The ability to represent yourself both in written and verbal form is crucial to your success. This class will help you prepare and practice skills necessary for making effective career choices. Interviewing You will practice your interviewing skills during the mod-1 component of Professional Development Resume You will need to complete a chronological resume that follows the guidelines discussed in class. Cover Letter You will need to write a cover letter in business format to a specific food service establishment. The guidelines will be reviewed and you will need to bring a copy to class SMART goals/ Internship Agreement- You will create a goals agreement for your internship site, using the SMART goal filter, and addressing the areas of professionalism, practical skill, and organizational skills that have been identified by self-reflection and instructor assessment. This document will represent the agreement with your internship site. This component will be introduced during this course and completed during mod-2 Professional Development Daily Professional Observation/Professional Evaluation Students will be observed and evaluated on their professional behavior each class.

IV. Course Standards PPCDCD Career Development

The value of industry experience in an internship setting approved by the New England Culinary Institute is immeasurable. The student completes an internship study following program guidelines. The standard is met when the student: 1. Researches job opportunities and select one that demonstrates that they understand their skill level. 2. Estimates and is realistic about their personal needs as budgetary and geographic restrictions when considering options 3. Evaluates and demonstrates that their choice of site is an opportunity to continue his educational development

CCTW Writing The student writes to demonstrate his/her understanding of the components of good writing in a variety of styles. Through the active process of writing and revising, the student establishes his/her point of view in a disciplined and sophisticated manner. The standard is met when the student: 1. Demonstrates an ability to draft, revise and finalize written work at a professional level by clearly articulating main ideas, providing appropriate supporting information, following an organized structure, using the appropriate tone and maintaining correct sentence-level grammar. 2. Produces critical and creative writing including persuasive essays, reflective writing and descriptive writing CCTP Presentation Through the preparation and delivery of professional presentations, the student gains knowledge of a specific topic while sharpening communication and oral communication skills. The standard is met when the student prepares and delivers professional presentations by: 2. Projecting a professional appearance and demeanor 7. Accepting and responding appropriately to questions, comments and criticisms BMIT Information Technology The student uses the computer to handle business presentations, reports and financial reports. The standard is met when the student: 1. Uses word processing skills to produce reports, letters, memos, menus and papers 5. Demonstrates familiarity with Internet functions and uses search engines, resources sites and basic terminology. PPCDPD Professional Demeanor The student is exposed to the many facets of professionalism in the foodservice industry to help inspire good behavior, sound communication skills and an enhanced work ethic. The standard is met when the student: 1. Uses positives critiques to revise work and to improve work until at standard 4. Meets established appearance and grooming for back and front of the house classes and projects a professional appearance and demeanor on campus and its different outlets 5. Uses appropriate language and decorum 6. Attends classes punctually and with dependability 7. Actively listens and participates in class 8. Prepares for class and station changes. V. Rituals and Routines

Attendance: You are expected to attend and be on time to all classes. If you are sick or unable to attend due to an emergency you must contact me prior to the start of the class by calling me at least 15 minutes prior to class at 802.225.3315. Failure to call the instructor will result in a no call no show absence for class. Any day missed will be rescheduled during completion week or an alternative requirement may be discussed at the discretion of the instructor. Any professionalism violation will result in a mandatory session during completion week.

Class work: You are expected to be fully-prepared for class and hand in all assignments when due.. Please submit your homework typed, it is expected that the spell check function will have been used, and that you have taken the time to review your work for grammatical errors. Keep a copy of all of your written work in case it gets lost. Be sure that you understand and follow the instructions and criteria set for each assignment. If an assignment is not properly completed or lacks content, I will return it to you and you will have to correct all errors before being complete in the class. All work must meet standard. If any part of assignment falls below standard, the student must revise work until it meets standard. If incomplete, an EP will be issued. Students are then responsible to bring this EP form along with the completed work to the instructor for evaluation.
