Formal Proposal

Magazine Title I have chosen to name my magazine Clique. This is because it is short and snappy, and also because the word clique is an urban word which defines a group of people who hang around each other because they belong to the same stereotypical group. This term will be very familiar with my target audience s it is a suitable name. Choice of Genre I have chosen to base my magazine around the hip-hop genre. This is because I already have background knowledge within the genre as I regularly download hiphop music. Hip-hop is also my favourite genre of music so I can relate to the content of the magazine more which will lead to better finished product. My Target Audience My magazine is to be aimed at males, aged 16-20, of all ethnicities. I have chosen this target audience because hip-hop is stereotypically thought to be listened to by Afro-Caribbean males so I am aiming to challenge the ethnicity stereotype but keep the magazine aimed at males as it would secure a strong number of readers. I have chosen the age range of 16-20 because hip-hop music can be quite explicit so it may portray a negative example to a younger audience. On the other hand, hip-hop is quite an informal genre of music so a target audience of over 20 years old may not appreciate the music in its own identity as they would be expecting something a bit more formal. Initial ideas for Front Cover For my front cover, I am planning to use a medium close up of male who is dressed in simple clothing but has either sunglasses or jewellery on to reflect his cool attitude. I am still to decide on the ethnicity on the male but I would like my model to be around 18 years old so that the front cover does not look too child-like which means that readers will immediately be able to see the target audience of the magazine. I would like the sell lines to be related to the artist on the front cover with an anchor which shows who the image is of and also it gives the reader an idea of who will feature in the main double page spread in the magazine. I would also like to advertise a competition on my front cover as it provides a further incentive for people to buy the magazine. Initial ideas of Contents Page The masthead on the contents page will be big and bold and in a similar font to the front cover masthead. My contents page will have a clean, simple layout so that the text on the page can be easily located and read. There will also be an editors note somewhere on the page. I would like to place a dominant image of the cover artist in the middle of the page and categorised features on the right hand side of the page. The left hand side of the page will consist of two images and information on other features in the magazine.

Initial ideas of Double Page Spread My double page spread will have an article of the artists who was on the front cover. The article will be about how that artist was once poor and involved with drugs and negative aspects but now is successful in the music industry. One side of the page will be dominated with an image of the artist but the image will be different to the one on the front cover. I will have to consider what background, props and camera angles to use to make the picture interesting. Initial ideas for Photographs For the front cover, I need to take one dominant medium close up photograph. For the contents page I need to take three photographs which will be a mixture of medium close ups and medium shots. The double page spread will need to consist of one dominant photograph on the artist who is on the front cover. My initial thoughts are that the photo on the double page spread could be taken with a canted angle, but this could change. Furthermore, I will have to consider what props and backgrounds to use for these photographs. I will most likely use props to do with hip-hop such as microphones and jewellery and the backgrounds will be simple but effective.
