For luxury homeowners — and the architects, designers and custom builders—Loewen is

the brand that delivers an unrivaled combination of artisanship, experience and environmental
sensibility in an extensive line of Douglas Fir, FSC Douglas Fir and Mahogany windows and
doors.
The Loewen brand practices environmental stewardship in not just the manufacturing
processes but in the product offering as well. Nearly 100% of the wood fiber used in the
production of Loewen products is derived from forestlands certified by the Canadian Standards
Association (CSA), Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
Environmental stewardship is closely aligned with many of the core values that are
present in Loewen. We understand their customers' commitment to environmental sensibility
and the Loewen brand reflects their commitment to alleviating our environmental footprint.
In 2006, Loewen became the first major North American window and door manufacturer
to receive FSC chain of custody certification (SW-COC-1739). By offering optional FSC chain
of custody certified Douglas Fir wood windows and doors, Loewen is proudly demonstrating its
stance on reducing the impact they make on the environment while providing a peace of mind for
environmentally conscious customers. FSC is the only certified wood recognized in the LEED®
program. Loewen offers excellent attributes for those designing structures under LEED®,
particularly in the areas of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Materials.
By only manufacturing wood windows and doors, Loewen is using a renewable resource
and an efficient natural insulator that will consume less energy than alternative materials in a
home. And, because wood is the foundation of Loewen’s business–everything that we do relies
in this resource–we recognize that they must also replace this natural resource with new trees. In
2001, Loewen was the recipient of the Tree Canada Foundation Eterne Award, honoring us for
"environmental leadership and commitment to taking action on global climate change through
the planting of trees." Internally, the Loewen Environmental Council (LEC) audits company
activities ensuring that the highest possible standards of environmental stewardship are
represented in company policies and actions.
Loewen recycles virtually all of the wood waste created in the manufacturing. We also
recycle glass, aluminum, vinyl weatherstrip, solvents, motor oil and paper. And, during frigid
Canadian winters, we heat the production plant with sawdust and sell the remainder to local
farmers for animal bedding. While Loewen actively seeks to reduce-reuse-recycle, we
understand the real world dynamics of downcycling and so Loewen aggressively design systems
that are optimally efficient in consumption and strive to produce windows of the highest quality
so as to assure long product life. To this end, the Loewen products are made to be repaired and
can be removed and re-installed. Once again, product quality is at the crossroads of efficiency
and responsible design. Loewen is a socially responsible corporation, buying ethically
manufactured products and recognized for our leadership in energy conservation and
environmental protection. The success of the Loewen brand through their environmental
commitment and they demonstrate outstanding capabilities for customization.
In 2006, MRA (Market Resource Associates) of Minneapolis, MN, conducted a survey of
distributors, remodeling contractors, home builders and retail dealers.
The Survey:
Over one thousand industry professionals ranked the performance of 21 wood or clad
wood window manufacturer brands in categories ranging from consistent product quality to good
customer value.
The Results:
Loewen was ranked highest in the following performance attributes:
• Providing consistent product quality from unit to unit
• Ensuring units are consistently square
• Quality features for customers
• Effective literature that sells the product
• Providing good customer value
• Overall product quality
• Overall manufacturer service performance and relationship
The Award:
As a result of this achievement, Loewen has been recognized with the Best Luxury Brand
Award for its first overall ranking in over half of the survey categories. This award confirms
Loewen as the industry leader when it comes to offering a higher level of product and service
performance for its customers. Unlike other window makers, Loewen uses Douglas Fir as the
base species of frames and sashes (Mahogany is available as an option). This tightly grained
wood does more than just give Loewen windows and doors a rich, warm texture — it’s also
naturally tough and resilient, yet remarkably workable, meaning it is ideal for precision milling
and capable of holding the smallest, most intricate detailing. To enhance the wood’s high
natural resistance to moisture absorption, decay and insect infestation, every Loewen wood
component is treated with a water repellent/wood preservative sealant before assembly.
• Douglas Fir is North America’s most plentiful softwood species, accounting for one-fifth of the
continent’s total softwood reserves.
• Nearly all of the Douglas Fir purchased by Loewen comes from forestland that is Sustainable
Forestry Initiative (SFI) certified. In addition to SFI certification, many of our Douglas Fir
suppliers in Canada are ISO 14001 and/or CSA certified.
• Douglas Fir and Mahogany — Different. Durable. The ideal species for fenestration and a
hallmark of the Loewen brand.

Loewen’s Douglas Fir FSC Certified Products

Loewen is proud to be the first major window and door manufacturer to offer an entire
line of optional Douglas Fir FSC certified products. Individuals pursuing LEED® certification
can earn points through the use of FSC certified products. Consumers receive energy efficient
buildings and the peace of mind that they are ensuring the safeguarding of forests for future
generations.
There are a number of common attributes in every Loewen product that set them apart
from their competitors. By using Douglas Fir as the core species, Loewen ensures that durability
is built into every Loewen window and door. Loewen makes sure that visible wood surfaces are
finished with clear wood. Their mortise and tenon sash jointing significantly improves strength
and structural integrity. This superior corner construction keeps the window square and true.
Another built-in quality feature is the laminated sash. While maintaining a clear visible wood
finish, Loewen permanently combines separate wood components into a single unit. This
engineered construction dramatically increases strength and stability while simultaneously
reducing the amount of wood consumed. Loewen offers extruded aluminum cladding to protect
window and door exteriors. This rugged outer shell retains its shape, resists denting, and lasts
longer than roll formed aluminum. Loewen window cladding is set away from the underlying
wood, creating an air space that improves thermal performance. Finally, the thicker glass is
highly resistant to the stresses caused by fluctuations in temperature. Beneath the sealed glass
unit of every Loewen window is a hidden venting channel that protects both the sealed glass unit
and the wood sash from moisture accumulation. By allowing air to circulate, condensation that
may have formed below the seal can escape—a small detail that adds years to the life of Loewen
windows and doors.
Loewen engineering results in uncommon strength and durability, enabling dramatic
design, innovation and inspiration.
1. Coastal Douglas Fir for strength and rigidity (optional Coastal FSC Douglas Fir and
Mahogany available).
2. Laminated sash for enhanced structural stability and a tight weather seal.
3. Dual seal on glass units for long hermetic seal life.
4. Natural clear wood interior ideal for staining or painting.
5. Profiled sash edge for a finished look and integration with Simulated Divided Lite (SDL)
bars.
6. Optional extruded aluminum cladding for low maintenance, available in a wide range of
colors.
7. Minimal use of exposed exterior caulking on glass surfaces.
8. No metal-to-glass contact for improved energy efficiency.
9. Triple seal glazing system on metal clad units to effectively block moisture infiltration.
10. Hidden venting channel to allow built-up condensation to escape, increasing seal and sash
life.
11. Authentic stile and rail construction. No miters.
12. Mortise and tenon sash corner joints for structural stability.
13. Taller bottom rail to create a custom architectural look reminiscent of traditional joinery and
to enhance structural stability and strength.
14. Airspace between wood and window cladding for air circulation and added insulative value.
15. Secondary weatherstrip to deflect wind-driven rain from primary seal.

of durable paint finishes is available in a total of 36 carefully selected colors.
The broad variation in Loewen sizes, shapes and designs and the demanding
environmental conditions that our product encounters require an alloy that has the ability to:
• Withstand serious impact without sustaining damage.
• Allow intricate extrusion detailing.
• Provide the malleability necessary to clad the many sizes and shapes Loewen offers.
• Deliver the unequaled environmental durability for which aluminum is known.
• Provide a substrate that enhances colorfast paint performance.
