Chapter 25 Related Inner/Outer Circles Preparation for and participation in an Inner/Outer Circle activity will be the first mini-project for the second quarter. Your preparatory work and participation as a member of an Inner and Outer Circle is part of the grade for this mini project. This Inner/Outer Circle is scheduled for Tuesday, December 4th. If you are absent excused the day of this Inner/Outer Circle, the Circle make up will be Thursday, Dec. 6th during tutorial. Per the course syllabus, if you are absent excused the day of the Inner/Outer Circle, you are still responsible for getting your preparatory work to your teacher by the start of class or points will be deducted. Preparatory Work Before the Circle: 1. You will be assigned to participate to one of the two Inner Circles and then one of the positions within the Inner Circle. Place a check in the spaces provided below to indicate your Inner Circle and position assignment. _____Inner Circle #1 Prompt: Who profited to a greater degree from the African slave trade, _____ the Europeans (Group A) or _____the Africans (Group B)? _____Inner Circle #2 Prompt: Who paid the higher cost for the African slave trade, _____ the Europeans (Group C) or _____the Africans (Group D)? 2. Read and selectively highlight the Inner/Outer Circle document packets (documents 1-8). This is important as you will need to be able to quickly find the lines and key points you are presenting or other members are discussing within your circle. Look for specific line numbers that are evidence to support your specific position within your assigned circle. 3. Download and save to a flash drive the template contained below titled Preparation Notes for Chap 16 and 24 Inner/Outer Circles. Complete each column of the handout by typing in the information requested. Remember information in your preparation notes needs to reflect your assigned position. These preparatory notes will be part of your mini-project grade. 4. After reading and selectively highlighting your primary document packet, select two or more documents which support your assigned circle position. Some documents may contain more than one set of line numbers to support your position so you may use a document more than once. Some documents may not be useful to all circles. You should aim at being thoroughly prepared to participate in your circle.

5. Using the separate handout Higher Level Questions, prepare four questions that relate to your assigned circle; one should be a level one question, one should be a level two question, one should be a level three question, and the fourth question should be a level four question. Your goal in writing these questions is to draw out evidence from the documents and discussion that support your position within the circle. 6. Answer each of your four questions by including evidence from specific documents. Each question/answer pair should have evidence drawn from at least one document. Clearly cite the use of each document and line numbers in your answer. For example you may wish to start a sentence in the following way: Document ______, line #_____ to _____.... 7. Your Preparation Notes and Higher Level Questions MUST be typed. You will need your primary document packet, typed preparation notes and types questions and answers when you participate in your assigned Inner Circle. Submit these documents along with your hand-written notes from the Outer Circle at the end of class on November 13th, 2012. During the Inner/Outer Circles: Outside Circle: You will be acting as a Recorder taking notes on the inner circle using a note-taking guide. Turn-in these notes, and your typed questions and answers and preparation notes handout at the end of class the day of the circle. Inside Circle: 1. Make AT LEAST 2 contributions and only one question may count as a contribution. Be sure to allow all members of your circle to fully participate. 2. You should have your primary document packet, your typed preparation notes, and your typed questions and answers to participate in your circle. 3. Your oral participation grade will reflect your knowledge of the documents, your contributions supporting your assigned position within the circle, and your overall critical thinking during your participation in the circle.

they grab them and get them sold; and so great, Sir, is the corruption and licentiousness that our country is being completely depopulated. I saw him while he thus tortured to death. The shocking scene is to this day fresh in my mind and I have often overcome while thinking about it Accordingly, we dare not trust them, we receive them on board, from the first as enemies; and before their number exceeds perhaps, ten or fifteen, they are all put in irons; in most ships, two and two together.
