystals and stones be particularly pretty
specimens, however natural quartz crystals seem to give the most energy.
2. With the client laying on the Reiki table as for any Reiki treatment, begin to place stones on the
table, nestled up to the client's body.
The first figure here shows areas that you can start the layout with, and are the ones you
would use with a smaller quantity of quartz crystals. Be sure to point the crystals towards
the client's body.
3. Next, place the chakra stones directly on the body of the client, being careful not to touch
private parts.
96
4. Then, if you have more crystals and stones, you can fill in any gaps with crystals nestled
around the body and/or on the body around the chakra stones. Remember to make sure the
crystals point towards the body.
5. You may also ask the client to hold a quartz crystal or stone associated with a chakra they have
particular issues with.
6. Once the crystals and stones are placed, proceed with the Reiki treatment as usual.
7. You may place your hands directly on the stones for magnification of energy or hold your hands
slightly above the stones during the treatment.
97
6. Use a teddy bear or doll as a proxy or put a pillow on your lap to represent
the recipient. Know that the healing will reach your intended recipient automatically.
98
Connect and ground. ‘Please accept this Reiki healing with
Unconditional love, and take all that you need’.
99
Hand position for covering legs, thighs etc.
100
Turn your bear over to continue, placing head to the side.
These are a few examples of the hand positions for using a bear as a conduit for healing.
Loving thoughts are like seeds that you plant with your heart and mind… this is distance reiki in
action.
101
7. Write the person’s name on a piece of paper and hold that piece of paper
with the name on it between your hands and send healing that way.
Place the paper between your hands and Reiki the Paper.
________________________________________
8. Set a programmed crystal on the name or put the name in a box with your
charged healing crystals.
102
9. You can visualize the person as though they are right in front of you and just
do a treatment or imagine that you are in the same place together.
10. Another technique is to substitute your body for theirs doing the treatment
on your own body and intending that the energies run to them in those
places.
103
11.You can also do a “spot” treatment on an organ or other body part, just
visualize the part and go for it.
__________________________
104
THUMB TECHNIQUE
Another technique that is used is the 'thumb method'.
1. If you do not have the use of both hands to send absentee treatments, then you can empower
the thumb of your non-dominate hand to represent a person, situation or relationship (this is a
good one for job interviews, tense situations, angry people, dis-eased/dying, etc.).
2. Wrap the remaining fingers of your non-dominate hand around your thumb and as you do Reiki
on your thumb, you are doing Reiki on the person, situation, or relationship.
________________________________________
FLAME/CANDLE TECHNIQUE
1. Use a flame (oil lamp or candle) to represent a requestee list, especially a large one with many
names.
2. Set-up the list of individuals the requested a healing.
3. Then we place a candle on the list, light it, and empower the flame to represent the list, then
repeat the symbols, and intend (mentally or verbally) that as long as the flame burns, the list and
everyone that it represents receives an individual, complete and continuous Reiki treatment.
4. As you pass the flame, you can add extra energy by drawing extra Power symbols onto the
flame.

DISTANCE HEALING
105
DISTANT HEALING
1. Raise your hands up in front of you, at the level of your heart, with your palms facing each other
and a small space in between.
2. Imagine the earth in this space. Name the whole earth or the part of the earth to which you
want to send healing.
4. Make the Reiki symbols for distant healing in the sequence 1-3-1, 1-2-3-1, or 1-3-2-1, in accord
with the way you have been taught. Then return the hand with which you drew the symbols to
its original position.
5. Listen to the Reiki energy as it flows between your hands, sending healing.
6. When you feel the flow of energy begin to diminish, bring the treatment to a close with an
expression of thanks or a blessing, then break the connection by blowing into the space
between your hands, clapping, rubbing your hands together, or bringing them together as if in
prayer.
Compared to some traditionally taught distant healing methods, this method is very efficient,
taking only a few minutes; so it is easy to incorporate into daily Reiki practice -- and, as with all
Reiki, there are healing benefits for the practitioner as well.
106
BEAMING TECHNIQUE
There are two different beaming techniques. They are beaming distantly and in person beaming to
someone in your location (i.e., you can see them).
____________________________
BEAMING:
In-person beaming is distant reiki but done when you are with the person. It is something you can do
when you want to send reiki to someone in the line of sight. This is useful for people with touch issues,
or for people who it would be inappropriate to touch like burn victims or those with infectious diseases.
1. To do beaming, extend the palms toward the person and use the symbol/word for distant
healing.
2. The difference between this and distant healing is you can see the person. (It can be noted that
all Johrei Channels use beaming to send Johrei.)
3. You can also beam from the body, projecting out from every cell. You can also beam from the
eyes, or anywhere else you care to.
107
REIKI DISTANT HEALING STACKS
Reiki Distant Healing Stacks is a quick and powerful technique for sending distant Reiki to more than
one person or inanimate object at the same time. A ten-person stack along with ten inanimate objects
will take no longer than fifteen minutes to complete, often only five or ten minutes. The procedure was
originated by Reiki Master Anthony Glenn Agee.
A Healing Stack uses the "Energetic Transfer" method, which means that the energy is condensed
and then sent all in one unit towards the target. Because energy is being sent to more than one
person at the same time, there is an amplification effect. The factor of amplification grows
exponentially with each person as you go higher up the stack. So does the relative amount of energy
each person receives. For example, if you make a 50-person stack, whomever you put on top will be
completely blown away.
Since the amount of energy increases exponentially, a distant healing stack for ten people will take the
same amount of time as it takes to send energy to one person. The major difference is that each
person in the stack will get more energy. The energy will be more powerful, because stacks send out
more energy than normal single distant methods. The greatest thing about this technique is that you
can place yourself in the stack at the same time as other people, even put yourself on top.
_____________________________________
GUIDELINES
Because the energy increases exponentially, limit the stack to ten people or less, including
yourself.
Make sure the people in the stack are aware that you will be sending energy to them. Stacks
produce results in one-way or another, sometimes more powerfully than you might think or want. I
once put a student in a stack without telling him, and he received the energy while driving a car. His
hands became so hot that he could not hold the steering wheel and had to pull off the road for a
while. Later, when he told me what happened, I realized that he could have had a wreck!
The issue of free will is also important when deciding to send energy to others. If in your best
judgment the person is in need of healing energy but is very ill or otherwise incapacitated, then
state the intention that they are free to either accept OR reject the energy. Also, specify that if the
energy is rejected, it must return to you or go to heal the earth or to someone who wishes to
receive it.
Place inanimate objects in a stack after the initial ten people, not before. Some ideas for inanimate
objects are the Earth, your car, your house, your relationship, your life as an entity, your healing
space, your crystal grid to charge it, a habit you want to get rid of, or a change in your behavior that
you want to empower, your Guides, your city, world peace, or a war or other catastrophe.

SAVING A STACK
While drawing the last finishing Power Symbol state, "I now intend that this stack be referred to as
____________."
This is especially useful for groups like your family, friends, regular clients, or students.
You can use a saved stack in place of a person in a normal stack. Just state you want to send
energy to the __________ stack and draw a Power Symbol to empower it.
109
CHANGING A STACK
Start by sending some energy to the existing stack. Then when you are finished state, "I now wish
to dissipate the ___________ stack."
________________________________________
SUPER STACKS
You can also make a stack of stacks and then name it as well.
Keep the stack to 10 or less people, including yourself. Make sure the
people in the stack are aware of what you're doing. Stacks will produce
results in one way or another.
Sometimes more powerfully, than you may think or intend. You may put
inanimate things in a stack after the initial 10 people, but please don't put them
before. Some ideas for inanimate things.
• The Earth
• Your Home
• Your Car
• One's Life as a whole
• Cities
• Communities
• Crystal Grids
• Guides and Helpers
• Ancestors & Descendants
You may also send energy to concepts, situations or events. Here are
some examples.
• Peace on Earth
• Global situations.
• Doctor Usui to help discover Reiki.
• Relief Efforts in Natural Disasters
• Personal Relationships
110
GROUP DISTANT HEALING
Distant healing can be sent by a group of Reiki 2 and Master practitioners with powerful
results.
1. To start everyone in the group draws the HON-SHA-ZE-SHO-NEN symbol then chants its
name 3 times and chants the name of the person to receive healing 3 times.
Spiral (clockwise spiral) each person sits facing the back of the person in front of
them and sends.
• Reiki to them with their hands a few inches from the person's back.
• The outer end person sends the group Reiki to the person in need.
The circle method is similar to the spiral method except the person who is to receive
the healing is imagined to be in the center of the circle.
• Everyone in the group sends to the center of the circle.

THE ANTAHKARANA SYMBOL
The Antahkarana, or the psychic bridge, is the connecting bridge between the 6th and 7th chakras. It
is the link between your personality and your higher self.
As you develop these higher chakras, this psychic bridge is strengthened, and your intuitive powers
will increase.
The Antahkarana is a symbol that has its own consciousness and works with your aura and chakras. It
is often referred to as a Tibetan symbol. It is used in an ancient Tibetan meditation method, where the
Antahkarana is placed in an oval bowel filled with water where the bowl symbolizes the cosmic egg.
Its healing effect depends on what you need at the time of use. Since it is directed by the Higher Self,
it always has a beneficial effect and can never be misused or used to cause harm.
The symbol can be placed under a Reiki table. It can also be placed on the wall or it can be held
against your body with the print facing the area that needs healing.
113
ZONAR SYMBOL
This symbol is pronounced "zoe nar". It was channelled by Marcy Miller and purportedly given to
Marcy from Sai Baba during a meditation.
This symbol is thought to work with past lives. The theory being that the cells carry the memory of
trauma, and ideas from both this life and previous lives. This symbols is thought to help us work
through these issues and release them and the associated memories and behaviour. Because of this
it is thought to work well with child abuse. It is also to help with things or formulate issues not clearly
defined, and allow us to open ourselves to the awareness of these issues and our humanity. Lastly it
is used for dimensional access. The specific technique for using Zonar is to connect to the loving
compassionate energy of the divine source, which is infinite, and use this infinite love for healing.
114
Zonar is a good symbol to use at the beginning of a treatment as it prepares the client to
receive deep healing. It also reduces or eliminates the pain associated with emotional healing
by creating a kind of spiritual anaesthetic effect.
Zonar seems to have a psychically anaesthetic effect, which helps us go deeper into ourselves,
reaching into our emotions at a core level and preparing us to heal more deeply. Zonar
prepares the client for the healing offered by Halu.
115
HALU SYMBOL
HALU - Halu means love, truth, and beauty. It can also mean harmony.
This symbol is pronounced "hay-lou" and It was channelled by Kathleen and Marcy and was given
purportedly by Sai baba during a meditation. It is supposed to be a deeper ray of healing. This symbol
is an amplification of Zonar.
To draw this:
Draw a standard Zonar, then add the two lines into the center and complete the pyramid on top.
116
Halu is thought to be more powerful than Zonar and works in higher dimensions and at deeper levels.
Halu is said to restore balance. It is thought to bring about "deep healing" at causal and emotional
levels.
Like the Usui Reiki symbol, Sei Hei Ki, it is supposed to help dissolve negative patterns in the
unconscious mind that we use to keep ourselves from truth, and also to break up delusion and denial.
It is also used to open a channel to higher consciousness. It can be used to repel and dispel psychic
attack and psychological attacks.
HALU – Review….
Zonar doubled in intensity. Heals delusion, denial, and the unconscious. Halu breaks negative
thought patterns and repels psychic attack.
117
HEALS SEXUAL AND PHYSICAL ABUSE ISSUES
Trauma such as physical and sexual abuse is very painful. It is not always necessary to relive
these experiences and re-experience the trauma in order to heal.
1. The compassionate action of Halu (when used with Zonar) helps us release the energy from
the abuse or pain without needing to re-experience the trauma.
2. These issues can often be processed by simply having an understanding of what took place,
without a need to feel all the emotions and pain.
3. However, since the higher power is guiding the healing process, it will decide if feeling the pain
is necessary to complete the healing and allow this to happen when it is appropriate for the
client.
4. When this happens, it usually takes place with only a small part of the pain coming into
consciousness, just enough for the person to understand the feelings that are being healed.
Remember that the best way to deal with psychic attack is to accept that we have created this
experience for ourselves from within ourselves as a way to know ourselves more completely
and to heal.
1. Focus on what you or the client is doing to create/attract the psychic attack and send Halu
Reiki energy to it to heal and release it.
2. Follow your inner guidance when doing this and allow yourself to learn as you heal.
3. Halu will guide you to become a better healer.
118
HARTH SYMBOL
Harth is a symbol for the heart from which healing and love flow. It is used to heal the heart and issues
of the heart, and helps one develop (compassion). It is useful and helpful in healing relationships.
Harth restores our love of life and for the things we do. Harth is good to use for addictions of all kinds.
119
HOW TO DRAW: Draw the cross with the first line going down. Then draw the left and right
sides and then the circles.
HEALS ADDICTIONS
If a person is addicted to something, it usually means that they have a problem with their heart.
A person will turn to drugs, alcohol, or destructive relationships and behaviours because there
is something in their life that isn't fulfilling the love that they need.
1. Harth will restore the balance within their heart so that they love life. When a person loves life it
is very unlikely that they are going to become addicted to something that is harmful. If you love
yourself, you will take good care of yourself.
2. Use the Usui distance symbol to send Harth to the addiction.
120
CONTACT SPIRITUAL BEINGS
Harth can be used to receive blessings from spiritual beings, such as Mother Mary, Kuan Yin, and
Avalokiteshvara, who are the embodiment of compassionate action.
1. Use the Usui distance symbol and send Harth to these spiritual beings.
2. Ask for their blessing so your heart will be healed and you will be better able to help others.
3. You will discover that love is the greatest power.
"The Original Reiki Ideals" state that Reiki is "The secret art of inviting happiness," and Harth
is a symbol that can do just that.
1. So use Harth frequently to create love in your heart for yourself, other people, or for anything in
life worth doing, having or being.
After you have used Zonar, Halu, and Harth and are ready to complete the treatment, you can
go on to Rama.
121
RAMA / MARA SYMBOL
RAMA - Rama translated means abiding joy and is interchangeable with Ram or God.
This symbol is pronounced "ra ma". It was channelled by Kellie-ray Marine.
If you initiate the feet with Rama and the power symbol, it will open the feet chakras, and connect with
the earth energy bringing balance and increasing the amount of Ki energy channelled.
122
HEALS LOWER CHAKRAS
The use of Rama opens and heals the lower chakras, helping a person be more fully present, alert
and focused. Often in healing work we encounter people who have a large portion of their energy
outside their bodies.
1. By using Rama on the client’s feet, the feet chakras are opened and this will pull the person
back into their body.
2. This technique also pulls negative energy or blockages from anywhere in the persons energy
system out the feet and can often release pain.
3. It is great for grounding.
123
MANIFESTS MATERIAL GOALS
1. The process of manifestation involves being able to connect with universal creative
consciousness through our spiritual body, then understand it as thoughts in the mental body,
become excited about it in our emotional bodies and take action on it with our physical bodies.
2. Harmony between the upper and lower chakras is important if we are to have a meaningful
effect on the world.
3. Rama acts like a healing magnet, harmonizing the upper with the lower chakras and pulling the
creativity of higher consciousness through our whole system so that we can manifest it in our
physical world. Archangel Michael's presence and that of other enlightened beings can often
be felt when utilizing Rama to manifest goals that will help others.
COMPLETES A SESSION
1. During a healing session, a person often leaves their body so that the guides can work more
easily on the energy system to facilitate healing.
2. Also, while out of the body, a person often receives new insights and guidance about their
situation, but this does not always come into consciousness.
3. Rama can be used at the end of a session to bring the client back into their body, grounding
them to the earth and allowing any insights received to come into consciousness so they can
take action on them.
124
KRIYA SYMBOL
GROUNDING
To use Kriya for grounding, visualize each side of the symbol going down each leg.
1. Place the upper part in your hips with the spirals in your feet.
2. This will create a strong connection to the earth and bring your consciousness more fully into
your body.
3. This will also help guide your path through life in a very practical way.
MANIFESTS GOALS
Kriya can be used to manifest goals.
1. One way to work with Kriya to manifest goals is to write your goal on a piece of paper in the
form of an affirmation. For example, if you would like to have a Reiki practice where you see 20
people a week, you would create an affirmation like: "I have 20 Reiki clients every week."
2. Then draw Kriya on the paper and hold it between your hands and do Kriya Reiki on it
everyday.
3. At the same time, you must be working to create your goal by creating a plan and acting on it.
4. If your goal is for your highest good, you will find valuable "coincidences" occurring that help
you manifest your goal.
5. Kriya Reiki will reach out to all the people and resources needed to help you create your goal
and make it a joy to manifest.
CREATES PRIORITIES
1. Kriya is helpful if you feel stuck with many thoughts and have difficulty focusing on what you
need to do.
2. It will help you sort out your priorities and focus on the things that are important to manifest in
your life now.
3. It also helps you focus your energy on them.
Following Zonar, Halu, Harth, Rama, Gnosa, and Kriya, are Iava and Shanti.
126
SHANTI SYMBOL
BRINGS PEACE
1. Creates trust in life.
2. Shanti can work with our connection to the flow of life allowing us to heal the past, create
harmony in the present and release the future. This process of letting go creates an
effortlessness to our living process, allowing us to enjoy life more deeply.
3. People who have a tendency to worry because things seem to have gone wrong in the past
often grow to expect things to go wrong in the future.
4. Since Shanti helps heal the past, it brings peace into the now and helps free us from worry
about the future.
HEALS INSOMNIA
1. Shanti releases fear and creates a gentle peaceful feeling. Because of this, it can help heal
insomnia and help you get a good night’s sleep.
2. It is also good for healing nightmares.
INCREASES CLAIRVOYANCE
1. Meditate with the point of Shanti going into the third eye.
2. Maintain this single-pointed focus and it will clear the brow chakra, enhancing clairvoyance.
Following Zonar, Halu, Harth, Rama, Gnosa, Kriya, and Iava is Shanti.
128
IAVA SYMBOL
___________________________________________________________
129
IAVA - The symbol balances the four elements.
This symbol is pronounced "ee-ah-vah". It was channelled by Catherine Mills.
When drawing the four small loops, say "Earth" with the first, "Water" with the second, "Wind or Air"
with the third, and "Fire" with the fourth.
1. Iava helps pierce the veil of illusion that is our conditioned thoughts and beliefs. By doing this
we see things as they are, not as our conditioned beliefs would lead us to believe. In this
oneness of mind, we are free to respond to another in the moment rather that react from past
conditionings.
2. Iava can heighten awareness to reality.
3. It is used to help you to take action on your own plans.
4. Iava is used for planetary healing.
5. It will help to heal the Earth (situations, places, disasters, disease, etc.).
CLARIFIES REALITY
Claim your power. Sometimes there are others in our lives that try to control how we live. If we
have a goal or a way of being that we want to create for ourselves, but there are those who
don't want us to, it can make our achievements more difficult. Our plans and goals can become
clouded by the negative intentions of others. This could be happening now, or there could be a
residue of controlling thoughts and feelings in the subconscious mind left over from the past.
This often happens because we have given up some of our power to those around us because
of guilt and fear.
1. Iava helps you break free from others’ expectations and projections and take back your power
so you can create your life the way you want it to be.
HEALS CO-DEPENDENCE.
Sometimes people make unconscious agreements with those they are close to that are not
healthy and actually encourage each other to remain unhealed. These unconscious
agreements prevent those involved from improving themselves…
1. Iava helps you heal co-dependence allowing you to break free from an unhealthy sense of
responsibility you may have with those you are close to.
EMPOWERS GOALS
1. Iava helps us act on our plans even if others are not happy with our decisions.
2. It helps us connect with the joyous outcome of our goals, which empowers us to achieve them.
Following Zonar, Halu, Harth, Rama, Gnosa, Kriya, and Iava is Shanti.
130
GNOSA SYMBOL
131
GNOSA - The word "Gnosa" is derived from the Greek "Gnosis" meaning mystical and
spiritual knowledge acquired through feeling and prophecies from God.
1. Gnosis is also the belief that God reveals equally to all creation, and through personal intimate
connections.
2. Gnosa links you more strongly with the higher self, and brings higher consciousness into the
physical body.
3. Gnosa increases awareness of dimensional levels of self. It can create a spinning merkaba at
the heart center uplifting consciousness.
4. It is through Gnosis that we develop the oneness with the compassion of God.
____________________________________________
HOW TO DRAW: Draw the propellers first, then the triangle, ending with the circle.
Gnosa heals the mind and links you more strongly with the Higher Self.
HEALS COMMUNICATION
1. By improving mental clarity, Gnosa helps us organize our minds and improve communication.
2. It is useful for both speaking and writing.
3. It can also be used for research projects, guiding you to the best sources of information and
helping you comprehend their meaning.
INCREASES CREATIVITY
1. Gnosa brings the higher mind into our everyday consciousness, increasing clarity and inspiring
us with new ideas.
2. Gnosa adds depth to all our projects and connects us with those enlightened beings who can
guide us in our development and fulfillment.
Gnosa works well with Rama allowing the Higher Self to manifest on the physical plane.
Following Zonar, Halu, Harth, Rama, and Gnosa are Kriya, Iava, and Shanti.
132
OM SYMBOL
____________________________________________
133
OM - Om opens the crown chakra and if drawn above the head opens a pathway to God and
higher consciousness.
It represents All of creation working together as one unit. Think "As above So below", "All opposites
are identical in nature only different in degree". We are one and the understanding of such a concept-
the integrity of All life leads us greater understanding, better choices, happier life. Om cleans,
stabilizes and seals the aura. It brings in light, purifies, protects and connects us with God. It
represents creation, preservation and destruction. .
_________________________________________________________
1. The chanting of Om drives away all worldly thoughts and removes distraction and infuses new
vigour in the body.
2. When you feel depressed, chant Om fifty times and you will be filled with new vigour and
strength. The chanting of Om is a powerful tonic. When you chant Om, you feel you are the
pure, all pervading light and consciousness.
3. Those who chant Om will have a powerful, sweet voice. Whenever you take a stroll, you can
chant Om. You can also sing Om in a beautiful way. The rhythmic pronunciation of Om makes
the mind serene and pointed, and infuses the spiritual qualifications, which ensure self-
realization.
4. Those who do meditation of Om daily will get tremendous power. They will have lustre in their
eyes and faces.
134
JOH REI SYMBOL
MEANING: White Light
Joh Rei represents the God Source, or enlightenment, and corresponds to the Crown Chakra.
Universal energy, or the divine light, when focused on the spiritual body of an individual dispels
“clouds” or negativity, from the spiritual body and raises the spiritual vibration, thereby causing
reactions in the spiritual, mental and physical bodies. Through the process the spirit is uplifted and the
divine nature unfolds itself more and more, causing the finest spiritual qualities of the individual to
come to the fore. The mind is properly focused, relieving it from confusion.
When clouds are dispelled from the spiritual body, toxins in the physical body dissolve and are
eliminated to a large extent. Pain or discomfort felt by the individual is part of the purifying process and
Johrei accelerates this process, bringing it to an end more quickly than it would terminate otherwise.
The use of universal spiritual energy is not limited to human beings. Many plants which have been
weakened from insect blights, extremes of weather or other destructive forces have been revived
through Johrei, and the quality of the soil itself has been improved. When the seeds and the soil have
become sufficiently purified, a considerable improvement is seen in the quality and quantity of crops
too.
Any individual, when properly prepared, can focus this universal energy. The intensity may differ
according to the level of the individual’s awareness, but it is possible for any individual to focus it
effectively.
135
JOHREI SYMBOL
White Light
The Johrei Symbol gives off 2,520 electrons of White Light Vibration.
When put through a prism it is refracted into the 7 primary colors.
136
REIKI SYMBOLS…
THERE SEEMS TO BE a lot of controversy and confusion about the Reiki symbols. For a long
time, they were kept secret from everyone not initiated to the second level of Reiki. For
decades, Reiki teachers (following in the footsteps of Hawayo Takata) did not allow even their
students to keep written copies of the symbols! This led to many changes in the symbols over
time, from people not remembering them precisely; the imprecision was passed from
generation to generation of students, and compounded by each generation of teachers.
Compounding things even further, Usui Reiki began to mutate into other varieties. New flavours
of Reiki were born, seemingly as fast as flavours of ice cream -- and, building on what they
thought was the original model, the inventors of these new varieties added even more symbols.
At some point, a certain Reiki teacher blew the lid off the secrecy issue, by publishing a book
that exposed the Reiki symbols (many variations of them) for all to see! That, in itself, created
plenty of controversy. The Reiki world polarized, into those who applauded the exposure, and
those who thought it was sacrilege.
WHAT NO ONE (outside a small number of people in Japan) knew at that time was that the
Reiki symbols were not essential, or even necessary, in the first place! And that they were not
even introduced into the practice of Reiki, by Mikao Usui, until very near the end of his life.
Now, thanks mostly to a group of people in Japan, who learned Reiki in the early 1900s from
Usui himself, we know how the symbols came to be used in a way that Mikao Usui had never
used them, and how they came to be regarded with such mistaken importance.
The final 3 students that Usui taught were quite different than the others. They were military
officers, not accustomed to using Buddhist meditations or Shinto kotodama (as were his other
students) -- and so he gave them symbols instead. The symbols were to help these 3 students
connect with particular energetic aspects. The symbols were NOT used by Usui in his Reiju
empowerment procedure.
As it happened, at least one of these final students, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, did not learn the Reiju
procedure from Usui (who passed away before Hayashi was ready for it). It seems he learned it
later from another of Usui's students -- but then, in his own practice of Reiki, he replaced Reiju
with an empowerment ritual of his own.
Dr. Hayashi became, for whatever reason (and contrary to Mikao Usui's intentions), the self-
proclaimed standard-bearer of Reiki, after Usui's passing. And the other 2 final students --
Jusaburo Ushida (a.k.a. Gyuda) and Kan'ichi Taketomi -- became, respectively, the first and
second Presidents of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai ("Usui Reiki Healing Method Society").
Thus, the Reiki symbols were given an importance and a function they had not had for Mikao
Usui.
Years later yet, a Japanese-American named Hawayo Takata would become Hayashi's most
famous student. She would take the role of standard-bearer after Hayashi's passing -- and she
would pass on his method of giving Reiki empowerment (which came to be called
"attunement"), featuring the implanting of those famous Reiki symbols into the student's energy
field! Through Takata and her lineage, this "attunement" procedure of Reiki empowerment has
been the standard, worldwide, since the 1970s. Many variations have been born, and yet the
central element of almost all seems to remain the implantation of the Reiki symbols.
137
If you view the symbols as "training wheels" on a bicycle (as the Usui Gakkai recommends),
and if you let go of them once they had served their purpose, they will not cause a problem.
They would be no more than artefacts of our journey (as they were intended to be in the first
place); at the very worst, no more than "space junk" in the aura, like spent rocket casings
orbiting the moon.
Of course, had the simple elegance of Usui Reiju merely been retained, instead of replaced by
more complicated "attunement" procedures (based on the implanting of symbols), this "space
junk" would not even be there for us to contemplate; and, had the Reiki symbols not been
imbued with a mistaken sense of power and magic and secrecy, they would be much easier for
people to let go. In fact, had Hawayo Takata found her way to another one of Usui's students
than Dr. Hayashi, the world at large would not even have learned of Reiki symbols!
THE MORAL of the story, then: Reiki symbols were intended only to be "fingers pointing at the
moon" (and the sun, and the earth: ^ ). Let's not mistake the finger for what it's pointing at! Reiki
symbols are not Reiki. It's much better to get beyond the symbols, to the Source.
138
MOVING PAST THE NEED FOR SYMBOLS – Another view…
In Usui Shiki Ryoho in the Takata lineage, the Reiki Symbols are an integral, primary part of the
system. It is now clear that the symbols were developed by Usui later in the development of the
system. This was done to aid those with little energy work who had trouble connecting to the energy
directly.
The original empowerment used by Usui was “Reiju” and used no symbols. Chujiro Hayashi increased
use and emphasis on the symbols and their importance in the system became greater. They were now
a primary part of the system. This was done because the movement was from daily Hatsurei ho and
frequent Reiju, to a system that could be learned quickly.
The symbols also now became part of the empowerment system and the process was changed from
empowerment to attunement. Symbols work in a traditional stimulus-response fashion. The act of
drawing, visualizing or saying the name of the symbol (Stimulus) gives us the response of connecting
to the energy.
The goal for those that learned the symbols in Usui’s Reiki Ryoho was to use them to become
intimately acquainted with the energy and then to move part reliance on them. They are like training
wheels on a bicycle, you use them while needed and then take them off. This is very different in
application and philosophy from the western Hayashi-Takata lineage of Usui Shiki Ryoho where
symbols are revered and a major part of the system.
These days there are many different attitudes and beliefs regarding the symbols. Some masters
believe them to be “sacred”, while others consider them “secret”, some believe them secret and
sacred, while still others consider them neither secret nor sacred.
There is a group of masters that believe the symbols have their own power, and on and on. The
symbols are neither secret nor sacred. They are an important part of a system that helps train the
mind to work with the energy. Use them to help you focus. Meditate with them in your daily Hatsurei
ho or other meditation. There is a symmetry and wisdom to them. But always remember, in a
Buddhist sense, the symbols represent an attachment and as much as they can help you grow with
the system and energy, they will also eventually limit you.
The question many students ask is “how do I move past the need to use the symbols. This is not as
hard as it might first seem. It is not suggested to do this until you have practiced Reiki for at least a
year or more past the master level. This ensures that you have been using Reiki consistently over a
period of time sufficient to for you to have developed the skills necessary to do this. Some people
always will use the symbols, while others quickly move past them. Both are correct and appropriate,
and you must make the decision regarding this.

REIKI GLOSSARY
With every area of learning there is usually a vocabulary that is used by people in the system
to more effectively communicate ideas, concepts practices, and to make the discussion of
subjects in that topic easier to understand. Reiki is no different. For absolute beginners
different terms like “attunements”, “symbols”, “Usui Shiki Ryoho” may be confusing at first.
This Glossary is an aid to assist you in understanding the many different concepts and
practices in Reiki quickly.
A
ADVANCED REIKI TRAINING - (also known as Level IIIa, Reiki Master Practitioner, or “Personal
Mastery Level” in the Usui/Tibetan Systems) A collection of new age techniques and pseudo-Tibetan
practices added to the Hayashi-Takata System of Reiki in the west. Advanced Reiki Training
generally consists of Reiki Crystal Grids, a healing attunement, the Antahkarana symbol, Reiki Guide
Meditation, Psychic Surgery, Reiki Symbol Meditation. Most closely associated with Raku Kai Reiki
and William Rand’s Usui Tibetan Reiki.
ANTAHKARANA SYMBOL - A symbol consisting of a cube shape with 7’s on its face surfaces.
Presumably of Tibetan origin although this cannot be determined. Claimed to have panacea type
effects on all areas of healing. This is used in a specific meditation as well as on “master frequency
generator plates” developed by Ralf Jensen.
ATTUNEMENTS - Attunements are a technique common to all forms of reiki in the west. They use a
process of placing the Reiki Symbols and energy into the meridians, aura or energy body of the
recipient of the attunement process. Some Attunement systems focus on placing the energy in the
Chakras. Attunements empower people to use reiki on themselves and others and facilitate a
connection to the reiki source.
B
BEAMING - Beaming is a technique of distant healing. It is a line of sight distant reiki sending to a
person. Although a distant healing technique, this is generally done in the presence of another when
hands on reiki touch might be inappropriate (abuse cases, burn victims). Beaming is common to other
healing systems such as in the Johrei Fellowship.
BLOOD EXCHANGE - The blood exchange is a reiki method of cleansing the blood of toxins. It is
thought that these practices stimulate the body to produce new blood cells and to stimulate the
meridians effected.
BREATH OF THE FIRE DRAGON (See also “Violet Breath”) - A special breathing technique used to
place the reiki symbol in the crown of the student during an attunement. It is also used in Raku Kai to
develop the microcosmic orbit and strengthen the reiki channel and promote health.
BYOSEN (See Also “Scanning”) - A process where the hands of the reiki master move over the body
of the recipient to determine if there are weaknesses, changes, or areas in need of treatment. There
are various methods used. This is called Byosen Reikian ho in the Reiki ho practices in Japan.
140
C
CHAKRAS - Chakras are energy vortices on the energy body that comprise part of the energy
system. They are Indo-Tibetan in origin and were added to reiki in the Raku Kai system of Reiki.
They are currently commonly taught in many forms of reiki. Chakras were not part of the Japanese
Reiki Practices or Mrs. Takata’s practices.
CHO KU REI - The First Reiki Symbol. Cho Ku Rei is commonly called the “Power” symbol in the
Western Styles of Reiki (Usui Shiki Ryoho) but is called “Focus” in Traditional Japanese Reiki and in
Japan. Some meanings for the symbol might be “God is here”, or “put the power here”.
D
DAI KO MIO - (also known as the Usui Master Symbol) The Dai Ko Mio is the Master symbol used in
the all Reiki Systems. It is the symbol for the Ultimate Source of Love, Light, Harmony and Healing. It
is sometimes translated to mean the “Great Shining Light”.
DISTANT ATTUNEMENTS - An Attunement that uses the Reiki Distant Symbol (Hon Sha Ze Sho
Nen) to perform the attunement on someone not physically present. A logical extension of Reiki
Distant Healing and the Distant Symbol.
DISTANT HEALING - This is sending Reiki energy for the purpose of healing someone not physically
present. This uses the Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen (Distant Symbol) and a variety of techniques such as the
photo technique, reiki stacks, healing lists, or teddy bear technique for a point of focus.
DISTANT SYMBOL (See - Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen) - The Third Reiki Symbol. The Hon Sha Ze Sho
Nen is a combination of Japanese Kanji (symbol language) that can mean “no past, no present, no
future” which represents the timeless original purity of the source of all and the spirit of man. A
translation might be “To act in the Realization of Absolute Beingness” (Thanks to Gabriel Shivers for
that definition).
DUMO (also known as “Tibetan Master Symbol”) - The Dumo is a “Tibetan” Symbol that is part of the
William Rand Usui/Tibetan System as well as used by various Independent Reiki Masters including
Diane Stein. This symbol is also referred to as the “Tibetan Dai Ko Mio”. This symbol is thought to
unify the body and mind. It is reported to work with fire in the base chakra by igniting the Sacred flame
(i.e., the Kundalini energy). It is believed to pull negative energy and disease from the body and mind.
E
ENERGY EXCHANGES – In order to balance the giving and receiving flow and exchange must be
made in dollars, or some type of item.
141
F
FIRE SERPENT (See Also Nin Giz Zida) - A “Tibetan” symbol used in the Usui/Tibetan tradition. The
Fire Serpent represents the “Sleeping Serpent” coiling at the base of the spine. The fire Serpent is
used during an attunement with horizontal line over top of crown, snaking down the spine, and
spiraling clockwise at base of spine; grounds energy into lower (feet to tailbone) body. By reversing
the spiral (counter-clockwise) starting at base of spine, snaking up spine and ending with horizontal
line over the crown; it pushes energy up to four upper chakras. It does not allow energy to escape out
of crown chakra. The fire serpent connects and opens all chakras. It opens the central channel
allowing the flow of Kundalini fire. It can be used in healing or meditation for more balance and
receptivity.
G
GAKKAI - The Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai was the original organization that Mikao Usui Founded which
continues to practice and teach Reiki in an unbroken line since the passing of Mikao Usui. The
Gakkai’s practices are referred to as Reiki Ryoho, or “Reiho”. The emphasis is more on a spiritual
awakening and healing. The system takes longer to learn than its counterpart in the west. .
GLOBAL REIKI MASTERS ASSOCIATION (GRMA) - The Global Reiki Masters Association (GRMA)
is an International Association of Reiki Masters. The members are a diverse group who respect all
Reiki Practices. The GRMA tries to provide truthful information, training, and empowerment about
Reiki. The GRMA is dedicated to spreading the Gift of Reiki throughout the world to all that need and
wish to have the Gift of Reiki in their lives. The GRMA was founded by Joseph “Running Wolf” Sparti
so that all the wish to learn Reiki are able to do so free of the control of others. The GRMA sponsers
Free Worldwide Distant Master Attunements several times per year. These Singular Master
Empowerments are performed by the membership of the GRMA.
H
HAND POSITIONS - Hand positions refer to the specific hand positions used when performing a Reiki
treatment. The reiki practitioner places their hands on specified positions and lets the reiki flow into the
recipient’s body at these points to facilitate healing. It appears that in Usui’s Original Practices there
were five positions and then he used Reji and Byosen to sense and scan for other locations to be
treated. In Traditional Japanese Reiki, which is of the Hayashi line, there are seven positions. In the
Hayashi-Takata line there are twelve. Other reiki systems may use different numbers of positions.
HATSUREI HO - This is a meditation and breathing technique that was used by Usui. It is still used in
Reiki Ryoho as practiced by the Gakkai. It is a technique that empowers the practitioner by increasing
and enhancing their reiki channel and their connection to the reiki source. It is also to help the
practitioner grow spiritually. It includes a self-cleansing ritual as well as two different meditation
practices.
HAYASHI (CHUJIRO HAYASHI, DR. HAYASHI) - Dr. Chujiro Hayashi was made a Reiki Master in 1925
and was a student of Usui. Dr. Hayashi was a retired officer from the Japanese Navy. He opened a
Reiki clinic, which was more along the lines of a medical model. Dr. Hayashi made some modifications
in the system including a heavier emphesis on the symbols and attunements, and most likely
developed the 12 standard hand positions from in use in the west today. These hand positions allowed
Reiki to be given by several practitioners at once. This group healing technique was used in his clinic.
He was the teacher of Hawayo Takata.
142
HEALING ATTUNEMENTS - A non-initiatory attunement technique thought to “increase healing”
developed by William Rand. Although the procedure is thought to not initiate the recipient into reiki as
a practitioner, some masters have concern over using this procedure because they found that
students retained the ability to do reiki and had no training.
HEALING CRISIS - A concept found in pranic healing and other healing approaches that some
masters have added into reiki. The concept of a healing crisis is that the recipient of a reiki treatment
or attunement can experience a “release” and go into an emotional or physical “crisis”. The concept is
not widely accepted by most masters.
HUI YIN - An “energy cranking” technique used in attunements. It was added into Raku Kai Reiki and
is part of William Rand’s Usui/Tibetan practices and Diane Stein’s Work. It is more commonly known
in chi kung as the Microcosmic orbit.
HON SHA ZE SHO NEN - The Third Reiki Symbol. The Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen is a combination of
Japanese Kanji (symbol language) that can mean “no past, no present, no future” which represents
the timeless original purity of the source of all and the spirit of man. A translation might be “To act in
the Realization of Absolute Beingness” (Thanks to Gabriel Shivers for that definition).
I
INDEPENDENT REIKI MASTERS - Independent Reiki Masters is a term used to describe people who
are Reiki Masters that are not aligned with a particular school or approach. They might use an
eclectic approach with techniques from many schools. The vast majority of Reiki Masters in the west
are Independent Reiki Masters.
INTENT - Reiki is an Intent driven system. Intent is the key to using the Reiki energy in healing and
attunements.
J
JOHREI - Johrei is a religion or spiritual practice that was developed by Mokichi Okada, a
contemporary of Mikao Usui. He founded Sei Kai Kyu Sei Kyo better known as Johrei and as the
JohreiÒ Fellowship. LIke Reiki, Johrei also uses Reiju to empower its followers. A “Johrei Reiki” was
developed from Raku Kai Reiki using the White Light (Johrei) symbol as part of its practices and
attunements. The name was changed to Vajra Reiki after some legal entanglements over the use of
the word Johrei.
K
KARUNA REIKIÒ - Karuna ReikiÒ is a healing system founded by William Rand from his learning
new symbols and Kathleen Milner’s healing system which became Tera MaiÔ Reiki and Seichem. It is
claimed to be “higher frequency” that Usui Reiki. It was formerly known as Sai Baba Reiki but the
name changed due to legal complications from using the Sai Baba name. The system is Trade
Marked, controlled and regulated through the International Center for Reiki Studies in Michigan, USA.
143
KARUNA KI - Karuna Ki is a Compassionate Heart Energy and Healing System developed by Vinny
Amador from work with Tera Mai and Karuna. It shares common symbols with Karuna Reiki and Tera
Mai Reiki but adds many new meditations, mudras and other techniques. The system is based on the
cultivation of the compassionate heart.
KI KO - The name for Japanese Traditional Chi Kung (Qi Gong) Practices. Usui used many chi kung
practices in the development of Reiki.
L
LEVELS IN REIKI (See Also - Sho-den, Oku-den, Shinpi-den) - Reiki is traditionally taught in the West
in three levels. Level I - Generally includes the Reiki Principles, the hand positions, Reiki History, and
you receive the Reiki attunements. In traditional schools there are four attunements done at the first
level. In other schools, including the Tibetan/Usui schools, there may be a combined level I
attunement. Some schools teach that Reiki I heals on the physical level.
LEVEL II - Generally includes the three Reiki Symbols (Focus, Harmony, and Connection),
Mental/Emotional Healing, Distant Healing, and another attunement. The Tibetan/Usui school adds
the techniques scanning and beaming. Some schools teach Reiki II is “emotional healing”.
LEVEL III (Master/Teacher Level) - Generally includes the Usui Master Symbol (empowerment
symbol) and its meaning and application, The attunement process and practice in its application, and
how to teach others. Some schools teach that Reiki III is for Spiritual healing. Some traditions (the
Usui/Tibetan Schools and other various Independent Practitioners) have added a Level IIIa in between
Level II and the Master/Teacher Level. Level IIIa is often called Advanced Reiki Training (ART). Some
of the techniques that might be included here are: Reiki Meditation using the symbols, using the
symbols for manifesting goals, Reiki and crystals, making a Reiki crystal grid, Reiki meditation to meet
you “reiki guide”, Reiki Healing Attunement, the Tibetan Antahkarana symbol and a meditation for its
use, the Hui Yin position and the Violet Breath.
M

is also thought that he may have studied a Japanese form of Chi Kung called Ki Ko and other oriental
healing systems.
144
N
NIN GIZ ZIDA (See Also Fire Serpent) - A “Tibetan” symbol used in the Usui/Tibetan tradition. The
Fire Serpent represents the “Sleeping Serpent” coiling at the base of the spine.
NON-TRADITIONAL REIKI - Reiki in the Hayashi-Takata (Usui Shiki Ryoho Tradition) that has been
modified in some way. This might include distant attunements, additions of crystals, Angels, other
symbols, different attunements, and other things. The masters are generally Independent Reiki
Masters.
O

Ishikuro (one of Takata’s 22 masters). The system incorporated Ralf Jensen’s Master Frequency
Generator Plates, The “Tibetan” practices of the Hui Yin, and Breath of the Fire Dragon (i.e., Violet
Breath), the Tibetan Symbols (Raku, Dumo, and the Fire Serpent), the O Sui CHing Water Ritual, and
Iris Ishikuro’s use of the White Light Symbol (Johrei). This school has influenced or led to the
developement of the Usui/Tibetan Schools, Vajra Reiki, as well as Karuna ReikiÒ and Tera MaiÔ
Reiki.
RADIANCE TECHNIQUE- A school of Reiki developed by Barbara Weber Ray, who was one of
Takata’s 22 Masters. Barbara claimed that she had information from Takata that was not given to the
other masters. This school has also been known as Real Reiki. It originally had only three levels, but
currently has six.
145
REIHO - A shortened name for Reiki Ryoho or Reiki ho. It refers to practices and the system used in
the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai.
REIJI - Reiji is the ability to find or spot imbalances in the body. It develops naturally as you practice
Reiki. Consistent practice in healing others leads to the ability to be guided to the cause of the
recipient’s problem. This knowledge will be known even before scanning the person’s body Reiki -
Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is a system of Enlightenment and a Hands on Healing art developed in
the early 1900’s by Mikao Usui in Japan. It is an art that is passed from Master to student. The word
Reiki comes from two Japanese words - Rei and Ki, meaning universal life energy. The term “reiki” is
used to describe both the energy and the Usui system of using it. The original system by Usui was
called Usui Reiki Ryoho. There are many variant’s of reiki being practiced these days. Included in this
list might be Usui Shiki Ryoho, “Traditional Reiki” of the Takata-Furumoto line as practiced in America,
Traditional Japanese Reiki developed from Hayashi’s students in Japan and practiced in Canada,
Various Non-Traditional Reiki Styles practiced by Independent Reiki Masters, Usui-Tibetan Reiki,
Tibetan-Usui Reiki, Raku Kai Reiki, Tera Mai™ Reiki, Angelic Reiki and many others.
REIJU - The original empowerment used by Mikao Usui to pass on the reiki energy. Reiju developed
into the Attunements that are used in Usui Shiki Ryoho and in all western reiki systems.
REIKI ALLIANCE - An organization formed in the Western World by Mrs. Takata’s 22 masters
following her death. The organization was formed by Mrs. Takata’s granddaughter, Mrs. Phyllis
Furumoto. The Alliance claims to represent “Traditional” Reiki. Its practices represent the Hayashi-
Takata lineage. Mrs. Furumoto went from forming the Alliance to calling herself “Grandmaster” of
Reiki and lately the “Spiritual” Lineage holder. The Alliance maintains a requirement that the master
level should cost Ten Thousand Dollars. An attempt was made by the Alliance in 1997 to trademark
the name “Reiki” and Usui Shiki Ryoho, which failed in most countries.
REIKI CIRCLE - A group reiki practice where reiki is shared.
REIKI CRYSTAL GRIDS - A technique that charges crystals with Reiki and then places them in a
geometric design. The purpose is to create a protective grid or to use it to send continuous healing. It
is most commonly taught in the Usui/Tibetan Schools, and is a part of the Level IIIa curriculum. It is
an add-on technique to the system in the Western Reiki practices.
REIKI ETHICS - A set of guidelines for the personal and professional conduct of reiki practitioners. An
example might be not sending distant reiki without permission. These vary from Master to Master and
School to School.
REIKI GUIDES - A belief that there are specific “guides” or spirits that works with Reiki and individual
practitioners. Some refer to these as “Ascendant Masters”, “Spirits”, or “Guides”. The belief in them
varies to beings that help with Reiki to beliefs like Diane Stein’s that the Reiki Guides do the
attunements and facilitate treatments. This is an add-on to the system in the western world that was
popularized by Diane Stein in her book “Essential Reiki” and is taught as part of William Rand’s Level
IIIa class.
REIKI HISTORY - The stories of Mikao Usui and the development of Reiki. There are several
versions from the Christianized version told by Mrs. Takata that is used in the Reiki Alliance to the
historically accurate version that you can find in books like Frank Arjava Petter’s “Reiki Fire”. Most
generally contain the thematic elements of Mikao Usui searching for a system of healing, meditating
on Mt. Kurama, becoming enlightened, discovering he could heal, and starting a school to teach
others to heal themselves. But, according to the Japanese version, Usui was a Buddhist and
businessman who through a series of life altering events discovered the Reiki energy.
REIKI MASTER - The original term for a Reiki Teacher in the Western World in the Usui Shiki Ryoho
Tradition.
146

Reiki Master attunement but are not given the Level III Master symbols or instructions for attuning
others. This term is common in the Usui/Tibetan Traditions.
REIKI MASTER TEACHER - A term in for Masters in schools that have a Level IIIa and Level IIIb
dichotomy. It refers to those that have completed the Level IIIb and know the Reiki master symbols
and how to attune others. This term is common in the Usui/Tibetan Traditions. In the Japanese
tradition and within the Buddhist schools, our master level is considered the first steps or the first level
in the Reiki journey.
REIKI PRINCIPLES - A series of five principles written by the Meiji Emperor and used by Usui in Reiki
Ryoho. There are many different sets of these. These are designed to help empower the student and
to bring about an awakened mental and spiritual state. The most accurate translation might be, “The

anger, do not worry. Be Grateful and Do your work with appreciation. Be kind to all living things. In the
morning and at night, with hands held in prayer, Think this in your mind, chant this with your mouth.
REIKI STACKS - A technique used for sending distant reiki. The recipients and inanimate objects or
situations that are to receive reiki are placed on a list. Reiki is send to all on the list. Users of the
technique are warned by its developer, Reiki Master Anthony Glenn Agee, to not make the stack more
than 10 people because he believes the energy multiplies or increases the higher you go up the list.
(Other Masters do not find this to be the case). It is believed that you can “save” stacks to use at a
later time.
REIKI TREATMENT - Receiving Reiki from a Reiki practitioner for the intent and purpose of healing.
It generally consists of a practitioner placing their hands on various hand positions on the recipient’s
body and takes about 35 to 60 minutes in person. It can also refer to distant reiki treatment.
S
SCANNING (SEE ALSO “BYOSEN”) - A process where the hands of the reiki master move over the
body of the recipient to determine if there are weaknesses, changes, or areas in need of treatment.
There are various methods used. This is called Byosen Reikian ho in the Reiki ho practices in Japan.
SEICHIM REIKI - Seichim was discovered by Patrick Ziegler in 1980 after a spiritual experience in the
Great Pyramid in Egypt and after receiving Sufi Empowerments from a Sufi Master. The Seichim
Reiki (also known as Renegade Reiki) system was developed by T’Om Seaman, Ken Lowry, and
Phoenix Summerfield.
SKHM - The current practice of Seichim by Patrick Ziegler. It is an empowerment type system that
utilizes a connection to the SKHM energy source and earth mixed together in the heart. It uses
“emotional release” as part of the process and as an indication that a connection has been made. It is
very similar to Druidic practices such as the Twin Powers Meditation taught in some Druid Schools.
SEI HEI KI (See Also - Mental/Emotional Symbol) - This is the second Reiki symbol. It is thought to
help heal on the mental and emotional levels in the body. It is also called the “Harmony” symbol in
Traditional Japanese Reiki.

It consisted of Kouketsu ho, Breathing out method (healing with the breath), The Reiki Group
Treatment, Healing by sending a thought or wish, the Reiki Circle, and how to perform Reiju or the
empowerment.
T
TAKATA (MRS. HAWAYO TAKATA) - A student of Chujiro Hayashi and the first Reiki Master to be
allowed to teach Reiki in the western world. She is the person most responsible for the spread of

Kai Reiki line, and also adds a number of “channeled” symbols and procedures that Kathleen believes
a “higher” being gave her on the “inner planes”.
TIBETAN REIKI - A school of Reiki that believes to have found the original practices from Tibet.
There are a number of additional levels as well as a number of different symbols that are a mix of
Sanskrit and Japanese Kanji. Tibetan Reiki is also used generically to describe Usui/Tibetan and
Tibetan/Usui Reiki.
TIBETAN MASTER SYMBOL (See Also “Dumo”) - The Dumo is a “Tibetan” Symbol that is part of the
William Rand Usui/Tibetan System as well as used by various Independent Reiki Masters including
Diane Stein.
TRADITIONAL JAPANESE REIKI - A school of Reiki developed by Dave King in Canada. Traditional

uses attunements and a heavy reliance on the reiki symbols.
USUI REIKI HIKKEI - This is the Usui Reiki Handbook that Mikao Usui Gave to his students. It
contained four Parts. Part one was the “Teachings of Usui Reiki Ryoho”. Part two was an
“Explanation of Instruction for the Public”. Part three was the Ryoho Shishon or “Method of Healing
Guide. Part four was the Meiji Renno Gyosei or “Poems of the Meiji Emperor”.
USUI REIKI RYOHO - This refers to the practice of Reiki as Usui practiced it and as it is still practiced
in Japan in a unbroken line since Usui. This system uses meditations, such as hatsurei ho, and other
practices so the person can develop spiritually and heal. Empowerments such as Reiju are used
(rather than attunements) to help the student clear the channels and to help pass on the reiki energy.
USUI/TIBETAN REIKI - A school of Reiki that built on the work of Arthur Robertson’s Raku Kai Reiki.
It has four levels being Level I, Level II, Level IIIa, and Level IIIb. The system added a number of
techniques such as using crystals, guides, healing attunements, as well as various “Tibetan” symbols.
This system was made popular by William Rand and Diane Stein.

HAND & FOOT CHAKRAS

REIKI TREATMENTS
1. Move the hands from Gassho (OR KANJI HAND POSITION) and let the palms be face up,
towards the ceiling as if you were holding precious water in them or a delicate butterfly rested on
them. Your hands are the sacred holding this loving gift. You have connected to reiki, feel the
energy in them.
2. Send the Reiki symbols into the palms of both hands.
3. Turn them over gently and lay them on yourself or the person you are treating. The pressure is
loving and gentle. Do not press. If there are reasons not to touch the other person (i.e.,
sensitivity to touch due to abuse, burns, wounds, risk of infection) then simply hold the hands
above the area to be treated.
Treating
1. Keep the hands on that position for 3 to 5 minutes. This is not a hard and fast rule but a simple
guideline. Some experience that the energy begins to flow after laying the hand down. The
energy will seem to increase for a time, and then ebb. You might feel this as tingles, or heat.
2. When it ebbs, move to the next position. There are times you feel nothing and in these cases
follow the 3 to 5 minute guideline.

REIKI QUICK TREATMENT
Tips:
1. Although there is not enough time to give a full treatment, do your best not to give the
impression that you are rushing a treatment.
2. Recommend that the client arrange for a full follow-up treatment at their earliest convenience.

TREATMENTS WITH NON-TRADITIONAL REIKI SYMBOLS
HEALING HAND POSITIONS:
Using these non-traditional reiki symbols (Karuna / Tera –Mai Reiki) works primarily on the emotional
level: physical healing does occur, but usually this is due to the emotional states, which have given
rise to the physical issues being resolved. As any of our feelings and emotions arise from mental
states, the simplest way to give Karuna is to concentrate on the head – the eyes, temples, occiput and
crown. For a more extensive treatment, you could concentrate on the main chakra points, or use the
Jin Shin Jyutsu sequence Harmonising With the Source of Life:
1. Place your right palm or fingers on the top of your Healee's head. This maintains energy
balance throughout the session.
2. Place your left fingertips between your Healee's eyebrows. This balances energy throughout
the body at a deep level, and improves mental functions.
3. Place the fingertips of your left hand (or just the tip of your left index finger) on the tip of your
Healee's nose. This balances physical energies at a more superficial level than the previous
position.
4. Place your left fingertips on your Healee's sternum (I find that placing them towards the upper
part of the sternum is most effective) this will help the breathing functions, pelvic girdle and
hips.
5. Move your left fingertips down to the base of your healee's sternum, just above the solar
plexus. This revitalises Life Energy at its central source within the body.
6. Now place your fingertips over the pubic bone, to balance the flow of energy throughout the
body, and strengthen the spine.
7. Remember your right hand? Leave your left fingertips over the pubic bone and place your right
fingers at the base of the spine in the area of the cocccyx, the tailbone. This will finish balancing
the flow of energy through your Healee's body, as well as improving circulation in the lower
body.
8. Now finish. Scan your hands over your Healee and go back to any areas, which you feel need
further attention. Be aware of any odd areas in their energy field, place your hands over these
areas, and allow Karuna to flow through.
153
NON-TRADITIONAL REIKI * HEALING SYMBOLS
Reiki and Karuna Ki Master Vince Amador has suggested this as a useful sequence of symbols to use
in a Karuna™ or Karuna Ki healing session:
Zonar
Zonar prepares your Healee by cleansing their energy field, connecting them with the Infinite
Source of Healing Energy and helping to resolve unresolved karmic issues.
Halu
Halu helps to break the emotional- and thought-patterns, which prevent your Healee from
seeing, and understanding their life as it truly is. This helps them to move on.
Harth
Harth assumes a central position in the Healing Symbols Sequence – in this case, it represents
the heart, the centre from which all love and healing flows. It also provides balance and
protection.
Rama
Rama is used at this point to ground your Healee, and to connect their Higher and Lower selves
on the Earth Plane.
Shanti
Shanti now helps your Healee to move forward – with Shanti energy, they release the past and
define their goals and path to their true future. The true future is that which is known by the
Higher Self, and is often different from the self-created ego-based ones, which often lead us
into problems or towards dissatisfaction.
Om
Finally, Om. Om seals the Healing Process with wholeness and golden light.
