Christmas splendor
Retail decorators explain what it takes to turn their stores into winter wonderlands.
t was a foggy Christmas night a few years ago. My husband David and I had just spent a long Christmas Eve at my parents house in Orangevale, as has become the tradition now that I split the holiday with both sides of my family. Our trunk full of freshly opened gifts, we made our way back home along East Roseville Parkway while listening to Christmas songs on the radio. We were talking excitedly, looking forward to Christmas morning and another day that would be spent with family when, out of the dark and hazy sky, what should appear but a tiny red dot, hovering above the rooftops. What is that? I pondered aloud.
It was too low to be a plane and it wasnt blinking, like a plane would. It was hovering strangely, seeming to keep pace with our car as we traveled along the surface streets. Then it became clear. The only possible explanation for this unidentified flying object of course! It had to be Santa Claus. David and I looked at each other and instantly became 6-year-olds, mouths agape and eyes wide with the realization
that we were watching Santa as he made his stops at childrens homes that Christmas Eve. David tried to keep his eyes on the road as I glued mine to the red dot in the sky. Eventually, however, the dot landed on the roof of Sutter Roseville Medical Center. It was probably someone in dire need of medical attention, and I pray they got it that night. But for several minutes, David and I truly believed. I hope you find something that turns you into a kid again this Christmas. Happy holidays!

So gentlemen looking to impress their lady might want to visit her store. Alicea says men feel comfortable shopping there amongst the lacy undergarments and fluffy robes. Yves keeps bra sizes and wish lists in the computer for easy shopping. Just because youve been married 20 years doesnt mean you cant spice it up, she says. And when all else fails, try a gift card. Block party: Granite Bay teen collects Legos for needy kids

Bailey Snow grew up with a love for playing with Legos because of how the toy stimulates a childs mind and constantly offers something new. Its not like a Barbie, where youre doing the same thing over and over, he said. You can do whatever the heck you want. Bailey, 15, wants other children to experience the same joy he felt especially those kids who are less fortunate. So, the Granite Bay High School sophomore created a charity called Brick Dreams in which he collects new and gently used Legos and donates them to non-

profit organizations that work with children. Ive always loved Legos and I read something that 60 Lego bricks exist for every one person, Bailey said. I thought, Thats really cool. But then I realized that I have a ton of them, which means some dont have any at all. He started a student club at his high school, the Bricks Dreams Club, which now has six members. He set up a website with the tagline bricks plus children equal happiness and got his first donation in September from a family friend. He has since received more, including two large plastic bins of Legos left at his doorstep. Bailey also gladly accepts donations of Ziploc bags. After cleaning the toys, Bailey mixes the pieces up and sorts them into bags. He has donated a total of 45 pounds of blocks to the safe house operated by WEAVE, which provides crisis intervention services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in Sacramento County. Bailey is an amazing teen who has taken something simple and made it incredibly meaningful, said Nichoel Menicucci, community relations coordinator with WEAVE. The organizations safe house serves more than 300 women and children

escaping violence each year. Anytime someone in the community steps up to give those children a gift it has a huge impact on their lives, Menicucci said. The Legos that Bailey provides for us through his charity allow the children to play, but they also learn the value of giving. Baileys mom Nina Snow said shes proud of her sons efforts to help others. Hes always been really empathetic even as a little kid, she said. Hes always the kid to go play with someone who isnt playing with anybody. Bailey plans to keep the charity going at least until he enters college, with plans to eventually become an orthopedic surgeon. In the meantime, hell keep adding to his Lego collection. Hes just starting and his heart is in the right place its such a simple thing but it doesnt have to be complicated, Nina Snow said. If your hearts in the right place, you can find a way to contribute.

am no stranger to island cuisine. One of my first jobs after leaving the military (several years ago) was working in a restaurant on the Big Island of Hawaii. So you can imagine my excitement when I was given the chance to review downtown Rosevilles newest restaurant, Sammys Rockin Island Bar & Grill. Sammys, as it is dubbed for short, is touted as a familyfriendly, island-themed restaurant featuring pan-Asian influenced cuisine with burgers, seafood, pasta, salads and a raw bar. On my recent visit, I was pleasantly surprised to see many of my old island favorites on the menu, including the legendary Hawaiian dish loco moco. The loco moco is hands down our signature dish, said chef de cuisine Jarrod Faljean. Although there are other items that sell better, it really has become our staple item relating to the islands. Loco moco is not for everybody, you either love it or you hate it, as Faljean explained. While I partially agree with that statement, I am also willing to bet that those who try it will likely come back for it again and again. What exactly is loco moco? Take a generously-sized ground beef hamburger patty, grill it and serve it over a bed of white rice. Top it off with a fried egg cooked over-easy and finish the dish with a generous portion of brown gravy. The dish is very popular among locals in Hawaii, usually best served on a Sunday morning after a long weekend of
luaus and mai tais. Here in south Placer County, the dish is all but impossible to find. Sammys serves loco moco two ways, taking the dish a step further by substituting yet another Hawaiian staple, Spam, for the ground beef patty and Maui fried rice. While the loco moco was indeed the highlight of my recent visit to Sammys, there is much more to the story. After reading several lessthan-flattering reviews on Yelp prior to my visit, I was feeling somewhat skeptical about what to expect from the new restaurant, which opened its doors on Sept. 22. But in my opinion, sub-par reviews are somewhat to be expected for a brand new restaurant struggling to work out the kinks and make a go of it, especially in what has been traditionally a very tough area for restaurants to be successful. The 10,000-square-foot space, which once housed a JC Penney department store, recently underwent a $3 million interior renovation. The restaurant is bright, airy, laid-back and colorful, adorned with decorative surfboards, guitars, gold records and (of course) large iconic posters of Red Rocker Sammy Hagar, leaving little imagination as to the restaurants theme. The restaurant has two levels with two full bars, one upstairs and one downstairs. There is a large stage set up to the right center of the downstairs dining room, almost as if it is meant to be the main focal point. Live music is offered Thursday through Saturday nights after 10 p.m., when the age requirement shifts to those 21 and over. A little more intimate dining

industry standard. But nonetheless, one bar patron, Camellia Hanson of Lincoln, was quite vocal about her distaste for the prices of the cocktails. I would love to see them make it because the bar is nice, Hanson said to me after asking if I was a reporter. Its really a super place, but seniors wont come here because we live on a fixed income. After our cocktail and stimulating conversations at the bar, we asked bartender Nicole to notify the hostess we were ready to be seated. The hostess offered us a table of our choosing and we opted to sit next to the crudo raw bar, close to the stage and in plain view of one of several flat-screen televisions showing live sports. Our server, Marie, approached the table after a short wait and offered us water and drinks, but did not explain any specials. After that, a busser promptly dropped off two waters and a bowl of potato chips. While we were tempted to order off of the pupus menu (pupu is Hawaiian for appetizer), we opted to order from the crudo raw bar menu. Crudo, explained assistant manager Mike Frost, is the Italian take on sushi and the crudo

experience is offered upstairs, where there are several quieter tables set looking out over Rosevilles historic rail yards. Upon our arrival for my recent visit, my date and I were greeted by a friendly hostess and asked to be seated at the bar for a cocktail before dinner. My date ordered the Sammys Rockin Daiquiri, a concoction
of Sammy Hagars Beach Bar Rum, fresh sour, lychee and pineapple juices served up in a martini glass. I opted for the Red Rocker martini Cabo Wabo reposado tequila, amaretto and cranberry juice. House cocktails range between $7 and $10, which in my opinion is somewhat of an

raw bar offered seasoned raw fish as well as ceviche. The lobster, shrimp and watermelon ceviche looked especially tempting, but we opted for the chefs choice crudo. Marie brought us the yellowtail, salmon, ahi yellowfin and char rare ahi crudo. While the flavors of the sauces and seasoning were quite nice, the fish did not taste as fresh as we would have liked. Later, we found out the restaurant gets fresh fish deliveries on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. We were there on a Monday. For our main course, we relied on our server, who suggested we try the barbecued pork Sammy smoked pork with pickled jalapeno, caramelized onions, queso blanco and black bean crema, served Panini style. We explained to our server that my date does not eat meat, but she does eat seafood and Marie suggested she try the beach salad mixed greens, jicima, chopped egg, pico de gallo, roasted corn salsa avocado, lime and chimichurri dressing. Not taking Maries suggestions, we decided on a second course of lobster bisque soup to share and a third course of fish and chips for the lady and the kalua pork entre for me. Marie returned a short time later with our soup and my dates fish and chips. The kalua pork entre was brought out shortly after that.
Sammys Rockin Island Bar & Grill on Vernon Street has a warm island-like atmosphere for dining.
We found the lobster bisque to be slightly creamier and sweeter than we are used to, but it was tasty nonetheless. The fish and chips were, well fish and chips. Its hard to get that one wrong. My kalua pork entre was cooked perfectly, moist and easily pulled apart with a fork. The accompanying barbecue sauce was deliciously sweet. Both dishes were served with a wonderful coleslaw. Then came the most pleasant surprise of the night the aforementioned loco moco, which we did not order but I was happy to delve into. Of course, with so much food, we asked Marie to box up the leftovers and sat down with Frost and Faljean for a conversation over a bread pudding dessert (which was also delicious). Faljean explained that the concept of the menu is based on a hybrid between Sammy Hagars other concept restaurants, Cabo Wabo Cantina and Sammys Beach Bar and Grill. He said the design of the restaurant, the ambience and the live music are all meant to attract people who are simply out to have a good time, and the menu is intended to reflect that. Were really not trying to focus on a high-end crowd, or even the lower end, Faljean said. Were really just trying to have fun with food and put out a great product. In my opinion, with a slew of delicious island offerings, the restaurant is doing just that. Downtown Roseville is changing for the better. With a growing number of entertainment options in the district, Sammys Rockin Island Grill is a nice addition. While some kinks clearly still need to be worked out in the brand new restaurant, I look forward to returning. Maybe next time well go for a live music show and, of course, more loco moco.

a new self-sustained life without violence or coercion. The Granite Bay resident shares why the problem is more local than you think.
1. How did you get involved with the organization?
I truly think it was a God thing. I received a phone call in May from a person I didnt know, from an organization that I had never heard of. A mutual friend thought I would be a good fit for the ministry. The God thing was that I had literally just prayed about going back to work in a position that would be more than just a paycheck. Lack of awareness is a huge problem. Indifference and apathy is what helps perpetrators and pimps keep strongholds
Absolutely not. AIM has primarily focused on Cambodia because we have found that Cambodia is where the youngest and most vulnerable victims are. But California ranks in the top three states, and the Sacramento area ranks among the top 10 regions in the nation for reported trafficking victims.

Early snow could erase memories of down year for Lake Tahoe ski resorts
BY JEFFREY WEIDEL
oticeably absent in the Lake Tahoe region last year was its biggest ski resort advertiser snow. Exposed rocks and trees were extremely visible even in late February when the dry and unseasonably warm temperatures in the Lake Tahoe region looked better suited for mountain biking than skiing or snowboarding. Regardless of how much snowmaking the resorts did, the perception remained Tahoe had no snow. According to Lake Tahoe weather historian Mark McLaughlin, it was the first time since the 1800s that the region had no reported snow in December. Snowmaking literally saved the season. Heavenly ran its considerable snow-making system
incessantly. Sugar Bowl made snow for 50 days at a staggering cost of roughly $625,000. Not even a Miracle March could save the season. Sugar Bowl went from 802 inches of snow in 2010-11 to an estimated 324 inches last season. Heavenly recorded 247 inches last season, well off its mark of 529 the year before. But this season arrives with renewed optimism and an early gift close to 3 feet of October snow in some locations and a half dozen resorts opened by Thanksgiving. Regardless of the weather, changes typically take place from year to year. Below is a look at some noteworthy things happening this year at Lake Tahoe ski resorts.

Exclusive Conference Hosts Elite Gathering of Nations Pre-eminent Financial Advisors and Industry Decision Makers ORLANDO (September 12, 2012) Charles Cohn, Senior Vice President Investments with Wells Fargo Advisors in Roseville, CA attended the eighth-annual Barrons Winners Circle Top Advisors Summit, hosted by Barrons magazine to promote best practices in the industry and the value of advice to the investing public. The invitation-only conference was held at Waldorf Astoria, September 12-14 in Orlando, FL. 58 of the Top 100 Financial Advisors in the U.S., as ranked and published in Barrons April 16, 2012 issue, were in attendance. This annual ranking is the basis for the Top Advisors Summit and the advisors are chosen based on the volume of assets overseen by the advisors and their teams, revenue generated for the firms and the quality of the advisors practices. The top 100 are comprised of advisors from major security firms and independent operations. This exclusive conference is designed to promote best practices and generate new ideas across the industry. Attendees conducted workshops led by the Top 100 Financial Advisors that explored current issues from business development ideas, managing high-net-worth accounts and families to portfolio management and retirement planning. Because the Summit brings together key leaders and top decision makers from around the country, it is recognized by the financial advisor community as the industrys leading event, said Ed Finn, editor and president of Barrons. The ideas and discussions generated here equip attendees to provide the best investment and financial advice to their clients, which is vital given the challenging economic and market conditions of today. Cohn was one of approximately 400 financial advisors who was selected by their firm to attend and participate in the conference. Participating firms included: Ameriprise Financial Services Inc., Bank of America-Merrill Lynch, Credit Suisse Securities (USA) LLC, Deutsche Bank Alex. Brown, LPL Financial, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, RBC Wealth Management, Robert W. Baird & Co., UBS Financial Services Inc. and Wells Fargo Advisors.

repare for a vacation of a lifetime a vacation that will last all year long in this Santa Barbara-style stunner. Secret gardens, tucked-away patios, sunny breakfasts outdoors, this Folsom Lake Estates home has been extensively updated until nothing remains but a spa-like, resort feel. It sounds dramatic, but the front exterior is ultra-private and subdued but for the sound of the cascading fountain that lies hidden just beyond the walls of the front courtyard. But enter this secluded retreat and there is subtle warmth and richness everywhere. The entry opens to a wide expanse of estate-sized yard that begins with extensive patios with retractable Roman shade-type coverings and a formal pool. Behind the pool rests a pergola surrounded by shade garden and lush redwoods nary a peek of another house can be seen in this yard densely surrounded by foliage. Of course, with almost an acre, the property includes plenty of lawn and a hidden cutting and vegetable garden, complete with already-planted bulbs that will be most glorious come spring. The garden area even includes a covered potting shed. The pool has been replastered and the pool equipment is all new, said Dana Svanum of Bishop Real Estate Group. Though the outdoors are glorious, the interior of the home is absolutely resort-like, as well. Start with the upstairs, which houses nothing but a truly spectacular master suite. Beginning with an anteroom that offers glass-door access to an extensive patio with views over a wide swath of Granite Bay that includes rooftops and

isiting the dentist may not be high on your list of likes, but having a toothache or a missing tooth and being unable to afford a dental visit is another story. Without insurance or adequate income, people with these problems tend to suffer through the pain or they avoid smiling if the missing tooth is in the front row of their mouth. What can they do? Well, thanks to people like Scott Szotko, DDS, many children and adults are getting their teeth fixed and their smiles back. The dentist and his wife, Kimber Szotko, a regis-
tered dental hygienist, donate hours to helping those who dont have dental plans or the funds to pay the bills. The couple who own Signature Smiles on Sunrise Avenue in Roseville were among those professionals who donated their time and services at the California Dental Association Cares free dental clinic at Cal Expo in October. According to the California Dental Association website, 2,026 patients at the Sacramento clinic were served by 1,651 volunteers who provided more than 10,000 procedures valued at $1.6 million in dental care. It was an amazing two days, said Kimber Szotko. The doctor worked from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days providing all sorts of services from extractions to infection control. The doctor also worked on

correcting front teeth, just to give people their smile back, she said. People with problem areas in the front of their mouth are at a disadvantage at job interviews, Kimber Szotko said. The dental association provides funds for the program and dentists and dental professionals come from all over the state to help. Plans are to hold the event twice a year at different locations in California. Scott Szotko is chair for the council on membership for the American Dental Association and is one of 67 delegates that formulate policies and direction of dentistry. He was affiliated with the ADA when in dental school. Hes been a dentist for 13 years. In addition to the California Dental Association Cares events, he volunteers with several other programs including Give Kids A Smile. Each year, in conjunction with Childrens Dental Health Month in February, the Szotkos open their practice on a Satur-
day and provide treatment and education for children who dont have access to dental care. A lot of dental offices do it, said Kimber Szotko. The school systems refer the kids. Through a Bayside Church, Roseville outreach program, the couple also participated in a dental clinic in downtown Sacramento. It was quite successful, although we could have treated more people. We plan to do it again, she said. They also participated in another program, Give Back A Smile sponsored by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. They treated a survivor of domestic violence who had her jaw broken. We gave the woman back her smile with new upper dentures and a new crown on her lower teeth, Kimber Szotko said. The work was done in conjunction with local laboratories, the Corr Dental Laboratory and the Roseville Dental Laboratory,

They met at the University of Michigan, married and moved to Southern California. They moved to Granite Bay to be closer to her family. Granite Bay is a neat community. Its fun to know all your neighbors, there are kids everywhere and our daughter, age 3, loves it, Szotko said. They bought Signature Smiles, an existing practice in Roseville, where they see families and special needs patients. The doctor has spent over 10 years mastering the latest techniques in cosmetic dentistry with a focus on detail and the use of life-like porcelain and composite materials to enhance smiles. Its a slow time for dentistry due to the economy, but the Szotkos are busy with their volunteer work. They enjoy giving back to the community by taking care of peoples dental needs. he Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary will soon be ablaze with holiday lights, providing a unique backdrop for families to experience this holiday season. In preparation for the third annual Wild Nights and Holiday Lights at Folsom Zoo Sanctuary, volunteers have hung thousands of colorful, environmentally friendly LED lights all over the Zoo Sanctuary, including an enchanted forest of 60 lighted trees. Visitors may also enjoy holiday carolers, animal presentations by Zoo docents, seasonal refreshments, rides on the miniature Starlight Express train and meet Santa Claus and the Zoos own Santa
Paws, says Sandy Hilton, Folsoms Community and Cultural Services Manager. Our staff and community volunteers have created a wonderful opportunity for our community to celebrate the magic of the holiday season while supporting our wonderful Zoo animals. The sanctuary opened in 1963 with a mission of providing shelter to ani-
mals that were injured or orphaned in the wild, or raised and rejected as wild pets. More than 80 animals, including tigers, bears, sheep, deer, monkeys, foxes and wolves, reside at the Zoo Sanctuary. According to Hilton, approximately 8,000 viewed lights last year at the sanctuary. The zoo is so charming, and once we light up the walkways and exhibits it makes it so intimate, it introduces new people to the zoo for people who may not have visited the zoo before, Hilton said. Its a wonderful holiday event that fun for the family. She said another reason to take advantage of these special evening hours at the zoo is to see the animals at night.
Wolves and foxes are always very curious of people walking around in the evening, she said. We can also hear the owls hoot sometimes during the night, so its a different experience than visiting during the day. Its a nice date night for teens and couples as well as a family outing. It really offers a neat experience for all age groups. Visitors can view the holiday lights from 5 to 8 p.m., Dec. 7-9 and Dec. 14-23. Admission is $5 per person, with no fee for children under two years. The Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary is located in City Lions Park on Stafford Street, behind the Folsom Public Library. For more information, call (916) 355-7285 or visit folsomzoofriends.org.

Many Americans no longer have insurance, and those who do, have found that their benefits are reduced. Thats where my office comes in. I have a significantly lower fee so that more people are able to afford the care they need. A whole week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save...studies show that chiropractic adjustment can double your immune capacity, naturally, without drugs, or flu shots. The immune system fights colds, flues, and other sickness. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies have also showed people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. Now to my confession, I dont heal anyone! I never have. I dont treat

f youre known as a bar fly, youve probably got some great stories at a local watering hole, and you might be known to bust a gut laughing. But if youre a local Barre Flie, youre well on your way to shaping your gut, legs, and arms into a ballerina-type body, and you barely have time to catch your breath, much less laugh. Barre-Flies is a privatelyowned fitness studio located in Granite Bays Quarry Ponds shopping center. This is a dream come true, said Diane Holland, owner and instructor at the newly renovated studio.
Since 2011, ballet barre studios have been appearing in every major city and seem to be the latest trend in that neverending quest for the perfect workout. There are no weights, and the only thing you need to bring is a pair of socks. Although there is music, there is no dancing. And even though youre stretching, this isnt yoga. So what exactly is a barre workout? Barre exercises rely mainly upon ones bodyweight for resistance, and the moves challenge your core stability and balance. Barre workouts are designed to give you a long, lean dancer-like physique. While each barre workout differs

Having just completed her final round of chemotherapy for non-Hodgkins lymphoma, she finds this type of workout to be a calming environment while providing strength training that is vital to her bodys recovery. Reema is a warrior, Holland said. This is truly an empowering environment. Barre-Flies is open seven days a week and costs about the same as the going rate for any type of fitness workout program. The schedule changes each day, as Holland serves up a menu of different classes.

I dont like to cook in real life, she said. This is how I cook. I serve up a new menu every day and I feed my customers. Holland also feeds her soul in the process. Now she is living her dream and says that even though it may not be filling her bank account just yet, it is filling her soul. Ive wanted this for so long, Holland said. Holland comes from a family of business owners. Deep down, she always knew that she would follow suit. Ive followed my gut my entire life, and if I fail oh well, she said. Im my fathers daughter, Holland said. After her father passed away a few years ago, Holland still finds herself missing his approval. If he was alive today, I know he would be proud of me, in fact, he would be my biggest supporter, she said. Although some days are long and she misses her teenage children and husband while the business ramps up, she knows in her heart that this is exactly where she wants to be in her life. To me, failure is not chasing this dream, Holland added.

ant to get more out of your workouts? Theres a little secret in the fitness world called interval training. What is interval training? Rather than doing the same cardio exercise your entire workout, interval training alternates short, high-intensity bursts of exercise with slower, low-intensity periods of recovery. Research has shown that such intervals of high and low-intensity activity burn more calories and build fitness quicker in a shorter amount of time. Once designed for elite athletes, interval training is now something the
average fit person can try. You dont need fancy equipment or special training to rev up your routine with interval training. Read on to learn more about this fast, slow, fast, slow method of training and weight loss.
both your aerobic (with oxygen) and anaerobic (without oxygen) systems. High-intensity exercise causes your muscles to produce lactic acid (waste products), which lead to muscle soreness. Too much lactic acid build up causes exercise to become exhausting and painful. Alternating hard and easy exercise will reduce the amount of lactic acid that accumulates, thereby making exercise more comfortable, improving your endurance and increasing your speed.
matter. There are no real hardand-fast rules about interval length. Varying lengths bring varying benefits. So how fast and how often you pick up the pace depends on you. Beginners should aim for no longer than 30 seconds of high-intensity bursts. If youre feeling strong and are in good shape, go ahead and push yourself a bit longer.

Rushing into highintensity exercise may lead to injury. Start out slowly. Add one or two high-intensity intervals each workout. Slow down if you feel youre overdoing it. As your stamina increases, feel free to challenge yourself.
Sample workouts
Remember, theres no set rule about how to do interval training. It can be tailored to your fitness level and type of exercise. An interval-training workout involves four variables that can be changed to meet your goals: intensity of intervals, duration of intervals, duration of recovery intervals and the number of interval repetitions. Interval training can be casual, spur of the moment bursts of activity depending on how youre
feeling that day or if youre working toward a more specific sports or fitness goal you can take a more sophisticated, scientific approach. Interval training workouts have been designed for plyometrics, sprints, stair running, jump rope, speed drills and agility drills. A simple example of interval training for walking would be to add short bursts of jogging or alternate slower walking with brisk walking. If you walk outdoors, you could jog or walk faster between certain landmarks such as mailboxes or street signs, then slow down for a short distance. A second example that really gets your heart pumping and improves fitness in a short amount of time includes running, rowing or cycling. Warm

up for about 15 minutes, then run, row, or cycle as hard as you can (at 90 percent of your maximum heart rate) for three minutes. Then go easy for three minutes, allowing your body to recover. Repeat these threeminute intervals of highand low-intensity exer-
cise three or four times. Then cool down for 10 minutes. To get the most out of your interval training try the following:
Add resistance:
Between sets of cardio do a set with dumbbells, resistance bands or with your body weight.
Increase speed: Really push yourself during the sprinting intervals. Remember, its only a handful of seconds. Lengthen intervals: Add a few seconds to your intense intervals. Change exercises: If youve been sprinting then switch to burpees or
high knees. Plus, this is the busiest time of the year. I get more cancellations in December than any other month. It is hard for us to fit our workouts into our busy holiday schedule. I have found that the shorter our workouts, the more likely we are to stick to them. If you can do short, noequipment workouts at home, youll lose fat and still have time to make all those family gatherings and parties with friends as well. Motivative Health & Fitness would like to take this time to wish all of our readers a very merry Christmas and a healthy happy new year!

They seek to understand the stories of others and ensure that school is a place where they can learn and grow in a safe environment of understanding. Paiges care for others carries on into her future

s if San Diego needed to give visitors any more reasons to visit what many people already consider paradise, the Port of San Diego has begun sprucing up portions of the waterfront that will make this part of the city look like one big bayside theme park. Dont look for thrill rides unless maybe you want to rent a speed boat or jet skis but rather think of the new improvements as adding to what already is an extensive waterfront playground. Seaport Village already gives visitors a fun collection of shops and restaurants with panoramic views of the bay. Now a new 105-foot wide esplanade will adorn the waterfront and will feature plazas, gardens, shade pavilions and a promenade perfect for strolling, jogging or cycling along the waterfront. Its called the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan and its set for completion in the fall of 2013. Additionally the Old San Diego Police Station, located in the same general waterfront area, will be transformed into a new multi-purpose shopping center. Vacant for the past 25 years, the Old Police Station will have restaurants, specialty retail stores, public markets and entertainment facilities all while maintaining its unique Spanish architecture. Of course there is no need to wait until these projects are completed to

visit the San Diego waterfront. On a recent visit we were reminded of just how fun it is to spend time down on the water, enjoying what is really an ideal place to play tourist for a day or a weekend. Even though we live close to San Diego, a trip to the San Diego waterfront is like getting on a plane and visiting someplace that takes your mind completely off work or anything else that may be consuming your thoughts. It helps if you plan to spend a night or two at one of the waterfront hotels in San Diego, and there are many good ones that provide easy access to the waterfront.
On this particular trip we stayed at the Embassy Suites San Diego Bay, located across the street from the Old San Diego Police Station and just between two popular attractions, Seaport Village and the USS Midway. You know that feeling when you arrive at your beachfront hotel in
Hawaii, Florida or the Caribbean? Theres that rush of excitement that comes when you see the water and all the vacationers exploring the nearby attractions, the suns warm glow making it ever-so-urgent that you jump out of your traveling attire and into a bathing suit or swim-
ming pool. Arriving at the Embassy Suites San Diego we felt that same excitement. We always do when visiting the San Diego waterfront its that kind of place. Our 11th floor suite gave us an incredible view of the San Diego waterfront, Seaport Village and the nearby USS Midway. The kids didnt spend much time looking at the views, though they couldnt wait to swim in the hotels impressive indoor pool. Near the pool are stateof-the-art exercise facilities for Mom and Dad. Close to the waterfront hotels is Seaport Village, which we think captures
the spirit of San Diego perfectly. This waterfront shopping area is 14 acres altogether with numerous restaurants and more than 50 one-of-a-kind shops. For those husbands who might not be inclined to spend much time in a shopping complex, rest assured that Seaport Village is much more than that. The main walkway through Seaport Village follows the water and offers plenty of sights to keep things interesting. On any given day you might see luxurious pleasure yachts trolling the bayfront, or you can often see a mammoth Navy vessel entering or
60
leaving the bay. Kayakers and small pleasure craft ply these waters while you can see every type of boat from the tiny Coronado taxi to Americas Cup racing boats. On occasion weve seen historic tall-masted sailing ships staging a recreation of a battle at sea. Seaport Village is an excellent vantage point for anything you want to observe on the bay, but it also has its own entertainment such as live bands on Sundays and an assortment of street
musicians, magicians and artists all vying for attention on what is usually a gorgeous sunny San Diego day. Altogether there are four miles of meandering cobblestone pathways at Seaport Village and hours of exploration ahead of you, depending on just how much you want to see. Its a short walk north along the waterfront to the USS Midway, a mustsee for anyone visiting San Diego for the first time. This is Nirvana for military and aviation
buffs, but its also a fascinating experience for anyone who wonders what its like on a real aircraft carrier. The ship allows access to nearly all areas and on the flight deck are dozens of vintage aircraft of various shapes and sizes. Docents are on board to explain how everything worked on the Midway and usually they have quite a story to tell because they were actually sailors or aviators on the ship when it was on active duty.
