Happy New Year from the Polk Arts Alliance (PAA)! As 2013 gets underway, we remain extremely excited about opportunities for the arts in Polk both from the perspective of our creative arts community and those who are simply finding ways to enjoy the wide variety of arts/culture offerings the community is providing.

On the PAA side of things, we continue to support the arts in many ways. We recently held workshops to assist Polks cultural Arts organizations with grant applications helping ensure success in the funding arena. We also continue to actively participate on Polks Tourist Development Council Arts Committee. As part of that effort, weve helped shape grant funding criteria and also have a say in what programs actually receive grant dollars. Additionally, PAA will continue to work with cultural arts organizations countywide to ensure that they fully understand how to measure their programs in order to achieve future funding goals. What this means to you is that all these efforts converge to sustain and enhance the arts and cultural opportunities available to Polk residents and visitors and, really, who doesnt love to have lots of choices when it comes to entertainment? Now, as I see it, the next question is logically, how do I find out about all these great offerings? The best way to ensure you dont want miss out on any of the fun is through membership in PAA. Why? Because it comes with a subscription to this publication, Arti-Facts, which is truly the go to source for all things arts & culture related. If youre not already a member, I urge you to join. The Polk Arts Alliance, Board of Directors and the Cultural Arts Council leave 2012 having accomplished milestones that will benefit our cultural arts community for years to come. We look forward to celebrating these achievements with our board, members, partners and supporters at our 6th Annual CARP (Cultural Arts Recognition Program) Awards in February. This is the Cultural Arts Councils annual recognition and celebration of the many volunteers, board members and businesses that support our organizations. We have many individuals and businesses to thank for their continued support and look forward to our celebration this year with exuberance. The Board of Directors would like to thank Allen & Company for their support of the CARP Awards again this year. I would like to give a special thanks to our County Commissioners for their endless patience and fair and balanced approach to our issues to support the arts over the past three years. As their terms end, we would like to give special recognition to Commissioners Bob English and Sam Johnson. They handled their difficult jobs with grace and fairness. Their understanding of the importance of the arts in economic development and quality of life is visionary. We all truly appreciated their consideration, support and guidance. They helped shape Polk County, keep everyone on track and we will miss them in that role. Whether we all agreed or not, it was clear that all the commissioners are dedicated to a fair and balanced approach that is critical to what is best for the county, its businesses and our citizens. I look forward to continuing to work with Commissioners Bell, Dantzler and Smith and to get to know our newly elected commissioners as they begin their terms. The Polk Arts Alliances objectives include promoting Polk County as the Heart of the Arts destination; advocating on behalf of all Polk County arts and cultural organizations on the Legislatures annual Arts Day and with the Division of Cultural Affairs; making an impact as a member of the Americans for the Arts Private Industry Council in Washington, D.C.; and building global awareness of how the arts and creative industries enhance future economic growth and prosperity. Internationally acclaimed artist Maggie Taylor combines history and imagination.The worlds she lays out in her digital creations include familiar imagery taken from found objects and 19thcentury daguerreotypes, which she scans and manipulates in her Gainesville studio. Although she retains aspects of their original content, she converts their historical and mysterious significances into something of sophisticated fantasy.This exhibition will be a survey of Taylors work and will coincide with the release of her new book,No Ordinary Days.

Coincidence: Works by Louviere+Vanessa

Jeff Louviere and Vanessa Brown (known collectively as Louviere+Vanessa) are creative partners working to expand the experimental properties of photography.From their home and studio in New Orleans, they constantly strive to push the bounds of image making and reinterpret traditional ideas of photography; using such alternative materials as gold leaf, Super 8mm film, and even blood, Louviere+Vanessa succeed in breaking with convention. Their surreal subjects emerge from a sense of literary romanticism and tragedy and often include satirical undertones. This exhibition will be a survey of their work and will include pieces from nine different series of works.

The Art Festivals of March

by Glenda Losh {tay-cho} an art gallery s different and unique as the cities of Bartow, Lake Wales and Winter Haven are from each other, in March they will all have something in common. The streets come alive with art. Beginning the weekend of March 2 and 3 in Bartow and ending March 23 and 24 in Lake Wales, the month is full of street art festivals where one can find paintings, sculptures, jewelry, antique car shows, and live flowers and plants. The Bloomin Arts Festival takes place around the Polk County Historical Courthouse grounds, in Bartow, on March 2 and 3, 2013. The annual art show features artists of fine arts and crafts, the students art show, a quilt show, flower show, and car show. The Festival opens at 10 am each day and runs until 5 pm. There are many prizes awarded as well as purchase awards. The Bartow Art Guild offers a painting as a raffle prize to raise money for an art scholarship for a deserving Bartow High School student. Members of the Guild will also have paintings on display for purchase. Information on Bloomin Arts can be found on the Bartow Art Guild website, www.bartowartguild.com. The TD Bank Central Park Art Festival in Winter Haven is held March 16 and 17 from 10 am to 4 pm each day. The deadline for entries is January 30. Jurying for the festival will take place
Thursday, February 7. With just under 100 participating artists, the festival generally can draw a crowd of around 20,000 each year. Concurrently, Polk County students will showcase their work in The Young Artists Show, on exhibit in the Ridge Art Chain O Lakes Gallery from February 21 to March 17. Additional information can be found on the Ridge Art Association website at www.ridgeart.org or by calling Christy Hemenway at 863-291-5661. The 2013 Citizens Bank and Trust 42nd Annual Lake Wales Art Show will increase the number and amount of monetary awards presented to artists during the event on Saturday, March 23 from 9 am to 4 pm and Sunday, March 24, 2013 from 10 am to 4 pm. The new awards structure includes three prizes in each of the eight categories as well as three top awards. The show awards and purchase prize program total $30,900. Located on the scenic shores of Lake Wales, the event attracts thousands of visitors each year to the exhibition booths, food, music and activities. More than 100 juried artists from throughout Florida and even out-of State will exhibit their works in eight categories: clay; drawing, graphics and digital; jewelry; mixed media and fiber; oil and acrylic; watercolor and pastel; photography; and sculpture, wood and glass. As in years past, two students from each participating school across Polk County are selected to receive Awards of Distinction, encompassingover 150 creative designs of nearly 100 public, private, and charter schools. Awards of Distinction recipients will be honored at an awards ceremony in early 2013 to recognize their accomplishment. These designs become part of the Kids Tag Art traveling exhibit, which showcases their art throughout the remainder of the school year. Again this year, Southern Homes of Polk County is the major underwriter for the project and a major contributor to arts education in Polk County. Leah Goddard has a BS in Education from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. Leah contributes to several wood carving magazines, and has authored her own book Carving Natures Rascals: Wood Carving an Armadillo, Skunk, Mouse and Raccoon. Lectures will be held from 7:00 - 8:30 PM on consecutive Tuesdays beginning January 15 and ending on February 12, and will feature the singing of hymns significant to the four denominations represented; Episcopal, Presbyterian, Catholic, and Methodist. A fellowship time will follow the singing from 8:30 - 9:00 PM. A final concert will feature community singing of hymns and a presentation of choral masterworks, including And All Who Listen, composed by Carrie Kraft on text by Agnes Bishop Jardine. Madama Butterfly

he Imperial Symphony Orchestra will present its 12th opera Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini on January 19, 2013 at 7:00 pm. The opera will be performed in Branscomb Auditorium on the campus of Florida Southern College. Artistic Director of the Indianapolis Opera, James Caraher, returns to conduct his 11th opera with the symphony.

adama Butterfly is one of the most emotional and unforgettable operas ever composed. Set in 1904 Nagasaki, Japan, a young geisha Cio-Cio San marries US Naval Officer Pinkerton. Shortly after their marriage Pinkerton departs for America with the promise to return. After having given up family and faith to wed Pinkerton, she still waits for him after a three year separation. When Pinkerton finally returns he realizes he has made a huge mistake but it is too late. Madama Butterfly is a story rich in tradition, romance and tragedy. It is Puccini at his best! For the ISOs performance, the role of Cio-Cio San (Madama Butterfly) will be sung by soprano Adrienne Danrich. Ms. Danrich is a native of St. Louis, MO and is an alumna of Eastman School of Music and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She made her debut with the Kentucky Opera and has since performed with the San Francisco Opera, New York City Opera, Cincinnati Opera and Opera Pacific. Ms. Danrich voice has been described as fresh liquid-silver and meltingly tender in its high, floating vulnerability by Opera News. The role of Pinkerton will be sung by internationally acclaimed American tenor Stephen Mark Brown. He developed his vocal technique and zest for acting under the famous operatic duo Nicola Rossi-Lemeni and Virginia Zeani. Brown has sung in many of the most important operatic venues across the US, Canada and South America, as well as the major theaters throughout Europe. In 1992 opera legend Luciano Pavarotti stated, Bravo! This tenor reminds me very much of myself.

Lakelands own mezzo-soprano Christina Sale will play the role of Suzuki. Sale, a Professor of Voice at Florida Southern College, made her international debut in Robert Altmans production of Stravinskys The Rakes Progress which toured France and Belgium. She has performed in opera houses around the country and gave a commanding performance as Carmen in the 2006 ISO production of Carmen. The role of Sharpless will be played by baritone Thomas Potter. Potter made his opera debut with the San Francisco Opera and has since performed with the Indianapolis Opera, Atlanta Opera, and Opera Sao Paulo in Brazil. From 1994-2000, Mr. Potter was engaged by the Stadttheater St. Gallen in Switzerland, singing roles from Tosca, Aida, La Traviata, among many others. olk State Theater delves into Central Floridas rich Cuban culture for its spring performance, staging the Pulitzer prize-winning, Anna in the Tropics, a selection that will offer actors and audiences alike a unique theatrical experience.

This is a very intimate performance, the subject matter has moments of intensity and the language is poetic. The audience and actors will be in close proximity to one another. Depending on what your theatre-going experience has been, it may be unlike anything else youve ever seen, said Director Ilene Fins. The play, written by Nilo Cruz, and winner of the 2003 Pulitzer for drama, is set in 1929, in an Ybor City cigar factory a fictional version of the many cigar factories that once lined the communitys streets. It is against this backdrop that the plays lector, Juan Julian, is introduced. Lectors were often brought into cigar factories and paid from workers wages to read, breaking up the monotony of the hand-rolling process. Juan chooses for his reading material Leo Tolstoys adultery-ridden Anna Karenina. The novel provides perfect juxtaposition for the struggles the workers face throughout the play from assimilating to American culture, to the move toward mechanizing cigar-making and the rise of the cigarette, to their own relationship problems. Anna in the Tropics follows a landmark performance for Polk State Theater in Richard III, its first Shakespearean tragedy and the largest, most elaborate production in department history. While Anna in the Tropics will be smaller-scale in numerous ways, not the least of which is an alley-inspired set design that will allow for only about 100 seats a fifth of the capacity at Polk States Winter Haven Fine Arts Theatre its a play packed with enormous complexity, Fins said. For example, Fins said, the play deals with infidelity, but not the typical soap-opera brand with clear villains and heroes. We want to see things as black and white, but the infidelity in Anna in the Tropics has many grey areas. Empathy and infidelity are two concepts rarely associated with one another, but the play forces you to consider the love triangle from all points of view, to understand why the characters do the things they do, rather than simply pass judgment, she said. In addition to the emotional insights actors and audiences will gain, Fins said students and audiences alike will likely walk away from the play with a transformed appreciation for Ybor City.
Fins and members of her production team and cast have visited Ybor in recent months, touring the Ybor City Museum, seeing for themselves cigar-rolling tables and the shotgun-style houses where workers lived. Theyve reveled in the areas architecture and enjoyed its cuisine all of which will help them pepper the performance with an aura of authenticity. I didnt have any idea how important Ybor City was to the economy of Tampa and what a huge impact it made on the whole area, Fins said. Polk State Theatre Producer Paul Carbonell selected the play for this years performance schedule. This year, we got an influx of students with Hispanic backgrounds in the Theatre Department. I knew we had people who would understand the culture behind the story, he said. For both Carbonell and Fins, Anna in the Tropics gets to their shared passion of increasing literacy through drama. Anna Karenina, published in the late 1800s, weaves a love affair with Russian politics and religion, making for a daunting read. But the play offers students and audiences an easier, roundabout approach to the landmark novel. Fins wouldnt be surprised if audiences go home and decide to read Anna Karenina for themselves. This is a great vehicle for increasing literacy. I hope it inspires people to read Anna Karenina and rediscover Tolstoy, she said.

of the Ridge Woodcarvers Club in Lakeland. His intricately carved flowers show his commitment to accuracy and realism. He does extensive research before he begins his basswood carvings. Whether the carvings represent the flora or fauna of our world or the whimsy of his snowmen, toy soldiers or Santas (large and small), they are proportionally correct. Harley started at ten years of age with model airplanes. He carved boats after classes at the Flint Institute of Arts. The Navy honed his carpentry skills, but it was a friend he worked with at General Motors who encouraged his self-taught carving. He found out quickly that fellow employees were anxious to purchase his fish, mushrooms, Peanuts characters and Indian mounted horses. Harley also volunteered as a carving teacher for handicapped veterans for the state of Illinois. Retirement has allowed Harley the time to pursue his talent. His rhododendron won his first Blue Ribbon in a 1992 show in Hemit, California. He and his wife, Nancy, traveled for several years before making Florida their home. He has won numerous Blue Ribbons at the Annual Lakeland Woodcarving Shows. He has won acclaim for his floral carvings of daisies, fruit tree blossoms, columbines, fuscias, and bearded irises, and for his instruction and guidance of fellow carvers. His work can be purchased at Hannis in Harbor Springs, Michigan. In 2004, Mr. Cooper retired from dancing full time, feeling it was time for him to start spending the majority of his time giving back in the form teaching, coaching and choreographing. Until 2007, Mr. Cooper was also involved in and part creator of a National Outreach Program for kids at risk, called Athletes For Kids (AFK), involving professional dancers and star professional athletes.When time permits, Mr. Cooper takes advantage of opportunities to dance as a freelance dancer on various dance projects and galas nationally and internationally. He is also part of the Lines Ballet School teaching staff and New York City Dance Alliance. Currently he is also co-creator and Director of Modas Dance. The weekend culminates with a performance on Saturday, March 2 at Branscomb Auditorium, Florida South College at 7:00 pm. Florida Dance Arts presents
his year marks the 19th anniversary of the Central Florida Dance Celebration. In 1994 the teachers at Highland School of Dance were discussing the local dance environment and the lack of opportunities for students to perform in a noncompetitive atmosphere. They decided what was needed was a weekend seminar involving a collaboration with other dance studios throughout central Florida. In addition to the performance, they felt it was important to bring in a national caliber master teacher to conduct classes for all the participants. They enlisted several area studios in this endeavor and found a home for this new show at Florida Southern Colleges Branscomb Auditorium. As in all things, the inaugural year had its challenges, yet the show went extremely well. By consent of Highland School of Dance, Florida Dance Arts, Inc. began producing the Central Florida Dance Celebration in 2010 with the same high standards set by Highland School of Dance. Each year since has been a constant refinement and improvement as the groups work to present an outstanding show encompassing all styles of dance. Their second goal of providing master classes for the participants was not realized until the second year, but these classes have been exceptional ever since. This year the dancers will have the privilege of taking ballet dance classes with Duncan Cooper who has an impressive career. Born in Denver, Colorado, Mr. Cooper is currently living in San Francisco. However, having spent a considerable amount of time growing up in NYC and the Bay Area, he considers himself a native of both coasts. Over his career he danced with two major companies, San Francisco Ballet and Dance Theatre of Harlem, the latter with whom he was a principal dancer for nine

y inspiration has always been my father. I grew up hearing stories about how he would play soccer in the dirt fields of Honduras with a soccer ball made out of panty hose. When he was thirteen a soccer scout spotted him and recruited him for the junior national Honduran team. Within a few years my father was playing as a midfielder in the national Honduran team. My father always said, If you do something, you do it well. He didnt teach me soccer as he taught my brothers. Instead he enrolled me in ballet classes at a local studio. Although my mom was busy with housework and raising the children, she always made sure I arrived at my ballet classes on time. As I entered middle school, my father sensed I needed to enhance my dance education. We travelled an hour and a half on a nightly basis to Alexandra School of Ballet. The director, Alexandra Zaharias, had studied at the School of American Ballet under the direction of George Balanchine. In addition I would spend my summer vacations at various dance intensives including Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Boston Ballet, Fort Wayne Ballet, and Fort Worth Ballet. I didnt know what to major in college. All I had thought about was dance. Fortunately, Butler University was known for its dance program so I think my parents felt relieved when I auditioned and was accepted into the dance program. There, I was able to study different forms of dance including modern, jazz, character, tap, all with a solid ballet foundation. I had ample opportunities to perform as a soloist in their annual production of the Nutcracker, Cinderella, and Tender Land to name a few. I eventually graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance. I was accepted as an apprentice with the Joseph Holmes Dance Theatre, but declined. I think the prospect of living in a big city without knowing anyone scared me a bit. I danced professionally at Aspen Ballets Snowmass Festival, Indianapolis Civic Theatres West Side Story, and was dance captain for Michigans Adventure theme park. Then, I stopped dancing. I decided to pursue a degree in occupational therapy and graduated from Washington University in 1995. I met and married my husband, Timothy Dickason, and started a family. After many years on active duty we decided to plant our roots in Lakeland, Florida. My husband accepted a position with Mircropath Laboratories. We have been blessed with three beautiful children AnaRosa, Joseph, and Marie. We decided to join the local gym for our fitness goals. I would walk by the Zumba classes and thought to myself, That looks like dancing but I am not a dancer anymore. After a year of walking by, I finally joined a class. I enjoyed myself so much I returned for more classes. Eventually I noticed some hints of my former self as a dancer and people were starting to ask me if I ever danced. I would always answer Yes but in a different lifetime, thats how it felt anyway. Like many parents, I wanted to enroll my eldest daughter in dance classes. As I researched different dance schools, I noticed Florida Dance Theatre not only has an academy but a professional company. I knew my children would not just be taught steps but also technical instruction, so crucial for dancing, but often overlooked.

As AnaRosa began her dance education I noticed there was basic adult ballet. I decided to enroll for strengthening and fitness. I remember Teri Gavin, one of the instructors, always encouraging me with her gentle corrections and praise. She asked me if the founder and artistic director of Florida Dance Theatre, Carol Krajacic-Erkes, had seen me dance. I said no. I brought my daughter to the 2011 Nutcracker auditions. I had packed my dance attire still undecided if I should audition. I asked someone if I should audition. Perhaps I could mostly perform pantomime. I just needed that last push. I asked my daughter to wait. The audition was quickly over and Carol called out my name. She asked me where I had trained. Then, she asked what I was doing Monday morning. I said cleaning the house. She asked me to join company class. It was difficult in the beginning. There were days when I could barely get out of bed, my muscles stiff and aching. But, I kept coming back and things became easier. Carol asked me to put on my pointe shoes and I remember thinking, I threw those away twenty years ago. But with Carols and Freddies (Ferdinand de Jesus associate director and resident choreographer of Florida Dance Theatre) encouragement I have been able to join other company members in the Nutcracker, Firebird, and Innovations. I am dancing my second year with Florida Dance Theatre. Every day is a blessing for me. And yes, at 74 years of age my dad still plays soccer.

UP WITH PEOPLE DEBUTS NEW SHOW IN LAKELAND

By Cary McMullen Florida Southern College opened their homes to me during my time in Up with People is one of the most meaningful and memorable experiences I have had. Florida Southern was chosen as the rehearsal site due to a new academic partnership with Up with People. Cast members who qualify can receive a full semesters worth of college credit at FSC. Florida Southern President Dr. Anne B. Kerr expressed her excitement in hosting Up with People. We have long admired the important work of Up with People to bring about international understanding and develop compassion across boundaries. The work they are doing ties closely with our mission to provide our students with a broad global understanding and a commitment to lead lives that will make a positive and consequential contribution to society, she said.
or more than 40 years, the educational organization Up with People has assembled an international troupe of young adults to deliver messages of hope and goodwill throughout the world through the performing arts. The shows performed by Up with People are renowned for their energy, charm and positive messages, and the experience provides cast members with an international and intercultural experience that teaches service leadership. For the first time in more than 20 years, Up with People will train its cast in a location outside its headquarters in Denver. From January 11 to February 10, 100 young people from more than 20 countries will attend Up with Peoples four-week staging and orientation program on the campus of Florida Southern College in Lakeland as they prepare for their five-month international tour. Up with Peoples newest production, Voices, will debut on the Florida Southern campus at Branscomb Auditorium on Saturday, February 9, at 7:30 p.m. The show is themed around the power and the irony of communication in todays global climate. Come Explore a Wonderland of Glass

On January 10, 2013, the Lake Wales Arts Council will take an artfilled trip through central Florida. Traveling to the Morse Museum in Winter Park and the Orlando Museum of Art, this ArtEscapes adventure will offer a glimpse into a range of artworks from contemporary glass sculptures to nature-inspired vases and bowls.In addition, guests can choose to dine at the historic 1922 Park Plaza Hotel for lunch or spend time shopping the Rodeo Drive of the East. The Morse Museum of American Art houses the worlds most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany. As one of the late 19th centurys most creative and prolific designers, Tiffany was the first to produced beautiful decorative art products for consumers at a range of economic levels. His glass creations were inspired by nature and featured jewelry, pottery, paintings, leadedglass windows and more. The museums exhibit highlights Tiffanys colorful creations and versatility.

Similarly, the Orlando Museum of Arts exhibit, entitled Contemporary Glass Sculpture: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Studio Glass, will house 65 glass works by internationally known artists. Included in the exhibit is Winter Havens own Thermon Statom who served as an artist in residency from the Arts Council in 2007/8. Each exhibit piece demonstrates the concepts and techniques of the individual artists and their unique use of the glass. He takes you from where you are and builds on what you know or dont know, says Nora Kay Francis, whos taken his classes for two years. I had no formal art classes before this. The first time I picked up a brush was two years ago in Owens class. His methods are wonderful. He doesnt try to change your style, he just allows you to build on what your strengths are. He tailors you with suggestions on what you need to take it to the next level. Many of the classes occur inside the Olmsted House, but Owen also takes his students out into the Gardens to find natural inspiration from the beauty of the 50-acre preserve. I love it when we go outside to paint. I enjoy the camaraderie with the other students, says Nora Kay.

Art Your Heart Out at Bok Tower Gardens

f youve ever thought about trying your hand at watercolor, now is the time. Even if you dont consider yourself artistic, Owen Jolly can take your skillor lack offrom where you are to where you want to be. Beginner to advanced artists can learn the art of watercolor under the quality instruction of Owen during this twelve-week class session at Bok Tower Gardens. Classes start Thursdays January 24 and run until April 11. Two levels of instruction are being offered. The beginner to intermediate class will meet Thursday afternoons from 1-4 p.m. These classes will cover step-by-step basic watercolor techniques as well as the elements of design. The intermediate to advanced class will meet Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. - noon. Students will explore new techniques, strengthen skills and get creativity flowing through on-location and studio work, demonstrations and constructive critiques. Born in Jamaica, Owen moved to New York City after college to pursue a career in the field of graphic arts. Now residing in Sebring, his works of watercolors, pastels and drawings can be found in collections in Jamaica, Canada, the U.S. and England. In his classes, all students work off the same model, but each create a unique product consistent with their own styles, perceptions and skill levels. Unlike paint-a-long, Owen lets you discover your inner artist and find your own rhythm with the color, water and brushstrokes. I like the beginners; they tend to be more open-minded to new ideas. Some of the advanced students are a bit more set in their ways. The beginners hunger to learn but their minds are fresh and more willing to listen to new ideas, says Owen.

In This Town Everyone Knows Her Name

heres a city in Polk County, where everybody knows your name. One of the best known women in this small city is Kay Hutzelman. Frostproof became her hometown in the year 2000 after retiring from being a school teacher and principal for many years. While she was visiting her sister at River Ranch Resort, she and her husband Paul began looking around the area for a Florida home. When they saw Frostproof, they knew it was the place where they would build a new life among the lakes, hills and citrus groves of southeast Polk County. Kay quickly became immersed in the community. She has been a key figure in almost all the civic clubs in Frostproof, as well as the Frostproof Art League, Frostproof Care Center, First Presbyterian Church, Chamber of Commerce and the Ramon Theater. In addition to all of that, she has been on the Frostproof City Council for nine years and Mayor for six years. Kay has a vision. She comes up with (what some people think are) impossible ideas and makes them happen. When she sets her mind to it its done. You can see her many days walking in downtown Frostproof, from business to business. She has said that many people want to hide when they see her coming, because she always wants money. But, its all for a good cause. The dearest thing to her heart has been the Ramon Theater. Since the restoration began in 2004, Kay has been a hands on supporter, helping to guide and direct the process from the beginning. She headed numerous fund-raising events, in the early years, to assure that the Ramon Theater would again become the cultural center of Frostproof. Under her leadership, the Ramon Theater now presents four to five Murder Mystery Dinners a year, an annual Music Series in January, February and March of each year, Festival of ChristmasTrees and the annual Ramon Theater Gala, which is the signature fund raising event for the Ramon. In addition to her duties as President of the Ramon Theater Board of Directors, Kay has also served as Director of Economic Development, Frostproof Chamber of Commerce; President, Frostproof Chamber of Commerce in 2005. Woman of the Year, two different times, Past President and current member of the Frostproof Art League & Gallery; member of Polk Arts Alliance and winner of their CARP award in 2011 and a representative on the Central Florida Development Council. She works in other areas of service that arent even listed here. Kay keeps saying shes going to slow down, step down and retire again, but all of Frostproof hopes it isnt so. Kay, we hope youll keep doing what youre doing, for many years to come. We cant imagine Frostproof without you.

Bartow Art Guild held Plein Air Bartow 2012, Thursday to Sunday, November 1-4. En plein air is a French expression meaning in the open air that is used to describe the act of painting outdoors. Fourteen artists participated in the event, including artists from Bartow, Lakeland, Plant City, St. Petersburg, Tampa and Venice, Florida and one artist from Cummings, Georgia. Thursday, the artists painted at the Circle B Bar Reserve, located off Winter Lake Road in Lakeland. The artists painted around downtown Bartow on Friday and Saturday. The 2012 awards reception was held at 3pm on November 4 at Carolyns Framing/{tay-cho} Art Gallery. Lyle Tibbs was awarded Best in Show ($750). Second Prize ($400) was awarded to Jane Bryant. Deborah Pellock received Third Prize ($200). Honorable Mentions (gift certificates) were awarded to Rosemary Carter and Princess Simpson Rashid. A Quick Draw, where the artists had two hours to paint a scene, took place Saturday afternoon at Nye Jordon Park in Bartow. First Prize ($150 gift certificate) was awarded to Lyle Tibbs. Second Prize ($100 gift certificate) was awarded to Carlos De Leon Campos. Third Prize ($100 gift certificate) was awarded to Reba Reece. Plein Art Bartow 2013 is already in planning for November 2013.

First Friday Art Walk is growing every month. If you havent come over to see what were doing, try to visit on January 4, February 1 and March 1 from 5pm until 7pm. All types of Artists; Oil, Acryic, textile, soap, etc are participating. The Artists demonstrate their craft on the street during the Art Walk and the walkers enjoy watching the art appear right in front of their eyes. The local newspapers are giving the Frostproof Art League excellent coverage, which is a great help in getting people out to the Art Walk. The Thursday afternoon Childrens Art Class is going strong. GOD ON STAGE
I still have the letters.

Around 1972, at what was then still Polk Junior College, I decided to direct a small cast musical called Godspell. Basically agnostic but fundamentally human, I had been moved to tears when I saw the production at a small college in Winter Park. In fact, I got the last two seats at the last performance. Almost divine intervention. So now, driven by twin passions of love of theatre and the story it told-albeit in quite an unconventional way-- Godspell came to our theatre. And so did the pickets. With a ton of letters from at least one church, this musical unleashed some pretty heavy indictments about this Jesus-in-a Supermanshirt-with -clown-make-up-on-his-face show. (One of the letters gave me and the cast a free pass to the hereafter, the warm one.) Nevertheless, it performed to enraptured crowds that week and created a new interest in local theatre. The show was then invited to some less vociferous churches. God was a hit again, despite his top hat and cane. Which, of course, could only lead to our performing Jesus Christ Superstar a decade later. No pickets this time. Just standing room only. So what is it about the story of Christ--when made into a rock musical --that stirs the body politic--both in favor and opposed? As one Catholic newspaper commented about Godspell: the music often sounds like howls from Hell! Seems hymns about Him require softer sounds. Blasphemy.
At least the Easter story, performed in churches, while still going full throttle as well, gets us to the expected ending. Which, of course, is really a new beginning. And what had the authors done to the characters of Jesus and Judas? Tim Rice, lyricist for JC Superstar was quoted as saying It happens that we dont see Christ as God but simply the right man at the right time at the right place. Whats more, at least in his version, Jesus was seen through Judas eyes, this time a mere human being. Read some of his lyrics: If you strip away the myth from the man You will see where we all soon will be Jesus! Youve started to believe the things they say of you You really do believe this talk of God is true And all the good youve done will soon get swept away Youve begun to matter more than the things you say Listen Jesus I dont like what I see. More blasphemy.
A RESuRRECTION OF FAITH.
So, what is there to be concerned about? Look, the Renaissance allowed sacred lyrics to marry contemporary melodies. Negro gospel appeared in the similar chapels centuries later when hand clapping and foot stomping were joined to biblical verse. Then the second half of the twentieth century gave us what we called Christian rock. Another wedding. It was just a small leap to stage musicals that allowed theatrical liberties and personal tolerance a final marriage, both in lyrics, melodies and characters. We may still dress Jesus in white, don Judas in a black leather motorcycle jacket, but we dont mess heroes and villains as a plot device. After all, Judas was still Krypton to Christ. You dont have theatre without conflict. Are we a-feared ofpeople losing faith? With less than a third of Americans going to religious services on a regular basis, when one out of five dont claim a specific religionandwe argue over taxing religion,faith is consistently tested. Lets allow the theatre its freedom to present the most told tale in Western history in styles, melodies or less-than-accepted orthodoxies that reflect who we are (or who we think we are). When the man and the myth intersect with the music of the day, were likely to get people--- particularly youngpeople--- back to their faith. Any faith. Coming soon! SONGS AND SIN

In both Godspell and Superstar the music mostly rocks and the lyrics sometimes mock. Stephen Schwartz, who wrote those lyrics to Godspell ---and went on to compose Pippin and Wicked---had his own cross to bear for some of those choices. His response: It may amuse you to know that when the film version of GODSPELL opened, I was roundly criticized for the lyrics for Save the People by Richard Schickel, the movie critic of Time Magazine, who quoted them disparagingly. The lyrics to almost all of the songs are from traditional Episcopal hymn settings, which explains their solid basis in Scripture. Apparently hes not Episcopalian. Lets face it: Jesus was not a song and dance man. He wasnt even an Episcopalian. He didnt wear makeup and he didnt dig soul, he saved them. And he certainly didnt wear Superman shirts. What he did was attempt to save the world by dying for its sins, had a kind of revival of his own (sure sounds like a super something to me). But put this Bible story to rock music, sung by rock singers clothed in Gothic, Gucci or tie-dyed shirts, place it in a schoolyard, a shopping mall, a prison--or even (Heaven help us!) a church? Whats worse--neither musical has the resurrection. Or at least a clear one. Blasphemy again.

Mandy won a 1995 Emmy Award for his critically acclaimed performance in the CBS series Chicago Hope, and recently starred in the CBS series Criminal Minds as FBI profiler Jason Gideon and in the Showtime Original Series Dead Like Me as the reaper Rube Sofer.
Paul Ford was the original pianist for the Broadway productions of Stephen Sondheims Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, Passion, Assassins, the revival of Pacific Overtures and the Tony awardwinning revival of Assassins. His other Broadway credits include the current revival of Pal Joey, Curtains, 110 in the Shade (revival), Tom Sawyer, High Society, The Rink, Rags, A Day in Hollywood / A Night in the Ukraine, The Secret Garden, and Falsettos. Clive Barnes of the New York Post called Mandy the greatest entertainer on Broadway today period. In 1989, Mandy began his concert career at Joseph Papps Public Theater. This coincided with the release of his first solo album entitled Mandy Patinkin. Since then he has toured extensively, appearing to sold-out audiences across the United States, Canada, London and Australia, performing songs from writers including Stephen Sondheim, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Irving Berlin, Randy Newman, Adam Guettel and Harry Chapin, among others.

ustang Sally & The Hamjos have performed concerts at Bok Tower, Ramon Theater, as pre-show band for the Symphonys annual Concert Under The Stars. The Hamjos have performed in the major folk festivals in Florida, concert halls, for private, community events and charity functions, as well as playing for contra dances. Folks enjoy their tempo, variety and enthusiasm. In June, 2012 Mustang Sally & The Hamjos performed one hour live on Tampa WMNF 88.5 Mr. Ethnics Old Time Music Show, sharing much enthusiasm for the new CD, Road Trip. With Mustang Sally on the hammered dulcimer and the five Hamjos performing on fiddle, guitars, clawhammer banjos, mandolin, old-fashioned rhythm spoons plus a wash-tub bass, this Old-Time String Band stirs back-porch energy with music reflecting the many influences of the past. Beautiful harmonies from the two vocalists complement the instrumentals which range from Appalachian fiddle tunes to Celtic reels, blues, rags and traditional waltzes. They are known for their old-time instruments, toe-tapping energy and old-time fun. Youll find their enthusiasm hard to resist in creating just a good, happy feeling with their eclectic performance versatility. Their first CD, self-titled Mustang Sally & The Hamjos has almost sold out. They have recently released their new CD, ROAD TRIP, with all new energetic old-time music and wonderful harmonies. In addition to Mustang Sally and the Hamjos, band leader, Sally Anderson, hosts the Lakeside Music Room House Concerts in Winter Haven. The concerts are open to the public, but reservations are required due to limited seating capacity. Sally invites you to share a night of acoustic music and explore new friendships with other folks who appreciate the intimate, quiet setting Lakeside provides, while hearing amazing and talented entertainers. Lakeside Music Room is a member of the Polk Arts Alliance. Doors open for the concerts at 6:45pm. Concerts begin at 7:30pm. Suggested donation for each concert is $12-15. Thursday, January 31, 7:30pm - Small Potatoes: Chicago-based folk duo, Jacquie Manning & Rich Prezio combine clever, witty and powerfully poignant songs, from Celtic to Cowboy, Blues, Country and Swing. Two great voices, fine guitar playing, and a touch of tin whistle, flute, mandolin and percussive instruments.
