VINELAND
Coach: Will Breese (1st season) Conference: Cape-Atlantic League American Conference Group: IV South Last season: 6-18 Returning starters: 1 Key players: Tanasia Russell (Jr. 5-8, G), Iesha Watson (Sr., 5-5, G). Key newcomers: Kaylynn James (Sr., 5-5, G/F), Aaliyah Harrold (So., 5-6, G), Naomi Rivera (Jr., 5-10, F/C), Shamika Bonner (Sr., 5-9, F); Cassandra Pagan (Jr., 5-7, F). Season outlook: The Fighting Clan achieved the highest peak and the lowest valley over the course of back-to-back years. Now its time for the program to build itself back up again. Vineland wont challenge for a CAL title like the one it won two years ago, but its ready to construct the foundation that could form a championship team in the future. The team would also like to make last years tumultuous season, which included two coaching changes and 19 fewer victories, a distant memory. Breese, who went 3-6 as an interim coach to close out last season, appears to be the perfect choice to oversee the building process one that was made a little more difficult with the transfer of Ariana Stokes. Vineland will benefit from the return of Russell, who spent a semester at Sacred Heart before recently returning to VHS. The all-around talent will provide a huge boost in any role she is called upon to perform. The rest of the Fighting Clan are short on experience with Watson logging the most varsity action with six games. If Vineland shows nice development over the season, it will be considered a successful year. Prediction: With Russell back in the fold, look for the Fighting Clan to hover around the six-win mark again and build for the future.

improved Brown, who handled the point as a freshman last season, along with DiBiase, who is a defensive specialist. A player to watch is Seyler, a transfer from Holy Spirit who adds a spark to what has become a solid and somewhat deep bench. Prediction: The Chiefs could be ready to challenge for a CAL playoff spot and make some major noise in Group II South. If those two goals are accomplished, a 20-win season is well within reach.

OLMA

Key newcomers: Abby Zee (Sr., 5-8, G), Nina Cirucci (Jr., 5-6, G), Katie Kavanagh (Fr., 5-8, G) Season outlook: If theres a sleeper pick to win a CAL National title this season, its the Villagers. The team was ravaged by injuries last year and it resulted in a sub-.500 record. OLMA is awaiting the much-anticipated debut of Vetra, a transfer from Latvia. The all-around talent never got a chance to play last year after she tore up her knee in a scrimmage. Shes back and ready to make up for lost time. The biggest question is where Vetra, who can play any of the five positions on floor, is slotted. Ruban, who transferred from the Ukraine last year, is also coming off ACL surgery. The tallest player in the area was impressive in limited action before her season was cut short because of a knee injury suffered in the seventh game of the season. Add Brewer to that duo and OLMAs frontcourt can be intimidating. Brewer has progressed each year and gives the Villagers another solid contributor in the paint. The Villagers also boast a strong backcourt with Dandrea and Covella, but the duo has had injury problems of their own. OLMA wont get any sympathy from its opponents. The Villagers have a tough schedule, which includes a trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., where they will play the No. 10 team in the nation, Dreher (S.C.). Prediction: If OLMA can stay healthy and get some decent production from the newcomers, this could be a special year for the Villagers. A 20-win season and some type of championship is definitely within reach.

With all five starters returning and a deep bench that boasts plenty of experience, Bridgeton appears to be on track to keep the ball rolling right into this winter. The team possesses a little bit of everything, including one of the areas top playmakers in Childers and a promising frontcourt tandem of Smith and Thompson. Keep an eye on Hawse and Mosley, two players who have shown significant progress since last season. Carter has this group going in the right direction and itll be another fun team to watch. Prediction: If Bridgeton stays healthy, dont be surprised if this squad pulls off some upset wins this season and settles nicely into the 13- to 15-win range.

MILLVILLE
Coach: Jason Kessler (5th season, 22-69) Conference: CAL American Group: IV South Last season: 9-16 Returning starters: 3 Key players: Ashli Weems (Sr., 5-11, PF/C), Krysten Woods (Sr., 6-3, C), Amanda Smith (So., 5-4, G), Katrina Gaskins (Jr., 5-7, G/F), Devona Bates (Sr., 5-8, PF/C). Key newcomers: Lexi Bruno (Jr., 5-5, G), Nicki Read (Jr., 5-4, F), Jordan Caez (So., 5-6, G), McKenzie Taylor (Jr., 5-9, F/C). Season outlook: There is a buzz coming out of the Millville camp and rightfully so. Theres plenty to talk about, starting with one of the premier post players in the CapeAtlantic League in Weems, who averaged a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds last season. Mix in a vastly improved frontcourt line with Woods, Gaskins and Bates and add a strong backcourt player in Smith, who shined with a great basketball IQ and jump shot as a freshman, and the conversation really starts to heat up. But the last ingredient might be the best Bruno, a transfer from Sacred Heart. The junior is as electrifying and talented as any player in all of South Jersey. She posted averages of 10.8 points, 6.1 assists and 2.7 rebounds per game last season. She has the ability to take a game over by herself, but she also has the knack of making everyone around her better . Shell have to sit out the first 30 days per NJSIAA transfer rules. Prediction: If the Bolts can stay afloat until Bruno becomes eligible, it might be a special season for Millville. This will be a fun team to watch with the 15-18 win mark a definite possibility.

CUMBERLAND

Key players: Felicite Diorio (Sr., 5-10, F), Asia Hester (Sr., 5-9, G/F), Katie McCormick (Sr., 5-5, G), Jodi Cook (So., 5-7, G/F). Key newcomers: Raykena Brown (Jr., 5-5, G), Carly Jorgenson (So., 5-6, G), SyDonnie Dawkins (Fr., 5-8, G/F), Tykiria Ellis (So., 5-8, F), Kate Elwell (Sr., 5-10, F). Season outlook: The Colts will look to their defense to carry the team this winter. The team lost its top two scorers to graduation, including the programs fourth all-time leading scorer in Lauren Whelan. Diorio is the only player back that scored double-figures last season and she only achieved the feat once. Cook, a promising guard/forward, will be looked upon to pick up some of the scoring. While Cumberland may struggle to put huge numbers on the scoreboard, the Colts dont plan on giving up many either. McCormick, a speedy guard, will lead a tenacious group of defenders that includes newcomers Brown and Jorgenson. Cumberland will also look to win the battle on the boards with Diorio along with Dawkins and Elwell. Prediction: If the Colts can generate some decent offense, they could be a spoiler in their new division. Eight to 10 wins would be a solid accomplishment for this group.

SCHALICK
Coach: Les Berry (1st season) Conference: Tri-County Diamond Group: I South Last season: 6-19 Returning starters: 1. Key players: Nikki Adams (Sr., 5-9, G), Ramsey Reed (Sr., 5-10, F), Allissa Long (Sr., 5-9, G), Cassidy Long (So., 5-6, G). Key newcomers: Kim Holmes (Sr., 5-10, G), Superia Ryan (Fr., 5-11, F), Taylor Ismail (Fr., 5-9, G), Emily Mattson (Jr., 5-11, F). Season outlook: Berry, who coached the Cougar boys to an eight-win season in 2007-08, takes over the girls program after longtime coach Mary Brown retired last winter. Berry wants to establish a different attitude amongst his players, urging them to develop a hard-hat mentality a relentless work ethic that is reflected in their practice habits as well as game action. Schalick doesnt boast a ton of experience as Adams is the lone starter returning from last years club. The senior, who returned to the hardcourt after taking a year off, reestablished her basketball skills and became a consistent scorer and a solid leader for the Cougars. The team will need her to develop that scoring touch even more this winter. Reed saw limited minutes on varsity last season and shell be joined by three first-year players in Holmes, Ryan and Mattson. Predicition: If the younger players develop quickly, the Cougars could be a spoiler in the Diamond. Look for Schalick to continue to improve as the season goes along.

Millville at Vineland, Friday, 4 p.m. The two rivals split the season series last year with the Thunderbolts collecting their first win over the Fighting Clan since 2006. Tip off the season with a girl-boy doubleheader on Irv Gosman Court. The rematch is Jan. 22 at Millville. Buena at St. Joseph, Tuesday, 7 p.m. The Chiefs made a 16-point improvement last season between the two games with the Wildcats, including a 39-35 loss on their trip to Hammonton. If Buena wants to become a serious threat in the CAL National race, a win here is important. Logan College Academy (Australia) at Our Lady of Mercy, Dec. 29, 3;30 p.m. Out-of-conference opponent? How bout out-of-country? The Villagers went halfway around the world to find this opponent as they welcome a team from Austrailia to Newfield. Vineland at Sacred Heart, Jan. 5, 5:30 p.m. The City Series continues as the girl-boy doubleheader will turn up the heat inside Jim Mogan Auditorium. Cedar Creek at Sacred Heart, Jan. 14, 7 p.m. The two teams played a pair of classics last winter, including a thrilling 44-40 victory by the Lions in the Pirates gym, which locked up the United Conference title. Bridgeton at Cumberland, Jan. 14, 4 p.m. An old rivalry is renewed when these two teams meet. Williamstown at Delsea, Jan. 29, 7 p.m. Two titans in the Tri-County Conference Royal Division will clash with the title most likely to be on the line. The first meeting with be on Jan. 20 at Williamstown.
Coach: Steve DiPatri (16th season, 331-82) Conference: CAL United Group: Non-Public B Last season: 25-2 Returning starters: 2 Key players: Mandy Buirch (Sr., 5-9, G), Kennedy Johnson (Jr., 6-2, C), Alyssa Ferrucci (Sr., 5-4, G). Key newcomers: Brooke Farside (Sr., 5-4, F), Gabby Sorantino (Sr., 6-1, F), Amanda Goff (Jr., 5-7, F), Colbi Morgan (Jr., 5-6, F), Ciani Carter (So., 5-5, G), Alyssa Fabrizio (So, 5-4, G), Dayne Aulffo (Fr., 5-2, G), Kaila Smith (Fr., 6-1, F/C). Season outlook: In a year that some considered would lead Sacred Heart to be one of the top teams in the state and the best in program history, the Lions instead find themselves in a season of transition. Sacred Heart is hurting with numbers as only 11 players will fill out two teams. But if the past is any indication, the Lions will get going when the going gets tough. The team still possesses a strong inside-outside punch with Johnson and Buirch. Johnsons game continues to grow as she looks to become one of the top frontcourt players in the Cape-Atlantic League while Buirch is a steady, solid outside shooter. The Lions will rely heavily on a group of newcomers, including Carter and Smith, two young players who could see major playing time. Sacred Heart has averaged 23.6 wins over the last five seasons. Prediction: While another 20-win season appears to be a long shot, one can never count the Lions out. Look for the team to get better as the season progresses and a 16-18 win season isnt out of the question.

DELSEA

Season outlook: The Crusaders lost three key players to graduation, including Daily Journal Player of the Year Dominique Meeko Hassinger, but dont count on this squad experiencing any type of a dropoff. Delsea has a very solid nucleus coming back, including a strong frontcourt with Kirby, Schaffer and Stuart. Christina, a wing forward, and Carney will be expected to provide a bulk of the offense. The duo showed very capable of handling the chores last season when each made clutch shots for the Crusaders. Schmidt, who returns to the team after taking a year off, will add depth to a talented backcourt. Delseas coaching staff always seems to have the knack of getting the best out of its players and getting them prepared for the big games at the end of the season. Prediction: For any opposing teams that overlook Delsea this winter, they will be in for a rude awakening. Look for Delsea to challenge Williamstown and Clearview for the Royal Division crown as well as making a strong statement in Group III South.

C. CHRISTIAN
Coach: Dave Hobbs (4th season, 20-45) Conference: Tri-State Christian Last season: 6-15 Returning starters: 4 Key players: Precious Bryant (Sr., 5-7, G/F), Kelsey Hoffman (So., 5-10, F), Kelli McKeown (So., 5-8, G/F), Kate Riggins (So., 5-4, PG), Kristen Mills (So., 5-9, F), Meredith Jones (Sr., 5-5, G). Key newcomers: Maeghan Parmer (So., 5-5, G), Courtney Hoffman (Sr., 5-6, G/F), Chyanne Smith (Fr., 5-7, F), Tori Djakow (Fr., 5-3, G). Season outlook: The Crusaders rattled off an unbeaten season en route to the TriState Christian crown in girls soccer. What does that have to do with the schools hoop group? Plenty. In a small school like Cumberland Christian, athletic teams depend on multi-sport athletes and the more than half of the Crusaders basketball roster consists of soccer players. The Crusaders hope the success translates to the hard court too. Bryant is the teams go-to scoring option after leading the team with a 10.9 average last season and she looks to become more of a threat by moving to the perimeter. The Crusaders are expecting big production from its Fab Five group of sophomores. Kelsey Hoffman provides a lot of athleticism in the paint while McKeown has developed into a solid swing player. Playing soccer has set some of the players back like Jones, the teams defensive specialist, who is recovering from an ankle injury, and Parmer, who missed most of the preseason recovering from a broken ankle. Prediction: Look for Cumberland Christian to top double-digits in wins and make some serious noise in the postseason.

BUENA
Coach: Misty Russo (3rd season, 23-32) Conference: CAL United Group: II South Last season: 17-11 Returning starters: 5 Key players: Jasmine Miro (Sr.,5-3,G),Caroline Santiago (Sr., 5-9, F), Janay Smith (Sr. 6-0, C), Julia DiBiase (Jr., 5-6, F), Lynn Brown (So., 5-5, G), Jenn Cimino (Jr., 5-6, G/F), Patrice Green (Sr., 5-6, G/F), Victoria Battelini (Jr.,, 5-7, G/F). Key newcomers: Elena Sneathen (Jr., 5-9, F), Danielle DeFeo (So., F), Alaina Seyler (Jr., 5-3, G). Season outlook: The time is now for the Chiefs. Led by the senior trio of Miro, Santiago and Smith, Buena looks primed for a huge season. At 6-foot, Smith gives the Chiefs a steady force in the middle whenever they take the floor. Smith, a former swimmer, appears to have gotten her sea legs on the court and is armed with a new hook shot. Santiago showed steady improvement last season after she recovered from a serious knee injury and looks to take the next step while Miro possesses a clutch outside shot. Buena will also benefit from an

PLAYOFF INFORMATION
The cutoff date for the state tournament is Feb. 2. Teams must have a .500 record through their first 16 games or by the date for postseason entry. Sub-.500 teams may be invited to fill our sectional brackets. Each team will be seeded by its power point ranking, which includes quality points, group points and residual points, for its first 16 games. First round action will begin on Feb. 25. Sectional Finals will be March 4-7 and state finals will be March 7 and 9.
