Beaches in accord with the plans of CTF 48, and will thereafter ....
continue to su)port the further operations of the Landing Force
as required.. Y
4. Bombardment Principles
{a) IDnphasis should oe given to all bombardment principles and
doctrine contained in references.
(b) Bombardment problems can be expected to be an intensifica-
'
tion of those experienced in recent operations. Gun _positions,
pillbpxes and emplacements wil1 be dug in, and, in most cases,
provided with overhead cover. All will be difficult to locate
and will require painstaking .. work by air spotters. Carefully
aimed, precise fire, using one or tvro guns will be required to
secure the necessary destruction. Large calibers.. and bombing
must be employed to strip camouflage, followed in quick success-
ion by close spott".ng and fire for destruction.
(C) The nuinerous possible landing beaches make it difficult
for the enemy. to concentrate defenses at all beaches. A more
probable defense tactic will be the establishment of relatively
light delayins forces in fixed defensive positions near all
'
beaches, plus mobile reserves .stationed for qui-ck deployment. e.
Bombardn:ents prior to XRAY Day should therefore avoid indica-
ting our beach selections any more than is necessary in accom-
plishing the necessary degree of preparation. Bo.11bardment plans
should emphasize the interdiction of the measer road and rail-
road net to prevent the movement of reserves,

(o) Destroying enemy guns, torpedo tubes, rocket projectors,
and motor 'torpedo and suicide boats is a most important duty
for all fire support ships. Experience in recent operations
indicates tho probability of encountering large numbers of
11
suicidell boats and midget submarines. These craft are gen- .
erally_well hidden in camouflaged caves at the foot of cliffs
and .in riVer c.nd canal banks, In many instances, such boats
and craft have been kept in villages and other locations at
c risiderable stance. from water - from which they are carried
by uck the laucnhing site. Careful, continuous observa-
tion, v1sual photographic, must be maintained of all likely
sites as these craft must be destroyed before being given a
chance to dll1llago our ships.
(p) Certain ships must always be availnble in each fire support
group for instant counter--battery duty against shore batteries
which fire at OUr ships or landing craft. Such counter-battery
ships should not be assigned distant missions which, may inter-
fere. with their counter-battery functions. This particularly
applies during the support of landings, as this time is usually
fayorable for cnauy guns to open fire. iihen the exact location-
ol an .active enemy gun cannot be determined, tho general vicin-
ity shou;ta imtJ1odiatoly be covered by urea firo. This type of
fire should be by definite pkns in

Air Spot will be available, both .from vo-vos float planes from
battleships and cruisers, and from VOF planes based on spotting CVEs.
When air spot is used. to supplement the observation of a shore fire
control party, communication will be via HF spotting frequencies as
per paragraph 2 above. In .. all . such cases, the Bl!lail amount of fre-
quency separation in the .overall frequency plan makes it necessary .
that the plane, firirtg ahips and shore fire control party use every
possible means to set transmitters exactly on the assigned spotting
frequency. As the firing ship has the .best facilities to acccmplish
this, it Lllist coach the shorefhc control party accordingly. flhen
establishing contact with planes, ships will tune their receivers
only as necessary to bring in the plane's transmitter, If the plane
is only Slighly off frequency, communications may be maintained and
coordinated by the plane tuning its receiver to receive. the ship and
SFCP and the ship maintaining a split phone watch to rccei ve both SFCP
and plane, If the planets transmitter is more than 2 .kcs off fre.
it Shall not be used for spotting, but will be directed by the
ship to report to the appropriate control officer on the VHF control
net. If thG plane cannot correct its, frequency while :j..n :fl.ig,b.t, it
will then either be assigned ar1,0ther mission, using .. )its secondary HF
frequency, or directed to return to base, ./
